Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Tomas Newl heard the word graveyard in a crowded dining room and missed the rest of the sentence.

He had been listening for it for nineteen days. It had almost been three weeks since he had set out, searching for a unique dungeon under the orders of his supperiors.

The dining room occupied the second floor of a trade house beside one of the region’s busiest portal yards. Merchants ate beneath route boards while clerks announced delayed caravans from the stairs. Tomas had chosen a table near the center because travelers spoke more freely when no stranger appeared to be sitting alone to hear them.

Three tables away, an adventurer held up an empty coin pouch.

”Redbrook graveyard took the rest.” The man said. ”Next time I will accept the hospital and wait.”

His companions laughed in the tired manner of people who had already heard the story.

Tomas set down his spoon.

Kale’s instructions named several separate things the scouts were supposed to find. A forest filled with fey. Orc-controlled highlands. A dwarven airship. A fortress opening into undead territory. A country inside a dungeon.

Only one instruction mentioned graveyards where adventurers returned from death.

Tomas waited until the group finished eating. Approaching too quickly would turn a useful question into an interrogation. When the adventurer stood to leave, Tomas intercepted him near the route board and displayed a university travel seal.

”I am collecting reports about unusual dungeon resurrection.” He said. ”Would you be willing to describe Redbrook?”

The man looked at the seal, then at Tomas.

”The town or the graveyard?”

”Both. I will pay for your time.”

They returned to the table.

The adventurer’s name was Perren. He belonged to a five-person party that had entered Corathen through the dungeon at Crag Mountain. The country lay on the dungeon’s fifth level. Perren registered Redbrook’s churchyard as his resurrection location, died while escorting a survey caravan north, and woke inside that churchyard after the local fee left his account.

”You returned immediately?” Tomas asked.

”It felt immediate. The others said less than a minute passed.”

”At midnight?”

Perren frowned. ”Just after noon. Why would midnight matter?”

Tomas marked the answer exactly.

The graveyard system did not match the seven-day restoration. It used selected sites, required dungeon coins, and operated after deaths at other times. Perren knew there was a recharge period because his status displayed one. He did not know whether someone who died again before it ended would return.

That was more information than the Corathian residents had given the invasion.

It was still incomplete.

”Where is Corathen?” Tomas asked.

Perren pointed toward the west side of the route board, where roads and portal connections continued through four different political borders.

”Inside Max Clarkson’s dungeon. The surface gate is at Crag Mountain. You enter through the mountain stables and take a portal to the Sanctuary. Corathen has its own public gate from there.”

Tomas wrote the name slowly.

Max Clarkson.

The army had crossed five levels and spent a day searching for the Dungeon Master’s core without learning what local merchants treated as ordinary information.

”What are the other levels called?”

Perren counted on his fingers.

”Fey Nights. Orc Highlands. Level Three depends on the path. Most people call the choices Dwarven Airship and Elven Road, though the airship has several sections. Then Dread Fort. Corathen is Level Five.”

Every name matched.

Tomas kept his expression neutral. ”What is the Sanctuary?”

Perren spent the next half hour making the answer larger.

It was a safe zone inside the dungeon. It contained inns, taverns, shops, an arena, stables, training grounds, a Mage Academy annex, public portals, and enough permanent residents that Perren called it a town before changing his mind and calling it a city. Weapons could not be used against other people outside approved areas. Visitors who died on the normal dungeon levels revived in its hospital.

Class trainers operated there.

That part of the story required Tomas to ask twice, not because Perren was unclear, but because the claim sounded more valuable than half the dungeons on the search list.

”They can teach any class?”

”The basic trainers are easy to find. Advanced trainers are scattered around the Sanctuary and some of the other levels. They do not hand you mastery, but they can show you how to begin unlocking skills and abilities. My shield trainer knew six techniques my guild instructor had only heard named.”

”Does everyone know they exist?”

”Everyone near Crag Mountain. People travel there for the trainers without attempting a level.”

The information was not a secret extracted from the dungeon. It appeared in merchant advertisements, Academy correspondence, and guild recruitment notices. Tomas had simply searched too far away to encounter it until now.

He paid Perren, obtained permission to copy the man’s Redbrook registration record, and asked where he could verify the route.

Perren directed him downstairs.

The trade house maintained a Crag Mountain packet for merchants. It listed stable dimensions, wagon fees, prohibited cargo, Sanctuary exchange rates, inn prices, and the schedule used by caravans traveling from the nearest major road. A separate warning told armed guards that Sanctuary protections prevented combat outside the Arena.

The packet named the dungeon’s owner on its first page.

[Dungeon Master: Max Clarkson.]

[Public entrance: Base of Crag Mountain.]

[Arrival route: Surface stables to Sanctuary portal.]

[Normal visitors are subject to dungeon registration and local rules.]

Tomas purchased the packet and every attached level guide.

The public documents also explained why the challenge entrance had revealed none of this. Normal visitors arrived at the surface stables, registered with gnome attendants, and crossed directly into the Sanctuary. From there they selected public destinations and entered dungeon content under ordinary visitor rules. The army’s gate had connected to the defensive beginning of Fey Nights instead. It had never passed through the mountain, the stables, or the safe zone.

That separation was not hidden once Tomas knew which questions to ask. Merchants appreciated a route that allowed wagons to reach rooms without crossing a combat level. Academy notices told students to arrive through the Sanctuary portal. None mentioned the hostile path because ordinary travelers had no reason to know it existed.

The army had not overlooked a sign placed in front of it. The seven-day quest had placed the army on a different side of the dungeon.

The Fey Nights summary included redcaps, dryads, fey hounds, changing paths, and a final confrontation beneath permanent moonlight. The Orc Highlands guide warned parties that Orcs and strong monsters guarded the level. Level Three offered dwarven and elven routes. Dread Fort’s public record described Kildra and the fortress without mentioning what lay beyond it.

He also found notice of a specific defense dungeon that allowed larger groups to fight waves of goblins.

The Corathen guide was thicker than the first four combined.

Its opening map showed a southern village, Redbrook far to the north, public portals, airship routes, and roads that continued off the page. The country operated as a persistent territory rather than a renewable private instance. Local residents could die permanently. Registered adventurers received resurrection protections governed by rules and costs different from those used elsewhere in the dungeon.

Tomas did not need to infer the match.

He needed to report it before someone else did.

The trade house rented secure message rooms by the quarter hour. Tomas locked the door, activated the cipher plate issued by the city archive, and placed his evidence beneath it one page at a time.

[Probable target identified.]

[Location: Public dungeon entrance at Crag Mountain.]

[Dungeon Master: Max Clarkson.]

[Confirmed matching sequence: Fey Nights; Orc Highlands; Dwarven Airship or Elven Road; Dread Fort; Corathen.]

[Independent confirmation: Corathen contains local graveyard resurrection for registered adventurers. Rules differ from challenge restoration.]

[Sanctuary reported as noncombat public safe zone containing lodging, commerce, training facilities, class trainers, Arena, hospital, and portals.]

[Evidence attached: Merchant route packet, level guides, witness account, copied Redbrook registration.]

[I have not approached or entered the dungeon. Requesting instructions regarding formal contact.]

He sent the message.

The cipher plate confirmed receipt by the distant archive. A reply could take hours if the portal relay remained busy. Tomas used the time to verify the physical route.

Crag Mountain did not stand nearby.

Two public portals could remove most of the distance, but neither accepted unregistered military groups. From the second portal city, travelers followed a royal road for four days before turning toward the mountain. Merchants commonly gathered into caravans for the final section.

The next caravan left in the morning.

Tomas reserved a place without waiting for the reply. Joining it did not require him to enter the dungeon. It placed him close enough to observe the surface approach and deliver a message if Kale authorized contact.

He also purchased a second set of the public guides.

The clerk watched him stack them.

”First visit?”

”Yes.”

”Reserve yourself a Sanctuary room as soon as you arrive. The good inns fill whenever an Academy group arrives.”

”I may not be staying.”

”Everyone says that before they see the place.”

Tomas carried the guides upstairs.

He spent the afternoon comparing them with the challenge records stored in his travel archive. The public Fey Nights map did not show every position used during the invasion. Its routes were designed for separate adventuring parties, not an army moving through one shared forest. The Highlands guide described objectives the hostile force ignored. Dread Fort expected a party to confront Kildra, not build siege lines against the ridge.

The dungeon was the same.

The experience had not been.

Near sunset, the reply arrived.

[Evidence accepted. Target classification: Confirmed pending direct surface verification.]

[Proceed with caravan. Do not enter under false identity. Do not conceal participation in prior challenge if asked. Observe public approach and await contact instructions.]

[Additional representatives will be dispatched.]

Kale had circled contact before conflict in the archive.

The order followed that choice.

Tomas packed for the morning.

Three streets away, Demer Holt received the same destination without any of the cautions.

Demer represented a private group that had spent the week after the gate closed purchasing rumors from every scout route it could reach. The group did not have access to the city’s cipher traffic. It did not need it.

Perren had told his resurrection story in a public dining room. The trade clerk sold Crag Mountain packets to anyone who paid. A route broker noticed that two strangers purchased every available guide within the same hour and sent a notice to one of Demer’s standing contacts.

Demer reached the trade house before dark.

He bought the packet, questioned the same clerk, and paid extra for the names of guides who knew paths around the largest Crag Mountain caravans. The Sanctuary’s safe-zone warning received most of his attention.

”The safe zone means we enter quietly.” His companion said as they reviewed it.

”That was always the sensible approach.” Demer replied. ”The packet tells us nothing about the surface defenses, the other levels, or where the core is kept.”

The challenge army had proved that direct force could cross the dungeon when given enough people, daily restoration, and seven days of preparation.

Demer possessed none of those advantages.

He did possess patience, money, and a destination the army had not known.

His group reserved faster mounts and hired a local guide. They would follow the same royal road as the caravan, travel with fewer wagons, and reach Crag Mountain first if weather remained clear.

Demer did not plan to attack the golden doors.

He planned to enter as a visitor, learn what the Sanctuary made public, and find the boundaries of what it did not.

At dawn, Tomas joined the western caravan with official instructions sealed inside his pack.

An hour later, Demer’s smaller group left through another gate.

Both carried Max Clarkson’s name.

Both knew the Sanctuary waited beyond Crag Mountain.

Only one intended to introduce himself honestly when he arrived while the other was aiming for the dungeon core.
