Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Corathen army returned north carrying new timber.

Wagons rolled out of the capital for most of the morning. They carried bridge sections, bundles of sharpened stakes, replacement bowstrings, stone-cutting tools, preserved food, and barrels of the resin dwarven engineers used to hold cracked fortifications together until proper repairs became possible.

Orc infantry marched beside human archers. Elven scouts rode ahead of the column. Dwarven engineers checked every wagon whenever the road changed beneath the wheels. Fey soldiers traveled under green and brown cloaks, visible until the eye tried to follow them for too long.

The officer at the head of the convoy was the same dwarf who had passed through Redbrook earlier and met the first wave of adventures who traveled into Corathen.

Commander Torren Flint rode the same enormous horse.

The animal’s name was Barrel, which Torren considered a better description than most names given to warhorses. Barrel carried a dwarf in plate armor, two rolled maps, a signal case, three days of food, and enough tools to shoe himself if the farriers became occupied elsewhere.

The last time Torren led a convoy through Silverton (boarder town near the Dead Lands), damaged equipment filled the rear wagons. This time the wagons traveled north empty enough to bring wounded soldiers back.

He intended to keep most of them empty.

The order to withdraw from the frontier had arrived six days before the hostile army entered Corathen. Every northern commander received the same priority: abandon positions that could not be held with reduced forces, evacuate civilians, and move the strongest available formations toward the capital.

Torren obeyed.

He left warded markers, collapsed minor crossings, and enough scouts to report what followed. The undead did exactly what they had done during every previous weakness in the line.

They advanced.

At first, small groups crossed from the Dead Lands and occupied abandoned farms. Then organized formations followed the old military road. By the time the foreign invaders disappeared, undead patrols had reached the northern face of Three-Marker Ridge, thirty-one miles beyond the position Corathen normally held.

They did not sack towns. The towns were empty.

They did not steal food. They needed none.

They simply occupied ground and remained there.

Torren reached the temporary command camp before sunset. It stood south of Silverton’s northern district line, where three army roads met beside a low stone fort. Signal flags above the wall displayed reports gathered throughout the day.

The left road remained clear to East Ford.

The center road was blocked at Three-Marker Ridge.

The right road had disappeared beneath gray fog that moved against the wind.

Torren dismounted and entered the map room.

His scouts had placed black stones for known undead positions. Too many covered the center. Fewer marked the flanks, but the gaps between them carried white string to show uncertainty.

He did not plan a charge toward the old line.

The army had been absent long enough for every familiar road to become a possible trap. Undead did not sleep while occupying captured ground. They dug beneath walls, filled culverts with corpses, placed archers in farm lofts, and waited in riverbeds where living scouts disliked remaining after dark.

The first day’s objective was East Ford.

Holding it would reopen a supply route and prevent the undead from crossing behind the center column. Dwarven engineers moved before dawn behind portable shields. Elven scouts identified three submerged formations in the river shallows. Human archers marked the buildings where skeletal bowmen waited. Orc infantry formed two heavy lines along the southern bank.

The fey found the spell beneath the bridge.

It had been tied to the central pier with wire made from grave iron. Any living person who crossed above it would awaken the corpses buried in both approaches and collapse the weakened span beneath the resulting fight.

Torren changed the order of work.

The engineers did not touch the bridge. They built a second crossing two hundred yards downstream while the infantry made enough noise at the original ford to hold every hollow gaze in that direction.

The first units crossed on rope and narrow planks. They did not attack the bridge. They occupied the northern bank, secured the approaches to the new crossing, and waited until two full companies stood behind them.

Only then did Torren signal the assault.

The battle lasted less than an hour. Preparations took six.

Archers removed the skeletal bowmen from the farm roofs. Fey soldiers entered the gray edges of the spell and cut the grave-iron lines without waking everything attached to them. Orc infantry met the formations rising from the road, held them away from the damaged bridge, and drove them into ground already marked for artillery.

The buried corpses still rose.

They rose in separate groups instead of together. Dwarven fire pots burned the first. The second found its path blocked by wagons filled with stone. The third emerged behind Torren’s command position and encountered the reserve the dwarf had refused to commit early.

By midday, East Ford belonged to Corathen again.

The engineers removed the spell from the central pier. They could not restore the bridge in one afternoon, but they made the original crossing safe enough for infantry and kept the new one open for wagons.

Torren left two companies there and moved north.

Three-Marker Ridge had been named for standing stones raised before Corathen’s oldest surviving maps. Only two remained upright. The third had fallen years ago and served as a bench for soldiers who appreciated history more when they could sit on it.

The undead occupied all three positions.

They had built no walls. Bones filled the old trenches. Heavy infantry stood where the road narrowed, while cavalry waited behind the crest. A corpse knight in rusted armor commanded from the fallen marker.

Torren observed the ridge through a scout lens.

”It remembers the old fortifications.” He said.

One of his engineers followed the indicated lines. The undead had placed its strongest formations where Corathen’s defenders traditionally stood. The old position protected against an attack from the north.

Torren was approaching from the south.

The same trenches that once slowed undead now gave them covered routes across the ridge. The road exposed anyone advancing toward it. An immediate attack would spend living soldiers to recover dirt before the supply line could support them.

Torren ordered the camp built outside bow range.

The undead remained on the ridge throughout the night. So did Corathen’s watch posts. Healers checked feet, armor straps, and the smaller injuries that became dangerous on a long campaign. Engineers assembled throwing engines behind screens. Scouts traveled the flanks and returned with mud from places the map showed as dry.

No silver light restored anyone at midnight.

That rule had belonged to the seven-day invasion, not the frontier. Every soldier on Torren’s field knew the difference. Orders accounted for it.

At dawn, a human company advanced along the road beneath tower shields. They stopped before the steepest section and began building a barricade.

The corpse knight sent infantry down to destroy it.

The humans withdrew in good order. The barricade remained. Undead formations crowded around it, where the road narrowed between two banks.

Corathen’s throwing engines fired from beyond the ridge’s expected range.

The first stones broke the front formation. The next carried sealed jars that shattered into lines of bright salt and binding ash. Undead could cross either substance. Crossing both while necromantic commands pulled them forward caused their formations to lose the timing that made them dangerous.

The orc infantry entered the gap.

They did not attempt to reach the crest. Their first line advanced far enough to fix the undead in place. Their second widened the fight. When the corpse knight committed cavalry to the western slope, elven riders emerged from a dry streambed the scouts had found during the night.

The cavalry turned to meet them.

That exposed the ridge’s eastern side.

Dwarven engineers had spent the same hours cutting steps into a cliff everyone assumed too steep for troops. They completed the last section beneath concealment spells provided by the fey. A mixed company climbed behind them and reached the standing markers while the main battle still faced south.

The corpse knight abandoned the fallen stone.

Torren’s troops did not chase it beyond the planned line. They captured the crest, turned the old trenches, and allowed the undead commander to withdraw north with whatever formations could follow.

By afternoon, three Corathian flags flew above Three-Marker Ridge.

One stood on each marker, including the fallen one.

The army spent the next two days making the gain useful.

Road crews cleared wreckage. Ward teams found six necromantic anchors beneath the trenches and another inside a soldier’s well. The water had to be drained, purified, and tested before anyone drank from it. Burial details separated Corathian dead from remains used by the undead. Healers treated soldiers who had never reached the center of the battle but inhaled gray dust carried from it.

The rear wagons did not remain empty.

They remained less full than Torren had feared.

The advance continued along three routes.

Small forts returned to the map one at a time. Some required fighting. Others held only undead observers that withdrew when the army approached in strength. Every recovered position received a signal station, a supply count, and a retreat route before the next movement began.

The right road took longest.

The gray fog concealed a procession moving south beneath it. Fey scouts learned the fog reacted to fear and thickened around anyone entering alone. Torren sent complete squads connected by ropes, bells, and shouted songs too vulgar for fear to occupy the entire mind. Dwarven fans mounted on wagon wheels broke the first layer. Elemental mages changed the wind inside the second.

The soldiers found hundreds of undead moving around a wagon carrying a black stone.

Destroying the stone collapsed the fog.

The procession became an ordinary formation under clear daylight. Corathian archers and mages reduced it before the infantry closed.

At the end of the fourth day, Torren reached the old frontier.

The northern line did not consist of one wall. It followed hills, rivers, fortified roads, and watch stations overlooking the routes from the Dead Lands. At its center stood a broad gate built around the place where hostile territory most often opened into Corathen.

The foreign invasion had passed through there under challenge rules. Its abandoned camp still covered the southern slope.

Empty tents stood beside earthworks large enough to protect thousands. Fire pits held cold ash. Broken wagons remained where the challenge removed the people who owned them. Notes in unfamiliar handwriting marked supply counts that no longer mattered.

The invaders had left behind a useful outer ditch, three unstable towers, and a wall positioned badly against the direction undead normally attacked.

Torren ordered the towers dismantled.

The ditch could remain after engineers changed its approaches. The wall would be cut into separate barriers and joined to the older fortifications. Anything unsafe became material for something that was not.

Beyond the gate, gray land extended beneath a dark sky.

Undead formations moved in the distance. They had withdrawn when Corathen’s army reached the line, not vanished. Patrols would test the restored defenses before the repairs finished. Larger forces would return after that.

Torren rode Barrel along the central wall.

Soldiers raised signal poles. Engineers argued over stone. Healers converted an abandoned challenge tent into a field station. Cooks used another to protect the evening meal from dust.

The line looked occupied again.

That was not the same as secure.

Torren sent his report south through the military network.

[East Ford reopened. Three-Marker Ridge reclaimed. Central frontier position reoccupied. Civilian return not yet authorized. Fortification repair ongoing. Undead forces remain active beyond the line.]

He attached casualty numbers, supply estimates, and the routes requiring another week of patrols.

Then he removed his helmet and sat on the fallen portion of a wall while Barrel ate from a feed bag beside him.

Gray dust had already settled across his boots.

North of the fortifications, the first undead patrol changed direction and began moving toward Corathen.

The watch bell rang.

Torren stood and put his helmet back on.

The army was back where it belonged.
