The Maker: Hollywood

The master bedroom of the Bel Air estate was entirely peaceful at 3:55 AM. The temperature was perfectly regulated, the heavy blackout curtains blocked out the ambient glow of the Los Angeles basin, and the only sound was the soft, rhythmic breathing of Daniel, Margot, and Florence tangled together in the massive king-sized bed.

Daniel was in a deep stage of REM sleep. He had spent the last several months managing the post-production and theatrical release of his prison drama, enjoying a relatively normal, human schedule. His body was rested. His mind was clear.

At exactly 4:00 AM, the heavy oak door to the bedroom flew open with a violent crash.

The overhead lights snapped on, blindingly bright and completely unforgiving.

A heavy, industrial-grade Bluetooth speaker hit the hardwood floor, instantly blasting a chaotic, ear-shattering track of heavy metal music that vibrated the glass in the windowpanes.

Standing at the foot of the bed, wearing a drenched cutoff t-shirt and holding a clipboard, was David Goggins.

Daniel shot up out of the blankets, his heart hammering against his ribs, his brain scrambling to figure out if there was a home invasion, an earthquake, or a fire.

Beside him, Margot let out a sharp gasp, sitting up and pulling the duvet to her chin, blinking rapidly against the harsh light. Florence didn’t even sit up. She just groaned, grabbed a heavy feathered pillow, and shoved it aggressively over her head to block out the noise.

Goggins walked over to the nightstand, reached out, and slammed a hand down on the speaker to pause the music. The sudden silence was almost as deafening as the metal.

”Get up, Hollywood,” Goggins said. His voice was a low, terrifying rasp that didn’t require any volume to completely command the room.

Daniel rubbed his face with both hands, trying to clear the sleep from his eyes. He looked at the digital clock on the nightstand. He looked back at Goggins.

”David,” Daniel said, his voice thick with sleep. ”How did you even get past the front gate?”

”Your producer gave me the access codes,” Goggins said, crossing his massive arms over his chest. ”Tom called me yesterday. He said you have a costume fitting in three weeks and you’ve been eating pad thai and garlic naan.”

Daniel let out a long, exhausted sigh. Tom was a dead man.

Daniel hadn’t really let himself go. After the terrifying health scare a few years ago that had forced him to reevaluate his entire life and step back from the brink of exhaustion, he had built a physical foundation out of granite. He still maintained the body of a super soldier, a literal Greek god physique that made him the most sought-after leading man in the industry. He still ate his dry chicken breasts, steamed broccoli, and plain salads for ninety percent of his meals.

But when the studio work got crazy, he occasionally slipped. He had ordered a few pizzas during late-night editing sessions with Benny. He had taken Margot and Florence out for some heavy Indian food to celebrate a box office milestone. He was human.

To Goggins, being human was a failure of discipline.

”I’ve been maintaining my baseline, David,” Daniel defended himself, throwing the blankets off and swinging his legs over the side of the bed. ”I haven’t missed a single workout in the home gym.”

”Your baseline is a joke,” Goggins replied instantly, not a single trace of humor on his face. ”Your baseline is for guys who want to look good in a tailored suit on a red carpet. You don’t have time to look good in a suit. You have to put a shield on your arm and look like a guy who can punch a hole through a tank. Tom said we are going to war. So we are going to war.”

Margot peeked over the edge of the duvet, looking at Goggins, then looking at Daniel. She couldn’t help the small, highly amused smile that crept onto her face.

”Well,” Margot whispered, patting Daniel gently on the bare shoulder. ”Have fun carrying boats, honey.”

Underneath the other pillow, Florence gave a muffled, sleepy thumbs-up.

”Traitors,” Daniel muttered. He stood up, grabbed a pair of gym shorts from the chair, and walked into the massive walk-in closet to change.

Ten minutes later, Daniel was standing in the freezing pre-dawn air of the Bel Air driveway. He was wearing a forty-pound weighted vest. Goggins was wearing one too, though he looked like he had already run ten miles before arriving at the house.

”We are doing fourteen miles through the hills,” Goggins announced, adjusting the thick canvas straps on his vest. ”And every time you think about that pizza you ate last Thursday, we are going to sprint a steep grade.”

”I don’t even remember what kind of pizza it was,” Daniel lied, shivering slightly in the cold morning air.

”Your hamstrings remember,” Goggins shot back. ”Let’s go.”

For the next two hours, Daniel was put through absolute hell. The hills of Bel Air were unforgiving, steep, and winding. His lungs burned, his calves screamed, and the heavy vest dug violently into his shoulders with every step. But he didn’t quit. He couldn’t. He had built this cinematic universe, and he had cast himself as its moral and physical center. Captain America wasn’t just a role on a call sheet; it was a physical standard he had to meet to make the audience believe.

By the time the sun finally broke over the Los Angeles skyline, casting a warm orange glow across the sleeping city, Daniel was lying flat on his back on his own driveway, completely drenched in sweat, staring up at the clear sky.

Goggins was standing over him, barely breathing heavy, holding a digital stopwatch.

”Not terrible,” Goggins admitted quietly, clicking the timer off. ”You kept the pace. But we’re shaving three minutes off that time by next week. Eat your dry chicken, Hollywood. I’ll be back tomorrow.”

Goggins didn’t wait for a goodbye. He turned around and jogged down the street, disappearing into the morning light.

Daniel lay on the concrete for another five minutes before finally peeling himself off the ground. The physical pain was sharp, but the mental clarity was exactly what he needed. The quiet, prestigious months of the prison drama were officially over. The machine was turning back on.

That evening, Daniel found himself sitting in a private, dimly lit corner booth at the Sunset Marquis.

The restaurant was a legendary sanctuary for high-profile industry people, offering complete privacy, impeccable service, and a strict ban on cameras. The ambient noise was a low, comfortable hum of clinking glasses and hushed conversations.

Daniel was wearing a dark, tailored button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, nursing a glass of sparkling water with lime. He was deeply exhausted from the morning run, his muscles aching in quiet protest, but he hid it perfectly. He sat relaxed, projecting absolute ease.

A shadow fell over the table.

Daniel looked up.

Scarlett Johansson slipped into the leather booth across from him. She looked effortlessly stunning, wearing a sleek black blazer over a silk camisole. She carried an air of sharp, practiced confidence, her eyes immediately locking onto his.

”Daniel,” Scarlett said, her voice carrying that signature, slightly raspy warmth. She set her small clutch on the table. ”So the man behind the curtain actually exists outside of the Burbank lot. I was beginning to think you were a myth.”

”I get let out of my office every once in a while,” Daniel smiled, signaling the waiter to bring her a drink. ”It’s good to finally sit down with you, Scarlett. Properly, this time.”

”Is it?” Scarlett asked, leaning forward slightly, resting her chin on her hand. A very deliberate, playful smirk crossed her face.

She had already been introduced into the universe. Jon Favreau had directed her brilliant debut as Natasha Romanoff in the Iron Man sequel. But Daniel had been buried in pre-production for his own projects at the time, leaving the day-to-day set visits to Tom and Marcus. This was the first time they were actually sitting across from each other, one-on-one.

”I have to admit, Daniel,” Scarlett continued, her tone openly flirtatious, tracing the rim of her water glass with a manicured finger. ”I was starting to take it personally. I shoot an entire movie for your studio, I put on the leather suit, I beat up the bad guys in the hallway, and the studio head doesn’t even come down to the set to say hello? I was beginning to think I just wasn’t your type.”

She let the sentence hang in the air, her eyes dropping briefly to his chest before meeting his gaze again.

Everyone in the industry knew Daniel’s situation. He was openly, happily married to two of the most beautiful women in the world. He was a man who clearly didn’t shy away from romance, and sitting across from him now, looking at the sheer, undeniable physical presence he carried, Scarlett wasn’t going to pretend she wasn’t interested.

Daniel chuckled softly, completely unbothered by the direct approach. He leaned back in his side of the booth, matching her gaze with calm confidence.

”I don’t think anyone with eyes could ever say you aren’t their type, Scarlett,” Daniel said smoothly, his voice low and entirely sincere. ”It had absolutely nothing to do with personal preference. I can promise you that. Jon had a great handle on the sequel, and I try not to hover over my directors when they’re working.”

”Very respectful of you,” she teased, her smile widening. ”But Jon isn’t directing the team-up movie, is he?”

”No,” Daniel said, taking a sip of his water. ”He laid a great foundation for you. You established the character perfectly. But now the board is set, and the pieces are moving together. I need to take the reins for this one.”

The waiter arrived, dropping off a classic martini for Scarlett, and quickly vanished again.

Scarlett took a sip, her eyes never leaving Daniel’s. ”So you’re directing the ensemble.”

”I am,” Daniel nodded, reaching into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a thick, sealed script and slid it across the table. ”The movie is called The Avengers.”

Scarlett looked at the script, then back up at Daniel. ”An ensemble of that size. So I’d be sharing screen time with Robert, Chris, and Hugh’s monster?”

Daniel raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised by the casual name-drops. ”I’m actually a little amused you know the Marvel slate that well. I didn’t peg you for someone who kept up with the comic book movies outside of your own contract.”

Scarlett leaned forward across the table. The playful energy shifted into something much more deliberate and alluring. She let her gaze trail over his face, taking in the sharp jawline and the relaxed, commanding posture, her voice dropping into a soft, seductive register.

”I don’t just know Marvel, Daniel,” Scarlett murmured, holding his eyes. ”I’ve watched absolutely everything that has the name ’Daniel Miller’ in the credits.”

Daniel held her gaze for a long moment, a slow, appreciative smile spreading across his face. She was incredibly sharp, entirely self-aware, and knew exactly how to own a room.

”Well,” Daniel said quietly. ”Then you know I don’t miss.”

”I know,” Scarlett agreed, reaching out and resting her hand flat on top of the script. She tapped her nails lightly against the heavy cardstock cover. ”So, I’m the spy. Standing in a room with gods and billionaires.”

”You’re the anchor,” Daniel corrected gently, shifting into the pitch. ”She has more red in her ledger than any of the heroes, and she is entirely unapologetic about it. She doesn’t have a magic hammer or a suit of armor. I need someone who can stand in that room and make them look like absolute amateurs purely through competence and sheer willpower. You did it in Jon’s movie, but in this one, you’re the glue that holds the team together when everything falls apart.”

Scarlett looked at the script, a slow, brilliant smile taking over her face. She loved the character, but hearing him pitch it with such absolute conviction sealed the deal.

”When you put it like that, how could a girl possibly say no to you?” Scarlett said, picking up her martini glass. ”I’ll have my reps call your office in the morning to sort out the boring paperwork. But the answer is yes.”

”I’m glad to hear it,” Daniel said, genuinely relieved.

Scarlett raised her glass in a slight toast. ”To gods, monsters, and finally getting the studio head’s attention.”

”To the Avengers,” Daniel replied, tapping his water glass against hers.

They spent the next hour just talking. The conversation drifted away from the script and into normal, grounded territory. Scarlett was incredibly funny and sharp. She didn’t treat Daniel like a studio head, and he didn’t treat her like a commodity. By the time they parted ways at the valet stand, the foundation for what would become a massive working relationship was solidly poured.

The next afternoon, the executive conference room at Miller Studios in Burbank felt like the war room of a military bunker preparing for a global invasion.

The massive whiteboards lining the walls were completely covered in scheduling blocks, location scouting reports, and production breakdowns. The sheer scale of the information was dizzying.

Daniel stood at the head of the long oak table, a cup of black coffee in his hand. His legs were still burning from the morning run with Goggins, but he pushed the pain out of his mind.

Marcus was sitting halfway down the table, staring at a laptop, typing rapidly. As the head of operations for Daniel’s privately owned studio, Marcus didn’t have to ask a board of directors for permission to spend money. Daniel funded everything out of his own pocket. Marcus was just the guy who had to figure out how to physically move four hundred million dollars’ worth of liquid assets, payroll, and insurance bonds around the globe without losing a single receipt.

Tom was standing near the whiteboard, holding a red dry-erase marker like a weapon.

”Alright,” Tom said, drawing a heavy circle around a date block in the middle of the board. ”The table read is locked for three weeks from today. We have the entire primary cast flying in. RDJ is coming off a press tour in Europe, but his team confirmed he will be here. Hemsworth is already in town doing stunt prep. Hugh Dancy is arriving on Tuesday to do some facial capture baseline tests for the VFX team so they can map the Hulk transformations properly.”

”And Scarlett?” Marcus asked without looking up from his screen.

”Her contract was finalized this morning,” Tom grinned, looking over at Daniel. ”Whatever you said to her at the Sunset Marquis worked. Her legal team didn’t even push back on the multi-picture option. They just signed the master agreement.”

”She knows a good hand when she sees one,” Daniel said, taking a sip of his coffee. ”What’s the status on the supporting roster?”

”All locked,” Tom confirmed, checking his notes. ”Jeremy Renner is cleared for Hawkeye. We have him doing intensive archery training with an Olympic coach down in Long Beach. Rachel McAdams is scheduled for her block of scenes as Pepper Potts during the second month of principal photography, so it won’t conflict with her other shoot. Sam Jackson is ready to go. And Tom Hiddleston is basically living at the gym right now trying to make sure he looks menacing standing next to Hemsworth.”

Daniel nodded. The roster was perfect. It was a murderer’s row of talent. The pieces he had been meticulously placing on the board over the last few years were finally coming together.

Tom walked over to the table and dropped his dry-erase marker. He leaned heavily against the back of an empty leather chair, looking directly at Daniel.

”Dan, the money isn’t the part that worries me,” Tom said quietly, his voice dropping the usual sarcastic producer tone. ”It’s the logistics on the floor.”

”What logistics?” Daniel asked.

”You,” Tom said simply, pointing a finger at him. ”You are directing a four-hundred-million-dollar movie. You are going to have sixty speaking parts, a thousand extras, and massive practical explosions happening in the middle of downtown Cleveland. That alone is enough to put most veteran directors in a psychiatric ward.”

Tom paused, letting the reality sink in.

”But you aren’t just sitting in a canvas chair looking at a monitor, Dan,” Tom continued, his eyes wide with the sheer insanity of the concept. ”You have to put the suit on. You have to stand in front of the camera, holding a heavy metal shield, acting opposite Robert Downey Jr., who is going to be improvising half his lines at a million miles an hour. You have to trade dialogue with Hemsworth. You have to direct them, manage their massive egos, frame the shot, and give a leading-man performance all at the exact same time without breaking character.”

Marcus nodded slowly in agreement, finally looking up from his laptop. ”He has a point, Dan. It’s a dual burden. No one has ever tried to direct an ensemble of this magnitude while simultaneously playing the tactical leader of the group on camera.”

Daniel looked at the massive whiteboard. He looked at the names written in dry-erase marker. Stark. Thor. Banner. Romanoff. Barton. Rogers.

He felt the dull ache in his legs from the morning run with Goggins. He felt the immense, crushing pressure of the production schedule resting squarely on his shoulders.

Most men would have cracked. Most men would have immediately hired a co-director or pawned off the action sequences to a second unit to preserve their own sanity.

Daniel set his coffee cup down on the heavy oak table. He placed both hands flat on the wood, leaning forward slightly. A slow, incredibly confident smile broke across his face.

”Tom,” Daniel said, his voice calm, steady, and vibrating with absolute conviction. ”I know exactly who these characters are. I know how they talk, I know how they fight, and I know how they break. I don’t need to sit behind a monitor to know if a take is good. I’ll feel it in the room.”

Daniel looked between his two oldest friends and partners.

”I built this universe,” Daniel said simply. ”I’m not handing the keys to anyone else for the finale. Book the soundstages. Finalize the catering. Tell the VFX houses to spool up the servers.”

Daniel grabbed his script binder off the table and tucked it securely under his arm.

”We had our fun in the prison,” Daniel announced, heading for the door. ”We’re going back to war.”
