Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The sixth day brought people who had spent the first five deciding whether the divine reward was real.

They had their answer.

High-level adventurers entered the distant city from roads, private teleportation portals, and ships that arrived above the towers. National formations filled the square before sunrise. Guilds that had refused Captain Kale’s first request for support now sent their strongest parties with letters explaining how much they had always valued cooperation.

The city had changed around the gate.

Warehouses facing the square operated through the night. Healers treated living wounded returning from the dungeon. Smiths repaired equipment. Scribes copied maps containing five days of corrections. Food arrived by the wagon and disappeared through the white fire in measured loads.

The divine opening had become the center of an economy built around conquering Max’s dungeon.

Everyone entering on the sixth morning knew what waited beyond the Dread Fort.

More than one hundred thousand undead.

Some people turned around after hearing the number. More kept walking.

They joined an army that already possessed roads, bridges, camps, and captured walls through four levels. The people who built those positions had died repeatedly to create them. The newcomers could cross in hours what had taken the first attackers days to discover.

That was the advantage Max had underestimated on the first morning. The invasion did not have to defeat his dungeon seven separate times. It only had to keep moving the edge of the war forward.

Kildra attacked that edge before dawn.

His restored forces emerged from dungeon-held tunnels beneath the Dread Fort and struck three occupied courtyards at once. The Warden retook the western tower, destroyed an attacker signal station, and reached the broken inner gate before Kale’s reserves contained him.

The gate remained open.

Kildra withdrew into the Dead Lands rather than allow the army to surround him inside the damaged fort. The attackers kept most of the structure. They paid for it in supply stores burned, healers displaced, and soldiers held away from the front.

Behind them, every earlier level demanded the same payment.

Sigmund’s fey attacked the forest camps. Hizon contested both routes across the Highlands. Restored defenders in Level Three fought around the bridges and airship wreckage. Veyrath destroyed an entire supply convoy before national mages drove the dragon away.

The invasion answered by assigning tens of thousands of people to its road.

The rest entered the Dead Lands.

Max watched the first lines form beneath the dark sky.

The undead army had not been placed in one convenient mass. It occupied valleys, roads, ruined settlements, and ridge lines across the approach to Level Five. Infantry protected heavy units. Cavalry waited beyond both flanks. Reserve formations stood far enough back that no single spell could reach them with the front.

Max had thought the number would be the defense. Six days of watching the invaders taught him that organization mattered more.

He divided the undead into commands. Kildra held the central road. Other officers controlled the ridges and ruined villages. Quin moved between threatened fronts. Anna coordinated information where the protected command room displayed every position the dungeon could identify.

Max remained above the field.

He did not need to swing a weapon to shape the opening battle. He closed a ravine beneath an attempted cavalry route. He pulled fog across a ridge where attackers were trying to measure the undead reserves. When mages began turning a dry riverbed into a road for supply wagons, he released the water held farther upstream.

The invaders adjusted to all three.

They bridged the ravine. Wind mages opened holes in the fog. The wagons moved onto higher ground before the water reached them.

While the first lines formed, Anna continued sending reports into Corathen. District governments nearest the Level Five entrance closed roads leading toward the Dead Lands. Mayors opened shelters and moved farm families without waiting for an order from Max. Regional soldiers took positions around towns rather than marching toward a battle they could not yet reach.

The country did not know whether the Dead Lands would hold.

It prepared for the answer to be no.

Then the armies met. The first engagement covered more ground than the entirety of Fey Nights.

There was no single charge and no moment when every fighter could see the same enemy. Undead advanced through three valleys. National formations met them beneath overlapping shields. Adventuring parties moved between military units to attack targets too strong for ordinary soldiers. Clerics created open lanes through the lesser undead, and Kildra closed those lanes with heavier formations waiting behind them.

Fronts moved by fields instead of feet.

A strategic hill changed hands four times before noon. Attackers took the northern ridge and placed siege magic on it. Undead cavalry passed around the position and cut the road behind them. Kale sent two guilds to reopen the route while the national troops held the ridge without supplies.

On the central road, the invaders built walls every time they advanced.

The barriers were short, rough, and positioned to survive one counterattack. When the army moved again, rear units improved them. By midday, a chain of fortified positions crossed the first valley.

The undead did not tire, did not feel hunger and did not feel pain.

The living did.

Kale rotated entire companies away from the front. Fresh troops entered through passages marked by flags and runners. Healers worked behind the newest walls. Cooks prepared food under a sky filled with spells.

The war wouldn’t pause for a lunch break.

When one attacker formation withdrew, another took its place. When an undead formation broke, the units beside it closed the space. Large spells changed the ground and killed hundreds, but the battle was too broad for any one caster to decide it.

Max moved Quin to the northern ridge after a high-level party broke through its defenders.

Quin arrived in the middle of their advance, destroyed the spell anchoring their protection, and forced them back without chasing beyond the undead line. Minutes later, Anna redirected him to the central road, where Kildra’s right side was collapsing.

”I need another reserve force.” She said through the command link.

”You need four.” Quin answered.

”I was trying to remain optimistic.”

Max sent an undead cavalry force from the southern front. Kale noticed and shifted attackers toward it before the cavalry reached Kildra.

Every choice opened something.

That was the part no normal adventuring party could create. Five people threatened one place. An army threatened every place and waited for its enemy to decide which loss mattered least.

By afternoon, the defenders still held most of the Dead Lands.

The invasion had carved a corridor through them.

It was narrow, attacked from both sides, and supported by a road passing through every earlier level. Thousands of people defended each section. Engineers improved it while fighting continued around them.

At the far end, scouts saw the final threshold.

They did not reach it. The undead reserve stood between them and Level Five.

More than thirty thousand defenders had not yet entered the battle. Heavy cavalry occupied the open ground. Kildra abandoned the central road and placed himself in front of the threshold. Forces withdrawn from the outer fronts formed new lines around him.

Kale’s council stopped the advance.

For an hour, the army did nothing except carry supplies forward and gather everything capable of breaking the reserve.

New participants continued entering the gate in the distant city. They crossed the secured route and arrived in the Dead Lands after sunset. Some joined units already fighting. Others had been recruited for the assault waiting at the end.

The invasion used every kind of strength it had attracted.

National mages combined spells meant for sieges. High-level parties targeted undead officers. Clerics concentrated on opening brief paths rather than trying to destroy the entire army. Air units crossed above the front carrying attackers who expected to land surrounded.

The assault began along the whole reserve line. Its real weight struck one side of the threshold.

Kildra recognized the shift and moved to meet it. Max sent Quin to the other side before the decoy became a second breakthrough. The undead closed around both attacks.

For most of the next two hours, the line held.

Then the invaders brought down the ridge beside it.

The earth mages had been digging since the hour-long pause. They did not collapse the stone onto the undead. They pulled it away from the narrow ground everyone was fighting over.

A second approach opened through the ridge.

It was steep, unstable, and wide enough for the fresh companies waiting behind it.

The reserve divided.

Kale went through the new opening.

Kildra turned too late to stop the first ranks from reaching the threshold. He attacked their side while the remaining undead held the original road. The scratched shield disappeared beneath blows and reappeared farther forward. National soldiers locked shields around the people opening the passage.

The threshold activated.

White light filled an arch built into the far rock.

The first attackers crossed into level 5 expecting another battlefield.

They stepped into daylight.

A grassy slope descended from the portal to a road between living trees. Mountains stood far toward the country’s interior. A river reflected the evening sky in the opposite direction. Fields divided the land beyond the nearest hills, and smoke rose from settlements too distant to identify.

There was no far wall. No ceiling. No final chamber waiting beyond the road.

The attackers behind Kale continued coming through until hundreds stood on the slope.

They looked for a marker showing where to find the core.

There was none.

One officer climbed the highest nearby rock and stared toward the horizon.

”Where is it?” He asked.

Nobody answered.

They had crossed a fog forest, open highlands, a broken country of mesas and a shattered airship, a fortress, and an army of more than one hundred thousand undead.

Level Five was a country.

Max watched their markers appear in a remote border district of Corathen.

The local district had already cleared civilians from the portal valley. Wardens blocked the nearest road from the other side. Mayors across the region had opened prepared shelters without waiting for Max to tell them how to run their towns.

The invaders moved cautiously down the slope.

They had won a path into Corathen with one day remaining.

At midnight, silver light passed through every level.

The dungeon’s defeated forces returned. The attackers returned with them. The Dead Lands filled again, but its broken ridge remained open and the fortified corridor still reached the Level Five threshold. Inside Corathen, the invasion’s first camp remained on the slope beneath the portal.

Restored scouts opened their eyes with the country’s horizon still in their memories.

[First Champion Challenge Remaining: 1 Day.]

Kale stood beside the road while her cartographers unrolled blank paper.

”Find the core.” She said.
