Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The first people into the Map Room did not approach the table.

They remained near the doors and stared.

Max had expected questions about the graveyards, the cities, or the new portal. Instead, the room filled with the silence of people trying to understand the distance between one edge of the model and the other.

A gnome cartographer stood beside a brass scale at the nearest railing.

ONE INCH REPRESENTS TWENTY MILES.

Several adventurers read the sign, looked toward the mountains on the opposite side of the room, and read it again.

More people entered behind them. The upper walkways filled first. Gnomes opened the lower terraces and guided the crowd around the map in one direction so no one became trapped against a railing. The model remained visible from every level.

The capital attracted the most attention. Tiny lights marked major roads and public buildings. Even people who had never visited a city large enough to contain ten thousand residents recognized that the place was enormous.

The racial cities drew different crowds. Dwarves gathered beside the eastern mountains. Elves studied the forest settlements. A group of orcs from the Sanctuary arena pushed toward a view of the western highlands until a gnome reminded them that pushing would not make the room larger.

The fey city was discovered by accident.

A young archer leaned over the railing and disappeared from the view of her companions. From that angle, the forest canopy separated and revealed towers grown around pale trees, bridges suspended between branches, and lights beneath the roots.

Her shout brought half the terrace to her position.

Max waited until the initial rush settled. A small platform extended from the northern side of the room when he approached it. He did not need to raise his voice. The chamber carried his words without making them echo.

”Welcome to the Grand Map Room.”

Conversations ended. People turned away from the model and faced him.

Max rested one hand on the railing. Anna stood beside him with her clipboard, while Quin remained several steps behind them.

”Before I explain the map, there is something I should explain about the first four levels.” Max said. ”They were never four unrelated challenges.”

Confusion moved through the audience.

That did not surprise him. Max had included the beginning of the story in the Fey Nights information panel, but most adventurers opened dungeon information long enough to check the recommended party size and enemy list. Very few cared why a group had entered a foggy forest in the first place.

”The information for Fey Nights mentions a king who sent five adventurers to investigate reports of a distant threat.” Max continued. ”Those five became lost in the fey lands and had to find their way out. After escaping the forest, they were captured by orcs.”

Some members of Golden Axe’s guild exchanged glances. Every adventurer in the room understood what came next.

”They earned their freedom, traveled with the dwarves, and survived the destruction of an airship. Their journey eventually brought them to the Dread Fort, where they defeated Kildra and learned what the king had sent them to find.”

Max touched the edge of the map.

The light inside the room dimmed. An image rose above Corathen. It did not recreate Golden Axe’s battle. Dark figures simply spread across the distant horizon while fey, orcs, dwarves, elves, and five human silhouettes stood together before them.

”The threat was an undead army large enough that no single species could stop it. The living eventually united against the tide.”

The image faded.

”Levels One through Four are a shortened retelling of that journey. They are also training. Awareness in the fey forest. Technical ability in the Orc Highlands. Fighting while moving and responding to a larger battlefield on the third level. Planning your own approach to the Dread Fort.”

Max looked across the room.

”The path is not always identical. There are choices no one has discovered, and choices that can change who assists you later. But the journey leads toward the same threshold.”

He gestured toward the country beneath them.

”This is Corathen. The kingdom that sent those five adventurers into the distance, and the country in which their journey became ancient history.”

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then someone near the back quietly said. ”It was all one story.”

Max nodded. ”A story almost none of you read.”

Laughter moved through the room. It remained restrained, but the tension broke.

”You hid it in the information page.” Someone said. The speaker sounded more embarrassed than accusatory.

”I placed information in the information page.” Max answered. This time the laughter was louder.

Anna covered a smile with one hand. Max waited until the room settled again.

”Golden Axe has already entered Corathen. Their success opened the level for everyone. You do not need to repeat their clear before entering.”

That caused more noise than the story.\ Several people began talking at once. A gnome near the platform lifted a small bell but did not ring it. The sight of the bell was enough for those nearest him to quiet the others.

”The previous levels are strongly recommended for anyone who intends to travel independently or fight.” Max said. ”Corathen will not make its enemies weaker because you skipped your training. However, a merchant does not need to defeat Kildra before opening a shop. A carpenter does not need to survive an airship crash before accepting work. Families, craftsmen, scholars, healers, and visitors are allowed to enter.”

”Will separate groups receive separate copies of the country?” A party leader asked after being acknowledged.

”No.” Max said. ”Corathen is shared. If you purchase the last room at an inn, the next party cannot enter another copy of that inn. If you repair a bridge, other travelers use the repaired bridge. The smaller dungeons inside Corathen may be instances, but the country around them is not.”

Several guild representatives immediately began reconsidering how many members they intended to send through the gate at once.

An older merchant raised his hand and waited until Max acknowledged him. ”Dungeon Master, will the entrance place everyone in that large city?”

He pointed toward the capital.

”No. Everyone enters near the southern village.” Max indicated the small cluster of buildings. ”Golden Axe arrived inside its church because they were resurrected after the Final Trial. Normal visitors arrive at a stone gateway outside the village. In most villages and every city you will find a portal that can transport you back to the sanctuary”

The road from the village illuminated. It passed through several small settlements before joining a larger royal road.

”How long to the capital?” The merchant asked.

”Several weeks by ordinary wagon if nothing delays you.”

The merchant stared at the distance with a thoughtful expression rather than disappointment.

”There are closer towns and cities.” Max added. ”The capital is not the only place worth visiting.”

He indicated the nearest human city, the dwarven mountains, an orc settlement built around a broad river, and the edge of the ancient fey forest.

”Major settlements are marked because their locations are common knowledge inside Corathen. The map does not show monsters, treasure, hidden locations, active battles, or the position of other visitors. It is a map, not a way to spy on the country.”

Anna stepped forward when Max finished.

”The graveyard markers are separate from the settlement markers.” She said. ”Every person entering Level Five begins with the starter village churchyard as their selected resurrection point. You must physically visit another graveyard and register it before selecting it here.”

A section of the map enlarged above the table. The starter village church stood beside a fenced cemetery. A system example appeared above it.

[Selected Resurrection Point: Starter Village Churchyard.]

[Current Local Resurrection Cost: Calculated at time of death.]

[Insufficient dungeon coins will result in transfer to the Sanctuary hospital.]

”The cost depends upon the amount of power required to restore you.” Anna explained. ”Stronger bodies cost more. The system will show an estimate before you enter, and the required dungeon coins will be removed automatically if you die.”

”Can we choose the hospital instead?” A healer asked.

Max answered. ”Yes. You can be resurrected for free in the Sanctuaries hospital. But if you resurrect in a graveyard you will not have to wait 12 hours for the resurrection buff to re-activate.”

This was something new Max wanted to implement. While it sounded similar to the Fast Passes that updated the revival buff. People rarely bought those. Only the richest did. With this new system, Max only reclaimed dungeon coins equivalent to cost with no mark up.

That ended several whispered plans before anyone attempted them.

The last warning appeared above the country.

[Corathen is a persistent level.]

[Damage outside designated instances will not automatically reset.]

[The deaths of Corathen’s residents are permanent.]

The room became quiet again.

”The people living there are protected by the revival buff, aren’t they?” Another adventurer asked.

”You are protected by the revival buff.” Max said. ”The residents are not.”

He did not explain eternal souls or how the dungeon core recycled them. From the perspective of a family that lost a father, or a town that lost its healer, the difference did not matter. The person they knew would never return.

”The Sanctuary prevents violence outside the arena.” Max continued. ”Corathen does not. It has laws, guards, courts, prisons, armies, and people capable of defending themselves. Do not mistake your resurrection for permission to treat their lives as disposable.”

No one laughed at that warning.

Max allowed the words to settle before dismissing the platform. The map returned to its normal light, and gnomes opened the selection stations around the room.

Most people approached the capital first.

They studied the roads leading toward it, the towns along the way, and the graveyard symbols they could not yet select. Merchants compared routes. Adventurers examined mountain passes. Dwarves argued over which eastern city possessed the largest visible forge district.

Others remained near the starter village.

They examined its fields, mill, church, smithy, inn, and the road leaving its northern gate. The village was tiny compared to the rest of Corathen, but it was the only part anyone from the Prime Universe could reach before nightfall.

Out in the square, before the a portal.

[Level Five: The Kingdom of Corathen.]

[Do you wish to enter?]

The first person to accept was not an adventurer.

He was a baker carrying a notebook.
