High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2297: Chapter 518: The Raven at the Edge Drinks

As the young Wizards of Absolution were happily chatting in the hall.

In the private room on the second floor of the Wandering Bar, there were two older wizards that the young wizards were familiar with, having a casual conversation. One of them was, of course, the owner of the Wandering Bar, the Wandering Wizard; the other was their Magic Script class professor, Mr. Montreia.

”Your actions are somewhat deviated from the plan,”

The Wandering Wizard, as usual, stayed behind his small bar counter, focusing on crafting his Time of Flowing Gold, his voice not loud, but enough to fill the small private room: ”The test subjects are out of control, the laboratories exposed... in just six months, the number of your labs sealed by the school has surpassed that of the past decade... Your Ravens haven’t been expelled from the school because of these incidents, don’t know if that’s lucky or unfortunate.”

The fortunate thing is that during school, conducting illegal experiments might be slightly covered by the school, unlike the Black Wizards in society, who would be directly thrown into the Black Prison by Trident Sword and Danghag.

Professor Montreya, sitting on the sofa, had most of his face hidden in the shadow of the hood, exposing only a small part of his pale chin, his voice as always deep and rigid: ”The experiment has reached a critical stage, and success requires a certain price.”

”Hypocritical.” The Wandering Wizard sneered, giving a brief evaluation.

The Professor raised his head, revealing his high cheekbones and grey hair like iron wires between his eyebrows, he frowned slightly: ”The Ravens are adults, they know what they’ve chosen... and adulthood means they should learn to do things they don’t want for more important matters.”

”It’s terrible for someone like you to be someone else’s professor, you will go to Hell.”

The bar owner sighed, took out a glass rod, stirring the liquid in the cup, making a clear clinking sound: ”As for ’more important matters’, haha, haven’t heard such a term for a long time... if we all break established plans and rules with such low excuses of ’need’, unscrupulously, the Wizard World would have long been destroyed by chaos.”

Professor Montreya didn’t hide the surprise in his eyes.

”If a professor in the school or a judge from Danghag said these words to me, I could understand.” He looked up and down at the Elder Wizard behind the bar, squinting slightly: ”But you? A notorious Black Wizard, what qualifications do you have to judge whether I am a qualified professor? ... As magic theory has developed to now, few people can deduce the direction of advancement through theory, more often, success is born through ’trial and error’... sometimes, plans really need a little surprise to stimulate success.”

”Just like the Great Sage of the North District, Korma.” The Wandering Wizard thought of an example.

The professor’s face disappeared back into the hood, heaving a sigh: ”Just like Korma.”

”The people in town have a very divided opinion of her.”

The Wandering Wizard withdrew the glass rod from the cup, tapped it on the outside walls, watched the drink’s liquid explode into starry specks, and mentioned casually: ”People from the North District like her and admire her, that doesn’t need explaining; people from the South District hate her, because her Northern District Wizards took away too many jobs from Low-level Wizards; West District merchants have complex feelings towards her, they both like the affordable wizards she provided, and hate her— you know, there used to be many jobs in town that only Tricksters would do; and then there’s the East Zone, where clan wizards always feel her promotion to Big Wizard was due to luck, coincidence, stepping in dog poop...”

”Such perceptions are extremely shallow.”

Professor Montreya interrupted the Wandering Wizard’s lengthy analysis: ”To say it without exaggeration, Korma is one of the smartest students I’ve ever met. She has a clearer vision than many other wizards, knows what she wants to do, and knows how to do it.

When other young people at the First University were still playing house on the campus, she already had a group of devoted followers in the North District and began to walk on the edge of ’The Code’, conducting magical experiments that even High-level Registered Wizards found terrifying. If any of her experiments went too far, she would have long been caught and thrown into the Black Prison by Danghag.”

”That’s the most criticized thing about the school.”

The Wandering Wizard’s lips twisted, letting out a strange, low laugh: ”Say it’s radical, it completely bans students from touching any Black Magic experiments; call it conservative, outside the school gates, around the perimeter are illegal laboratories set up by students and professors... I absolutely don’t believe the few Legends in the school can’t see such filth right under their noses.”

”You may understand it as principles, red lines, or restraint.”

Montreya seemed to dislike the tone of the Wandering Wizard and altered his stance slightly, speaking a few words for the school: ”If the school were willing to extend its ’law enforcement power’, then where truly is the boundary of this extension? School border, you could say right next to the school, makes sense; on Buji Island, you could say it’s school private property, makes sense; wherever a First University student reaches, you could say there’s jurisdiction over the student, also makes sense... An arm, once extended, has no boundary in its touch and jurisdiction until another arm breaks it... No matter how hard the truth is to accept, in fact, the school’s ability to restrain its ’meddlesome’ tendencies, this caution, is the fundamental reason you and I can still live on Buji Island in peace until now.”

”Very precise judgment.”

The Wandering Wizard, in an unreservedly complimentary tone, but with a turn of the speech, smoothly returned to the topic both initially discussed: ”So, you also agree that ’principles’ or ’restraint’ are very important concepts?”

This retort left Professor Montreya off guard.

He immediately fell silent.

The Wandering Wizard did not continue to push, raised his glass, tilted his head and thought: ”It’s interesting to mention, although I’ve rarely dealt with fellow student Korma, among the many First University students I know, I find you two very similar... Of course, not in appearance— I definitely did not imply you have a blood relation with her— I mean a certain temperament, or an essential similarity.”

The professor gave the bar owner a slightly speechless look:

”That’s because we have similar situations. Just like in others’ eyes, you and her are also very similar, for the same reason. We’re all pitiful creatures struggling to survive on the edge of the Wizard World, every step walking between abyss and cliff, a slight distraction and we’d crumble... In those times, being able to deal with Danghag and getting into the Black Prison would already be a very merciful conclusion.”
