The Maker: Hollywood

The encrypted satellite feed from New Zealand connected with a sharp chime, displaying a wide, wind-whipped horizon.

Daniel sat at the edge of the mahogany table in the Burbank executive suite. Tom and Marcus flanked him, mugs of black coffee in hand, watching the high-definition monitor mounted on the far wall.

On screen, Peter Jackson was standing knee-deep in brown, churning mud, wearing a waterproof oilskin coat and a wide-brimmed bush hat dripping with water. Behind him, the rolling green slopes of Matamata stretched into the gray mist of a Waikato rainstorm. Dozens of heavy yellow excavators, dump trucks, and mobile cranes were actively carving terraced ridges into the hillsides.

Beside Peter stood Dante Ferretti, wrapped in three wool scarves, clutching an umbrella while enthusiastically pointing a wooden ruler at a massive earthen crater. Guillermo del Toro poked his head into frame, his thick beard covered in raindrops, grinning like an oversized kid in a sandbox.

”Daniel! Can you hear us through this bloody gale?” Peter shouted over the roar of a diesel tractor hauling a massive steel I-beam up the slope.

”Loud and clear, Peter,” Daniel said, leaning closer to the microphone. ”Looks like you’ve started a small war out there.”

”It’s not a war, it’s a civilization!” Guillermo boomed, laughing heartily as water ran down his lenses. ”Look behind Peter, Daniel. Look at the hill!”

Peter spun the rugged tablet camera around. Perched prominently atop the highest earthen ridge, held upright by four massive steel support cables and surrounded by root-protection trenches, stood a colossal, fully grown oak tree.

”We got her in the ground yesterday,” Peter said proudly, wiping rain from his forehead. ”Thirty tons of root ball, moved twenty miles by hydraulic flatbed at two in the morning. The local council had to shut down three regional roads. But she’s in. That’s the tree above Bag End. When Bilbo steps out to smoke his pipe, that oak is going to be framed against the sky exactly like the descriptions.”

Dante pushed his way into the frame, speaking rapidly with his thick Italian accent. ”Daniel, we are changing the structural engineering completely, just like you commanded in the memo. No temporary timber frames. No hollow plaster facades with chicken wire. We poured reinforced subterranean concrete yesterday for the first twelve hobbit holes.”

Marcus leaned forward, consulting his digital ledger. ”Dante, the concrete pour is three times the initial budget for temporary dressing. How are the moisture seals holding with the earth over them?”

”They hold forever, Marcus!” Dante shouted back against the wind. ”We use volcanic aggregate and marine-grade bitumen sealing. It’s not a film set; it’s an underground bunker! We are building them into the hill as true, permanent habitations. Forty-four holes in total. But we’ve redesigned the floor plans.”

”Explain the interior layouts,” Daniel said, his eyes tracking the blueprints Dante was now unfurling against the hood of an idle Land Rover.

”Right,” Peter picked up the thread, his enthusiasm cutting through the miserable weather. ”Originally, we were only going to dress the outside of thirty-nine of them and build two interior sets in Wellington for the dialogue. But since you bought the entire twelve hundred acres outright to preserve it as a permanent Miller Studios destination, we’re finishing the interiors on-site with real native timber—rimu, tawa, and reclaimed pine.”

Peter pointed toward the lower valley where a natural stream curved around a gentle knoll.

”The main luxury hotel will sit just outside the perimeter boundary, hidden behind the natural ridge line,” Peter explained. ”Three hundred private suites, spa facilities, and a fine dining hall, so regular tourists have a high-end base of operations that doesn’t ruin the visual sightlines of the Shire. But inside the park itself? We’re turning thirty-eight of the forty-four hobbit holes into fully functioning, high-end bed-and-breakfasts.”

”Real plumbing?” Tom asked, raising an eyebrow. ”Real utilities underground?”

”Completely integrated,” Dante gestured broadly. ”Radiant stone floor heating, recessed brass plumbing, hidden fiber optic wiring beneath the hearths, and wood-burning stone fireplaces vented through actual slate chimneys. A guest can stay the night completely underground, wake up, open a circular oak door, and look out over the morning mist rising off the pond. It’s an immersive retreat.”

”And Bag End?” Daniel asked. ”What’s the plan for Bilbo’s hole?”

”Ah, Bilbo’s hole stays sacred,” Guillermo answered, shaking his head firmly. ”You don’t sleep in Bag End. Bag End is the crown jewel. We are building the entrance, the long wood-paneled hallway, the pantry, the study with the map table, and the parlor with museum-grade precision. It will be the centerpiece walk-through exhibition where tourists can inspect Bilbo’s original quill, the hand-painted maps, and the hearth. It’s the anchor of the whole property.”

Guillermo turned the camera toward the bottom of the hill, where several stone masonry foundations were already rising near a natural millpond.

”Down there is the Green Dragon inn,” Guillermo continued. ”We’re building a two-story stone pub with working open fireplaces, rough-hewn timber rafters, and three distinct traditional ales brewed exclusively by local microbreweries in the Waikato. Across the bridge, we’re putting in the functioning watermill with a timber waterwheel that actually grinds flour for the bakery next door. When guests visit, they won’t just look at a movie backdrop. They will drink the ale, eat fresh bread baked from flour ground in the mill, and buy handmade leather goods from working smithies and leatherworkers along the village lane.”

”It’s an entire ecosystem,” Daniel nodded, deeply satisfied with the progress. ”How are the local authorities handling the commercial zoning?”

”They’re bending over backward to help us, Dan,” Peter laughed. ”The regional council realizes this is going to be the single biggest tourist draw in the southern hemisphere for the next fifty years. They’re already paving the two-lane highway out from Hamilton to handle tour buses, and they’ve granted us indefinite agricultural-tourism exemptions for the entire twelve hundred acres.”

”Good,” Daniel said. ”Build it to last a century, Peter. Don’t cut a single corner on the masonry or the woodwork. If you need another twenty million for the stone sourcing, Marcus will release the funds by end of day. Just make sure the Shire is alive and growing before the cast arrives for block one.”

”Understood, boss,” Peter said with a grin, tipping his drenched hat. ”We’ll send the updated 3D terrain scans by Friday. Tell Los Angeles to send warm boots when you come visit!”

The video feed terminated, leaving the quiet hum of the Burbank conference room behind.

Tom let out a low whistle, shaking his head. ”Twelve hundred acres of permanent fantasy infrastructure. If you told any studio executive twenty years ago that we’d be building real subterranean houses in New Zealand to turn a movie set into a hotel empire, they’d have had you committed.”

”Legacy studios think in quarters,” Daniel said, closing his leather notebook. ”We think in decades. The land pays for itself the second that third movie rolls credits. Now, let’s look at the teaser. Benny says the master composite is locked.”

---

The team migrated down the hall into the Screening Room.

The room was pitch-black, cool, and isolated from the outside world. Benny sat behind the primary console, running a hand over his scruffy face, his eyes fixed on the massive forty-foot micro-LED screen.

”This is the final export,” Benny said, tapping a key to queue up the file. ”Ninety seconds. Audio mix is calibrated to uncompressed 7.1 surround. We’re bypassing all traditional broadcast windows again. No networks, no third-party exclusivity. When you give the word, the studio account pushes the 4K raw master directly to YouTube, Twitter, and every social stream simultaneously.”

”Run it,” Daniel said, leaning back into his leather armchair.

The screen plunged into absolute, dead silence.

The audio opened not with a crash of brass, but with the quiet, hollow hiss of wind cutting through empty concrete.

The screen faded up on a low, lingering wide shot: a decimated, smoke-choked stretch of East 9th Street in Cleveland, doubling for Midtown Manhattan. A yellow taxi rested upside-down, its engine block smoldering. Pulverized concrete and broken glass covered the asphalt. The scale was immediately tangible—the absence of digital sheen made the practical destruction look terrifyingly real, like war footage broadcast from an urban center.

Over the silence, the strained, crackling voice of a police dispatcher broke through the audio:

”All available units, we have catastrophic structural failure at Grand Central. Requesting immediate tactical evacuation of the perimeter...”

A sharp cut.

Close-up on the scarred, scorched surface of the vibranium shield. A large, gloved hand reached down into frame, strapping the heavy leather harness around a muscular forearm. The metallic click was sharp, heavy, and resonant.

Another cut.

A shadow fell over the pavement. The camera tilted up: Robert Downey Jr. in the practical, battered Iron Man chest plate, face covered in grease and soot, eyes fierce, looking upward into the sky.

”They’re not stopping,” Tony Stark’s voice murmured over the track, quiet, stripped of all humor.

A rapid sequence of visceral, practical action hits rattled the screening room’s subwoofers:

Scarlett Johansson, moving with lethal, brutal efficiency, firing twin pistols through a smoke cloud, executing a low tactical slide beneath an overturned patrol car.

Chris Hemsworth swinging Mjolnir with bone-crushing force, a flash of blinding white practical xenon light illuminating the rain-slicked pavement as an unseen concussive impact dented a steel bus frame.

Hugh Dancy, trembling in the middle of a shattered intersection, his fingers clawing at his purple shirt, eyes widening with raw, internal panic as the veins in his neck flared a dark, unnatural emerald green.

The silence returned abruptly.

The screen went black for one second.

Then, the camera dropped into the legendary, uninterrupted circular tracking shot captured on the Cleveland street.

The 35mm lens curved around the six heroes standing back-to-back in the middle of the rubble. Captain America in the center, shield up, jaw set. Iron Man landing with a heavy mechanical clatter, repulsors humming to life. Thor gripping the hammer, lightning crackling along the metal. Black Widow reloading her sidearms with a sharp snap. Hawkeye drawing an arrow back to his cheek. And the massive, terrifying shadow of the Hulk looming over their shoulders, letting out a low, guttural rumble that shook the floor.

As the camera completed its rotation, the iconic, brass-heavy Avengers theme swelled with deafening, triumphant power.

The screen cut to black on the beat of a heavy bass drop.

Simple, embossed metallic lettering formed in the center of the frame:

THE AVENGERS

Beneath it, a single line of text appeared:

IN THEATERS THIS SUMMER

The video ended. The lights in the screening room slowly came up.

Tom sat frozen for three seconds before exhaling loudly. ”Holy shit, Dan.”

”The pacing is right,” Marcus said, looking at the screen with an analytical nod. ”You didn’t show the aliens. You didn’t show the portal. You just showed six icons standing in the dirt looking like they’re about to fight for their lives.”

”Audiences don’t need the plot spoiled,” Daniel said, standing up from his chair. ”They just need to know the promise is real. Benny, push the upload button. Let the world have it.”

Benny smiled, his tired eyes crinkling behind his glasses. He clicked his trackball twice, entered an authorization code, and leaned back. ”Render uploaded. Master feed is live globally.”

Within ten minutes of the upload hitting the internet, the digital world buckled under the weight of the release.

There was no press tour, no televised lead-in, and no prior warning. The official Miller Studios account simply dropped the 4K video with the caption: This Summer.

The reaction was immediate, chaotic, and completely consuming. The algorithms on major social platforms violently redirected their traffic feeds, pushing global news, sports recaps, and political debates into complete irrelevance.

On Twitter / X, the top eight global trends within twenty minutes were dominated by the ninety-second clip:

`#TheAvengersTrailer`

2. `#TheyAreAssembled`

3. `#CaptainAmerica`

4. `#MillerStudios`

5. `#TonyStark`

6. `#BlackWidow`

8. `#HulkRoar`

The comments section beneath the YouTube video accumulated seventy thousand comments in the first fifteen minutes, refreshing so fast the interface glitched:

`@VFX_Insider`: Look at the smoke behind Cap. That is REAL practical pyrotechnics. No digital haze, no floaty CGI fire. You can see the heat distortion cooking the lens. I was there in Cleveland and saw Daniel Miller blow up actual cars for our sins.

`@RedHood99`: THE CIRCLE SHOT. THE CIRCLE SHOT IS REAL. I AM A GROWN 32 YEAR OLD MAN SITTING IN MY OFFICE CRYING AT MY DESK RIGHT NOW.

`@BoxOfficeTracker`: Every studio that moved their summer slate out of next year’s window is popping champagne right now because they narrowly avoided absolute financial slaughter. This thing is tracking for the biggest opening weekend in human history.

`@ClassicComicNerd`: Notice how there are no quips? No stupid one-liners undercutting the danger? It actually feels like a war. Steve Rogers looks like he’s ready to die for that intersection.

`@CinemaAesthetic`: Scarlett Johansson doing that tactical slide under the cruiser with real shrapnel flying past her face... I have never felt this way about an action movie before. The sheer kinetic weight of this trailer is unbelievable.

`@HaterBait_2035`: bro it’s just guys in costumes standing in a circle chill out lol

`@ComicBookGuy`: @HaterBait_2035 ”Just guys in costumes” my brother in christ we have waited years across four separate franchises for those specific six people to stand in the same room. Go watch your art-house black and white movies and let us have this.

Over on Reddit, the megathread pinned to the top of `r/movies` and `r/marvelstudios` crashed the server cache twice before the moderators could stabilize the influx of users.

User FilmTheoryNerd: Let’s talk about the sound design. When Thor summons the lightning, there is no generic sci-fi zap. It sounds like an actual cloud-to-ground strike hitting an iron conductor. The dynamic range in the audio mix is insane. Miller Studios continues to embarrass every other production house in Hollywood.

User MidwestLocal: I was on East 9th Street when they shot that car flip! I was standing behind the police barricades! The taxi that blows up at the 0:14 mark was a real vehicle. The heat wave hit us three blocks away. Seeing it cut into the final footage with that color grade gives me literal goosebumps.

User CynicalCritic: I wanted to hate this. I really did. I thought combining four distinct franchise tones into one coherent narrative would result in an overstuffed, unwatchable studio disaster. But that 360-degree shot... it has the weight of genuine mythology. Daniel Miller understands screen presence better than anyone working today.

User AussieHemsworthFan: Chris looks like an absolute mountain next to Downey. The contrast between Stark’s battered tech and Thor’s mythical armor is executed flawlessly. June cannot get here fast enough.

Major media outlets scrambled to produce coverage within the hour.

The Hollywood Reporter ran a breaking editorial: ”Miller Studios Drops ’The Avengers’ Teaser Unannounced, Shattering First-Hour Viewership Records.”

Variety followed immediately: ”No Gimmicks, Just Pure Cinema: Why Daniel Miller’s Focus on Practical Scale in ’The Avengers’ Has Redefined Blockbuster Marketing.”

Across thousands of forums, reaction videos, and group chats worldwide, the consensus was uniform: the promise made years ago was finally arriving, and it was going to be massive.

By 8:00 PM, the digital inferno was raging across the globe, but inside the Bel Air estate, the world was peaceful, quiet, and completely removed from the noise.

Daniel sat on the broad sofa in the corner of his private study on the second floor of the house. The room was lined with floor-to-ceiling walnut bookshelves, softly lit by a single banker’s lamp on the desk and the dim amber glow of the fireplace.

He was wearing a pair of comfortable dark sweatpants and a worn black t-shirt, his bare feet propped up on a leather ottoman. In his lap was a heavy binder containing the preliminary casting breakdowns and character design sketches Peter and Guillermo had couriered over from New Zealand for The Fellowship of the Ring. He had a pencil in his hand, making small margin notes beside the prosthetic specifications for the Nazgûl steeds.

His phone sat face-down on the side table, vibrating softly every three seconds as hundreds of emails, congratulatory texts, and studio updates flooded in. He ignored it completely. The work on The Avengers was done; the cut was locked, the trailer was out, and worrying about internet numbers was a waste of mental bandwidth.

A faint rustle of soft fabric sounded from the hallway just outside the study.

The heavy, frosted-glass double doors of the room were slowly pushed inward.

Daniel didn’t look up immediately, his pencil hovering over a sketch of Aragorn’s broadsword. ”If Marcus called with the YouTube analytics, tell him to send an email in the morning. I’m off the clock.”

”Marcus didn’t call, Daniel,” a voice purred softly from the threshold.

Daniel lifted his head.

The pencil slipped from his fingers, rolling off the edge of the binder and dropping silently onto the rug.

Standing in the entryway of the study, framed by the warm hallway light, were Margot, Florence, and Scarlett.

They were standing close together, their postures relaxed, entirely confident, and radiating an overwhelming, electric heat that made the air in the room suddenly feel thin.

All three of them were wearing identical, floor-length bias-cut silk slip dresses, each in a slightly different muted jewel tone that caught the lamplight like liquid glass.

Margot wore a deep, shimmering emerald green that made her blue eyes look almost incandescent. The silk hung delicately from razor-thin straps over her bare shoulders, skimming the narrow curve of her waist and clinging to the soft flare of her hips as she stood with her weight shifted slightly to one side, barefoot, an amused, dazzling smile playing on her lips.

Beside her, Florence wore a rich, dark burgundy. The fabric draped lower across her chest, highlighting the curve of her collarbones, the hem falling softly around her ankles. She had her hands resting lightly on her hips, her short blonde hair slightly tousled, her eyes locked onto Daniel with that trademark, mischievous glint that signaled trouble.

And next to Florence stood Scarlett, wearing a pale, liquid champagne silk that practically melted against her skin. The slip dress clung to every single curve of her figure with effortless, dangerous perfection, the delicate fabric moving fluidly with every breath she took. Her red hair was down, brushing against her bare shoulders, her hazel-green eyes heavy with a slow, deliberate warmth that needed no translation.

Daniel sat frozen on the sofa, his eyes traveling slowly, methodically across the three of them.

The contrast between his quiet study, his casting binder, and the sheer, unadulterated visual impact standing in the doorway was enough to short-circuit his brain. His throat felt suddenly dry.

Daniel swallowed hard, an audible gulp escaping him in the quiet room.

Margot caught the reaction instantly. A low, breathless chuckle escaped her lips, her eyes crinkling at the corners with unvarnished delight as she took half a step forward into the study, the silk rustling softly around her thighs.

”Look at him,” Margot teased, her voice carrying that sweet, devastating Australian lilt that made Daniel’s pulse jump. ”The big studio head. He can face down six thousand extras, blow up three city blocks, and stare at David Goggins without blinking. But three dresses and he forgets how to breathe.”

Florence took a step forward as well, crossing her arms loosely beneath her chest, accentuating the neckline of the burgundy silk, her smirk widening until it was downright sinful.

”Scarlett helped us find them,” Florence chimed in, her voice low, husky, and brimming with playful menace. ”She took us shopping in Beverly Hills yesterday while you were locked in the basement playing with sound files. She said every woman in your life needed the exact same silk slip dress.”

Daniel looked at Scarlett.

Scarlett stepped up beside Margot, her hip brushing against the emerald silk, her eyes never leaving Daniel’s face. She tilted her head, letting a slow, incredibly wicked smile curl across her lips.

”I told them it was a mandatory production expense, Captain,” Scarlett murmured, her signature raspy purr rolling through the quiet room like warm velvet. ”Uniform standards across the board. You know how important visual continuity is to the brand.”

Daniel rested his forearms on his knees, his casting binder completely forgotten in his lap. He looked between the three of them, feeling the heavy, magnetic gravity of the room pulling him completely away from scripts, budgets, and Middle-earth.

”You three are completely out of your minds,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that was entirely stripped of studio authority.

”Maybe,” Margot whispered, walking slowly toward the sofa, her bare feet making no sound against the Persian rug.

She stopped right in front of him, resting one bare knee on the edge of the leather cushion beside his leg, leaning down so close Daniel could smell the faint scent of jasmine and sweet almond on her skin. Her hand reached out, her cool fingers lightly tracing the strong line of his jaw, tilting his face upward.

”Scarlett told us that the silk feels incredible against the skin,” Margot murmured, her blue eyes dark, locking onto his with absolute, hypnotic certainty. ”She said it has this amazing quality where it just... slips right off the body with the lightest touch.”

Margot leaned in closer, her lips brushing softly against the shell of his ear, her breath warm against his neck.

”So if you want to test the fabric, Daniel,” Margot whispered, ”if you want to see if they really slip... I suggest you drop whatever you’re busy with right now, put those papers away, and follow us into the master bedroom. Quietly.”

Florence and Scarlett were already turning slowly toward the hallway, casting matching, sultry, backwards glances over their bare shoulders, the liquid silk swirling around their hips as they walked.

No man on Earth possessed the discipline to resist that kind of temptation. Not even with David Goggins screaming in his ear.

Daniel didn’t say a single word.

He closed the heavy casting binder with a quiet, decisive snap, shoved it casually onto the side table next to his buzzing phone, and stood up from the sofa.

He didn’t look back at the desk. He didn’t look back at the blueprints.

He turned off the banker’s lamp, stepped into the hallway, and followed the three women into the bedroom, pulling the heavy oak doors shut firmly behind him.
