Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The baker’s name was Dellin.

He entered Corathen because flour in the Sanctuary had become expensive.

That explanation disappointed three adventurers who had followed him through the portal expecting the first visitor to possess a mysterious quest or secret class. Dellin ignored them. He knelt beside the road, rubbed the dark soil between his fingers, and then walked toward the village bakery with his notebook open.

Max watched from beside the arrival gate.

He had placed the pale stone arch in the field beyond the southern fence rather than inside the church. Golden Axe had awakened in the church because the Final Trial ended in resurrection. Ordinary visitors did not need to crowd through a place of worship every time they entered or left Level Five.

The open field also gave them room to stop and reconsider the entry warnings before confirming their decision.

The gnomes managing the Sanctuary side controlled the flow through the portal. They separated wagons from people on foot, prevented two carts from entering at the same time, and directed animals toward the marked lane. They did not register anyone. The dungeon core already knew every person inside Max’s territory.

Anna stood beside Max beneath a canvas shade and checked the number of arrivals on her clipboard.

”One hundred and seventy-three in the first hour.”

”Fewer than I expected.”

”Most of the Sanctuary is still inside the Map Room.”

That would change once the merchants finished planning their routes.

The first arrivals were evenly divided between adventurers and everyone else. Dwarven metalworkers brought sample cases. Human merchants pushed handcarts loaded with cloth, tools, and preserved food. Two healers entered carrying enough supplies to open a small clinic. Families remained close to the portal while their children stared at fields that continued farther than the Sanctuary walls ever could.

Every person accepted the same warnings before entering.

One father reached the final confirmation, looked at the three children sitting in his wagon, and returned to the Sanctuary. He came back an hour later with two more adults, additional supplies, and enough dungeon currency to pay for lodging if the village filled.

Max considered that a better response than pretending the warning did not apply to families.

Five young adventurers made the opposite decision. Their armor looked new, their healer’s sash had not collected a single stain, and none appeared above level ten. They crossed the arrival field, glanced toward the village, and began planning a morning trip into the southern woods without seeking a local guide.

”Should we stop them?” Anna asked.

Max looked at the accepted warning still recorded beside each of their names.

”No. They are allowed to make bad decisions.”

He did, however, remember the party.

Most newcomers showed more patience. They purchased local maps, asked about road conditions, and remained near the village while deciding what to do. Nearly every conversation eventually turned toward the capital.

It was the largest human-founded city in Corathen. Humans still formed most of its population, but dwarves occupied an industrial district large enough to be a city by itself. Elven gardens covered several neighborhoods. Orc communities surrounded two military grounds, and fey markets appeared according to schedules no human calendar tracked correctly.

To people from the Prime Universe, it sounded like the safest place to begin.

It was also several weeks away by wagon.

Before noon, the mayor arrived with six guards and two clerks. He was a narrow man with gray hair and a silver badge over a practical brown coat. He bowed to Max before studying the growing crowd.

”Dungeon Master. How many people should the village expect?”

”Eventually? More than your village can hold.”

The mayor accepted the answer without panic. ”Today?”

Anna checked her clipboard. ”Fewer than a thousand unless the rate changes.”

”Then they cannot all sleep beneath roofs.”

”They were warned.” Max said.

The mayor looked toward the village. Residents had already begun unfolding tables beside the southern road. Someone sold cups of water. A farmer stood on a wagon and offered space in his barn for a price that increased every time another group approached.

”We will mark a camping field.” The mayor decided. ”Fires inside stone rings. Waste pits beyond the east hedge. No cutting orchard wood, and nobody blocks the road.”

He sent one clerk to speak with nearby farmers and the other to find every resident willing to sell food, water, hay, or lodging.

The campsite existed before sunset without Max opening the dungeon menu.

New arrivals gathered loose stones from the edge of plowed fields and arranged their own fire rings. Carpenters built simple outdoor toilets from lumber purchased in the village. A water mage filled barrels after receiving permission from the mayor, while two laborers dug drainage channels around the lowest part of the field. groups pooled dungeon coins to rent covered spaces. Those who could not afford them used the open ground at no charge.

The villagers did not wait for Max to solve the sudden demand. They sold what they possessed, hired help where they needed it, and argued over prices until the mayor threatened to post every complaint beside the offending stall.

One Sanctuary merchant attempted to claim the best roadside space by driving a painted stake into the ground. He had not spoken to the landowner or the mayor. He simply announced that the first person to mark a place should control it.

The mayor ordered a guard to pull out the stake.

The merchant looked toward Max. He approached only after a gnome confirmed Max was willing to hear him, then stopped several steps away and bowed.

”Dungeon Master, I paid to bring this stock through Crag Mountain and brought enough to serve hundreds of visitors. The mayor is preventing me from opening my business.”

”Did you rent the land?” Max asked.

”No, but nobody was using it.”

”It belongs to the farmer whose field begins behind that fence.”

The merchant glanced toward the farmer watching from his wagon.

”Then I will pay him.”

”If he agrees.”

”And if he does not?”

Max looked toward the removed stake. ”Then the mayor has already answered you.”

The merchant bowed again and went to negotiate with the farmer.

The mayor returned to directing wagons away from the camping field.

Anna watched a farmer lease the same unused shed to three craftsmen working at different times of day.

”You could have built another inn before lunch.” She said.

”I could have.”

”You did not.”

”Corathen already has stone, timber, labor, and people who know how to use them.” Max gestured toward the campsite. ”If I fix every inconvenience with DP, none of this matters.”

The first caravan began forming near the well.

Three merchants wanted to travel north, but none intended to go directly to the capital. Their first destination was Redbrook, a walled market town two days away by local wagon. There they could purchase sturdier carts, hire drivers familiar with the royal roads, and learn which routes remained safe.

Adventurers offered to serve as guards. The merchants compared their equipment, previous clears, and the recommendations attached to their Sanctuary guild records. Parties that had completed the first three levels received better offers, but no one confused combat experience with ownership of the caravan.

Golden Axe came down from the inn shortly before sunset.

Matthew listened while the caravan organizer explained the route. He asked about expected threats, bridge conditions, and where the wagons would camp. Then he agreed that his party would travel with them as far as Redbrook. The merchants were pleased that their caravan had hired the only group that had completed all 4 levels.

The organizer remained in command of the wagons. Matthew would advise her about defense once they left the village.

No one found that arrangement strange.

As evening approached, smoke rose from dozens of new fire rings. Villagers carried pots of stew toward paying customers. Craftsmen repaired three damaged carts while waiting for their own wagons to clear the portal. Children from both worlds watched one another across the fence until someone produced a ball.

Dellin returned from the bakery carrying two sealed jars of starter and six pages of notes.

”Their wheat absorbs more water.” He announced to anyone who asked. ”And they use a sour starter I have never seen.”

An adventurer stared at him. ”You crossed into an unknown country for bread?”

”I crossed for profit. Bread is how I intend to earn it.”

Max stood with Anna near the arrival gate as the light faded.

The village had gained a market, a campground, three proposed caravans, and more work than its residents could complete in a week. Max had not created a quest window for any of it. He had opened a door, and people on both sides had responded.

Corathen was already changing.

Max and Anna returned to the Sanctuary after dinner. Quin met them in Max’s office with the final Map Room count. More than four thousand people had entered the building, although fewer than five hundred had traveled through the Level Five gate.

”That will be higher tomorrow.” Quin said.

Max started to answer.

A system window appeared in front of him.

It did not resemble a dungeon notification. The border was colorless, and the words remained even when he tried to dismiss them.

[Champion Establishment Period Remaining: 30 Days.]

[First Challenge will commence upon conclusion of the Establishment Period.]

Anna lowered her clipboard. ”What happened?”

Max read the message aloud.

Quin moved closer. ”What establishment period?”

”DC?” Max asked.

[No relevant information is available.]

”Did this come from you?”

[No.]

Max looked again at the word Champion.

He had opened a country that morning. By nightfall, something he had never heard of was counting down toward a challenge he did not remember accepting.

”What first challenge?”
