Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Captain Ressa Kale did not command the invasion when the third day began.

Nobody did.

Seven guilds issued separate route orders. Three noble houses claimed authority over the troops they funded. The city guard controlled the square but refused to control anyone after they entered the divine gate. Two military delegations had brought officers whose ranks meant nothing to adventurers from another country.

Kale stood on a crate inside the Fey Nights camp and let them argue for eleven minutes.

Then she placed the best map of the dungeon on a table beneath them.

”The core is not in this forest.” She said.

The argument continued.

Kale drove a knife through the map at the entrance to Level Two.

”It is not in the Highlands either. Every hour we spend deciding whose banner goes first is an hour the dungeon wins. The quest pays contribution. It does not say one guild must do everything.”

That earned silence from the people close enough to hear her.

She pointed toward separate marks on the map. ”The Amber League found the far threshold. The White Tower mapped the western ridges. The Crown Shields built this camp. Record all of it. Share everything that gets us farther. Fight about the reward after there is a reward to fight about.”

The first agreement lasted until breakfast. It was long enough.

Clerks created a contribution ledger. Guild cartographers copied one approved route map. Healers formed stations that treated anyone sent back from the front, regardless of insignia. Crafters combined spare parts that had previously sat in seven smaller stores.

Officers divided the force by purpose instead of ownership.

Scouts went first. Shield formations followed. Assault groups rotated forward while fresh fighters waited behind them. Porters moved food, water, arrows, replacement weapons, and healing supplies from the city to the forest camp and from the forest camp toward Level Two.

The ledger created its own problems.

Three parties claimed credit for discovering the prison route. Two guilds claimed the same bridge. A noble officer demanded that every kill made by troops he equipped count toward his personal contribution.

Kale told the clerks to record the disputes without settling them.

”The system that opened a passage to this dungeon can decide whose numbers matter.” She said. ”Our numbers are distances, supplies, and people ready to move.”

The practical totals were less impressive than the crowd at the gate suggested. Thousands of restored attackers were present, and new participants entered every hour, but many lacked the equipment or discipline to hold a military line. Kale assigned them to guarded work crews, carrying teams, and reserve groups matched with experienced leaders.

Some left rather than accept those roles.

More stayed when the clerks confirmed that building a road and carrying healing supplies also counted as contribution.

The divine reward did not merely encourage cooperation. It gave people who could not defeat a dungeon monster a reason to support someone who could.

For the first time, thousands of attackers entered Max’s dungeon with the same plan.

”They made an army.” Anna said, unable to keep the worry out of her voice.

Max watched colored markers move across her command map. ”They made the beginning of one. Let’s see if they can keep it up.”

”Is that distinction comforting?”

”No.”

The third day, adventurers crossed Fey Nights in less than two hours.

Sigmund made them pay for every familiar route. He moved ambushes, attacked the approved markers, and sent fey hounds against the porters. The attackers expected all three. Rear guards protected the supply line. Engineers carried material to replace bridges before the defenders could collapse them. When fairies altered the signs, scouts checked them against distances recorded on the master map.

The forest still killed hundreds, but it did not break the column.

Behind it, the new organization faced its first test. Sigmund led a second attack after the forward troops had passed. Fey hounds blinked through the rear guards while satyrs cut the ropes supporting the repaired bridge. A frightened labor company abandoned two wagons in the crossing and blocked everyone behind it.

Yesterday, the entire route would have stopped.

Today (On day three), a reserve officer diverted foot traffic to the ford. Engineers pulled one wagon apart where it stood. Crafters recovered the wheels while shield bearers held the fey away from the workers.

The delay lasted twenty-seven minutes.

Anna marked it on the command map. ”They are learning how to fail without collapsing.”

Max watched the column begin moving again. ”That may be worse than learning how to win.”

Kale established a second supply post near the threshold to the Orc Highlands. The structure was little more than a barricade, two canvas roofs, and stacks of sealed crates. Its position mattered more than its walls. Everything beyond it could be supported without crossing the entire forest again.

Hizon attacked before the post was complete.

”Why is Hizon in charge of the defense on the second level instead of the orcs?” Anna asked Max. She didn’t understand why he pulled out all the orc forces.

”The orcs are strong and good warriors, but the forces they have stationed on the second level are small. I had them join with the Orc forces in Corathen. Unlike the other beginning levels, the orcs have a lot of single type beasts.”

”Wouldn’t those strong beasts that the adventures normally fight in the arena be perfect to pit against the invaders?”

”You aren’t wrong, but space is limited on the second floor. I want a unified army instead of orc hunting groups and random beasts. That is why I asked Hizon to secure the second floor while the orcs and beasts have retreated to the 5th floor. Plus, Hizon has learned quite a bit from running the defense dungeon. I want to give him an opportunity. If he does well, we could make good use of him in the future.”

Anna thought about it before nodding. ”I guess that make sense.”

Goblins riding giant bullet ants came over the hills in three waves. They struck the workers, turned toward the supply crates, and withdrew before the invaders’ heavy formations could close around them. Hobgoblins followed through the confusion.

The first counterattack failed.

Kale sent the second down both routes.

Most of the invasion moved along the arena road. It had room for formations and wagons, and the defenders had no way to mistake the main threat. Shield bearers advanced in overlapping rows. Archers fired above them. Mages shaped the open ground into barriers that prevented mounted goblins from circling the entire column.

At the same time, smaller units entered the western ridges.

They did not try to conquer every prison chamber. Scouts marked intersections. Rogues opened gates for the troops behind them. Compact assault parties fought through the defenders blocking the route and ignored cells that did not lead forward.

Hizon could reinforce either approach.

He could not place the same defenders in both.

The Goblin King remained on the arena route. His aura strengthened every goblin and hobgoblin within its reach. The colossal stag beetle advanced beside him, crushing conjured barriers beneath its legs and overturning the first shield line with one sweep of its horns.

Max felt the formation break through the dungeon map.

Quin moved before he asked.

”Reserve only.” Max reminded him.

”I know.”

Quin appeared behind the second line, not in front of it. He helped Hizon turn a collapse into a withdrawal. Goblins fell back around the beetle instead of dying in a surrounded mass. When the invaders pursued, giant bullet ants emerged from concealed burrows and struck their exposed sides.

Kale stopped the pursuit.

That decision cost her the chance to destroy Hizon’s retreating formation, but it preserved the army she needed to reach the end of the level.

Max noticed. So did Hizon.

”She learns while fighting.” The Goblin King offered his opinion after his forces regrouped.

”Most good commanders do.” Max answered.

Hizon looked toward the lines forming below the ridge. ”Most adventurers do not have this many people to teach.”

The western force emerged behind the arena defenses in the early afternoon.

The two attacking columns did not meet cleanly. Prison-route scouts arrived first and fought alone until the main advance broke through. A bridge destroyed by the defenders forced hundreds to climb through a ravine. One noble’s troops ignored Kale’s rotation order and exhausted themselves in an attack that gained less than a hundred yards.

It was still enough to change the battle.

Hizon lost the arena.

The Goblin King fought at the final approach while the defenders withdrew toward the Level Three threshold. The stag beetle stood across the road behind him. Its armored body stopped the invasion until mages collapsed both sides of the cut and buried its legs beneath stone.

Hizon’s aura ended when he fell.

The goblins did not vanish with him. They continued fighting until Kale’s forward companies secured the threshold.

Hundreds of attackers cheered.

Kale ordered them to build walls.

The first people into Level Three found the Stonewing above them.

The dwarven airship hung above broken mesas and deep valleys. The routes divided between the Stonewing in the sky and the Elven held ground below. Dawnhoof riders watched from distant ridges. The Shattered Watch guarded one of the approaches. Far beyond both routes, Veyrath’s shadow crossed the clouds.

The scouts stayed long enough to record what they saw.

Then the Stonewing’s guns opened fire.

The invasion retreated behind the threshold and began carrying stone into place.

Max studied the new position through his interface. Three days earlier, strangers had run through a gate and died to the first red cap they met. Now engineers measured walls inside his third level while quartermasters calculated how much food an army would need to reach the fourth.

The difference was not levels or equipment. It was organization.

Dungeons were built to challenge parties. Parties entered with limited supplies, solved what stood in front of them, and left when too many members were wounded.

This force left healers behind the front. It replaced exhausted people with fresh ones. It used one group to discover a trap and another to cross after the trap was known. When a route became too dangerous, it built a road somewhere else.

It was no longer trying to clear his dungeon. It was invading it.

Anna’s map flashed with a report from the Sanctuary.

Max opened it immediately.

No hostile force had reached a civilian route. The problem was a crowd around the sealed Level Three portal. Visitors had heard that an army entered the third level and wanted to watch. Sanctuary guards moved them back before anyone damaged the barrier.

”Keep the normal arrival halls open.” Max said. ”Add another line of guards around the combat portals.”

”Already done.” Anna replied. ”Corathen’s governments also received the challenge update.”

”What are they doing?”

”Preparing their own districts. None of them expect an army tomorrow. They would prefer not to discover they were wrong.”

That was sensible. The invaders still had to deal with an airship, a dragon, the Dread Fort, and more than a hundred thousand undead between them and the level 5.

Max no longer considered any of those barriers separately.

The attackers would bring every map from the barrier before it. Every camp would shorten their supply line. Every surviving scout would teach the people coming after them.

At midnight, Hizon returned with all of his defeated forces.

The Fey defenders restored behind the invasion’s held routes. Every attacker killed during the day’s advance returned as well. White light filled the forest camps, the Highland positions, and the fortification at the Level Three threshold.

The broken arena walls remained broken. The western prison gates remained open. The buried bridge remained beneath the ravine. Supply crates emptied during the day’s fighting did not refill.

The army had to protect a longer road with the same problems behind it.

It also had more soldiers than it possessed before midnight.

New national standards had appeared around the gate in the distant city. Lines of uniformed troops waited behind wagons built for a campaign. Max didn’t know the name of the city or even the country on the other side of the portal where the invaders were coming from, but it was clear to all that they were getting serious.

Captain Kale looked from the uniformed troops to the map of Level Three.

On the fourth day, the invaders become a real army instead of just resembling one.
