The Maker: Hollywood

The heavy mahogany doors of the executive suite on the top floor of the Team Disney Building in Burbank shut with a soft, expensive thud.

Inside, the room smelled of leather upholstery, polished wood, and cold, leftover espresso. The morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, sharp shadows across the conference table.

Lyle Prescott, the Chief Executive Officer of Walt Disney Studios, sat at the head of the table. He was sixty-two years old, meticulously groomed, wearing an Italian suit that cost more than a mid-sized sedan, and his jaw was set so tight the muscles in his cheek were twitching.

To his right sat Orson Croft, Disney’s Head of Global Theatrical Distribution. Orson was a sharp-featured man in his late forties who had spent the last two decades treating theater owners like lower-tier vendors who should be grateful for the privilege of showing Disney films. He had a glass of ice water in front of him, though he hadn’t touched it.

On the center of the conference table sat a sleek, brushed-aluminum speakerphone system.

”Is the line secure?” Lyle asked, his voice low and raspy.

”It’s a private digital bridge,” Orson replied, checking his iPad. ”We have Terry Kowalski from AMC, Rick Sterling from Allied Theatres, and Dave Henderson from Megaplex International. They’re all on.”

Lyle straightened his tie, leaned over the microphone, and cleared his throat.

”Gentlemen,” Lyle began, pitching his voice into that smooth, practiced tone of corporate authority that usually made middle managers sweat. ”Thank you for joining us on short notice. I know it’s a busy Monday morning for everyone.”

A static crackle came over the speaker, followed by the gravelly, cough-roughened voice of Terry Kowalski, the CEO of AMC—the largest theater circuit in North America.

”Morning, Lyle,” Terry said, sounding like he was already on his second pack of cigarettes. ”Make it quick, will ya? I’ve got regional managers screaming at me about concession inventory in Chicago.”

Orson Croft leaned toward the microphone, taking the lead. ”Terry, Rick, Dave—we wanted to talk directly to the three of you about the screen allocations for the rest of the summer quarter. Specifically, the IMAX and Premium Large Format screens.”

”What about ’em?” asked Rick Sterling, the dry, soft-spoken head of Allied Theatres.

”We’ve been reviewing the weekend numbers,” Orson said, laying a hand flat on the table. ”And frankly, we at Disney are concerned about the over-concentration of screen space being given to Treasure Planet. It’s a new, unproven aesthetic. Meanwhile, we have our late-summer family tentpole dropping in three weeks, and we’re seeing an unprecedented crowding of prime evening showtimes.”

A long silence hung over the line for three seconds.

Then Terry Kowalski let out a sharp, incredulous snort over the speakerphone. ”Orson, are you seriously calling us on a Monday morning to complain that Treasure Planet is taking up too many screens?”

”We’re not complaining, Terry, we’re discussing strategic partnership,” Orson corrected smoothly, though his eyes narrowed. ”Disney has provided your theaters with consistent, family-friendly content for decades. We expect a certain level of reciprocity when it comes to screen priority. We want you to scale back the evening IMAX showtimes for Treasure Planet starting this Friday, and lock in guaranteed four-week runs for our upcoming slate.”

Lyle Prescott leaned in, adding his weight to the pitch. ”We’re asking for a realignment, gentlemen. If Miller Studios wants to experiment with niche, edgy animation, they can do it on standard screens. But the premium formats belong to established franchises. If we don’t see a commitment to our upcoming schedule, we may have to re-evaluate our promotional co-op budgets and floor-percentage splits for the winter holidays.”

It was a classic Disney move. A subtle, velvet-gloved threat wrapped in corporate jargon. For thirty years, that exact phrasing had forced theater owners into compliance. You didn’t anger the Mouse, because if the Mouse withheld its holiday movies, your theater chain went into the red.

For four seconds, there was dead silence on the conference bridge.

Then Terry Kowalski started laughing.

It wasn’t a nervous chuckle. It was a deep, raspy, full-throated belly laugh that crackled harshly through the high-end conference speaker.

Lyle Prescott’s face turned bright red. ”Terry, I don’t see what’s funny.”

”Lyle, I’m laughing because I think you’ve finally lost your fucking mind,” Terry wheezed, pausing to clear his throat. ”Did you just try to threaten me with floor percentages? In 2034?”

”Terry—” Orson started, his voice rising.

”Shut up for a second, Orson,” Terry snapped, his tone dropping the friendly corporate front entirely. ”Let me explain something to you two from down here in the real world, where we actually sell tickets to human beings. Do you know how much money Treasure Planet made in my theaters over the last seventy-two hours?”

Neither Disney executive answered.

”It did thirty-four million dollars in my circuit alone,” Terry barked. ”On a non-holiday weekend! Kids were dragging their parents into the 10:00 PM IMAX showings! College kids were buying out midnight screens! The concessions sales broke our July record because teenagers were hanging out in the lobbies taking pictures with the cardboard cutouts of the cyborg pirate!”

Dave Henderson, the quiet CEO of Megaplex International, finally spoke up from his office in London. His British accent was dry as bone. ”Lyle, if I may chime in. Treasure Planet is currently running at a ninety-eight percent seat occupancy rate across all forty of my European IMAX locations. If I pulled one single evening showtime to put on your talking-animal remake, my local theater managers would literally burn my office to the ground.”

Lyle gripped the edge of the mahogany table, his knuckles turning white. ”Dave, we have a multi-decade relationship with Megaplex. We are offering you a reliable pipeline—”

”Lyle, with all due respect to your grandfather’s legacy,” Rick Sterling interrupted from Allied, his voice completely deadpan, ”your ’reliable pipeline’ over the last three years has delivered us three consecutive box-office lukewarm flops that barely cleared their opening weekend marketing costs. You haven’t given us a genuine, multi-billion-dollar cultural event in nearly a decade.”

”That is a gross distortion of our theatrical performance—” Orson yelled into the mic.

”No, it’s basic arithmetic, Orson!” Terry Kowalski yelled back, slamming a hand down on his own desk in Chicago, the sound thumping through the speakerphone. ”You want to talk about numbers? Let’s talk about Daniel Miller. Do you know what Daniel Miller has given me over his decade-long career?”

Terry didn’t wait for an answer.

”He gave me 12 Angry Men, which turned a room of twelve guys into an indie phenomenon. That was his first fucking porject! He gave me Juno, Inception, Shutter Island, Star Wars franchise, Iron Man, Spider-man, Captain America. He gave me GTA, which literally saved three of my regional chains from bankruptcy and broke every video game and cinematic record in human history! He gave me Zack Snyder’s Hulk, which did a hundred and forty-five million on an opening weekend because he had the balls to shoot real explosions in Brazil! And now he gives me a stylized space-pirate movie that has twenty-year-olds lining up around the block!”

Terry took a heavy breath, his breathing rough over the speaker.

”Daniel Miller has been making movies for ten years, Lyle. Ten years! And in those ten years, he has not dropped a single flop. Not one! Every single thing that man touches turns into gold and fills my parking lots with paying customers. Miller Studios isn’t some scrappy indie outfit in a rented office anymore. They are a multi-billion-dollar behemoth, and Daniel Miller is the only person in this entire godforsaken town who actually knows what audiences want to watch!”

Lyle Prescott was breathing heavily through his nose, his face pale now. ”Terry, if you refuse to grant us equitable screen access—”

”Then what, Lyle?” Terry interrupted, his voice dropping into a cold, dangerous whisper. ”You’ll pull your winter movie? Go ahead. Pull it.”

Orson Croft blinked, staring at the phone in shock. ”Terry, you can’t be serious.”

”I am dead fucking serious,” Terry said. ”If you force me to choose between Walt Disney Studios and Miller Studios today, right now, on this phone call? I will yank every single Disney poster out of my lobbies by five o’clock today, and I will hand every screen I own to Daniel Miller for the next five years. Because Daniel Miller keeps my lights on, and you guys are living in 1995.”

”I second that,” Rick Sterling said immediately.

”As do I,” Dave Henderson added without a second’s hesitation. ”We will not risk our relationship with Miller Studios to accommodate your hurt feelings, Lyle. Good day.”

Click. Click. Click.

The three conference lines disconnected one after another, leaving a harsh, flat dial tone echoing through the high-end speakerphone.

Lyle Prescott sat frozen at the head of the table. His mouth was slightly open. His hands were resting flat on the mahogany wood.

Orson Croft looked like he had been hit in the face with a wet towel. He slowly reached out and tapped the button to kill the dial tone, plunging the massive, expensive boardroom into a suffocating, terrifying silence.

---

Across town in Burbank, the sun was shining brightly over the sprawling campus of Miller Studios.

Inside the main administration building, Daniel Miller was sitting in his large, comfortable executive office. He was wearing a simple black t-shirt and jeans, leaning back in his leather chair with his feet propped up on the corner of his desk. He had a glass of iced tea in one hand and was skimming through a visual effects budget report on his tablet.

The heavy oak door to his office swung open without a knock.

Marcus walked in, carrying a large iPad in one hand and a mug of black coffee in the other. He didn’t look stressed. He looked like a man who had just witnessed a hilarious street performance. He had a wide, uncontrollable grin plastered across his face.

”Please tell me somebody got fired,” Daniel said without looking up from his tablet.

”Worse,” Marcus said, dropping onto the leather sofa across from the desk and setting his coffee down. ”Lyle Prescott and Orson Croft just tried to pull a strong-arm play on the theater chains.”

Daniel paused, lowering his tablet slightly, raising an eyebrow. ”Disney? On who?”

”Terry Kowalski, Rick Sterling, and Dave Henderson,” Marcus laughed, shaking his head. ”They set up a private conference call at nine this morning. Tried to threaten them into pulling Treasure Planet off the IMAX screens to make room for Disney’s late-summer slate.”

Daniel stared at Marcus for a second, then let out a low, quiet laugh. ”Are you serious? Lyle actually tried the floor-percentage leverage?”

”He actually did,” Marcus wheezed, leaning back against the cushions. ”He brought out the old corporate playbook. Threatened to withhold their winter release if they didn’t cut our showtimes.”

”How did you find out?” Daniel asked, setting the tablet on his desk. ”Did you have someone record the call?”

”Dan, I didn’t need a mole,” Marcus said, leaning forward, his eyes bright with amusement. ”Terry Kowalski called my cell phone at 9:12 AM. Literally three seconds after he hung up on Lyle. He was laughing so hard he could barely speak.”

Daniel chuckled, taking a sip of his iced tea. ”Terry called you directly?”

”Terry called me first,” Marcus corrected, holding up his thumb. ”Then Dave Henderson called me from London at 9:15 AM to make sure I knew that Megaplex told Disney to go screw themselves. And then Rick Sterling’s office sent me an email at 9:18 AM re-confirming that Allied is keeping Treasure Planet on all their primary screens through the end of August.”

Daniel shook his head, a genuine, amused smile spreading across his face. ”They were snitching on each other?”

”They were practically tripping over themselves to tattle on Disney,” Marcus said, slapping his knee. ”They were terrified that if word got back to us that Disney was trying to mess with our screens, we might think the theater chains were in on it. Terry was practically begging me to reassure you that AMC is loyal to Miller Studios. He kept saying, ’Tell Dan we told the Mouse to eat some rotten cheese.’”

Daniel leaned back in his chair, looking out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the bustling studio lot below. Golf carts were driving past, crews were moving equipment between soundstages, and Building F was humming with activity in the distance.

He thought back to ten years ago.

When he had first started out, right after the whole UCLA disaster, he and Tom had been operating out of a tiny, cramped apartment with peeling paint. When he released 12 Angry Men, he had to fight for every single screen. He had to convince cynical, old-school theater managers that a single room indie movie was worth showing in a three-screen multiplex in Ohio.

Now, ten years later, the biggest theater CEOs in the world were acting like protective guard dogs, barking at rival studios just to make sure Daniel stayed happy with them.

”It’s amazing what ten years of consistent box office will do for a man’s reputation,” Marcus mused, picking up his coffee. ”Disney thought they were dealing with an independent distributor they could bully. They completely forgot that you’ve generated more theatrical revenue in the last decade than their entire film division combined.”

”Lyle is living in the past,” Daniel said calmly. ”He thinks the brand name on the building still matters more than the movie inside the projector. Audiences don’t care about the corporate logo, Marcus. They care about whether or not the two hours they spend in that dark room are worth twenty bucks.”

”Well, right now, they think your animated space pirates are worth every penny,” Marcus said. ”We just passed two hundred million domestic as of an hour ago.”

Before Daniel could respond, his private desk phone began to ring.

It was a dedicated, secure landline that only a handful of people in the industry had the number to.

Daniel glanced at the caller ID screen.

The digital display read: JONAH GANTRY - WARNER BROS.

Marcus leaned over, saw the name on the caller ID, and burst out laughing again. ”Oh, this is going to be good. Put it on speaker.”

Daniel smiled, reached out, and pressed the speakerphone button. ”Jonah.”

Instantly, a loud, booming laugh blasted through the office speakers.

Jonah Gantry, the long-time CEO of Warner Bros, was laughing so hard he sounded like he was gasping for air on the other end of the line.

”Dan! Tell me you’ve heard! Please tell me Marcus already gave you the news!” Jonah wheezed, pausing to wheeze into his phone. ”Oh my god, I haven’t laughed this hard since the 2020 stock crash!”

”I heard, Jonah,” Daniel said dryly, settling back into his chair. ”Marcus was just giving me the play-by-play.”

”Lyle Prescott is an absolute, grade-A, certified moron!” Jonah roared, his laughter echoing loudly in Daniel’s quiet office. ”I just got off the phone with Rick Sterling. Rick told me the whole thing! Lyle tried to use the floor-percentage threat! On Terry Kowalski! In 2034!”

”It seems Lyle hasn’t updated his strategy manual since the nineties,” Daniel remarked.

”Strategy manual? The guy is brain-dead!” Jonah cackled. ”Word travelled through the executive suites in about four minutes. Everyone in town is talking about it. Lyle tried to flex on you, and the theater chains basically told him to take his talking animals and shove them up his ass!”

Daniel looked over at Marcus, who was silently wiping a tear of laughter from his eye.

”You sound awfully satisfied, Jonah,” Daniel teased gently. ”If I remember correctly, seven years ago, a certain Warner Bros executive tried a very similar strong-arm tactic against a young, upcoming director named Daniel Miller.”

The line went dead quiet for two seconds.

Then Jonah let out another massive roar of laughter. ”Touché, Dan! Touché! You just had to bring up the dark ages, didn’t you?”

”I seem to recall you trying to freeze me out of three thousand screens when I was first building Miller Studios,” Daniel chuckled. ”You threatened the theater owners, you tried to corner the summer distribution, and you tried to lock me out of the market.”

”And you threatened to pull your movies entirely, burned my distribution strategy to the ground, and forced me into submission!” Jonah admitted freely, shouting with laughter. ”I remember it like it was yesterday, Dan! In the end, I had to beg you to save Warner Bros’ slate!”

”And I made you give me full creative control and thirty percent of the backend to direct and star in Joker,” Daniel reminded him softly.

”And it was the best damn decision I ever made!” Jonah barked into the phone. ”That movie made us a billion dollars, won you a trophy, and introduced you to Margot! I’m not ashamed to admit it! You kicked my ass fair and square, Dan!”

Jonah took a breath, letting his laughter settle into a warm, genuine chuckle. The history between Daniel and Jonah was long, complex, and bloody. They had started out as bitter corporate enemies when Daniel was the arrogant new kid disrupting the studio system. But after the Joker deal, after years of watching Daniel consistently conquer Hollywood without a single misstep over his decade-long career, Jonah had long since abandoned any attempt to fight him. Now, they operated with a deep, mutual, somewhat cynical, veteran respect for each other.

”That’s why I’m laughing so hard today, Dan,” Jonah said, his tone softening into a conversational rhythm. ”I learned my lesson years ago. I realized that trying to bully Daniel Miller is like trying to stop a freight train with a plastic spoon. But Lyle? Lyle is arrogant. He thought because he sits in the Walt Disney chair, the universe has to bend to him. He didn’t realize that you don’t just own a studio anymore—you own the whole damn ecosystem.”

”I don’t own it, Jonah,” Daniel said modestly. ”I just give the theaters movies that people actually want to pay to see.”

”Potato, potato,” Jonah snorted. ”The point is, Disney made themselves look like absolute amateur hour today. Lyle tried to play hardball, and now every theater CEO in North America and Europe is looking at Disney like they’re a dying relic. It’s beautiful. I’m going to open a very expensive bottle of scotch tonight just to celebrate Lyle’s public humiliation. My wife has skipped her soap opera today to enjoy this circus.”

”Don’t drink too much, Jonah, you’ve got your own slate to manage,” Daniel joked.

”Ah, forget about Lyle and his trivial bullshit,” Jonah dismissed with a wave of his hand, his voice shifting as he got down to business. ”That’s old news already. What I really called to ask you about... what’s going on over there in Burbank?”

Daniel raised an eyebrow. ”What do you mean?”

”Come on, Dan,” Jonah pushed, his tone leaning in close to the receiver. ”You just dropped The Hulk with Zack, which smashed the box office. You shadow-dropped Treasure Planet, which is currently breaking every animation record on the planet. Spielberg is in the Valley editing Chamber of Secrets for you. The trades are losing their minds trying to figure out what Miller Studios is doing next.”

Jonah paused, letting the silence hang over the line.

”So off the record,” Jonah asked, sounding genuinely curious, like a fan waiting for a reveal. ”What are you actually directing next, Dan? Is it the Avengers movie? Are you doing another original? Give me something here.”

Daniel leaned back in his chair. He looked at the quiet, comfortable space of his executive office. He looked at Marcus, who was watching him with a knowing grin.

Daniel smiled—a quiet, confident, unbothered smile that carried the absolute weight of a man sitting at the top of the world.

”Jonah,” Daniel said smoothly into the phone. ”You’re a very wealthy man.”

”I do alright,” Jonah said suspiciously.

”Then when the time comes,” Daniel told him, ”you can buy a ticket, sit in a nice IMAX seat, and watch it in the theaters like everyone else.”

A long sigh came over the phone line, followed by Jonah groaning in theatrical frustration.

”Always so secretive, tch,” Jonah muttered, though there was an undeniable grin in his voice. ”You’re a ruthless bastard, Miller.”

”I try my best, Jonah,” Daniel laughed. ”Talk to you soon.”

”Yeah, yeah. Tell Margot I said hi.”

”Will do.”

Daniel clicked the speakerphone off. The line went silent.

Marcus picked up his coffee cup, standing up from the sofa. ”So... Disney is officially neutralized without us having to write a single legal letter or press release.”

”They neutralized themselves, Marcus,” Daniel chuckled, picking his tablet back up and returning to his visual effects budget. ”Lyle forgot the first rule of this business.”

”Which is?”

”Never make a threat you can’t back up with a box office receipt.”

Marcus chuckled, walking toward the door. ”I’ll go tell the marketing team they can get back to work on the third-week Treasure Planet expansion. Have a good afternoon, boss.”

”You too, Marcus.”

The heavy oak door clicked shut.

Daniel sat alone in his office. The California sun poured through the windows, warming the room.

He took a sip of his iced tea, tapped his screen, and went right back to work.
