Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Kincaid reached toward something outside the communication window, then stopped.

”Your original system record is still sealed beneath the dungeon interface.” He said. ”I can request its release. I cannot open it without your permission now that the patron restrictions are gone.”

”Request it.”

A new notice appeared.

[Patron Kincaid requests permission to release archived pre-deployment system records.]

[This action will reveal information only. It will not alter Champion Max, the dungeon core, or any connected person.]

[Approve?]

Max read every line before accepting.

The Karma System appeared for the first time since his death.

The window was smaller than he remembered. Its border was plain, its text without the detailed menus he now used every day. Seeing it still brought back the shabby apartment where he had waited alone for his heart to stop.

[Max Clarkson]

[Final Positive Karma: 341,931.]

[Tier: S(-)]

[Reincarnation reward prepared.]

The promised life followed.

Successful businessman. Billionaire by twenty-three. A loving wife. Healthy children. A long life ending beside the family he never possessed during his first one.

Max read the entire record.

Anna stood beside him while he did. She had known about his first life and the Karma System’s promise. He had told her long before their wedding. Reading the exact words was different from hearing him summarize them beside a quiet lake.

The next section carried a second heading.

[Reincarnation interrupted prior to soul cleansing.]

[System authority redirected into Champion Core configuration.]

[Modifications performed by Patron Kincaid.]

The allocations filled several pages.

Kincaid had preserved part of the promised wealth by converting it into the enormous DP balance Max possessed when he awakened. He had spent other portions unlocking restrictions on the dungeon core, opening the complete market, strengthening Max’s body, reinforcing his mana pathways, expanding his mana core, improving his mind, and granting the background knowledge needed to survive in the Prime Universe.

Another allocation unlocked every class option.

Another improved the dungeon core itself.

Max reached the sections concerning his promised wife and stopped.

Anna read over his shoulder.

Kincaid cleared his throat.

”I was attempting to preserve the important parts of your reward.”

”You allocated more to my future wife than you did to wealth.” Max said.

”Correct priorities are important.”

Max looked at him.

”Poor time for humor.” Kincaid admitted.

Anna selected the allocation details before Max could move past them. The record described a stored blessing attached to Max’s future marriage. It favored compatibility, health, attraction, and the physical benefits Kincaid had considered important while working alone in the void.

Some descriptions were more detailed than necessary.

Anna read them without changing expression.

”You spent power enhancing the appearance of a woman you had not met.” She said.

”Technically, I enhanced the blessing that would pass to the woman Max chose to marry. I had not selected you. I could not force anyone to love him, marry him, or remain with him. The blessing could not activate until both people willingly created the bond.”

”Did it change my thoughts?”

Kincaid answered immediately. ”No. I would not do that, and the Karma System could not have done it with the authority available. Your feelings and choices are your own.”

Anna looked toward Max.

He knew what she was asking without words.

”I never thought otherwise.” He said.

She took his hand.

That did not remove Kincaid’s responsibility.

”You still decided what benefits would follow that bond without asking either of us.” Max said.

”Yes.”

Kincaid was learning that answers became shorter whenever an explanation would sound like an excuse.

Max continued through the record.

The strangest allocation concerned the Karma System itself. In Max’s original universe, it had been unique. The entire system framework of that universe focused on a single soul rather than dividing its authority among billions of people. Kincaid had recognized how much power remained behind the simple reincarnation rewards and converted nearly all of it into permanent advantages.

The modifications explained things Max had accepted because he lacked another comparison.

The complete market had never been normal.

Neither had a core with every restriction removed, access to every class, a body capable of surviving its first changes, or enough starting DP to build at the scale he chose.

Kincaid had not given those advantages from his own power.

He had taken apart Max’s promised future and rebuilt its energy into them.

”Are these all the changes?” Max asked.

”Yes.”

”Not all the changes you consider important. All of them.”

Kincaid moved one hand across his side of the connection. A verification request appeared instead of another reassurance.

[Patron modification audit available.]

[Compare current champion, core, and marriage-bond configuration against archived pre-deployment modifications?]

Max approved it.

The dungeon interface processed each allocation. No additional modifications appeared. There were no commands requiring loyalty to Kincaid, no hidden communication channel, no dormant condition capable of taking control of Max, and no alteration to Anna’s thoughts or emotions.

The marriage blessing had activated only after both of them willingly completed the Sanctuary wedding bond. Its remaining energy reinforced health, compatibility, and physical traits already present. Anna could disable any continuing effect through her own interface.

She opened the setting, read it, and left it active.

”My choice.” she said.

”Yes.” Kincaid answered.

Max checked the audit twice.

”Did you change my soul?”

”No. I redirected the system authority attached to it and used the core to construct your current body. Your memories, identity, and ability to choose were not rewritten.”

”You attached me to the core.”

”The Elder God’s champion process created the binding after I selected you. I prepared the core and placed your soul inside it. I could not complete the final binding myself.”

That divided responsibility without removing Kincaid’s part in it.

Near the bottom of the record was a separate entry.

[System authority consumed during unauthorized modification process: 2%.]

[Patron compensation vow recorded.]

Max selected it.

Kincaid’s voice emerged from the old record.

”While I shouldn’t take and use what’s yours, I vow that I, Kincaid, will one day make it up to you.”

The office remained quiet after the recording ended.

”You knew it was wrong while you were doing it,” Max said.

Kincaid leaned back. ”I knew using part of your power to perform the changes created a debt. At the time, I told myself the rest was opportunity. You were dead. Your soul was waiting. The Elder God had offered us a competition unlike anything we had ever been allowed to enter. I saw a system with enough power to create an advantage no other apprentice had considered.”

”And you wanted to win.”

”Yes.”

The honesty did not excuse him. It did give Max something solid to judge.

”Would I have entered reincarnation if you left me alone?”

”Yes.”

”Would I have received the life the Karma System promised?”

”As closely as any reincarnation promise can be fulfilled. Systems guide probability and circumstance. They do not control every choice made by every person around you. But yes, that life was waiting.”

Max looked again at the words describing children and an old age he would no longer have in that world.

He could not measure that life against the one he had now.

Anna was real. So were Quin, Mira, Garrick, Hizon, the gnomes, and every person who had built a home inside the Sanctuary. Corathen contained millions. None would exist in the same way if Max had awakened somewhere else as a wealthy child with no memory of dying.

He did not wish them away.

That did not turn Kincaid’s choice into consent.

”I am not going to thank you for taking it.” Max said.

”I did not expect you to.”

”You sounded like you did when the call began.”

Kincaid glanced toward the wine again. ”I had imagined this conversation differently.”

”In your version, did I call you brilliant?”

”Eventually.”

”Adjust your expectations.”

Kincaid laughed once. It was quieter than the large laugh his earlier jokes seemed to promise.

Max closed the archived record but did not reseal it. The Karma System remained available beneath his dungeon history. He could return to it whenever he chose.

”Why me?” Max asked. ”Was it only because my system held more power than the others?”

”That was why I noticed you,” Kincaid answered. ”It was not the only reason I chose you. Your Karma System showed how you earned that power. You spent years helping people when you believed every sacrifice would benefit someone you would never meet in your next life. You gave away what remained after your death. I knew you could build. I hoped the record meant you could hold power without becoming a monster.”

”You did not know.”

”No. I gambled.”

Max appreciated that answer more than a claim that Kincaid had foreseen the Sanctuary, Corathen, or the way Max would respond to an invading army.

Kincaid had chosen an advantage and hoped the person attached to it would be worthy.

”Now that the restriction is gone, what can you do?” Anna asked.

”Communicate. Offer information. Use my own resources to assist my champion within whatever limits the Elder God places on the next stage. I can also settle the debt recorded in the Karma System.”

”How?” Max asked.

”A divine boon carrying power equivalent to what the modification consumed. The exact form would be your choice.”

”Not today.”

Kincaid blinked. ”You do not want to know the options?”

”I want every rule governing them before I choose anything. You have already demonstrated what happens when you make improvements first and explain them later.”

”Fair.”

Max placed both hands on his desk.

”There will be conditions if this patron arrangement continues. You do not alter me, Anna, the core, the dungeon, or anyone connected to it without clear permission. You do not hide information because you think I will dislike it. Advice remains advice. You do not issue orders to my staff or the people living in my dungeon.”

”Agreed.”

”You agreed quickly.”

”They are reasonable conditions. I may be flexible with rules, but I understand ownership. This is your dungeon.”

”It is also their home.” Max said, indicating Anna and Quin before gesturing toward everything beyond the office. ”Remember both parts.”

Kincaid nodded.

A final notice appeared.

[Patron relationship acknowledged.]

[Communication permissions may be managed through the dungeon interface.]

[Observation permission: unrestricted.]

Max changed the last setting.

[Observation permission: by invitation.]

Kincaid sat forward. ”You turned off my viewing access.”

”Correct.”

”I have been watching for six months.”

”Without my knowledge.”

Kincaid opened his mouth, reconsidered, and closed it.

Max set communication requests to require acceptance unless the dungeon faced an immediate patron-level threat. The system defined that narrowly enough that Kincaid could not classify boredom as an emergency.

”We will speak again.” Max said. ”After I deal with the people who defended the dungeon you placed me inside.”

Kincaid lifted his glass but did not return to his earlier grin.

”Understood, Max.”

It was the first time he used Max’s name.

The communication window closed.
