Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The caravan reached Crag Mountain shortly after midday on the fourth day.

Tomas Newl recognized the public entrance from the merchant packet before the guide identified it. A broad road entered the base of the mountain through doors tall enough for loaded wagons. Stables extended to both sides. Stone yards separated arriving caravans from travelers preparing to leave, and gnome attendants directed each group toward the space suited to its animals and cargo.

There was no forest filled with redcaps.

There was no hostile gate.

The normal entrance had been built for traffic.

Tomas remained with the caravan until its wagon was assigned a stable lane. Kale’s order allowed him to enter openly. It did not allow him to abandon the people who had carried him across four days of road because his destination appeared.

He collected his pack, travel archive, and the sealed case containing Kale’s letter. The university seal he used during the search remained in an outer pocket. His city credentials went into his hand.

A gnome clerk waited beside the registration line.

”Name and declared purpose?” The clerk asked.

”Tomas Newl. I represent the city where the seven-day challenge gate opened. Captain Ressa Kale authorized me to request formal contact with Dungeon Master Max Clarkson.”

The clerk looked at him for one quiet second.

”Are you carrying active curses, uncontrolled creatures, unstable spatial items, or a portal anchor?”

”No. I have a secured message plate and ordinary enchanted records.”

”Place the plate in the inspection tray. Keep the records inside your case.”

Tomas obeyed.

The clerk checked the plate for an open connection, returned it, and added a blue marker to Tomas’s visitor record.

”Your meeting request has been forwarded. That is not an appointment. You may enter the Sanctuary and use its public services while you wait for a response. Sanctuary protections prevent violence outside approved combat areas. Attempts to damage portals, restricted doors, or another visitor’s property remain violations even when the protection stops the damage.”

”Understood.”

The portal stood at the far end of the arrival hall. Wagons entered through two broad arches. Individuals used a row of smaller openings beside them. Tomas joined the passenger line.

The mountain disappeared behind him.

He entered the Sanctuary beneath a bright false sky.

The merchant guides had described the central square, inns, shops, training facilities, Arena, hospital, and public portals. Tomas did not need to stop at each one to prove Perren’s account accurate. He found the visitor office named on his temporary record, secured a room for the night, and sent the caravan guide a confirmation that he no longer required return passage.

Then he waited.

The response arrived two hours later.

[Meeting request accepted.]

[Time: One hour from notice.]

[Location route attached.]

The route led to a small administrative building near the central square. A gnome at the entrance checked Tomas’s name, examined the seal on Kale’s case without opening it, and guided him to a meeting room on the second floor.

The room contained one rectangular table, six chairs, a water pitcher, and a window overlooking a street busy enough that nobody outside paid attention to the building. No armed guards waited against the walls.

Max Clarkson entered through the opposite door.

Tomas had read every public description he could find. Most agreed the Dungeon Master appeared human, young for his authority, and easier to approach than the owners of smaller dungeons. Those reports did not make Tomas forget that the man across the table controlled the ground beneath them and had personally appeared when the invasion crossed a restricted boundary.

Tomas stood.

”Dungeon Master. Thank you for accepting the request.”

”Tomas Newl.” Max indicated the chair rather than requiring a longer greeting. ”You said you represent the city where the challenge gate opened.”

They sat across from one another.

”Yes, I come from Ravelle. Captain Ressa Kale asked me to make contact if I confirmed the dungeon’s location.” Tomas placed the sealed case on the table. ”I have her letter, my orders, and a summary of what our city (Ravelle) knows.”

Max opened his hand above the seal. A system inspection passed over the case without breaking it.

”You may open it.”

Tomas removed Kale’s letter first. Her seal identified her as the officer who had coordinated the challenge army. The document did not demand access, compensation, or answers. It confirmed Tomas’s authority to speak on her behalf, stated that Kale sought peaceful contact, and requested a means for future messages.

Max read the entire page before setting it down.

”Were you part of the force that entered my dungeon?” he asked.

”No. I worked from the municipal archive after the gate closed. Captain Kale commanded the combined force inside the challenge and organized the search afterward.”

”What did the participants know when they entered?”

Max was curious about how things happened form the other side. He was already familiar with how things went down on his side.

Tomas opened the summary.

”An unknown divine or system authority created the gate in Ravelle’s central square. The quest instructed registered participants to enter a one-of-a-kind dungeon and capture its core. It offered contribution rewards and restored dead participants at midnight during the seven days. The quest did not identify you, Crag Mountain, the Sanctuary, or a normal public entrance.”

Max gave no sign that any part surprised him.

”Did the quest tell them where the gate led?”

”Only that it led to the target dungeon. Our diviners could not translate the connection into a direction or a measurable distance. The residue crossed boundaries they could recognize and could not reproduce.”

”Can they reopen it?”

”No. Not with anything our city possesses. Several groups still want to try.”

Tomas passed him the search summary. It separated confirmed observations from reports and assumptions. Kale’s archive had preserved the same categories used during the first meeting: what the invaders saw, what Corathian residents told them, and what later public documents established.

Max read the page concerning Crag Mountain.

”How widely is this location known now?”

”The route is public in this region. Our search made the connection, but we were not the only people asking questions. A private core-hunting group obtained the same lead. I cannot give you a complete list of its members, I don’t know them. I can give you the intermediaries and route brokers our archive has identified.”

”Do they know where my core is?”

”No. They know the challenge force crossed restricted territory in Corathen and believed it had approached something important. They also know the Sanctuary prevents ordinary violence.”

Max rested one hand on the report. ”The challenge connection was not one of my public entrances. I did not place an army in your city or invite it here.”

”Captain Kale reached the same conclusion. The quest forced an objective on both sides. It ended when the gate closed. She does not intend to continue it.”

”And the city?”

Tomas had prepared for that question.

”The city does not have one intention. Merchants want trade. Universities want to study the dungeon. Temples want verified rules for Corathen’s graveyards. Military officers want to understand a territory that held the invading force. Core hunters want the core. Captain Kale controls none of them outside her authority. Her goal is to create a lawful contact route before the most reckless groups arrive.”

The complete answer did not make the situation safer. It made it usable.

Max turned to Kale’s proposed terms.

She offered advance warnings about organized hostile groups connected to the former invasion, an exchange of public contact information, and a named representative responsible for separating official messages from private demands. In return, she asked Max to receive those messages and provide a clear statement of the rules that would apply to visitors from the city.

”People from your city may use the public entrance under the same rules as other visitors.” Max said. ”Participation in the challenge does not make someone an enemy forever. Attempting to locate or capture my core after the challenge does. So does military action against my dungeon or Corathen.”

Tomas wrote the distinction.

”Would you accept a formal delegation?”

”A small one, declared in advance. Not an armed expedition described as an escort.”

”Captain Kale expected that condition.”

”I will not promise access beyond what other lawful visitors receive. Public facilities are public. Restricted areas remain restricted. Corathen has its own governments and laws; my agreement to meet a representative does not grant authority over its cities.”

Tomas added that as well. ”Understood.”

Max asked for the names of the known route brokers. Tomas provided them with the limits attached. One sold information to anyone. Another worked regularly for three private guilds. The third had passed Crag Mountain guides to an unidentified buyer after Tomas reserved his caravan place.

”You believe someone may already be here.” Max said.

”I believe someone left the portal city with fewer people and faster mounts. They may have arrived before me or chosen another route. I have no confirmed name. But with a dungeon as unique and impressive as yours, its hard not to believe dungeon core hunters aren’t already here.”

Max did not open a viewing window or explain what the dungeon core already recorded about its visitors. He placed the warning beside Kale’s letter.

”Send new information through the same office that arranged this meeting.” He said. ”Mark messages from Captain Kale with her seal and your city archive code. I will receive them. That is not an agreement to every request inside them.”

”She asked for communication, not automatic consent.” Tomas said in agreement.

”Then we understand one another.”

The meeting continued without becoming a negotiation over everything the two territories might someday want.

Tomas asked whether Max would object to merchants purchasing public maps and sending them home. Max did not. He asked whether official observers could enter the first four levels. They could enter as adventurers under ordinary rules, not as a military reconnaissance unit. A university could request interviews with willing residents or visitors. It could not treat the Sanctuary’s people as dungeon objects available for study.

Max asked what Kale wanted from a cooperative relationship beyond warnings.

”A way to prevent rumors from becoming another army.” Tomas said. ”If the city hears that you are preparing an attack, Captain Kale wants someone she can ask. If you hear that our city is preparing one, you should have someone who can answer. Trade and research can follow if both sides find them useful.”

”That is reasonable.”

Max opened a blank document through the dungeon menu.

He wrote a response addressed to Captain Ressa Kale. It acknowledged Tomas as her representative for the first contact, accepted an exchange of warnings, permitted a small declared delegation to request entry, and repeated the public and restricted-access boundaries discussed at the table. It did not promise a portal, a closer entrance, military assistance, or privileged access to Corathen.

Tomas found no ambiguity in the response.

”I can transmit a secured copy tonight.” Tomas said. ”The physical original will follow through our courier network.”

”Do both.”

Max attached a verification mark for Kale’s archive.

Tomas carried the sealed response to the Sanctuary message office. A clerk assigned him a shielded room and checked his cipher plate for outside interference before closing the door.

He placed Max’s document beneath the plate, entered Kale’s archive code, and began transmitting the first page.
