Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Lucian ate before dawn and crossed an already crowded section of Caldris to reach the South Freight public cemetery as the registration clerks opened their windows.

The cemetery occupied three terraces between a workers’ market and a canal. Its oldest stones stood on the highest ground. Newer sections extended behind them in orderly rows divided by species, faith, family ownership, and public use. Resurrection alcoves had been built into a stone hall near the main gate so returning adventurers did not appear among ordinary mourners.

Lucian presented his visitor record.

”Current selection is the starter village churchyard.” the clerk said. ”Do you want this site registered as an option or selected immediately?”

”Selected.”

The clerk turned the record toward him. His estimated local resurrection cost appeared beside the cemetery rules. It was higher than it had been when he entered Corathen. Four weeks of travel work and improved Scout abilities had raised the amount required to restore him.

Lucian approved it.

[South Freight Public Cemetery registered.]

[Selected resurrection point updated.]

The first contract office opened across the road.

It served freight companies, warehouse associations, canal operators, and visiting workers. A board near the entrance separated jobs by license. Lucian ignored cargo lifting, team driving, dock repair, and armed warehouse security. The scouting section offered eight notices.

Three required knowledge of streets he had entered yesterday. One asked for a sewer survey and required certification Lucian did not possess. Two were guard positions described as scouting because the employer wanted one person to walk ahead of a wagon. Another involved finding whoever had been stealing sealed spice cases from a river warehouse.

The last wanted someone to map roof access across six blocks scheduled for chimney repairs.

Lucian took the roof notice to the clerk.

”Caldris work history?” The man asked.

Lucian provided his caravan reference.

The clerk read it. ”Good road record. The roofing company wants someone who knows which buildings share walls and which roof bridges are legal. I can submit you, but they will choose a local applicant first.”

”Submit it.”

The clerk added Lucian’s name and returned the reference. ”The Central Contract Exchange carries reconnaissance work from every district. River ferry is faster than a carriage this morning.”

Lucian left with directions.

The market outside had opened while he was inside. Food carts occupied the inner lane. Shift workers crossed toward warehouses. Freight clerks in colored coats carried manifests from the canal yards. Lucian allowed the crowd to establish its own movement before joining it.

Broken Outline required cover. In a city, other people provided more of it than trees.

He did not vanish. Faces simply passed over him when he matched the pace of the workers, avoided sudden changes, and allowed carts or taller pedestrians to interrupt a direct view. Quiet Step softened his boots beneath the market noise. The combination let him cross a crowded square without jostling anyone or attracting the sellers who called to every uncertain visitor.

The ferry dock stood two districts east.

Lucian paid for a northbound place and climbed to the open upper deck. The canal joined one of the main rivers crossing Caldris after half a mile. Warehouses gave way to residential towers, riverside temples, public baths, workshops, and long embankment parks built above flood channels.

One of the six great bridges crossed ahead.

Its stone approaches began several streets before the water. Three levels divided pedestrians, ordinary carts, and heavy freight. Shops occupied chambers inside the bridge towers. Houses had been built against the outer arches after the surrounding district outgrew the open ground.

The ferry passed beneath it without slowing.

Lucian opened his district map. The South Freight Ward had already disappeared beyond the first bend. The central rise remained too far away to see through the buildings. A palace tower appeared briefly between two roofs, then vanished when the river curved.

He had traveled for most of the morning and had not approached the center of the city.

The ferry landed beside an older internal wall.

Caldris’s official history identified the wall as the city’s former southern boundary. The city now continued for miles on both sides. Apartments occupied former guard towers. Merchants rented chambers inside widened gates. A tram road passed through a breach created long after the wall stopped serving as a defense.

Lucian followed the clerk’s directions through the gate and entered a district where the streets did not match one another.

Human stone houses leaned against dwarven foundations. Elven courtyards preserved living trees older than adjacent buildings. Orc-built loading halls used doors broad enough for teams to turn inside. Narrow fey balconies connected upper stories across alleys without visible supports. New construction filled whatever gaps remained.

The Central Contract Exchange occupied a former customs house near the old wall.

Its scouting boards were larger than the entire office in the freight district. Survey companies wanted monster routes outside the northern wards. Merchant houses wanted discreet observers at auctions. Courts hired licensed trackers to locate witnesses. City patrols posted temporary reconnaissance work after fires, collapses, and suspected smuggling.

Lucian could apply for some of it.

He could not begin most of it today.

Caldris licenses required a local address and in some cases sponsorship from an established company. His caravan record satisfied the experience requirement for road surveys. It did not prove he could follow someone through a city of fifteen million people.

He registered his address and class record, copied four notices, and left before midday.

The closest notice concerned a warehouse clerk believed to be selling delivery schedules. Lucian did not accept it. The employer wanted surveillance without explaining whether the clerk worked for a rival, a criminal group, or city investigators. A Scout who treated incomplete information as permission eventually followed the wrong person into a place where resurrection cost more than caution.

He spent the afternoon learning routes.

The maps gave him main streets, ferry stops, public buildings, markets, and district borders. They did not show which stairway allowed a person to cross the old wall without waiting at a tram gate. They did not show that a spice market blocked carts every third afternoon or that one river walk passed beneath six workshops before returning to daylight.

Lucian moved with no destination beyond the next useful connection.

That was when he noticed the first mark.

Three shallow scratches crossed the lower corner of an alley arch. They were too straight to be wear and too small to serve as a public route symbol. One ended in a hooked line pointing toward a covered passage.

Lucian kept walking.

Two streets later, the same three scratches appeared on a bridge post. The hook pointed down a stairway beside the river. A small circle had been added beneath it.

He followed the stairway without touching the mark.

The lower river walk bypassed a crowded intersection and returned to the upper street beyond a patrol station. Near the exit, another mark lacked the circle.

The symbols formed a route language.

Scouts used signs along roads, forests, and ruins. The marks in Caldris served the same purpose with different hazards. One indicated a passage. The circle appeared where the route avoided official attention. A short cut through the scratches marked the next alley, which ended at a locked gate.

Lucian added none of them to his public map. He stored their positions in Route Memory and looked for the person using them.

He found one near the second internal wall.

A quiet male courier carried a narrow wooden case beneath one arm. His gray coat had no company badge. He approached an alley, glanced at the low mark without breaking stride, and chose the covered passage it indicated.

Lucian followed at a distance.

The courier did not hurry. He crossed a laundry court, used a stair between two bakeries, and entered a market through its service lane. Lucian kept other pedestrians between them. When the route became empty, he allowed Broken Outline to blur his movement against awnings and stacked crates.

After four streets, the courier knew he was being followed.

Lucian saw it in the route, not the man’s face.

The next turn doubled back without saving distance. A door stood open at the end of the alley, offering a direct passage into the next road. A thin line of pale flour crossed the threshold where a follower would leave a clear print.

Lucian stepped over it.

The courier appeared in the reflection of a dark shop window ahead, watching without turning his head.

Lucian continued.

If the man wanted to lose him, Caldris offered thousands of people, doors, bridges, carts, and ferries. Instead, he selected quiet streets and left just enough distance for Lucian to remain behind him.

The route ended at a locksmith’s shop built into the base of the old wall.

Locks, keys, hinges, and small metal boxes filled the front windows. A sign offered secure parcel delivery in five surrounding districts. The courier entered through the public door.

Lucian waited across the street long enough to confirm nobody else followed, then went inside.

An older man stood behind the counter repairing the spring inside a brass lock. The courier was gone. A closed inner door offered the only exit Lucian could see.

”You followed one of my couriers through nine turns.” The older man said without looking up. ”Why?”

”I noticed the route marks. He noticed me and chose not to disappear.”

The man tested the lock with a narrow key. ”That answers how.”

Lucian placed his caravan reference on the counter. ”I am a Scout looking for work that requires scouting. The contract boards mostly want a guard with a different title or a local history I do not have yet.”

The man read the reference and set it beside the lock.

”We deliver parcels. We verify information. We recover goods whose ownership has become inconvenient to prove. Some of our clients prefer not to place their names on a public board.”

”I will not steal something because a stranger describes it as recovery.”

”Then do not accept recovery work.”

The answer came without offense. Lucian had stated a boundary, and the man treated it as information.

”What do you offer a new scout?” Lucian asked.

The older man opened a drawer and removed a bronze disk. One side carried the three scratches Lucian had seen on the alley arches. The other held a number.

”There is an abandoned tannery three districts north. From dusk until second bell, watch the alley behind it. Record every entrance, every person who watches the building, and every route someone could use to leave without entering the main street. Do not approach anyone. Do not enter the tannery.”

”Who am I watching for?”

”Anyone who behaves as though the abandoned building matters.”

”Payment?”

The man named an amount equal to two days of caravan scouting.

”Half if my report finds nothing?”

”Full payment for an accurate empty report. A person who invents activity to make his night sound useful does not receive another job.”

Lucian picked up the bronze disk.

”Where do I deliver the report?”

”Bring the token here before noon tomorrow. If your work is useful, we discuss what you can do next.”

The arrangement offered payment, not membership. Lucian had no name for the organization behind the shop and no promise that he would receive one.

That suited one night’s work.

He placed the token inside his coat and unfolded the district map.

The tannery was three districts away. Lucian left the locksmith’s shop to see the alley in daylight before he had to watch it in the dark.
