Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The airship was large enough to carry two hundred passengers and a lower hold full of freight.

Rod still felt every movement.

He stood at the rail while the Granite Wing crossed Corathen, watching roads become pale threads beneath them. Farms gathered around towns. Towns gave way to forest, then returned on the far side in patterns too large to follow from the air.

The newly formed party had departed before sunrise. Two hours later, the mountains ahead appeared no closer.

”You can sit down.” Lana said.

”I am enjoying the view.”

The deck shifted beneath a crosswind. Rod tightened his grip on the rail as he felt his stomach twist.

Dirk remained close enough to hear them while pretending to study the mountains. Nessa sat on a cargo chest with an open medical guide. Dain had chosen a place beside one of the airship’s upright supports, where the motion affected him least.

Lana leaned against the rail next to Rod.

”It is a good view.” She said.

He appreciated her decision not to discuss the color of his face.

The Granite Wing was not part of the dungeon level where adventurers fought across a crashing dwarven airship. It belonged to Corathen’s ordinary transport network. Its broad hull carried ore east, tools west, and passengers in both directions. Runed lift chambers beneath the deck supported most of its weight. Four enclosed propellers moved it along a fixed route marked by signal towers on the ground.

Nothing attacked it.

Deckhands checked rigging, cargo clerks argued over manifests, and a steward sold hot bread at a price that became less offensive when the smell crossed the passenger deck.

Dain purchased five.

He distributed them without asking whether Rod’s stomach wanted one. Rod ate slowly and discovered that keeping food down gave him something to accomplish.

The flight provided their first long period together outside the training compound.

During the previous week, Dain had learned the four calls the original party kept from its early dungeon attempts. He did not try to replace them with caravan signals. Instead, he showed the others two silent gestures useful when distance or noise made voices unreliable.

A closed fist near the shoulder meant hold position.

Two fingers turning downward meant danger below.

Dirk already used a different sign for the second warning. They kept his version because three people knew it and changed Dain’s gesture to indicate unstable ground.

Nessa recorded how each member’s abilities affected health.

Rod’s Unbroken Advance allowed him to remain in place while converting part of a stagger into movement, but the force still damaged him. Dain’s Brace Line reduced displacement and spread some impact through his shield and the ground. Lana’s strongest lightning spells produced numbness in her casting hand if she repeated them too quickly. Dirk’s mobility skills strained his legs without showing as ordinary health loss until the effect became severe.

”Tell me before the strain changes how you move.” Nessa said to Dirk.

”I usually stop first.”

”That works. I need to know what stopping looks like for you.”

Dirk demonstrated the hand signal he used when he needed recovery time but did not require immediate help. Nessa added it to her notes.

The conversation did not resemble the interviews. Nobody was deciding whether Nessa knew enough to join them. They were giving her the information required to keep four specific people alive.

Midnight spent most of the flight asleep inside Lana’s open pack.

When the airship began descending, the cat emerged, took one look over the rail, and retreated into the pack without comment.

Highforge occupied an entire mountain basin.

Stone districts climbed the inner slopes in broad terraces. Bridges crossed above streets crowded with wagons. Foundry chimneys released white steam through copper caps designed to catch sparks. Three airship towers rose above the highest public buildings, each surrounded by loading platforms and cranes.

The Granite Wing descended beside the eastern tower.

Its lower hold opened before the passenger ramps settled. Dwarven crews moved ore crates onto waiting lifts while travelers collected packs, cages, rolled carpets, and one protesting goat. Highforge’s arrival hall contained more people than many cities Rod had visited before entering the dungeon.

Deepvein lay beyond the airship routes.

The party retrieved its reserved horses from a stable beneath the tower. Corathian mountain horses were shorter and heavier than the animals used on open roads. Their broad hooves handled stone better than speed. Rod’s mount examined the axe strapped behind his saddle and appeared to judge him for bringing it.

They left through Highforge’s western gate shortly after the morning bells.

The road climbed for the entire first hour.

It passed quarries, terraced neighborhoods, and smithies built where mountain streams could power their hammers. Traffic thinned beyond the last outer district. Ore wagons continued toward the city. Supply carts and adventuring parties traveled in the other direction.

Deepvein’s growing business was visible before they saw the settlement. Inns marked the distance on painted stones. A farrier had opened a roadside yard where two routes met. Merchants offered timber braces, mining lamps, empty material cases, and badges advertised as lucky despite having never entered a mine.

The party rode for a full day.

They stopped twice to rest the horses and once because the road stopped them.

An ore wagon had lost its uphill wheel on a narrow bend. The wagon body leaned toward the drop while two dwarven drivers held the brake and shouted at everyone approaching from either direction. One horse had fallen in the traces. A dark patch beneath its foreleg spread across the road.

Nessa dismounted before the party reached the wagon.

”Animal healer?” One driver asked.

”Enough to stop the bleeding.”

Dain placed himself behind the tilted wagon and examined the remaining wheel. Rod moved beside him. They could lift the body, but doing so before someone secured the cargo would send three tons of ore toward the ravine.

Dirk climbed the inner slope and found a stone outcrop strong enough for ropes. Lana froze two wedges beneath the wagon frame after a driver positioned them. The ice would not hold forever under the weight, but it kept the body from shifting while Dain passed a line beneath the axle.

Nessa knelt beside the fallen horse.

The broken wheel had thrown a strip of metal into its leg. She used a narrow barrier to slow the blood, removed the metal, and closed the deepest part of the wound. Healing magic could repair flesh. It could not convince a panicked animal to remain still while strangers worked around it.

Midnight approached from the road.

The horse’s eye followed the small black cat. Its breathing slowed enough for Nessa to finish.

Above them, Dirk anchored the ropes. Dain and Rod lifted the wagon body together while the drivers unloaded the nearest ore cases. Lana maintained the wedges until a spare wheel could be forced onto the axle.

The delay lasted nearly an hour.

The dwarves offered payment. Rod accepted only directions to the best stable in Deepvein and a warning that the next spring crossing had washed out.

They resumed the journey by the upper road.

”We worked together better when nobody planned it.” Dain said once the wagon disappeared behind them.

”The wagon did not adjust its tactics.” Dirk replied.

”Give it time.” Dain said. ”Wait until you run into a mimic that is pretending to be a carriage.” The others were not sure if he was joking or not.

By late afternoon, the road narrowed between dark stone slopes. Veins of pale crystal appeared in places where the mountain had split. Warning signs instructed travelers not to chip samples from the exposed faces.

Deepvein came into view near sunset.

The settlement filled a high valley around the mine yard. Stone homes pressed against the slopes. Smithies and repair shops occupied the lower ground. Ore carts crossed beneath covered rails, and dwarves in work clothes moved between shifts as though adventuring parties were one more kind of freight to organize.

The mine gates stood at the far end of the central yard.

Pale blue crystal grew around the stone arch behind them.

The party took the drivers’ advice and found rooms above a stable operated by three generations of the same family. Their horses received food and more attention than the travelers. Rod did not object. He wanted his mount to forget the airship tower, the axe, and the mountain road before they traveled together again.

They ate in a crowded common room.

Two parties had completed Deepvein that day. One displayed a recovered mining badge beside its table until a settlement clerk arrived to record it. The other argued about whether clearing one additional nest would have made the Crystal Maw weak enough to avoid three deaths.

Nessa listened without treating the story as reliable instruction.

The instance varied. Another group might begin in a different gallery, encounter a different number of nests, or reach the final chamber through a route that changed which risks mattered.

Dirk unfolded the public mine guide.

”Markers remain reliable.” He said. ”Red triangles mean unstable crystal. Double lines indicate a supported route. A circle with a cut through it marks a sealed ventilation shaft.”

Lana studied the mana warnings. ”Lightning near a full vein can jump farther than the spell’s normal range.”

”Can your ice isolate it?” Dain asked.

”Sometimes. I will assume no until I see the crystal.”

They decided nothing else that night.

Morning began at Ketta Ironpick’s contract office.

The forewoman stood behind a stone counter while three clerks processed groups in separate lines. Ketta wore a leather apron over work clothes and carried a hammer that looked useful for both mining and ending arguments.

She checked the five names on Rod’s registration.

”First contract here?”

”Yes.” Rod said.

Ketta placed a slate on the counter.

[Deepvein Mine]

[Recommended party size: 5]

[Destroy active nests in assigned galleries.]

[Kill the mature crystal feeder in the deep vein.]

[Optional: recover lost mining badges and usable equipment.]

[Mine supports and safety markers must remain intact.]

[Completion cooldown: 10 days for all registered party members.]

[Settlement share and damage penalties apply.]

”The copy below resets.” Ketta said. ”Your habits do not. You cut a support because you think it will return later, I still record that you cut it. Follow the markers. If you find a living miner where no living miner should be, bring the fool back.”

”Has that happened?” Nessa asked.

”No. Not yet.”

They accepted the contract.

The outer yard did not change. Miners continued loading carts. Another party entered the gate ahead of them and crossed toward the lift. A group returning from its own copy emerged muddy, exhausted, and carrying a crystal-lined metal case between two people.

Rod’s party passed through the same permanent mine.

At the lift, a silver outline formed around the gate after all five stepped onto the platform. Midnight occupied Lana’s pack with his head above the flap. Dain checked his shield strap. Nessa placed Held Remedy on Rod, Dain, and herself. Dirk studied the shaft beneath them.

”We choose how to operate after we see the first gallery.” Rod said.

Nobody needed more of a plan before the mine revealed the problem.

Ketta pulled the lever.

The lift descended through worked stone. Lamps passed one by one above them. The sounds of the persistent mine faded until only chains, gears, and the wooden platform remained.

Pale light crossed the gate.

For an instant, the shaft seemed to divide around them. Another lift moved somewhere beside theirs carrying people they could not see. Then the silver outline closed, and Rod’s party continued alone.

The boundary had separated their copy from every other group below Deepvein.

The lift slowed.

An old drilling chamber appeared beneath them. Broken machinery occupied the center. Three rail tunnels left the far wall. Blue crystal shone along the ceiling, and small translucent shapes moved through its light.

Dirk raised one hand.

Unstable ground.

The gate opened.
