”You’re... from the Industry and Commerce Bureau? Don’t tell me you’re Huang Kai?” Seeing the man’s panicked expression and, more importantly, the bureau uniform he was wearing, Captain Gu instantly put two and two together. His gaze suddenly sharpened.

It couldn’t be helped. With his status, he normally wouldn’t handle such a case personally. But now... who would have thought this matter would have alarmed the municipal party committee’s top leader, Secretary Dong Wencheng himself?! The Secretary had even paid a personal visit to the Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Under these circumstances, even a high-ranking commander at the deputy-department level like Captain Gu could not afford the slightest negligence. As he rushed to the address Secretary Dong had provided, he had used the car ride to review all the information sent to them, so he naturally had a full grasp of the situation.

And since Captain Gu could call out Huang Kai’s name, it was obvious he was here for a specific reason. An old fox like Huang Kai understood this in an instant.

”No, Captain Gu, I, I...” The portly Huang Kai grew even paler, sweat beading on his forehead. The color was rapidly draining from his face.

It was only natural. If this had been any other time, having a commander of Captain Gu’s stature recognize him and call him by name would have thrilled Huang Kai. But now, even an idiot could tell this was a terrible omen.

”What’s with all the stammering? You just need to answer yes or no. Are you, or are you not, Comrade Huang Kai from the Municipal Industry and Commerce Bureau?” Seeing the portly Huang Kai’s guilty and frantic expression only confirmed Captain Gu’s suspicions. His voice grew colder, his tone more piercing. At his words, Huang Kai trembled from head to toe, clearly terrified.

”I... I am Huang Kai. I am Huang Kai from the Municipal Industry and Commerce Bureau,” the portly man finally admitted, his head hung low and his voice trembling.

”So it really is you.”

After Huang Kai confirmed his identity, Captain Gu’s piercing gaze swept over Hua Ming, Zheng Zhengbin, and Zhou Zhengxu. ”Then among you three, who is Mr. Hua Ming, and who are Zheng Zhengbin and Zhou Zhengxu?”

Hearing this, no matter how foolish Young Master Zheng and Zhou Zhengxu were, they understood that something was seriously wrong. Otherwise, why would the police officer address Hua Ming as ”Mister” but call them by their full names?

Zheng Zhengbin’s face turned ugly, as if he had been gravely insulted. ”I’m Zheng Zhengbin,” he said coldly. ”My father is Zheng Changhong. May I ask what you want with me, officer?”

This Young Master Zheng wasn’t a complete fool; he once again played the card he always relied on, hoping his father’s name would make the officer recognize his standing.

”Then you must be Mr. Hua Ming,” Captain Gu said, turning to him. ”I’m sorry you’ve encountered this trouble; it is a failure on the part of our Public Security Bureau. However, the city is taking this matter very seriously now. Even Secretary Dong Wencheng has personally intervened. So, Mr. Hua, please rest assured. We will certainly give you and Jinnan Jewelry a satisfactory explanation.”

At these words, Hua Ming was completely stupefied. Secretary Dong Wencheng... isn’t that... Could it be... could it be that the connection his son’s friend found wasn’t Deputy Mayor Jin Zhenglin, but the top leader of their provincial capital, Tongzhou, the provincial committee heavyweight, Secretary Dong Wencheng?!

Of course, he wasn’t the only one stunned. Huang Kai, Zheng Zhengbin, and the others were scared witless. Although they had faintly guessed that Captain Gu’s sudden appearance was related to their case, hearing him confirm it was one thing. But to hear that it had alarmed the top leader of the municipal committee, Secretary Dong... they were instantly dumbfounded.

Secretary... Secretary... Secretary Dong Wencheng?! Wasn’t it supposed to be Deputy Mayor Jin Zhenglin? Why would a trivial matter like this alarm Secretary Dong?!

The portly Huang Kai was completely floored. His face changed dramatically and his limbs went cold. He almost collapsed right there on the ground.

As for Young Master Zheng and his Dog Head Military Advisor, Zhou Zhengxu, they were in the same state. Their eyes were wide with terror. They never would have dreamed that such a minor case could alarm a monumental figure like Secretary Dong Wencheng. They were told it was Deputy Mayor Jin Zhenglin!

What on earth is that bumpkin’s background and identity?! How... how is this possible...

”Comrade Huang Kai, and you two, Zheng Zhengbin and Zhou Zhengxu,” Captain Gu said sternly to the men, who already looked like they had one foot in the grave. ”The city is treating this case with extreme seriousness. We need you to cooperate and come with us to give a statement and be questioned.”

His words made them tremble all over again.

”No, no, no... I already called my dad. He must be getting help right now, so why do I need to give a statement? No statement! I’m not giving a statement,” Young Master Zheng babbled, having been spoiled since birth and never having faced such a situation. His courage utterly failed him, and he frantically waved his hands, his face deathly pale, clearly terrified of going with Captain Gu.

”Since you refuse to cooperate, we’ll do this by the book,” Captain Gu ordered, his face impassive. ”Take them all away!”
