Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The final day began with an army dividing itself.

Most of it could not enter Corathen.

The corridor through the Dead Lands remained open, but restored undead attacked it from both sides. Kildra assaulted the broken ridge before sunrise. Veyrath struck Level Three’s supply route again. Hizon and Sigmund increased their attacks behind the front.

The invasion needed thousands of people to keep every captured bridge, camp, and gate useful.

It needed thousands more to search a country.

New participants still entered the gate in the distant city. They followed six days of maps to a war other people had carried most of the way. Some stayed to protect the route. Others crossed into Corathen with flying mounts, divination tools, fast horses, or spells chosen for distance instead of combat.

Kale divided the search into regions.

Air units followed rivers and roads. Mounted scouts spread toward the nearest settlements. Mages climbed hills to cast divinations from different angles. Adventurers searched for hidden doors, unnatural mana, and any landmark that looked important enough to conceal a dungeon core.

They found a country behaving like a country.

The road below the portal divided after twelve miles. One branch led toward farming towns. Another crossed a river and continued beyond the district. A third turned into high ground where the nearest mountain was still days away for anyone traveling on foot.

Maps existed.

They did not contain the answer.

The first scouts entered an evacuated village and found district maps hanging in the meeting hall. The drawings showed roads, rivers, settlements, district boundaries, public portals, and trade routes. Corathen extended far beyond every edge.

”This is one province.” A cartographer said.

”District.” The local map corrected in smaller letters.

The army copied it anyway.

Other groups encountered residents before the wardens could move everyone.

Some attackers threatened them. Others offered money. Several simply explained the divine quest and asked where the Dungeon Master kept his most valuable possession.

The answers were honest and useless.

Max spent time in the Sanctuary. Max visited Redbrook. Max appeared wherever something unusual happened. Max did not rule from a palace in Corathen, and no mayor knew where he kept the core.

One old farmer pointed down the longest road and told a mounted party that anything important was probably in the capital.

The capital was hundreds of miles away.

The party followed it.

Another resident sent searchers toward an abandoned mine because he disliked the way they spoke to his daughter. A district warden gave three guild scouts precise directions to a fortified tax archive. The scouts reached it, broke through two doors, and found twenty years of grain records.

Corathen’s residents did not need Max to tell them which side they were on.

Local governments closed roads, moved civilians, and removed useful signs. Messengers carried attacker descriptions ahead of the search. When air units approached a town, warning bells sounded before they landed.

Max coordinated only what crossed districts.

He used the dungeon map to track the largest groups. Anna passed information to regional authorities. Local wardens and soldiers concentrated on evacuations and roadblocks instead of trading permanent lives against attackers who would return at midnight. Quin remained near the Level Five entrance, moving against any force strong enough to break through the dungeon defenders and prepared barriers delaying them.

Nobody tried to defend every mile.

There were too many miles.

The country’s size defeated most searchers without a fight.

A group traveling south spent four hours reaching a ridge that had looked close from the portal slope. The river scouts followed the water for nearly a hundred miles and found three cities, nine bridges, and no sign of the core. Flying searchers covered more ground, but every mountain revealed more mountains beyond it.

Divination produced contradictions.

The entire level carried dungeon mana. Every portal, settlement, enchanted road, and created creature gave the spells something to detect. A compass designed to point toward the greatest concentration spun whenever it passed a city. A ritual seeking the ”heart of the dungeon” indicated the capital, the Sanctuary, and a vast forest on three consecutive attempts.

By noon, the invasion had found nothing.

It had also learned what not to search.

Kale’s cartographers combined reports in the camp below the Level Five threshold. They crossed out ordinary mines, known portal hubs, military forts, and every location chosen only because it looked dramatic. The empty portion of the map remained larger than everything they had eliminated.

A high-level diviner arrived from the distant city after midday.

She did not ask where the core was.

She asked where the Dungeon Master had interfered.

Anna marked the woman on the command map as soon as her group entered Corathen. She wore plain traveling clothes beneath a mantle covered in silver writing. Twelve people accompanied her. None joined the searches already underway.

They collected records.

Where had Max summoned rain in Fey Nights? Which roads had he changed in the Dead Lands? Where had Quin appeared? Which internal portal routes had been restricted before the army entered Corathen? What did local emergency plans protect first?

Most of those questions pointed nowhere near the core.

Together, they revealed how Max thought.

”They are mapping us.” Anna said.

Max studied the diviner’s route. ”They’re mapping what we care about.”

”That includes several million people.”

”Good.”

The diviner discarded the cities and the public portal network. She discarded the Sanctuary because hostile entrants could not reach it from their gate. She discarded places Max defended only after attackers approached.

Then she looked for the absence.

There was a broad section of upland where public portal routes curved around empty territory. No major road crossed it. Nearby districts had emergency plans directing residents away from it, even though the maps showed no floodplain, monster territory, or military site requiring the precaution.

The area covered hundreds of square miles.

It was the first useful answer anyone had found.

The diviner’s group did not travel there by road.

They created a chain of spatial jumps. One mage marked the destination. Another carried the group beyond it. Flying mounts covered the gaps where the spells could not reach. They used distant peaks and river bends as anchors, crossing in minutes what ordinary troops would need days to travel.

Max moved.

He did not send an army toward the uplands. That would confirm the conclusion to every searcher watching his defenses. He sent warnings to the surrounding districts and opened a private route for Quin.

Then he entered Corathen alone.

The diviner’s group reached the outer hills in the late afternoon.

They found no fortress. Grass covered the slopes. Small streams crossed valleys without roads. The only structure was an old maintenance station built into a cliff, its stone front weathered enough to look abandoned.

It had never been abandoned.

The station connected to a restricted transit ring used to reach parts of the dungeon that were not open to visitors. It did not lead directly to the core. It shortened the distance to the protected territory around it.

The attackers recognized the portal machinery.

Max destroyed the ring before they could seize it.

Stone arches collapsed across Corathen. Maintenance routes used by dungeon staff went dark. The station filled with broken crystal and dead light.

The damage cost him infrastructure that would be expensive when the challenge ended.

It also forced the expedition back into the hills.

The diviner smiled at the ruin.

”Correct direction.” She said.

Her group continued on foot.

They used the mana released by the broken ring to refine their search. The dungeon’s power flowed outward through thousands of connections, but the collapsed station exposed where one of those connections began. The diviner traced it beneath the hills.

Max stopped hiding his response.

Quin attacked the expedition from the east. Max closed the western valley. Empty fortifications prepared by Corathian engineers blocked the northern pass while the land itself rose across the southern route.

The attackers divided.

Most turned to hold Quin and the dungeon defenses. Four followed the diviner into a narrow cut before Max sealed it. They used a spatial spell at the final moment and disappeared beyond the new wall.

Anna’s map lost them.

”Max.”

”I know.”

He felt the spell end inside the protected territory.

The four attackers appeared in a chamber containing no core. They had followed a maintenance line to its final junction. Three sealed passages left the room. Each carried the same mana signature.

They began opening all three.

Max arrived before the first seal failed.

The expedition had not come close because its members were stronger than him. They had come close because an army spent seven days giving them a road, thousands of scouts gave them information, and one diviner asked the correct question with hours remaining.

Max did not give them another hour.

He broke the spatial anchor first. The attackers lost their retreat and any chance to bring reinforcements through it. Two rushed him. One tried to hold the seal. The diviner began a spell aimed through the wall rather than at Max.

He crossed the chamber before she finished.

The fight was brief. Max didn’t need to fight monsters or practice skills repeatedly to become stronger. He only needs to spend money. And money was something he had quite a bit of. None of these invaders had managed to survive a single strike form him.

Across Corathen, search parties continued moving. The army in the Dead Lands widened its corridor. More attackers entered the Level Five threshold. Kale’s cartographers sent every available flying group toward the uplands after receiving the diviner’s last message.

They did not have time to arrive.

The seventh midnight reached the dungeon without the invaders even catching a glimpse of the invaders.

Max had pulled back the Corathen army that usually tangled with the undead that spilled form the Dead Lands. The army instead protected the capital where the dungeon core was hidden. The enemies had taken advantage of a few hidden passways to get close but ultimately, they weren’t able to close enough distance to even see the capital on the horizon.

Silver light passed through every level at midnight.

Sigmund’s defeated fey returned. Hizon’s goblins and hobgoblins returned. Dwarven and Elven defenders rose throughout Level Three. Kildra and the fallen undead stood again in the Dead Lands. The attackers defeated during the final day restored throughout their held positions, including the four members of the expedition in the damaged junction.

For one instant, both complete forces existed inside the dungeon at once.

Then the challenge ended.

White fire surrounded every registered attacker. Kale disappeared from the Corathian camp. Soldiers vanished from the Dead Lands. Guild parties, scouts, healers, crafters, porters, and every new arrival returned through the divine connection alive.

Their walls remained.

Their empty stores remained. Their maps and memories went with them. The bridges they broke, roads they built, gates they destroyed, and maintenance ring Max sacrificed remained part of his dungeon.

The hostile entrance closed.

Max stood in the damaged junction with Anna’s voice still in his ear and Quin beside the cracked final seal.

For seven days, an entire distant region had thrown real people at everything he built. They had not hated him. Most had never heard his name. Whatever mechanism that opened the entrance had offered them something valuable, and they had learned how to turn a crowd into an army before the offer expired.

They had crossed four levels, broken a fortress, fought through more than one hundred thousand undead, entered a country, and found the first hidden route toward his core.

They had failed.

Not by enough for Max to feel comfortable.

”Core?” Anna asked.

Max checked it even though the system already had. ”Secure.”

Anna released a breath. ”Then come back.”

”I need to inspect the seal.”

”Max.”

He looked at Quin.

Quin pointed toward the private route Anna had opened. ”I have suddenly become interested in inspecting this seal for you.”

Max went home.

Far beyond the dungeon, another notification opened before Kincaid.

[Champion Max: First Challenge Passed.]

[Communication Restriction Lifted.]

Kincaid read both lines and wondered if he should make contact.

”Not yet.” He decided. ”Humans do need sleep after all.”
