The Maker: Hollywood

The air inside Stage 4 smelled absolutely bizarre. It didn’t smell like the usual mix of hot tungsten lamps, ozone, and sawdust. Instead, the massive soundstage smelled overwhelmingly like a cheap bakery that had somehow caught fire.

Daniel stood with his hands in his pockets, staring at the massive, fifty-foot section of fiberglass piping that had been constructed in the center of the floor. The pipe was four feet in diameter, slightly elevated on wooden scaffolding, and completely cut away on the right side so Bob Elswit’s camera dolly could track alongside it.

The pipe was currently filled with about six inches of thick, dark, viscous sludge.

Dante Ferretti was standing near the mouth of the pipe, wearing his signature thick scarf despite the stuffy air of the soundstage. He was holding a wooden paddle, stirring the dark sludge with the intense, manic pride of a master chef preparing a delicate sauce.

Tom was standing next to Daniel, holding a clipboard over his nose and mouth, looking mildly horrified.

”Dante,” Tom said, his voice muffled by the clipboard. ”Please tell me what I am currently smelling.”

”Ah, the texture of reality!” Dante proclaimed loudly, pulling the paddle out of the sludge. Thick, brown ribbons of the mixture dripped off the wood, plopping back into the pipe with a sickeningly wet, heavy sound. ”It is beautiful, yes? The props department wanted to use brown paint and gelatin. I told them absolutely not. Gelatin does not cling to the skin. It does not look like despair.”

Daniel took a cautious step forward, leaning over to inspect the mixture. It looked exactly like raw sewage. It was thick, lumpy, and had a matte, muddy finish that caught the studio lights perfectly.

”So what exactly is it?” Daniel asked.

”It is my own special recipe,” Dante smiled, tapping the side of his head. ”Eighty gallons of dark chocolate syrup. Sixty pounds of fine sawdust. A little bit of warm water for viscosity. And, for the texture of the lumps... crushed chocolate sandwich cookies.”

Tom lowered the clipboard, his face relaxing slightly. ”Wait. It’s just chocolate and sawdust?”

”And cookies,” Dante corrected, looking slightly offended. ”It is entirely non-toxic. It is edible, though I would not recommend it because of the wood shavings. But on camera? It looks like the most foul, disgusting human waste imaginable. It will coat the actor beautifully.”

”I am standing right here, you know.”

Daniel and Tom turned around.

Cillian Murphy was standing a few feet away. He was wearing nothing but a pair of faded, gray prison trousers and heavy black boots. His torso was bare, pale, and shivering slightly in the cool air conditioning of the stage. He was holding a paper cup of coffee, staring into the dark, sludge-filled pipe with an expression of profound, existential defeat.

”Morning, Cillian,” Daniel smiled, walking over to him. ”How are we feeling about the chocolate syrup?”

Cillian took a slow sip of his coffee. His pale blue eyes flicked from the pipe back to Daniel. He didn’t yell. He didn’t complain. He just delivered his words with the dry, deadpan Irish sarcasm that he had perfected over the last decade.

”Daniel,” Cillian said quietly. ”Just a while ago, I was the Dark Lord of magic. I was feared by millions. Children wept when they saw my face on screen for the first time. I had a wand. I had dignity.”

Cillian gestured with his coffee cup toward the fiberglass tube. ”Now, you have me standing half-naked in a warehouse in Burbank, preparing to crawl through a chocolate-scented colon.”

Tom let out a sharp snort of laughter, turning his back to hide his face.

Daniel just grinned, reaching out to pat Cillian solidly on his bare shoulder. ”It builds character, Cillian. Think of the art. Think of the Oscar reel.”

”I am thinking about my life choices,” Cillian murmured, taking another sip of his coffee. ”Do we at least have warm water in the showers for when I finish?”

”I personally made sure the hot water tanks were turned up,” Tom promised, recovering his composure. ”You have two hours of crawling, and then you can scrub the cookies out of your hair.”

”Brilliant,” Cillian sighed. ”Let’s just get it over with.”

Before they could call for the lighting check, the heavy acoustic doors at the far end of the soundstage swung open, letting a brief, blinding wedge of California sunlight spill across the concrete floor.

Florence and Margot walked in, carrying several large brown paper bags from a high-end Italian deli in the Valley.

Daniel smiled immediately. It had been a chaotic month. Florence had been jumping across time zones on a grueling, multi-city press tour for a high-fashion campaign, and Margot had been out in the New Mexico desert shooting her gritty indie thriller. They had both finally wrapped their respective obligations two days ago. Finding themselves with a rare, completely clear schedule for the weekend, they had decided to hijack Daniel’s lunch hour.

Margot was wearing a comfortable pair of high-waisted jeans and a simple white tank top, her hair pulled back in a claw clip. Florence was wearing an oversized vintage leather jacket and dark sunglasses, which she pushed up onto the top of her head as her eyes adjusted to the dim lighting of the soundstage.

”Delivery for the director,” Margot called out cheerfully, walking past the craft services table and heading straight for the video village. ”We brought the good prosciutto.”

Florence walked right behind her, scanning the set. Her eyes landed on the massive pipe, Dante’s paddle, and finally, Cillian Murphy standing in just his trousers.

Florence stopped dead in her tracks. A slow, wicked grin spread across her face.

She walked over to Cillian, looking him up and down. Cillian just stood there, holding his coffee, knowing exactly what was coming.

”Cillian,” Florence said, her voice dripping with mock concern. ”You look terrible. Is this a new Irish skincare routine? Because honestly, a mud mask is supposed to go on your face, not your entire life.”

Cillian maintained absolute, unblinking dignity. ”Hello, Florence. It’s a chocolate and sawdust exfoliant. Very exclusive. You can’t buy it in stores.”

”I can see why,” Florence laughed, setting her bag of sandwiches down on a nearby folding chair. She walked over to the edge of the pipe and peered inside, wrinkling her nose. ”Good lord, Daniel, what are you doing to this poor man? It looks like a septic tank exploded.”

”It’s movie magic, Flo,” Daniel said, walking over and kissing her cheek, then leaning over to kiss Margot as she joined them. ”I’m glad you guys made it. I wasn’t sure if you’d be awake. You both got in late last night.”

”We finally have breathing space in our schedules,” Margot sighed happily, leaning against Daniel’s side. ”I am officially done sleeping in a double-wide trailer in the desert. Florence is done pretending to like fashion journalists in Milan. We have absolutely nothing to do for the next three days except bother you at work.”

Margot looked at Cillian, wincing slightly in sympathy. ”You really have to crawl through that?”

”Five hundred yards of it, according to the script,” Cillian said stoically. ”Though Daniel assures me we are only shooting fifty feet of it today. I suppose I should be grateful.”

”He’s going to owe you a massive bonus for putting up with this,” Margot told Cillian, glaring playfully at Daniel. ”If he doesn’t buy you a very nice car after this shoot, you should call your union rep.”

”I don’t want a car,” Cillian said flatly. ”I want a long, silent vacation in a place where nobody asks me to interact with baked goods for at least a few months. I don’t think I’d be able to eat my favourite muffins anymore.”

The sound of footsteps echoing on the concrete drew their attention. Marcus was walking rapidly across the soundstage. He was wearing his usual sharp suit, but he had a strange, strained expression on his face. He looked like he was trying very, very hard not to laugh.

He walked up to the group, his eyes flicking to the fiberglass pipe, then to Cillian’s bare chest, and finally to the brown sludge dripping off Dante’s wooden paddle.

Marcus pressed his lips together, took a deep breath, and looked at Daniel.

”I have an industry update,” Marcus said, his voice slightly higher than usual as he fought down a smile. ”But I feel like I’m interrupting a very important plumbing emergency.”

”Go ahead, Marcus,” Daniel said, taking one of the sandwiches from the bag Florence had brought. ”What’s going on in the real world?”

Marcus pulled his tablet out from under his arm. ”You remember how Amazon filed the preliminary paperwork to launch a hostile takeover of Walt Disney Studios?”

”Hard to forget,” Tom said, grabbing a sandwich for himself. ”The Disney board was basically writing their own obituaries. What happened? Did the sale go through?”

Marcus finally let the laugh escape. He shook his head, looking down at his tablet.

”It didn’t just not go through,” Marcus said, grinning widely. ”It hit a massive, jagged, federal brick wall at two hundred miles an hour. The FTC and the Department of Justice officially filed an injunction at nine o’clock this morning to block the acquisition entirely.”

Tom stopped chewing his sandwich. ”An injunction? Already?”

”They didn’t mess around,” Marcus nodded. ”The DOJ cited severe antitrust violations. They argued that a tech monopoly with a dominant retail and streaming infrastructure cannot swallow a legacy studio and its distribution networks without irrevocably damaging the competitive market. They basically dragged Amazon’s executive board into a brutal, highly public Congressional hearing about monopolies.”

Margot raised her eyebrows. ”So Amazon is backing off?”

”Amazon is currently bleeding millions of dollars a day trying to assemble a legal team to fight the federal government,” Marcus corrected. ”Which means Disney is now stuck in absolute, agonizing legal limbo. They can’t restructure because they are technically under an acquisition bid, but the bid is frozen by a federal judge. They are bleeding money on corporate lawyers, their stock is completely flatlined, and they can’t move forward or backward.”

Tom slowly lowered his sandwich. He looked at Daniel.

Daniel was just casually unwrapping his Italian sub, looking completely unbothered.

”Dan,” Tom said quietly, a tone of profound realization dawning in his voice. ”When the Amazon bid was announced, I literally begged you to trigger a proxy fight. I told you we should buy them. You told me no because you didn’t want to deal with the regulatory nightmare.”

”I remember the conversation,” Daniel said, taking a bite of his sandwich.

”You’re a genius,” Tom stated plainly. ”If we had tried to buy them as a white knight, the DOJ would be hauling us into federal court right now instead of Amazon. We would be spending our production budgets on antitrust lawyers in Washington.”

Daniel chewed his food slowly, swallowed, and shrugged.

”I didn’t predict the FTC injunction, Tom,” Daniel said honestly, wiping his mouth with a napkin. ”I’m not a psychic. I just really, really didn’t want to do the paperwork. Corporate acquisitions take years. They require thousands of hours of meetings with bankers who don’t care about movies. I’d rather be here, watching Cillian crawl through fake poop.”

Florence burst out laughing, leaning her head against Daniel’s shoulder. ”The great Daniel Miller, visionary studio head. Avoids federal indictments purely out of laziness.”

”I prefer the term ’creative focus’,” Daniel corrected her with a smile.

”Well, your creative focus saved us a multi-billion-dollar legal headache,” Marcus chuckled, putting his tablet away. ”Disney is going to be paralyzed for at least two years while this plays out in court. They aren’t a threat anymore. They’re a cautionary tale. I’ll let you guys get back to the mud bath. Good luck in the pipe, Cillian.”

”Thank you, Marcus,” Cillian said dryly. ”Your moral support is overwhelming.”

Marcus walked away, heading back toward the executive offices. Daniel finished his sandwich, tossed the wrapper into a nearby trash can, and clapped his hands together.

”Alright, playtime is over,” Daniel announced, his voice shifting into the authoritative, focused tone of the director. ”Bob, let’s get the lighting locked for the interior tracking shot. Dante, make sure the sludge is evenly distributed so Cillian doesn’t get friction burns on his knees.”

Florence and Margot stepped back, moving their chairs out of the way of the camera crew. They knew how to be invisible on a set. They sat quietly, watching the chaotic, beautiful machinery of a film production grind into gear.

The next two hours were grueling.

Cillian Murphy climbed into the fiberglass pipe. He had to drag himself forward using his elbows and knees, the thick, chocolate-and-sawdust mixture coating his skin, matting his hair, and filling the air with a cloying, heavy sweetness that made everyone slightly nauseous.

Bob Elswit was tracking alongside the cut-away section of the pipe, the camera capturing the claustrophobic, suffocating reality of the escape.

Daniel sat at the monitors, completely silent, watching Cillian’s face.

Cillian wasn’t acting like a man escaping. He was acting like a man who was already dead, simply waiting for the earth to spit him out. The physical exhaustion on his face was real. The sludge was heavy, making every movement a monumental effort. He kept his eyes fixed dead ahead, his breathing ragged and shallow.

”Keep going, Cillian,” Daniel murmured into his headset, even though Cillian couldn’t hear him. ”Almost there. Push.”

On the fourth take, Cillian dragged himself to the end of the constructed pipe and collapsed, resting his forehead against the fiberglass edge, chest heaving.

”Cut,” Daniel called out.

The crew immediately moved in. Two prop assistants handed Cillian heavy towels, helping him wipe the worst of the sludge out of his eyes.

”That was perfect,” Daniel said, walking over to the end of the pipe. ”The claustrophobia is translating beautifully. Go take a hot shower, Cillian. We have an hour to reset for the final shot. Get clean, and then we’re going to make you dirty all over again.”

Cillian just nodded weakly, wrapping a towel around his shoulders and trudging toward the cast trailers outside the soundstage.

An hour later, the mood on Stage 4 had shifted entirely.

The comedy of Dante’s chocolate recipe and the casual banter of the lunch break were gone. The crew moved with a quiet, focused reverence. Everyone knew what was about to happen.

They were setting up the final shot of the day.

More importantly, it was the final shot of the entire production.

At the far end of the soundstage, the special effects team had constructed a massive, shallow concrete basin filled with a few inches of muddy water. Above the basin, suspended from the high ceiling grid, was a sprawling network of PVC pipes fitted with high-pressure sprinkler heads.

It was the rain rig.

Bob Elswit had set up massive, high-intensity strobe lights behind a series of dark diffusion frames to simulate lightning. The camera was mounted on a low-angle crane, designed to push in tight and then sweep up into the air.

Daniel was standing next to the camera, wearing a heavy waterproof jacket. The water in the rain rig wasn’t heated. It was room temperature, which meant it was going to feel freezing cold the second it hit bare skin.

Cillian walked back onto the set. He had showered, but he was back in a fresh pair of gray trousers, his skin pale in the harsh lighting. The makeup department quickly moved in, applying a thin layer of the fake sludge to his chest, arms, and face, making it look like he had just emerged from the drainage pipe.

He walked over to the concrete basin and stepped into the shallow, muddy water. He looked up at the sprinkler heads hanging thirty feet above him.

”Ready?” Daniel asked, keeping his voice quiet.

”I’m ready,” Cillian nodded, shaking his arms out, getting his heart rate up.

Daniel walked back to the monitors. Florence and Margot were standing a few feet behind him, completely silent, watching the set. Tom was standing next to the script supervisor, holding his breath.

”Quiet on the floor!” the AD shouted. ”This is the final shot of the picture. Lock it down!”

The red warning light above the soundstage doors flashed on.

”Roll camera,” Daniel said.

”Camera rolling,” Bob replied.

Daniel looked at the special effects coordinator. ”Hit the rain.”

The coordinator pulled a heavy metal lever on his control board.

Instantly, a torrential, deafening downpour of water unleashed from the ceiling grid. The sound was incredible, a heavy, violent roar of water smashing against the concrete basin.

Cillian flinched instantly as the cold water hit his bare skin. He was kneeling in the mud, his hands sinking into the water.

Daniel leaned into his headset. ”Hit the lightning.”

Bob Elswit hit a button on his lighting console. A massive, brilliant flash of blue-white light exploded across the soundstage, illuminating the falling rain in stark, jagged relief, followed immediately by a second, rolling flash.

”Action,” Daniel said.

On the monitor, it didn’t look like a soundstage in Burbank. It looked like a dark, isolated field in Maine in 1966.

Cillian Murphy pushed himself up from his knees. The water pounded against his head, plastering his hair to his skull, washing the dark sludge off his shoulders and chest.

He didn’t just stand up. He moved like a man shedding a physical weight. He reached down, grabbed the collar of his ruined prison shirt that was tied around his waist, and ripped it away.

The camera crane pushed in low, catching the water bouncing off the mud.

Cillian threw his head back. He threw his arms up toward the ceiling, his hands spread wide, opening his chest to the freezing, punishing rain.

Bob hit the lightning strobe again.

The flash caught Cillian’s face. His eyes were closed. His mouth was open in a silent, primal scream of absolute, visceral catharsis. The pain, the twenty years of confinement, the suffocating crawl through the pipe—it was all washing away into the mud.

He wasn’t Andy Dufresne the quiet banker anymore. He was just a man who was finally, undeniably free.

Daniel watched the monitor. He didn’t call cut. He let the camera roll. He let Cillian hold the pose, the freezing water pounding against him, the lightning flashing in irregular, violent bursts.

Ten seconds passed. Fifteen seconds.

The emotion in the room was palpable. Even the grip crew, hardened veterans who had seen thousands of setups, were staring at the basin in absolute silence.

Finally, Daniel reached up and took his headset off.

”Cut,” Daniel called out, his voice loud and clear over the sound of the falling water.

The special effects coordinator killed the rain rig. The torrential downpour sputtered and stopped, leaving only the sound of water dripping off the lighting grid into the concrete basin.

Cillian lowered his arms, breathing heavily, shivering as the cold air hit his wet skin.

Daniel walked out from behind the monitors, grabbing a massive, dry towel from a PA. He walked straight into the muddy basin, his boots splashing in the water, and wrapped the towel tightly around Cillian’s shoulders.

”That’s it,” Daniel said softly, pulling Cillian into a quick, solid embrace. ”We got it.”

Daniel turned around to face the crew. He looked at the hundreds of exhausted, hardworking people standing in the dim light of the soundstage.

”Ladies and gentlemen,” Daniel announced, a wide, genuine smile breaking across his face. ”That is a series wrap on Cillian Murphy. And that is a series wrap on principal photography for The Shawshank Redemption.”

For a split second, there was total silence.

Then, the soundstage erupted.

The crew broke into massive, sustained applause. The grips whistled, the camera department cheered, and Tom let out a loud whoop of relief from video village. Florence and Margot were clapping loudly, smiling brightly at the center of the stage.

Cillian pulled the towel tighter around his neck, looking out at the cheering crew. A small, genuine, deeply tired smile touched his lips. He raised a hand in acknowledgment, bowing his head slightly in thanks.

It was over. The freezing mornings in Ohio, the suffocating heat of the roof set, the absurd arguments over maggots, and the chocolate-scented pipes—it was all captured on thirty-five-millimeter film, securely locked in metal canisters.

Daniel walked back toward video village, his boots leaving wet footprints on the concrete.

Tom met him halfway, holding his hand up for a high-five. Daniel slapped his hand, laughing as Tom pulled him in for a rough hug.

”We did it, Dan,” Tom said, stepping back. ”We actually survived a period drama on a Daniel Miller set.”

”The easy part is over,” Daniel reminded him, though he couldn’t stop smiling. ”Now I have to go sit in a dark room with an editor for three months and figure out how to put it all together.”

”That’s tomorrow’s problem,” Margot said, walking over and looping her arm through Daniel’s, ignoring the fact that his jacket was damp. ”Tonight, you are coming home, taking a very long shower, and drinking a very expensive bottle of wine.”

”I think I can manage that,” Daniel agreed.

He looked back at the set one last time. The work lights were flicking back on, washing away the dramatic shadows. The crew was already beginning the massive task of striking the sets, tearing down the prison walls that had felt so permanent just an hour ago.

The machine was shutting down. The story was told.

Daniel turned his back on the empty soundstage and walked out into the warm California afternoon, ready to go home.
