Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Max was in the Sanctuary when the notification arrived.

[Kildra, Warden of the Last Threshold, defeated.]

[Dread Fort completed for the first time.]

The messages were expected. Max had watched Golden Axe’s progress through the dungeon menu without opening a viewing window. He knew where they were, how many remained alive, and when they entered the throne room. He had no intention of sitting through every strike after spending weeks testing Kildra himself.

He was more interested in what came afterward.

Anna stood beside his desk while flipping through sheets of paper on her dungeon clipboard. Quin waited near the wall, dressed in his usual black armor. All three watched the Final Trial entry on the menu change from active to complete.

[Golden Axe has crossed the Last Threshold.]

[Level Five has been accessed.]

[Public access is now available.]

[Sanctuary expansion prepared: Grand Map Room.]

[Deploy?]

Max selected yes.

Stone moved somewhere beyond the office walls. The sound was distant, but the vibration passed through the floor as the Sanctuary reshaped the edge of its central square. Max had designed the room months ago. He had chosen the building’s position, its doors, the shape of its ceiling, and the exact size of the model it would contain. The first access to Level Five had simply been the trigger he selected for its deployment.

”How much room did you leave around it?” Anna asked.

”Enough for another building on either side and a wide road behind it.”

She made a note. ”And enough space for the crowd that is about to appear?”

Max glanced toward the office window. People had already begun moving toward the central square. The new portal opening would have been enough to draw attention. A building rising from an empty plot made it impossible to ignore.

”Probably not.” Max admitted.

Anna smiled and added another note.

Before leaving, Max opened the dungeon ledger. Level Five’s completed purchases filled more pages than every other level combined. Land was only the beginning. Rivers needed water sources. Forests needed plants, animals, and weather. Roads connected villages to towns, towns to cities, and cities to places large enough that the word city felt inadequate.

Then came the people.

Humans occupied most of the central kingdom, but they were far from alone. Dwarven cities had been built into three mountain chains. Elven cities spread through old forests without cutting away everything that made the forests worth living in. Orc cities occupied the high plains and western hills. The fey possessed a city hidden beneath an ancient canopy where roads changed according to the season.

The capital had cost more than some complete dungeon cores.

Max had also purchased farms, mines, schools, temples, armies, government offices, sewers, wells, cemeteries, monsters, monster spawners, and enough eternal souls to make the level feel alive before the first outsider entered it.

His remaining balance sat at the bottom of the ledger.

Less than two hundred million DP remained.

It was an enormous reserve by the standards of almost any dungeon master. It was also less than a fifth of what Max possessed when he first woke beside the dungeon core.

Quin stepped closer when Max remained on the page. ”Is there a problem, boss?”

”No. I was remembering when DC called fifteen million DP expensive.”

[Fifteen million DP remains expensive.]

”Not compared to a country.”

[Most dungeon masters do not purchase countries.]

Max closed the ledger. He did not regret the expenditure. Level Five was the reason he had saved so much instead of spending every profitable month improving the earlier levels. Even so, the country was nowhere near finished.

It might never be finished.

There were open regions with only the basic settlements and wildlife needed to support them. Some cities had dozens of available story lines while others had only local work, established factions, and the ordinary problems of a living population. The borders could be extended. Islands could be added off the coast. If the number of visitors ever reached the millions Max wanted, the country might eventually evolve into a continent of multiple countries.

He intended to continue building it for the rest of his life.

”You are doing that thing again.” Anna said.

Max looked at her. ”What thing?”

”Planning twenty years ahead when we have a crowd forming outside today.”

She offered him her hand. Max took it and allowed her to pull him away from the desk.

The new Map Room stood on the eastern side of the central square. It was a broad circular building of pale stone, with a domed roof and four sets of double doors. No banners covered it. The words GRAND MAP ROOM had been carved above each entrance in letters large enough to read from the portal plaza.

Gnomes in Sanctuary uniforms had already placed ropes around the unfinished approach. They directed people away from the last sections of rising pavement while another group installed signs explaining that the room would open after inspection.

Max, Anna, and Quin entered through the rear doors.

The interior was larger than the building should have held. Terraced walkways surrounded a single tabletop landscape that occupied most of the chamber. Mountains rose from its northern and eastern edges. Rivers crossed forests, plains, marshes, and cultivated valleys before reaching two separate seas. Thousands of tiny buildings marked settlements.

Dozens of waist-high selection stations lined the outer wall. Each contained a smaller blank copy of the tabletop that would display only the locations available to the person using it. The central model was meant for study. The stations prevented hundreds of hands from reaching over one another whenever someone needed to use the interactive map.

Max had also given the Map Room space to grow. If the visitor population reached the numbers he wanted, the terraces could extend into new galleries and additional selection stations could appear without replacing the original map.

At the center of the country stood the capital.

Even reduced to the scale of the map, the city covered a space wider than Max’s desk. Walls encircled old districts while newer neighborhoods extended beyond them. Towers rose beside temple domes, market halls, arenas, parks, and bridges. Roads left the city in every direction.

Smaller human cities spread along those roads. Dwarven symbols marked mountains. Elven settlements appeared beneath living canopies. Orc cities were built around rivers, quarries, and broad training grounds. Deep inside the largest western forest, the fey city could be seen only when the viewer stood at the correct angle.

Near the southern edge of the kingdom sat a village small enough to cover with one hand.

A single point glowed beside its church.

[Default Level Five resurrection site.]

[Starter Village Churchyard.]

Every other graveyard marker remained dark.

Max placed his hand above the village. A private window opened.

[Local resurrection enabled.]

[Resurrection cost will be calculated according to the deceased adventurer’s ability score.]

[If sufficient dungeon coins are available, the cost will be deducted and the adventurer will revive at the selected graveyard without the need to wait for the revival to come back online.]

[If sufficient funds are unavailable, the adventurer will be transferred to the Sanctuary hospital and they must remain in the sanctuary until the revival buff is reactivated.]

”And selecting one does not transport anyone.” Anna said while reading from her clipboard.

”Correct. They have to reach and register a graveyard before they can use it. The Map Room only lets them change between places they have already registered.”

Quin examined the tiny roads leading away from the starter village. ”That will stop people from selecting the capital and killing themselves to avoid the journey.”

”That was the intention.”

Max moved to another menu.

The resident rules mattered more.

Every dwarf, elf, orc, fey, human, and other resident of Corathen (Level 5) was an eternal soul purchased through the dungeon core. On the first four levels, an eternal soul returned with the same identity because the instance reset. Level Five did not reset.

If an orc named Hargan died in an Orc Highlands instance, Hargan would be present the next time another party entered. If an orc named Hargan died in Corathen, that person was gone. The eternal soul would eventually return somewhere in the country under a new name, with a new appearance, history, and identity.

The soul remained Max’s resource. The death remained real to everyone who had known the person.

”No automatic restoration of settlements.” Max said.

[Confirmed.]

”No replacing a dead resident in the same family or position.”

[Confirmed. Recycled eternal souls will be assigned according to population requirements and will not retain the previous identity.]

Quin looked across the model. ”Actions will last here.”

”They need to.” Max answered. ”If someone destroys a shop, it stays destroyed until it is rebuilt. If they murder the owner, his family does not get him back the next morning. In fact they might higher an assassin to deal with the adventure or take some other action. This is supposed to be a world, not a stage that resets when the audience leaves.”

That rule would need to be made clear before people entered. Max did not intend to explain eternal souls to the public, but every visitor would receive a warning that Corathen’s residents were persistent and that deaths outside designated instances were permanent.

The last decision Max needed to make involved dungeon access.

Max could require completion of Dread Fort before allowing anyone through the new portal. That would ensure most visitors could defend themselves, but it would also keep out the people Level Five needed. Merchants, farmers, craftsmen, scholars, and families had no reason to fight an elder dryad, survive an orc arena, cross a dragon’s valley, and defeat Kildra before opening a shop or visiting relatives.

”Open it to everyone.” Max said.

[Confirm unrestricted Level Five access?]

”Confirm. Put the warning before entry and make them accept it.”

Anna read the final version from her clipboard.

[Level Five: The Kingdom of Corathen.]

[No minimum level requirement.]

[Enemy strength varies by region and does not adjust to match visitors.]

[Completion of Levels One through Four is strongly recommended before independent wilderness travel.]

[Corathen is persistent. Damage and resident deaths outside designated instances will not reset.]

[Level Five resurrection penalties apply.]

[Do you wish to enter?]

Max approved it.

The inspection ropes outside disappeared. Gnomes opened all four sets of doors, and the noise from the central square poured into the chamber.

People entered slowly at first.

Then they saw the map.

The noise stopped.

Max stood beside Anna on the upper walkway and watched hundreds of adventurers understand that the small village beneath his hand was only the beginning.
