Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Kincaid’s request arrived while Max and Anna were eating dinner.

[Patron Kincaid requests a conversation at your convenience.]

[Declared purpose: Answer questions concerning champion selection and establish future advisory arrangements.]

[Requested access: Voice and visual communication only.]

Sovereign Consent placed the request above the table without allowing anything through it. Max could see who wanted access, what kind of access Kincaid requested, and why he claimed to want it. The quiet certainty of that still felt new.

Max glanced at Anna. ”After dinner?”

”After dessert.” She answered.

He sent Kincaid a time.

They finished the meal without hurrying. That was not a performance intended to make a god wait. Max had spent most of the day reviewing reopened contracts and approving alternate routes around damage left by the challenge. Anna had spent hers working through reports from Corathen’s districts. Neither wanted divine business to claim the only quiet hour they had shared since morning.

When the agreed time arrived, they moved to Max’s office. He accepted the request exactly as written.

An image of Kincaid sitting behind a desk appeared before Anna and Max.

The minor god had abandoned the clothes he wore when trying to look impressive. His current shirt and trousers would not have attracted attention in the Sanctuary, although Max doubted any tailor there could reproduce the faint gold moving through the fabric when Kincaid shifted.

”Thank you for accepting.” Kincaid said.

”You said you wanted to discuss why you chose me.”

”I owe you a better explanation than the one I gave when you arrived. I thought it might also help us decide what useful advice from me should look like.”

Max settled behind the desk. Anna sat beside him.

The debt between them had been settled. Max did not trust Kincaid simply because the system said nothing remained owed, but he no longer had a reason to treat every sentence as part of the same dispute. What mattered now was what Kincaid chose to do when he could not hide behind an unpaid promise.

”Let’s start with the selection.” Max suggested.

Kincaid rested both hands on his knees.

”The Elder God gave each apprentice a dungeon core and permission to choose a champion for Prime. Most of the others searched Prime itself. They looked for kings, conquerors, master builders, legendary adventurers, or people already connected to dungeons. I looked farther.”

”Because the rule named the destination rather than the soul’s origin.” Anna said.

”Yes. I saw room in the instruction and used it. At the time, I was proud of noticing something the others missed. I am still pleased that I noticed. I am less proud of what I did once I found Max.”

Kincaid opened a record between them. It resembled the one Max had seen on the day he arrived in Prime, but the information no longer occupied a window controlled only by Kincaid. Sovereign Consent identified it as a shared copy and waited for Max’s permission before placing it above the desk.

Max accepted.

[Soul record at time of selection.]

[Positive Karma: 341,931.]

[Karma Grade: S(-).]

[Attached system authority: Unique.]

The numbers had once seemed like the strangest part of his death.

”Your Karma System drew my attention first.” Kincaid said. ”Nothing else in your universe carried the same authority. It was not merely powerful for a mortal system. Its complete structure represented enough power to alter an entire universe. I had never seen anything like it attached to one soul.”

”You saw an advantage.” Max said.

Kincaid did not soften the answer. ”An enormous one. I wanted to win the competition. I wanted my master to recognize that I had found the champion everyone else overlooked. Your system made that possible.”

Anna looked at the Karma total. ”The system got your attention. Did the record decide it?”

”It gave me a reason to believe Max could be trusted with what I had found. Power alone was not enough. Several apprentices chose champions because they were powerful, and many of those seats are empty now.”

Kincaid enlarged the record without exposing any new detail.

”The grade was not a measurement of obedience or purity. It did not mean Max had never harmed anyone or made a selfish decision. Karma records long patterns. By the end of his life, he had accumulated more positive Karma than almost any unascended human soul I had examined. He repeatedly left people, places, and systems better than he found them even when no reward depended on it.”

Max leaned back. ”I don’t remember doing anything worth three hundred thousand points.”

”Most people who accumulate that much do not. One action rarely creates such a record. Consequences continue. Help given to one person changes what that person later does for others. Work that improves a community affects people the original actor never meets. Your life contained many ordinary choices with unusually long effects.”

That answer sounded more plausible to Max than a forgotten heroic deed. It was also impossible to verify. The record belonged to a life that now seemed both his and very far away.

”You expected the pattern to continue?” He asked.

”I hoped it would. I also believed your foreign experience would make you less willing to accept Prime’s assumptions about what a dungeon had to be. I did not predict the Sanctuary. I certainly did not predict Corathen. I expected something defensible, profitable, and unconventional.”

”How unconventional?” Anna asked.

Kincaid smiled slightly. ”I imagined better traps. Perhaps a dungeon that traded with visitors instead of killing all of them. I believed Max might build alliances with local people. My boldest private expectation was a fortress with a town attached.”

Max looked toward the map of Level Five occupying one wall.

Kincaid followed his attention. ”I was not thinking too small by ordinary standards.”

”Ordinary standards have had a difficult six months.” Anna joked.

The remark held warmth rather than criticism. Max reached beneath the desk and took her hand.

”What did you know about the dungeon core?” He asked.

”Only what every apprentice received. It would bind to a compatible soul, create a dungeon in Prime, and provide access to the competition’s basic rules. We were not told what the Elder God ultimately wanted from the surviving champions. I knew communication would be forbidden until the first challenge ended. I knew I might be unable to correct a poor choice once the core was placed.”

”And you changed my system anyway.”

Kincaid was silent for a moment.

”Yes. I convinced myself the alteration was necessary because the complete Karma System could not pass into Prime without attracting powers neither of us could control. Some reduction was necessary. The part that was not necessary was deciding alone how the remaining authority should be arranged. I wanted to give you what I believed was the strongest possible advantage before I lost contact. I treated the urgency as permission. It was not.”

Max had heard versions of the admission before. This one did not arrive beside an excuse or an offer intended to end the argument quickly.

”Sovereign Consent prevents a repeat.” Max said. ”The debt is paid. I wanted to understand the choice, not reopen the settlement.”

Kincaid’s shoulders loosened by a degree. ”Then I will leave it settled.”

The answer mattered. Max had no interest in spending every future conversation forcing Kincaid to apologize for the same decision. Regret could influence what the god did next without becoming the only subject they shared.

Anna closed the old soul record. ”What can you actually advise him about?”

Kincaid produced a second list. This one was much shorter than the repayment catalog.

”Divine authority, patron rules, common dungeon structures outside the narrow traditions Max has encountered, and anything I personally know about Prime. I can help interpret notices connected to the competition. I can evaluate a proposed use of patron assistance before you accept it. I can also research ordinary information, but if I obtain it through divine means unavailable to Max, the competition may count that as me contributing towards the dungeon and not advising.”

”So don’t search for our enemies from your room.” Max said.

”I will not. Advice costs nothing. Divinely acquired intelligence may not. Any assistance with a measured cost will show that cost before you accept it.”

Max opened the advisory controls within his champion interface.

”I don’t want you making decisions for the dungeon. I do want information when you know that I am working from a false assumption.”

”Even if correcting it is unpleasant?”

”Especially then. Explain the evidence. Let me decide what to do with it.”

Kincaid nodded. ”Agreed.”

They established a regular meeting every two weeks. Either side could request another conversation if something important occurred. The schedule created no automatic access; Kincaid still had to declare his requested scope, and Max or Anna still had to accept it.

Kincaid would send written summaries when a new competition rule appeared. He would distinguish what the Elder God had stated from what Kincaid inferred. If he did not know an answer, he would say so rather than filling the space with confidence.

Max added one condition of his own.

”If one of the other apprentices contacts you about me, can you tell me what you are permitted to share and what they asked for?”

”I cannot promise to reveal protected information from another patron.”

”I’m asking for notice, not their secrets.”

”Then yes. I will tell you that contact occurred and provide whatever the rules allow. In this competition, even if you don’t like it, you are my champion. My success is directly tied to you succeeding.”

No argument followed. They were not negotiating repayment under the threat of divine loopholes. They were deciding whether two people with different knowledge could work together without one claiming ownership of the other.

Kincaid looked again at the Corathen map.

”May I ask you something?”

”Go ahead.”

”When did you stop thinking of the dungeon as a dungeon?”

Max considered the question.

”I never did. A dungeon is a place people enter. What happens after that depends on what I build, and I never saw a rule saying it had to become less of one when people decided to live there.”

”Even after you created a country?”

”Especially then. Corathen changed what the dungeon could contain. It did not need a different name to do it.”

Kincaid smiled. ”You realize most Dungeon Masters would find that answer absurd.” The minor god stared at him for several seconds, then laughed. It was not the polished laugh of a god pleased with his own cleverness. He looked genuinely surprised.

”That,” Kincaid said, ”is a much better answer than the fortress I imagined.”

The scheduled hour was nearly over. Max had received the answers he asked for. They were not proof that Kincaid would always respect the arrangement, but future trust could only be built from future choices.

”Anything else from the meeting with the Elder God?” Max asked.

”Nothing I withheld. The competition has no active countdown. Patron contributions are being recorded. The surviving apprentices know one champion came from outside Prime, but they were not given your name or the location of your dungeon.”

”Do you expect them to look?”

”Some will. They cannot interfere directly with another champion. Curiosity does not require interference.”

Max added that to the growing list of problems that did not yet require action.

Kincaid stood. ”For what it is worth, Max, I chose you because I saw power, evidence of character, and an opportunity no one else had noticed. The order matters less than I once pretended. I saw the power first.”

Honesty did not make the choice noble. It made the answer usable.

”Thank you for telling me.” Max said.

Kincaid inclined his head to both of them. ”I will send the written advisory terms tonight.”

Max ended the connection.

Sovereign Consent recorded the conclusion of the authorized access and closed it without incident.

Anna remained beside him. ”Was that what you needed?” She asked.

”It was part of it.”

She squeezed his hand. ”Then the next part can be what he does after giving the answer.”

Max agreed.

On the wall, Corathen’s roads continued beyond the edge of the office map. Messages waited from the Academy, the city councils, and three dungeon managers who had all marked their requests urgent. Max opened the first one.
