Chapter 844: Interdimensional Catastrophe

The Incubus System Chapter 834. Interdimensional Catastrophe

”Explain,” he said, leaning forward, the seriousness etched in his tone, his eyes fixed on me.

ʼIt seems Zatan and Beel managed to create a crack right at the border, slipping into the space between two worlds. Thatʼs why our radar was zilch, and all our hunting turned up nada,ʼ I explained, my eyes locked onto his, matching his serious vibe.

ʼOkay,ʼ he nodded slowly. ʼBut what about the guardian? That old tale says he doesnʼt allow anyone to hang around for long, and his weird behavior, whatʼs the deal with that?ʼ Lord Damon furrowed his brows, clearly puzzled. ʼI mean, Iʼve never heard of him teaming up with anyone or having the power to bridge worlds. Heʼs just there, chilling with his own mojo,ʼ he added in a sarcastic tone, his confusion making it to round two.

ʼItʼs a wild card, I agree. That guardian is a bit of an enigma,ʼ I admitted, scratching my head. ʼI mean, heʼs an oddball, for sure. He might be more than just a gatekeeper and heʼs got these untapped powers or something. Still, itʼs the same as a Rubikʼs Cube in the dark,ʼ I said.

Damon grunted, his demon-king brain clearly on overdrive. ʼWell, this is one mess that needs a cleanup, and fast,ʼ he muttered, more to himself than to me.

ʼYeah,ʼ I sighed, realizing this puzzle was about to get even more complicated. ʼThe situation is escalating quicker than a cat video going viral.ʼ

Due to my statement, Lord Damon gave me a flat stare. ʼCat video? Seriously?ʼ he asked, raising one of his eyebrows.

I grinned awkwardly. ʼWell, everyone loves cat videos,ʼ I said innocently.

He let out a sharp exhale. ʼScratch that. Do you have any idea why he did it?ʼ

I rested my hand on my chin, fingers drumming lightly against my skin. ʼHmm...ʼ I mused, trying to dissect the motives behind it all.

But after a moment of mental gymnastics, I just shook my head. ʼI donʼt have a clue just yet. But I bet, Beel and Zatan probably dangled something in front of the guardian that he couldnʼt resist,ʼ I suggested.

Lord Damon lapsed into silence, lost in the labyrinth of his own thoughts.

Eventually, he broke the quiet with a low mutter. ʼDid he do that to escape?ʼ His words slipped out almost unconsciously.

I leaned in closer, my gaze piercing. ʼEscape?ʼ I echoed, my mind immediately catching fire with the implications.

Lord Damon nodded slowly. ʼThe guardian is an enigma, even by our twisted demon standards. No one knows why heʼs there, or even if heʼs there for a reason. Itʼs a big olʼ question mark whether heʼs playing 4D chess to achieve something or just reacting to intruders like some sort of security system,ʼ he explained, the lines on his forehead deepening in contemplation.

I sat back, mulling over Damonʼs words. ʼSo, either heʼs the ultimate strategist or merely an instinctual force of nature,ʼ I summarized, the possibilities swirling in my mind like a vortex.

Lord Damon leaned back in his chair, his expression a mix of frustration and fascination. ʼYep, and thatʼs whatʼs got us all scratching our heads. The guardianʼs motivations are as clear as mud in a storm.ʼ

ʼItʼs like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces,ʼ I added. ʼWhat about your fatherʼs tales? What did he say?ʼ Then, realizing the mix-up, I quickly corrected myself. ʼI mean grandpa,ʼ I interjected.

ʼHe always painted the guardian as this dutiful creature, loyal to the bone, but lacking a bit in the smarts department. It just did its thing, no discrimination between friend or foe. It was all about chucking whoever got stuck at the border into one of the two worlds,ʼ Lord Damon explained.

He settled back into his chair, propping an elbow on the armrest. His hand rested against his lips, a frown etching itself on his forehead. ʼThe bummer is, your grandpa never spilled the beans about what this creature actually looks like or how much muscle it packs. He just spun it as a bedtime story for a kid,ʼ he lamented. ʼBut considering what youʼve told me, how it went after Beelʼs core, itʼs a sign that thereʼs more going on up there, unless Zatanʼs pulling the strings behind the scenes,ʼ he added.

ʼOkay, assuming Beel and Zatan managed to rope in the guardian to their team, whatʼs our move here?ʼ I asked.

This uncharted territory was a brand-new level of stress for me. I was certain the border played by its own rules, different from both worlds. Plus, if the guardian had the ability to open and slam shut the door between these realms, that spelled bad news bears. Very, very bad news.

He scratched his chin, pondering the mess we found ourselves in. ʼWeʼre at a crossroads here. If theyʼve somehow recruited the guardian, then weʼre dealing with a whole new ball game,ʼ he replied, his words laced with concern.

Lord Damonʼs eyes flashed with a mix of determination and worry. ʼAnd since the guardian got that kind of power, shutting and opening the gates, it means they control the traffic between our worlds. And thatʼs a colossal problem,ʼ he pointed out.

I ran a hand through my hair. ʼWeʼve got to figure out how to tackle this without setting off an interdimensional catastrophe,ʼ I mused aloud.
