Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Deepvein was a dwarven mining settlement of Corathen built around a hole nobody wanted to enter.

The settlement itself remained busy.

Ore carts crossed the central yard. Smithies turned ordinary iron into tools and support braces. Dwarves reinforced roofs, sharpened drills, argued over stone quality, and sold meals to travelers who had followed the mountain road from the nearest city.

The abandoned mine entrance stood behind three locked gates.

Pale blue crystal grew around the stone arch. Thin lines of mana moved through it like light beneath ice. The formation would have been valuable if every attempt to harvest it had not drawn creatures from deeper tunnels.

Max stood outside the gates with Anna and Quin while the mine forewoman explained the problem.

”They eat the crystal,” Ketta Ironpick said. ”Not the stone around it. Not timber. Not miners if they can reach a better vein. Once they consume enough mana, they divide. Leave ten in a chamber and you have forty before the next shift.”

”Why not abandon this shaft?” Anna asked.

Ketta pointed toward the mountain.

”Because that vein connects to half the settlement’s deep workings. If we seal it, pressure builds through the surrounding crystal. We break the crystal; the mana enters the water. We clear the creatures, and they return when eggs hatch in cracks too small to reach.”

The explanation belonged to Corathen’s history. Deepvein’s miners had dealt with recurring infestations for generations. They cleared tunnels, reopened productive sections, and withdrew whenever the crystal feeders multiplied beyond safe limits.

That made the site suited to a repeatable instance.

Max walked through Deepvein before opening his menu. The bakery, homes, smithies, storage yards, and shallow mine remained part of Level Five’s persistent world. Damage there would remain. If an adventurer stole a cart, insulted Ketta, or broke a bridge, the next party would encounter the consequences.

Only the sealed deep workings would separate into a renewable copy.

”The entrance needs to make the difference clear.” Max said.

Quin touched the first iron gate. ”The barrier can form beneath the lift. Everyone still enters through the same yard, but the separation occurs before they reach the infested tunnels.”

”Then parties cannot use the instance to avoid consequences out here.”

An adventurer being chased by Deepvein’s guards would not be allowed to cross the gate and disappear into a private instance. Active crimes, local combat, and other persistent conditions blocked entry. A registered party had to accept the forewoman’s contract before the lift descended.

Ketta had opinions about that contract.

”They follow the markers,” she said. ”They do not cut support pillars. They do not flood a lower gallery because it is faster than clearing it. If they find a miner’s body, they recover the badge. If they find a living miner, they bring the fool back.”

”The interior resets each time.” Quin reminded her.

”That is not permission to teach idiots bad mining.”

Max added the rules.

The Deepvein Mine would not be the first Level Five instance. The Hollow Watch had already taught visitors how a renewable location differed from the world outside it. Deepvein would be larger, more variable, and more closely tied to a settlement’s economy.

Max opened the design interface.

The permanent entrance occupied the top of the model. A dwarven lift descended through a stable shaft to the first infested gallery. The final chamber lay near the mana-rich vein where the largest crystal-feeding creature built its nest.

Those two points remained fixed.

The route between them changed.

Max built twelve approved sections: a narrow rail tunnel, a collapsed storage room, two flooded galleries, an old drilling chamber, a natural cavern crossed by timber walks, and several branching tunnels with different crystal deposits. Each copy selected only part of the set and connected them in an order that obeyed the mountain’s structure.

He did not want passages rearranging themselves without reason.

If a gallery sloped east, the next chamber could not suddenly emerge two hundred feet above it. Water flowed downhill. Mine rails connected to places carts could reach. Support beams appeared in worked tunnels and not untouched caves. The layout could vary without feeling like someone had thrown rooms into a bag.

Quin inspected the possible routes. ”A party could receive the flooded gallery before the drilling chamber on one attempt and miss it completely on another.”

”Yes. They can learn the hazards without memorizing every turn.”

The crystal feeders began as hand-sized creatures with flat bodies and translucent shells. They clung to mana deposits and became brighter as they ate. Larger forms occupied deeper sections. Some released stored energy when threatened. Others hardened into clusters around eggs, turning narrow tunnels into defensive nests.

None carried weapons or waited in military formations.

They behaved like an infestation.

[Deepvein Mine]

[Recommended party size: 5]

[Accept a clearing contract from Deepvein Mine.]

[Destroy active nests in assigned galleries.]

[Remove the mature crystal feeder from the deep vein.]

[Optional: Recover lost mining badges and usable equipment.]

[Mine supports and safety markers must remain intact.]

Ketta read the proposed notice.

”Remove?” She asked.

”It means kill.”

”Then say kill.” Max changed it while rolling his eyes.

The mature creature required more thought. A normal oversized monster would make the final chamber feel separate from everything before it. Max designed a Crystal Maw that grew by absorbing the same energy as the smaller feeders. The number of nests a party allowed to remain active would affect how much power reached it.

Destroying every nest created the weakest final creature but consumed time and supplies. Rushing to the deep vein produced a stronger boss and left more enemies behind the party.

The group decided which risk mattered.

Combat was only part of the instance. Parties had to read mining markers, decide which branches to clear, preserve supports, and carry recovered materials without overloading themselves. A skilled miner could identify safe crystal deposits. An appraiser could distinguish valuable fragments from unstable ones. A craftsman could repair a damaged lift control or rail cart.

Five combat specialists could still complete the contract.

They would not earn everything available.

Anna examined the reward table. ”The mining materials go to the party?”

”A limited amount. The settlement keeps the contracted share. And of course DC takes a small portion and sell it.”

Adventurers received dungeon coins, reputation with Deepvein and its associated mining organization, and a selection of crystal or ore recovered during the run. Optional badges increased the reputation reward. Preserving equipment reduced the settlement’s replacement costs and improved payment.

Destroying supports reduced it.

”What prevents the same party from clearing it every day and flooding the market with crystal?” Anna asked.

”A party cooldown after completion.”

The exact period appeared in the contract before entry. While one group waited, other groups could enter their own copies. Deepvein’s external gates did not close simply because someone was already below.

Ten parties could accept ten clearing contracts.

Each would descend through a separated lift and encounter its own infestation. The persistent settlement above would see ten groups arrive, purchase supplies, return with materials, and collect payment.

If one of those parties damaged Ketta’s office while celebrating, the damage would still be there when the other nine returned.

Max checked the projected cost.

Level Five had consumed most of the DP he accumulated during the dungeon’s growth. Less than two hundred million remained in reserve, and Corathen would never be finished. He planned to add cities, regions, instances, factions, creatures, and events for the rest of his life.

That made cost important without making him afraid to build.

Deepvein used less DP than a new region. Its settlement, characters, mountain, and history already existed. Max was paying for the separated copies, renewable inhabitants, reward framework, and controlled variation.

The instance could earn the cost back through entry, time, deaths, local trade, and the materials adventurers purchased before and after each attempt.

More importantly, it gave people another reason to leave the human roads.

Most new visitors were heading toward Redbrook and the capital. Deepvein stood in dwarven territory beyond a mountain route. A profitable repeatable instance would draw adventurers, miners, craftsmen, merchants, and transport companies into a region they might otherwise view only on the Grand Map.

Max approved the first construction stage.

Nothing changed in the settlement yard.

The dwarves had already built their homes, shops, gates, and lift. They did not receive a new tavern because adventurers might want one. If more visitors needed food or beds, Deepvein’s residents could expand their businesses with stone, timber, labor, and the money those visitors brought.

The change occurred below them.

Mana spread through the sealed shaft. The lift gate gained a thin silver outline. Far beneath the mountain, twelve possible galleries connected to an entrance that could become many entrances at once.

Quin entered the first test copy with four dwarven volunteers.

Max and Anna watched through the instance record. The party’s route included the natural cavern, a collapsed storage room, and one flooded gallery. The rail lines connected correctly. Water flowed in the expected direction. Crystal feeders moved toward active mana instead of wandering without purpose.

The test group found two problems.

The optional badge in the flooded gallery appeared beneath solid rock. A branching tunnel allowed the party to reach the final chamber without passing any active nest, making the Crystal Maw stronger but leaving the objective impossible to complete afterward.

Max corrected both.

The second test selected a different route.

This time, the lift opened above the old drilling chamber. The volunteers found three active nests, recovered a damaged ore cart, and reached the deep vein with the Crystal Maw at its intended strength. When the party completed the contract, the interior dissolved behind them and the lift returned to the persistent shaft.

Their boots left mud across Ketta’s yard.

The recovered cart remained in her possession. The crystal portion assigned to the party remained in theirs. A cracked support they broke inside the copy vanished with the completed instance, but the forewoman’s payment record still included the penalty for damaging it.

The system then placed the five testers on cooldown.

Ketta selected another five dwarves and sent them through the same gate. The lift separated before reaching the first landing. Their route began in the rail tunnel and contained neither the flooded gallery nor the drilling chamber.

That group could enter while Quin’s test party could not.

Max added a public completion ledger beside the contract office. It recorded safety grades, recovered badges, and the amount of contracted material returned to the settlement. It did not offer extra rewards for destroying supports quickly or carrying the largest unstable crystal.

Adventurers would still find strange ways to compete. Max did not need to encourage the dangerous ones.

Ketta watched the lift controls from outside. Ten sets of indicator runes glowed even though only one test party was currently below. Each represented a supported copy.

”How many groups can go down at once?” she asked.

”There is no limit.”

”And each one thinks it entered my mine?”

”Each one enters a copy of the dangerous part. They all come back here.”

Ketta considered the future stream of adventurers passing through her yard.

”I need more contract clerks.”

Max closed the construction menu. ”You can hire them.”

The forewoman nodded as if he had confirmed something important.

Deepvein did not need the Dungeon Master to run its settlement.

It needed him to make the impossible mine beneath it work.
