The Maker: Hollywood

The heat on the soundstage was manageable, but the dust was another story.

Zack Snyder sat in a folding chair in Screening Room 3 on the Burbank lot, a massive porcelain mug of dark roast coffee balanced on his knee. His hair was still sun-bleached from three weeks under the scorching Brazilian sun, and he looked like a guy who had just finished running a marathon in combat boots.

On the eighty-foot screen in front of them, the raw, uncorrected dailies from Rio de Janeiro were playing in crisp 4K.

Daniel sat three seats over, leaning back with his ankle resting on his knee. Next to him was Greg, the line producer, looking significantly less stressed than he had on the phone two weeks ago.

On screen, the footage was relentless. The camera—a handheld Arri setup wrapped in protective padding—was sprinted down a narrow, cobblestone alleyway in the Santa Marta favela. Corrugated tin roofs overhang the frame, blocking out half the sky.

In the middle of the frame was Hugh Dancy.

He didn’t look like an A-list actor doing a stunt run. He was drenched in sweat, his dirty gray t-shirt clinging to his ribs, his knuckles torn up from brushing against rough brick walls. He tripped over an exposed drainpipe, hit the cobblestones hard on his hip, and scrambled backward on his hands and knees, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and completely frantic.

A second later, a practical military transport truck smashed through a wooden barrier behind him. The engine roared, real splintered timber exploded into the air, and a wall of red dust rolled down the alley, swallowing the frame.

”Cut,” Zack’s voice rang out from the camera operator’s microphone in the raw audio feed.

Daniel hit the spacebar on the control console, pausing the frame right as the dust cloud engulfed Dancy’s face.

”The practical weight is insane, Zack,” Daniel said, turning his head to look at the director. ”That truck smashing through the wall—it doesn’t look like a movie set. It looks like a news broadcast.”

Zack let out a tired, proud laugh, taking a sip of his coffee. ”I told you, Dan. When you actually drop six thousand pounds of steel through real pine at thirty miles an hour, you don’t have to trick the audience. The camera shakes because the ground is actually vibrating. Hugh didn’t have to act scared when that timber flew over his head; he was genuinely praying the stunt crew nailed their marks.”

”And the favela locals?” Daniel asked.

”Loved us,” Greg chimed in from the end of the row. ”We hired three hundred guys from the neighborhood as production assistants, security, and extras. Paid them double the union rate. When we wrapped the alley shot, the whole block cheered. We left the neighborhood in better shape than we found it, cleared the permits, and stayed right on the edge of the overage you authorized.”

”Good,” Daniel said, standing up and stretching his legs. ”The raw footage is looking good. Hugh is carrying the tragic weight on his back. Now we give it to the post-production team. When we drop the CGI monster into those practical alleyways, people are going to believe he’s actually there.”

Zack stood up too, setting his coffee mug down. ”We start the VFX integration on Monday. I’ve got the animatics mapped out. We’re keeping the transformation sequence slow, gross, and painful. No clean morphing. We’re going to show the muscle fibers tearing and rebuilding under his skin.”

”Make it hurt, Zack,” Daniel said, shaking his hand. ”Go get some sleep. You earned it.”

By two o’clock that afternoon, Daniel was back across the lot in Building F.

The heavy, soundproof double doors of Soundstage 2 clicked shut behind him, cutting off the low ambient hum of the main animation floor. Inside the recording booth, the air was cool, quiet, and smelled faintly of expensive leather and hot vacuum tubes from the vintage Neumann microphones hanging from the ceiling arms.

Sitting on a tall wooden stool behind one of the mic stands was Bryan Cranston.

He was wearing a simple dark blue polo shirt, reading glasses perched on the end of his nose, holding a thick stack of script pages bound with brass brads.

Bryan looked up as Daniel walked into the control room on the other side of the double-paned glass. Bryan tapped his headphones, gave a warm, familiar wave, and leaned into the mic.

”Look who decided to show up,” Bryan’s voice came crisp and clear through the studio monitors in the control booth. ”I thought you were busy running a media empire, Daniel. They let you out of the boardrooms?”

Daniel smiled, stepping up to the talkback console and pressing the red button. ”I only come out when the talent is worth looking at, Bryan. How’s your throat?”

”Feels good,” Bryan chuckled, setting his glasses on the music stand. ”Although I have to say, when Vince and you handed me the script for Breaking Bad years ago, I thought Walter White was the most complicated bastard I’d ever play. Then I read this.”

He tapped the script page for Treasure Planet.

”John Silver isn’t a villain, Bryan,” Daniel said through the mic. ”He’s an opportunist who spent forty years turning his heart into iron, and then a stubborn, rebellious kid walks onto his ship and makes him remember what it felt like to be human.”

”It’s the duality,” Bryan agreed, his eyes lighting up with that intense, craftsman spark that made him one of the absolute best actors in the business. ”On one page, he’s planning a bloody mutiny, and on the next page, he’s teaching the boy how to secure a rigging line so he doesn’t break his neck. I love him. He’s terrible, and he’s magnificent.”

”That’s why I called you,” Daniel told him. ”Nobody handles the shift between terrifying authority and paternal warmth like you do. We’ve got Robbie in the booth next door.”

The side door to the secondary recording booth opened, and Robbie Daymond walked in. Robbie was a powerhouse in the voice acting world, carrying an energetic, sharp presence. He was wearing a faded graphic tee and sneakers, carrying his own script, looking completely thrilled to be standing across from Cranston.

”Hey, Mr. Cranston,” Robbie said, adjusting his headphones with a respectful nod. ”Huge fan, sir.”

”Call me Bryan, kid,” Cranston smiled, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling register. ”Let’s make some noise.”

Daniel sat down in the swivel chair next to Warren, who was sitting at the massive mixing console with a notebook open.

”We’re recording Scene 54,” Daniel said into the talkback mic. ”This is right after the storm. The ship almost got pulled into the black hole. Morph died, the crew is shaken up, and Jim is sitting on the deck near the galley, blaming himself for losing the crewman. Silver walks out with two bowls of stew.”

”Got it,” Bryan said, shifting his posture on the stool. He leaned closer to the microphone, his shoulders slumping slightly as he dropped into character.

”Whenever you’re ready, Warren,” Daniel said.

Warren hit the record button. The red light above the glass lit up solid.

On the monitors in front of Daniel, a rough, animatic render of the scene played out. The 3D geometry was simple, but the timing was locked.

In the booth, Robbie took a breath. When he spoke, his voice lost its polished, cheerful tone, taking on the raw, defensive edge of a teenage boy who had been abandoned by everyone he ever trusted.

”It was my fault,” Robbie’s voice crackled through the monitors, quiet and bitter. ”I tied the line. I thought I secured the cleat. If I had just double-checked it, Mr. Arrow would still be here.”

Silence stretched in the booth for two seconds.

Then Bryan Cranston spoke.

He didn’t use his normal speaking voice. He dropped into a thick, heavy, gravelly rasp—a voice that sounded like it had swallowed sea salt, gunpowder, and sixty years of regrets.

”Now you listen to me, James Hawkins,” Bryan rumbled, the sheer physical weight of the voice making the audio meters on the console bounce into the yellow. He stepped closer to the mic, his brow furrowing. ”You got the makings of greatness in ya. But you gotta take the helm and steer your own course. You slick your sails when the wind blows, or you sit around whimpering while the tide pulls you under.”

Robbie looked up at Bryan through the glass, reacting to the raw authority in Cranston’s voice. ”I didn’t ask for your advice, Silver.”

”No, you didn’t,” Bryan barked softly, a gravelly, metallic laugh catching in his throat. ”But you’re gettin’ it anyway, ya stubborn little stray. Now eat your stew before I throw it to the cyber-gulls.”

”Cut,” Daniel said, leaning over the console.

Inside the booth, Bryan relaxed his posture, leaning back on his stool and taking a gulp of water from a paper cup.

”How was the cadence on the second line?” Bryan asked through the mic. ”Felt a little heavy on the ’whimpering.’”

”It was great, but give me five percent more tenderness on the end,” Daniel directed. ”He’s trying to sound like a tough pirate captain, but he looks at Jim and sees himself forty years ago. He doesn’t want the kid to break.”

”Got it. Less captain, more surrogate father,” Bryan nodded, turning the script page. ”Let’s run it again.”

They ran the scene four more times, tweaking the inflection on single words until the dialogue carried a sharp, emotional punch that vibrated through the booth.

Over the course of the week, the rest of the voice cast cycled through Building F.

David Tennant brought a manic, hyper-intellectual, stuttering brilliance to Dr. Delbert Doppler, turning technical space jargon into a hilarious, breathless comedic rhythm.

Cate Blanchett came in for two days to record Captain Amelia. She stood at the microphone with immaculate, lethal posture, delivering her lines with a razor-sharp, crisp military precision that made every line sound like a command issued from the deck of a flagship.

By Friday afternoon, the vocal tracks for Treasure Planet were ninety percent locked. The animators now had the physical, emotional performances of some of the best actors in the world to sync their frame rates to. The movie wasn’t just a visual experiment anymore; it had a beating heart.

On Tuesday morning of the following week, Daniel’s black SUV pulled up to the security gates of the San Fernando Valley facility.

The Valley lot was where Miller Studios housed its massive, permanent soundstages. It was a sprawling piece of land surrounded by high concrete walls, humming with the heavy infrastructure of large-scale film production.

Daniel parked near Stage 4, adjusted the collar of his dark gray jacket, and walked through the heavy side door.

The interior of Stage 4 was vast, quiet, and cool. It smelled like damp stone, old paper, and freshly sawed timber.

Built in the center of the soundstage was the full-scale set for the Chamber of Secrets.

It was breathtakingly dark. Massive, carved stone pillars shaped like entwined vipers stretched forty feet into the rafter grid overhead. The floor was covered in three inches of stagnant, murky water, illuminated by strategically placed green and cold-white lighting rigs suspended from the ceiling.

Sitting in a canvas director’s chair near the edge of the water pit was Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg was wearing his signature baseball cap, a light fleece jacket, and thick-rimmed glasses. He had a small director’s monitor resting on a rig in front of him and a cup of tea in his hand, looking completely relaxed and deeply focused.

Next to him, standing ankle-deep in the murky water and wearing dark, soaking-wet wizard robes, was Colin Morgan.

Colin was thirteen and a half now. He had just hit that sudden, awkward growth spurt, his limbs a little too lanky for his frame, his features sharpening out of the soft roundness of childhood. But he still had those deep, expressive blue eyes, and he carried a striking, mature presence for his age. He was holding a stunt wand, his face smeared with artificial soot and sweat, looking every bit like a kid who had just spent two hours fighting for his life.

”No, Colin, hold the wand lower,” Spielberg called out, his voice calm and authoritative. ”You’re not waving a sword. You’re exhausted. Your arm weighs a hundred pounds. You’re looking at the writing on the wall, and you’re realizing for the first time that Hogwarts isn’t just a fun magical school—it’s a place where people actually die.”

Colin lowered his arm. His shoulders slumped naturally, and his face shifted into a cold, haunted stare that aged him up five years in a single second.

”Perfect,” Spielberg said, smiling softly. ”Look right at the carved snake’s eye. Hold that posture. Roll camera.”

Daniel stood back near the soundstage wall, out of the crew’s line of sight, watching the master at work.

Six months ago, when Daniel realized his slate was completely overflowing with Treasure Planet, The Hulk, and the early planning stages for The Avengers, he knew he couldn’t direct the second Harry Potter film. The child actors—Colin, Rupert, Emma—were thirteen and a half. They were growing fast. The studio simply couldn’t afford a two-year delay between films before the cast aged out of the roles completely.

But Daniel refused to hand it off to a studio hack who would butcher the tone.

In this universe, the Harry Potter books weren’t light, whimsical fairy tales with glaring narrative holes like Earth-199. Daniel had written the overarching story to be a grounded, high-stakes magical mystery. The magic had rules. The danger was real.

And The Chamber of Secrets was where the franchise took a sharp turn into psychological horror and ancient history.

Daniel had set up a private dinner with Spielberg at a quiet restaurant in Santa Monica. At the time, Spielberg’s slate was packed. He had two historical dramas and a sci-fi project in development. He didn’t need another movie.

When they sat down, Daniel hadn’t pitched him like a desperate executive. He pitched him like a fellow filmmaker.

”I don’t want a kids’ movie, Steven,” Daniel had told him, sliding the script across the table. ”The first film established the wonder. The second film strips the paint off. It’s a gothic mystery. An ancient creature crawling through the plumbing of a thousand-year-old castle, petrifying students, while a young boy realizes he shares a psychic link with a dark lord.”

Spielberg had picked up his wine glass, intrigued. ”And the kids?”

”They’re thirteen, but they act like veterans,” Daniel had said. ” The pacing is relentless, and I’m handing you full creative control on the set. No studio notes. No committee meetings. You report to me, and I want you to shoot it like a classic thriller.”

Then came the financial hammer.

Daniel owned Miller Studios privately. He offered Spielberg thirty million dollars upfront against twenty percent of the gross backend points. It was an astronomical payday—a check so massive Spielberg’s agents had reportedly wept in the CAA offices.

Spielberg read the script that night. He called Daniel at seven the next morning and said three words: ”Build the set.”

Now, watching Spielberg on Stage 4, it was obvious the legendary director was having the time of his life.

”Cut! Print that!” Spielberg called out, taking a sip of his tea. ”That was brilliant, Colin. Get a towel on him. Reset the water rigs, we’re moving to the close-ups.”

The soundstage lights shifted to yellow, signaling a break.

Spielberg turned his chair around, spotted Daniel standing near the wall, and his face lit up. He stood up, waving Daniel over.

”Look who decided to drop by,” Steven said, shaking Daniel’s hand warmly.

”Just admiring the work, Steven,” Daniel said, looking around at the massive, dripping stone set. ”It looks incredible. The practical scale of the chamber is exactly what we needed.”

”Oh, it’s a dream,” Steven said, walking with Daniel toward the video village monitors. ”You know, when I did Jaws, we were fighting the animatronic every single hour. But what you’ve built here... the mechanical Basilisk head they delivered yesterday? It’s magnificent. It gives the kids something real to react to.”

”That’s just Dante being good at his work. How is Colin holding up?” Daniel asked, looking over at the young actor, who was currently wrapping a thick towel around his shoulders while a makeup artist touched up his soot stains.

”The boy is a force of nature,” Steven said softly, his eyes reflecting a deep professional respect. ”He’s young, but he understands subtlety better than half the adults in this town. In the scene we just shot, when he realizes he can speak Parseltongue, he doesn’t overact it. He looks horrified by his own voice. You cast him perfectly, Dan.”

”The tone feels darker than the first one,” Daniel noted, looking at the playback on the monitor.

”It’s a detective story wrapped in a ghost story,” Steven smiled. ”The suits at Universal or Warner would be tearing their hair out right now, telling me to make the lighting brighter and add more jokes for the toy sales. But working under your roof? It’s pure freedom.”

”That’s the only reason I built the studio, Steven,” Daniel said. ”To keep the suits out of the room.”

”Well, it’s working,” Steven said, clapping Daniel on the shoulder. ”Now get off my soundstage so I can flood this corridor with artificial fog.”

Daniel laughed, shaking Steven’s hand again. ”See you at the rough-cut screening.”

Months passed in a blur of relentless production.

The California heat gave way to the crisp, dry air of late autumn. The Burbank lot was operating at peak capacity. In Building F, the rendering servers hummed twenty-four hours a day, processing the cell-shaded spaceport sequences for Treasure Planet. On the Valley soundstages, Steven Spielberg had officially wrapped principal photography on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, moving into the edit bays.

And in Screening Room 1 of the main administration building, the final cut of the teaser trailer for The Hulk was loaded onto the server.

The lights in the executive screening room were dimmed.

Daniel sat in the back row. To his left was Tom, holding a notepad. To his right was Zack Snyder, sitting up straight, looking nervously excited. At the end of the row was Marcus, the head of distribution, his laptop open.

”Alright,” Daniel said into the quiet room. ”Let’s see it.”

The projectionist hit the play button.

The massive screen went pitch black. There was no studio fanfare. No booming voiceover.

Just a sound design element—a low, heavy, rhythmic thump-thump... thump-thump...

The sound of an erratic, spiking heartbeat.

The screen flickered to life. A tight, handheld shot of a dirty digital heart rate monitor strapped to a wrist. The numbers were climbing rapidly: 115... 128... 142…

Cut to black.

A quiet, terrified whisper from Hugh Dancy echoed through the dark: ”You don’t understand... you need to leave...”

Cut to a sudden, violent burst of footage. Rain pouring down in a dark, claustrophobic alleyway. High-speed practical military vehicles tearing through corrugated fences. Stuntmen diving out of the way of real wood and metal flying through the air. The camera work was frantic, dirty, and terrifying.

Cut to Hugh Dancy, cornered against a brick wall, dropping to his knees. He clutched his chest, his face contorted in absolute, primal agony. The heart rate monitor audio reached a deafening, frantic pitch: 180... 195... 210…

The audio cut out completely.

Total silence fell over the screening room. For three long seconds, the screen remained black.

Then, a tiny, sickly-green light flickered in the center of the dark frame.

It was a close-up of Hugh Dancy’s eye. The iris suddenly dilated violently, pulsing with a deep, radioactive green glow. The veins around his temple bulged against his skin, turning a dark, bruised violet.

A sound ripped through the theater speakers—not a clean, heroic monster roar, but a deep, guttural, terrifying acoustic blast that shook the leather seats and rattled the glass in the projection booth.

The screen flashed once, a blinding white light revealing a massive, shadowed silhouette bursting through a brick wall, turning the concrete to powder.

The screen cut to black.

Bold, clean metallic letters slammed onto the screen:

THE HULK

Below it, in crisp white text:

SUMMER 2033

The lights in the screening room slowly faded back up.

Tom let out a long, slow breath, turning his head to look at Daniel. ”Jesus Christ, Dan.”

”Is that a good ’Jesus Christ’ or a bad ’Jesus Christ’?” Zack asked, leaning forward anxiously.

”It’s a ’that doesn’t look like a superhero movie, that looks like a monster horror film’ Jesus Christ,” Tom said, a massive grin spreading across his face. ”It’s terrifying, Zack. The tension in sixty seconds is unbelievable.”

”The lack of dialogue is what sells it,” Marcus chimed in, clicking his laptop trackpad. ”Most studios drop a teaser with three jokes and an explosion. This feels like a threat. The internet is going to lose its mind.”

”When do we drop it?” Daniel asked, looking at Marcus.

”Sunday night,” Marcus said, pointing to his screen. ”NFL national broadcast. Fourth quarter, prime-time slot. Estimated forty million live viewers. The second it airs on TV, we drop the 4K render on YouTube and Twitter.”

Daniel stood up, pulling his jacket on. He looked at Zack, who was practically beaming with relief.

”It’s filled with tension, Zack,” Daniel said, clapping the director on the shoulder. ”The practical work in Brazil paid off. Nobody is going to see this coming.”

”Thanks, Dan,” Zack said warmly. ”Seriously. Thanks for letting me make it mean.”

”That’s the only way we make ’em,” Daniel smiled.

He walked out of the screening room, stepping into the quiet, carpeted executive hallway. He pulled his phone out of his pocket. A text message from Margot was sitting on his screen:

Landed in LA. Home by six. You better have dinner ready, Mr. Studio Head.

Daniel chuckled, typing a quick reply:

Tacos and a bottle of wine waiting for you. See you at six.

He slid his phone back into his pocket and walked toward the elevators.
