Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Lucian Voss saw Caldris (Capital of Corathen) before he understood that he was looking at the city.

He stood on a low ridge three miles ahead of the caravan while the morning mist withdrew from the road. Farms covered the broad valley below. Beyond them, tiled roofs gathered around a river and spread east until distance turned them gray.

Lucian opened the regional map.

The next marked town should have been nine miles away.

There was no town on the road ahead. There were warehouses, mills, workers’ houses, animal yards, signal towers, and a line of freight wagons so long that its far end disappeared behind a second ridge. The settlement continued past every border shown on the map because the map had been printed twelve years before and Caldris had continued growing.

One of the signal towers displayed a white crown above a black southern gate, the road emblem for Caldris.

The city had begun.

Lucian closed the map and moved down the ridge.

His Scout class did not make him invisible. Quiet Step reduced the sound of his movement when he placed his feet correctly. Broken Outline made it harder for distant eyes to follow him through cover. Route Memory allowed him to retain turns, slopes, water crossings, and marked hazards with more accuracy than an ordinary traveler.

None of those abilities replaced looking where he was going.

The road entered a cluster of farm buildings before joining the freight traffic. Lucian stayed on the raised shoulder and watched the wagons. Blue boards directed food and livestock toward the river markets. Red boards marked industrial cargo. White boards indicated passenger routes. Their caravan carried dyed cloth, Sanctuary tools, preserved southern fruit, three cases of alchemical glass, and private baggage belonging to twelve travelers.

Mixed cargo used a yellow route.

The first yellow board pointed west instead of toward the visible districts.

Lucian followed it far enough to find a bridge inspection station and a notice stating that two central freight arches remained closed for military repair. The detour crossed a canal, passed beneath an airship approach lane, and entered Caldris through a warehouse district miles from the road on the caravan master’s map.

He recorded every turn with Route Memory, then left the traffic and returned south through the fields.

The caravan had been traveling through Corathen for more than four weeks.

Lucian entered Level Five soon after it opened, stepped through the stone arrival gate outside the starter village, and discovered that the largest city on the local wall map continued beyond the map’s northern edge. He joined a merchant group traveling to Redbrook for the first part of the journey. In Redbrook, he found a larger caravan already hiring guards, drivers, laborers, and one scout willing to work through the entire northern route.

The guards protected the wagons.

Lucian made certain the wagons did not reach the places that required protection.

He rode ahead each morning, checked bridges and camps, confirmed water, read fresh tracks, and returned before the lead driver committed thirty wagons to a road too narrow for them to reverse. Three times he found ordinary problems: a washed bank, a village market blocking the royal road, and a bridge whose posted weight limit did not look to be true.

Once he found six people waiting behind a fallen tree with weapons concealed beneath farm coats.

The caravan changed roads and reported them at the next patrol station. Lucian never learned whether they were bandits or frightened locals who planned to ask for help.

The journey paused during the challenge when military columns took priority on the northern roads and rumors placed an invading army somewhere inside Corathen. The caravan remained for three days inside a walled town rather than competing with supply wagons. Once the roads reopened, they continued.

Now the lead wagons climbed a hill toward him.

The caravan master rode beside the first team. He read Lucian’s hand signal and stopped without calling the guards forward.

”The old route is closed.” Lucian said when the man reached him. ”Mixed freight goes west at the crown marker, across the inspection bridge, then north beside the canal. I walked it as far as the first warehouse gate.”

”How much time?”

”We will reach the inspection station before midday. Reaching the assigned yard depends on the city.”

The caravan master looked past Lucian toward the roofs in the valley and a young apprentice next to the man asked. ”So this is Caldris?”

”The outer edge.” The caravan master answered.

The answer moved back through the wagons faster than any formal announcement. Travelers climbed onto seats. Drivers stood in their footboards. Guards who had spent weeks watching ditches turned toward the skyline.

They entered the outer agricultural wards before noon.

The city did not replace the countryside at a wall. Market gardens gave way to food depots. Depots stood beside worker housing. A satellite town surrounded an old stone gate whose towers now controlled carts traveling between two districts of the same city. Beyond it, another band of farms occupied land preserved beneath water-supply rules. Then came more buildings.

Each ridge revealed a larger section.

Airships crossed above them on fixed approaches. Small courier craft flew between signal towers. Full-sized dwarven vessels moved toward docks that rose from the eastern industrial wards, their cargo hulls suspended beneath reinforced lift chambers. Lucian counted seventeen before the inspection bridge and stopped trying after that.

The bridge crossed a canal broad enough for six barges to pass side by side. It was not one of the six great bridges shown on every guide to Caldris. Those crossed the main rivers nearer the center. This unnamed freight bridge carried more traffic in an hour than the starter village saw in a week.

Inspectors divided the caravan by manifest without unloading every wagon. Sealed cargo from the Sanctuary received a mana check. Food was sent through an agricultural lane. The alchemical glass required a bright orange marker and a route avoiding two temple districts where open volatile cargo was prohibited.

Lucian presented his visitor registration with the caravan’s employment record.

The inspector looked at the starter-village seal. ”First time in Caldris?”

”Yes. Umm... this may sound weird, but where might I find a graveyard.”

”There are thirty-two public sites. Use one near where you sleep, not the Royal Cemetery because you like the name.” The inspector did find the question weird, but he was aware that people from outside the dungeon could use them to come back to life. So, he answered the question and then got back to work.

The inspector stamped his record and waved him through.

Past the bridge, the yellow route divided into three. The temporary signs Lucian had already studied sent them beside the canal, but the route ended at a freight circle crowded with stopped wagons. A municipal clerk stood on a platform shouting district numbers while drivers argued from six approaches.

The caravan master’s assigned yard lay in the South Freight Ward. Its permit contained a street code rather than a map.

Lucian dismounted.

He could have waited for the traffic clerk to reach them. Their thirty wagons would have blocked the circle until afternoon.

Instead, he followed the warehouse numbers on foot.

The district had been built around freight rather than people. Covered loading walks crossed above the streets. Rail carts moved beneath them. Warehouses stood six and seven stories tall, each with hoists built into stone fronts. Streets wide enough for four wagons narrowed without warning where older buildings had survived a reconstruction.

Lucian moved through the traffic without using Quiet Step. Silence had no value among iron wheels, shouting teamsters, and loading cranes. He used Broken Outline only when he crossed behind moving wagons, allowing their shapes to interrupt anyone trying to follow his exact position.

The skill was meant for brush and broken terrain.

It worked just as well among carts.

He found the assigned yard two streets from a canal pier. Its southern entrance was open, but the approach from the freight circle passed beneath an arch too low for one of their loaded wagons. The northern entrance connected to a broader street.

Lucian memorized the route, returned to the caravan, and climbed onto the lead wagon.

”Follow the green warehouse numbers until eighty-four.” He told the driver. ”Then take the north lane around the grain exchange. Do not use the south arch even if someone waves you toward it.”

The driver looked at the wagons trapped ahead. ”Can we reach the north lane from here?”

”We can if the next two carts let us cross.”

Lucian walked to the first driver, showed the Caldris freight permit, and asked for space before his caravan became another permanent feature of the freight circle. The man laughed, cursed the municipal routing office, and held his team long enough for the first six wagons to enter the crossing. The rest followed before opposing traffic closed the gap.

The caravan reached its yard near the evening bells.

Lucian had been inside Caldris for six hours. He had not seen the old central wall, the six great bridges, the royal palace, or any district likely to appear on a painted travel poster. The South Freight Ward alone contained more streets than Redbrook.

The city guide sold beside the yard listed Caldris’s population as more than fifteen million.

Lucian believed it.

Even the freight district did not belong to one people. Dwarven stone warehouses stood beside human counting houses. Orc labor companies operated heavy lifts near the canal. Elven roof gardens spread across buildings where preserving herbs required controlled sunlight. A group of fey couriers carried sealed cases through a side street without touching the ground more than twice.

No district remained pure merely because one style of building had appeared first.

The caravan master paid everyone in the yard office.

Lucian received the final portion of his scouting wage, a route-completion bonus, and a stamped reference confirming that no wagon had been lost during the journey. The caravan master added a second offer.

”We unload for three days and return south. Same wage, easier route now that you know it.”

”I am staying through the three days.” Lucian said. ”I will decide before you leave.”

”You intend to look for city work.”

”It would be a shame to come all this way and barely look around.” Lucian then thanked him and collected his pack.

Rooms nearest the freight yard cost more than rooms in Redbrook and less than rooms near the central bridges. The first inn had no vacancies. The second rented beds by shift to workers whose schedules did not overlap. The third occupied the upper floors of a stone bathhouse and offered a private room barely wider than its bed.

Lucian paid for four nights.

The innkeeper gave him a district map printed on both sides. One side showed the South Freight Ward. The other showed the four neighboring wards and the closest river ferry.

”I need a map of the whole city.” Lucian said.

”Then you need a shelf.” The innkeeper pointed to a narrow cabinet near the desk. Twelve bound district books occupied the first row. ”Start with where you are.”

Lucian unfolded the smaller map.

His inn stood near the edge of one square. The freight yard sat two streets away. The nearest public graveyard was marked beyond a workers’ market, and three contract offices occupied the same road.

”The graveyard opens at dawn?” He asked.

”It never closes. But the people working there only arrive at dawn.”

Lucian ordered an early breakfast and carried the map upstairs.
