The Maker: Hollywood

The drive north over the Sepulveda Pass was usually a crawl by seven in the morning, but Daniel had cleared the crest before the valley sun began to bake the scrub brush on the hillsides.

The San Fernando Valley lot was Miller Studios’ heavy machinery yard. While the Burbank property had the legacy history, the executive bungalows, and the manicured lawns, the Valley facility was pure industrial scale. It sat on sixty flat acres of concrete and gravel, ringed by high razor-wire fences, dominated by four monolithic, hangar-style soundstages that had been built specifically to house productions too large to fit anywhere else in Los Angeles County.

Daniel pulled his truck through the security gate at Stage 12.

The soundproof hydraulic partition wall that normally separated Stage 12 from Stage 14—a six-inch-thick steel barrier the size of a billboard—had been completely retracted into the ceiling. The combined interior was vast, echoing, and smelled of cut pine, damp gypsum plaster, welding slag, and the sharp bite of high-gloss floor varnish.

Standing in the center of the concrete expanse with a white hard hat shoved back on his grey hair was Rick Carter. He had three rolled-up blueprints tucked under his arm and was holding a chipped ceramic mug filled with lukewarm black coffee.

”Morning,” Rick called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal ceiling sixty feet above them. ”Watch your step by the pit. The trenching crew just finished the conduit lines for the floor heat.”

Daniel walked over, his work boots kicking up a faint puff of grey drywall dust from the floor. ”How’s the deflection on the subfloor?”

”Solid as a bank vault,” Rick said, unrolling one of the blueprints across a wooden gang-box. ”We laid down two layers of three-quarter-inch marine-grade plywood over a sleeper grid of Douglas fir. Then we’re laying the actual parquet on top. French herringbone pattern, solid white oak, four inches wide. We’re sanding it down three times and putting four coats of low-sheen poly on it. It’ll look like mirror-polished marble to the lens, but when the dancers hit the waltz, their leather soles will catch. Nobody’s sliding into the orchestra pit.”

Daniel stepped onto the edge of the framed platform. He bounced lightly on the balls of his feet, testing the flex. It didn’t budge. There was no hollow boom, no spring. It felt like walking onto the ground floor of an eighteenth-century chateau.

”Where do the pillars go?” Daniel asked, looking up into the shadows of the high lighting grid.

”Right along these chalk lines,” Rick pointed with a pencil. ”Twenty-four fluted Corinthian columns. We’re casting them out of high-density fiberglass resin with real crushed limestone mixed into the topcoat. To the eye—even if you walk right up and scrape your fingernails against it—it looks and feels like cold, chiseled French limestone. But each one weighs only four hundred pounds instead of four tons, so my riggers can hang the steel tie-backs without cracking the ceiling trusses.”

Rick turned, gesturing toward the back wall of Stage 14, where a massive, ninety-foot green screen cyclorama stretched from floor to ceiling.

”That’s where we cut over to the digital,” Rick explained, his tone practical, entirely devoid of artistic pretension. ”The ballroom floor, the lower gallery, the fireplaces, the grand staircase, and the window arches are all physical timber, plaster, and gold leaf. Real candelabras with real beeswax tapers wired for low-voltage flicker bulbs so we don’t asphyxiate the crew with carbon monoxide.

”Then, the second the camera looks through the glass, we hand it to the visual effects team. Outside those arched windows, it’s all frozen mountain cliffs, black spruce forests, and the blizzard. When the Beast roars and the glass rattles, the digital team drives the snow drifts against the panes. You get the real warmth inside, and the cold isolation outside.”

Daniel walked the perimeter of the platform, checking the sightlines from what would be the camera crane’s primary track position.

”The staircase,” Daniel said, pointing toward the eastern riser. ”Is the radius wide enough for the gown?”

”Sixteen feet across at the landing,” Rick answered immediately. ”She can wear an eight-foot hoop skirt with a six-foot train and have three feet of clearance on either side. We tested it with a wire mock-up on Monday.”

”Good,” Daniel said, nodding slowly. ”Keep the crew on double shifts. I want the plasterers finished by Friday next week so the scenic painters can start aging the gold leaf. The room needs to look like it was breathtaking two hundred years ago, and then neglected for ten.”

”We’ll have the dust down by Tuesday,” Rick smiled, tapping his hard hat. ”Go hear the music, Dan. We’ve got the timber handled.”

---

By ten o’clock, the valley heat was beginning to haze the horizon, and Daniel was back over the hill, pulling onto the private studio lot in Burbank.

Tucked behind the main soundstages, past the editorial suites and the wardrobe trailers, was a secluded row of low, single-story stucco cottages built in the 1930s. Bungalow 4 sat at the very end of the lane, shaded by a massive, sprawling jacaranda tree that was currently dropping small purple flowers onto the brick walkway.

As Daniel walked up the three flagstone steps, the sound of a piano drifted through the open screen door.

It was a complex, cascading run of arpeggios that resolved into a slow, haunting, minor-key progression—rich, melancholic, and completely effortless.

Daniel pulled the screen door open and stepped into the cool, wood-paneled living room.

The room had been cleared of standard office furniture. In the center of the hardwood floor sat a magnificent, high-gloss black Steinway Model D concert grand piano, its lid propped open on the long stick.

Sitting on the leather bench with his back to the door was Alan Menken.

He was seventy-seven years old, wearing a loose, comfortable grey cardigan over an open-collared white shirt, his reading glasses perched right on the tip of his nose. Resting on the flat wooden shelf above the keys was a short tumbler holding three fingers of amber bourbon, alongside a stack of blank manuscript paper covered in scribbled pencil notation.

Menken didn’t stop playing. His fingers drifted into a quiet, warm cadence that hung in the quiet room for three beats before he lifted his hands, letting the sustain pedal catch the dying vibrations.

He turned his head over his shoulder, peering over his glasses with a sharp, bright twinkle in his hazel eyes.

”You walk like a director,” Menken said, his voice warm, scratchy, and unmistakably New York. ”Heavy boots. Always trying to get somewhere before the light changes.”

Daniel smiled, closing the wooden door behind him. ”Morning, Alan. Did the piano make the trip from New York in one piece?”

”The action is like butter,” Menken said, turning fully around on the bench, picking up his glass and taking a modest sip. ”The bass strings on this thing have an actual growl to them. Perfect for an ugly monster.”

Daniel walked over, leaning against the curve of the piano’s polished rim. ”How’s the bourbon?”

”Good enough to make me forget how old I am for an hour,” Menken chuckled. He reached for a pencil, tapping it against the manuscript paper. ”I read your treatment on the flight out from JFK. Twice.”

”And?”

Menken set the pencil down, looking directly up at Daniel, his expression turning focused, professional, and deeply engaged.

”You’re not treating it like a cartoon,” Menken said simply. ”That’s what I like. When you do a fairy tale on a soundstage, ninety percent of the people in this town try to make it bouncy. They think because there’s music, everyone has to smile and wink at the camera like they’re doing a pantomime in a shopping mall. But the story isn’t that bouncy to begin with. The story is about two people who feel completely grotesque to the world around them—one because she thinks too much for the village she was born in, and the other because his soul actually rotted until his skin matched it.”

”The Beast has to hurt, Alan,” Daniel said softly, looking down at the black and white keys. ”If the audience doesn’t feel the physical and emotional agony of him being trapped in that body, the romance at the end feels like Stockholm syndrome. It might feel cheap.”

”Agreed,” Menken said, his hands immediately falling back to the keyboard.

He struck a low, rolling C-minor chord with his left hand, adding a sharp, aching dissonance with his right thumb.

”This is what I was working on when you walked in,” Menken murmured, his fingers moving slowly, carving out a melody that was raw, heavy, and full of wounded pride. ”The end of Act Two. Belle has left. The rose is down to its last two petals. He’s standing on the high parapet watching her horse disappear into the blizzard, knowing he let her go because he loves her, and knowing that letting her go means he dies in the dark as a beast.”

Menken’s voice was thin and raspy, but as he sang the rough melody line, the emotional architecture of the entire film seemed to snap into sharp focus:

”I was the one who had it all... I was the master of my fate... and now the shadows start to fall, upon the beast within the gate...”

The final chord lingered in the wooden room, low and devastating, vibrating against the soundboard of the Steinway until it faded into absolute silence.

Menken looked up at Daniel.

”That’s the solo,” Daniel said quietly, his voice level. ”That’s the spine of the second act.”

”It’s called Evermore,” Menken said, picking up his pencil and making a quick mark on the margin of the sheet music. ”It needs a baritone who can roar, but who can pull the voice down into a whisper without it sounding like he’s running out of breath. Who do you have for him?”

”Dan Stevens,” Daniel said.

Menken tilted his head, considering the name for three seconds, then nodded slowly with genuine approval. ”Dan. Good. He has that English stage discipline. He knows how to support the breath from the diaphragm, and he doesn’t push the high notes. He lets them resonate in the chest. He’ll handle it.”

The front door chimed—two soft, polite raps on the screen frame.

Daniel turned.

Standing on the porch, looking through the wire mesh with a wide, bright smile, was Anne Hathaway.

She wore a simple, knee-length shirt-dress of pale blue linen, flat leather sandals, and had her dark brown hair tied back into a loose, low ponytail. She carried a leather-bound binder under her arm and a paper coffee cup in her hand. There was no entourage, no personal assistant hovering on the path, and no sunglasses.

”Am I interrupting the maestro?” Anne asked, her voice clear, musical, and entirely relaxed.

”Come in, Annie,” Daniel said, stepping over to push the screen door open for her.

Anne stepped into the bungalow, immediately setting her coffee down on the side table and walking straight over to Menken. ”Alan. It is an absolute honor.”

Menken stood up from the bench with a courtly, old-school bow, taking her hand and kissing the back of her knuckles. ”The honor is entirely mine, my dear. I’ve heard you sing. You have actual pitch. In this town, that makes you a unicorn.”

Anne laughed, a rich, full-throated sound that filled the room. She turned to Daniel, giving him a warm, brief hug. ”Daniel. It’s good to see you. You look like you are actually getting some sun these days.”

”Four weeks of doing absolutely nothing,” Daniel smiled. ”Sit down. Let’s talk about Belle.”

Anne pulled an upholstered armchair over to the curve of the piano, setting her binder on her knees.

”I read the script draft you sent over on Sunday night,” Anne said, her large, expressive brown eyes locking onto Daniel’s face. ”The village sequence in the opening. You cut almost twenty percent of the whimsical town gossip.”

”The village isn’t whimsical, Anne,” Daniel said, leaning his hip against the edge of the Steinway. ”The village is small, rigid, and poor. It’s eighteenth-century provincial France. People work twelve hours a day in the mud, they go to church, they follow the rules, and they don’t like anyone who questions the order of things. Belle isn’t an eccentric girl who just likes daydreaming about fairy tales; she’s an educated woman whose intelligence is an active threat to the people around her. When she walks down that street with a book, they don’t look at her with amusement. They look at her with suspicion.”

”And that makes her loneliness real,” Anne nodded, leaning forward, her fingers tapping the leather binder. ”It’s not just teenage angst. She genuinely feels like she’s suffocating in that valley. That’s why the Beast doesn’t terrify her the way he terrifies the others. When she gets to the castle, she doesn’t see a monster; she sees someone else who doesn’t fit into the neat little boxes the world built.”

”Can you hit the modulation at the end of the opening number?” Menken asked, his hands hovering over the keys. ”The transition from the town square to the hillside? It goes up a minor third, and it requires real vocal stamina. No studio pitch correction, Anne. Daniel and I don’t use it.”

Anne didn’t even hesitate. She set her binder on the floor, stood up straight, relaxed her shoulders, and placed one hand on the edge of the piano lid.

”Give me an E-flat, Alan,” she said calmly.

Menken struck the chord.

Anne took a single, deep, quiet breath from her stomach, opened her throat, and let the voice ring out.

It was astonishing.

Her voice wasn’t thin or manufactured. It was rich, rounded, and carried that luminous, crystal-clear bell tone that filled every square inch of the wooden bungalow without a microphone. She sang eight bars of the theme—pure, unadorned, hitting the high modulation with an effortless, soaring warmth that vibrated the glass panes of the windows.

When she finished, the room was dead silent for two full seconds.

Menken slowly took his glasses off, looked at Daniel, and let out a soft, low chuckle.

”Well,” Menken said dryly, turning back to the keys. ”That saves us about three weeks in the recording booth.”

Anne blushed slightly, laughing as she brushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear. ”I’ve been practicing in the car on the 405 for three days. My steering wheel is thoroughly sick of that key change.”

”You’re Belle, Anne,” Daniel said, his voice quiet, final, and steady. ”The role is yours.”

”Thank you, Daniel,” she said, her eyes shining with real, unvarnished gratitude. ”I won’t let you down.”

Before Daniel could speak again, the sound of heavy, energetic footsteps pounded up the exterior wooden stairs, followed by three loud, rhythmic thuds on the front door that shook the screen in its track.

”Anybody order a ridiculously handsome hunter?!” a booming, resonant Australian voice roared through the wood.

The door swung open, and Hugh Jackman strode into the bungalow like he was walking onto the stage of an arena.

He was six-foot-two, broad-shouldered, wearing a tight black henley that showed off forearms like cured timber, dark jeans, and boots that had seen real miles. He had a massive grin plastered across his bearded face, his eyes crinkling with infectious, uncontainable energy.

”Annie!” Hugh bellowed, stepping across the room in two strides, scooping Anne up off the floor in a massive bear hug that had her laughing breathlessly. ”Look at you! You look like royalty already!”

He set her down, turned to Menken with an exaggerated theatrical bow, and took the composer’s hand in a crushing grip. ”Alan. The legend. Tell me you brought the tavern song. Tell me I get to make an absolute idiot of myself in six-eight time.”

”Hugh,” Menken laughed, wincing slightly as he pulled his fingers back from the grip. ”If you break my playing hand, there is no tavern song.”

”Fair point, mate! Very fair point!” Hugh spun around, locking his gaze on Daniel, his grin widening until it practically split his face. ”Daniel. Look at this room. You’re actually doing it. We’re doing a bloody musical.”

”Sit down, Hugh,” Daniel chuckled, gesturing toward the sofa. ”Before you knock the floor lamps over.”

”I can’t sit, mate, I’ve got too much coffee in me,” Hugh said, pacing along the edge of the Persian rug, his hands gesturing expansively. ”Listen, I read the scene in the tavern. The whole bit where Gaston is brooding in the corner because Belle told him to shove it, and then LeFou starts pumping his tires. It’s hilarious, but Daniel—what you did with the transition at the end of the second act? That’s where the teeth are.”

”Talk to me,” Daniel said, crossing his arms.

”Most people would play Gaston like a clown, right?” Hugh said, stopping in the center of the room, his posture shifting.

In a fraction of a second, the goofy, charming Australian disappeared.

His shoulders broadened. His chin lifted. His dark eyes hardened into something cold, arrogant, and dangerously magnetic.

”Gaston isn’t a clown to the villagers,” Hugh said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the smooth, chilling authority of a natural demagogue. ”He’s their captain. He’s the war hero who kept the wolves from their sheep. When he smiles, they feel safe. Which means when he decides that the Beast is an abomination that has to be slaughtered, he doesn’t have to force them into a lynch mob. He just sings to their fear, and they follow him like sheep to the slaughterhouse. He has to start as the man everyone wants to be, so that when he turns into a rabid dog at the end, it’s actually terrifying.”

Daniel looked at him, feeling that sharp, electric satisfaction that came when an actor completely understood the assignment without needing a single directorial note.

”That’s exactly it, Hugh,” Daniel said. ”If the audience laughs at Gaston for two hours, the final fight on the castle roof has no stakes. They have to believe you could actually kill the Beast with your bare hands.”

”Oh, I’m going to try, mate,” Hugh grinned, the villainous sneer melting back into his sunny, boisterous self. ”I’ve already told my trainer to add forty pounds to my deadlift. If I’m wearing a red leather hunting coat, I want to look like I could bench-press a horse.”

”Don’t get too wide,” Anne teased from the armchair. ”You still have to fit through the tavern doors.”

”I’ll kick the doors off the hinges, Annie! It’s in the character notes!”

The front door opened again, this time with absolute quiet.

Dan Stevens slipped into the room.

He was dressed in a well-tailored navy linen blazer over a dark grey crewneck, slim trousers, and dark brown suede boots. He was tall, lean, with sharp, aristocratic English features, striking pale blue eyes, and an aura of quiet, observant reserve that stood in stark contrast to Hugh’s booming physical presence.

He held a battered, dog-eared copy of the script in his hand, marked with dozens of yellow sticky notes.

”I apologize if I’m late,” Dan Stevens said, his voice low, refined, and carrying that smooth, cultured London baritone. ”The traffic on the pass was somewhat biblical.”

”You’re right on time, Dan,” Daniel said, stepping forward to shake his hand. ”Come meet the room.”

Stevens greeted Anne with a warm, familiar kiss on both cheeks, shook Menken’s hand with quiet reverence, and traded a solid, respectful nod with Hugh.

”Dan,” Daniel said, turning to him. ”We were just talking about the castle.”

Stevens sat down on the piano bench beside Menken, resting his elbows on his knees, his face serious.

”I wanted to ask you about the motion capture, Daniel,” Stevens said, his voice measured. ”I spoke to the visual effects supervisors yesterday. They mentioned the digital asset for the Beast is going to be driven by head-mounted camera rigs and inertial suits.”

”It is,” Daniel confirmed. ”The facial animation—the jaw, the lip curls, the snarls, the movement around the eyes—that has to be digital, because human bone structure simply cannot support the mass of the horns and the muzzle we’ve designed. If we use foam latex, you look like a guy in a Halloween mask. You can’t emote.”

”Right,” Stevens nodded. ”My concern was the weight on set. When I’m in the room with Anne—when we’re doing the ballroom waltz, or when we’re shouting at each other in the West Wing—if I’m just wearing a grey Lycra suit with little ping-pong balls on my joints, she doesn’t have anything real to react to. I’m just an actor in pajamas.”

”You won’t be in pajamas, Dan,” Daniel said, a faint, dry smirk touching his lips.

Stevens looked up, curious.

”Rick Carter’s shop has already built your rig,” Daniel explained. ”You’re going to be wearing a forty-pound weighted ballistic vest beneath the capture suit to force your center of gravity down toward your hips. You’re going to be on four-inch articulated carbon-fiber leg stilts that alter the mechanics of your knees and ankles, forcing you to walk with a digitigrade, predatory gait. And your forearms will have weighted steel gauntlets.”

Anne’s eyes widened slightly. ”You’re putting him on stilts for the waltz?”

”He has to be eight feet tall, Anne,” Daniel said, looking at her. ”When you lean your head against his chest on that ballroom floor, you need to feel forty pounds of real mass. You need to smell the leather. When he moves, the air in the room needs to shift. Dan will have the physical burden of the creature on his shoulders for every single setup, and the computers will simply paint the fur and the horns over the truth of his performance.”

Dan Stevens sat in silence for four seconds, his pale blue eyes staring at the floorboards, processing the sheer physical demands of what Daniel had just described.

Then, slowly, a wide, deeply satisfied smile broke across his aristocratic face.

”Brilliant,” Stevens murmured, his voice rich and steady. ”Absolute bloody brilliance. If my calves don’t burn by the end of the day, I’m not doing the work. Let’s build the monster.”

Menken let out a loud, delighted laugh, slamming both hands down on the keys of the Steinway with a triumphant, ringing major chord.

”That’s the cast!” Menken cheered, his face glowing. ”God above, Daniel, you brought me an actual cast of actors! Not influencers, not pop stars who need four audio engineers to find middle C—real bloody actors!”

The room dissolved into easy, unhurried laughter.

For the next two hours, the bungalow became a workshop.

There was no formal rehearsal structure, no rigid studio schedule. They simply worked.

Menken played through the melodies, calling out key signatures and tempos. Anne stood by the curve of the piano, marking her breath control on her sheet music, her voice blending with Menken’s raspy guidance. Hugh stood in the center of the Persian rug, belting out the tavern chorus with such ferocious, comedic baritone swagger that the studio security guard on the bicycle outside stopped on the gravel path just to listen through the open window. And Dan Stevens sat on the edge of the sofa, running through the dialogue of the West Wing with Anne, testing how low his voice could drop before the aristocratic English accent turned into an animalistic snarl.

By two in the afternoon, the work was done.

The sheet music was gathered into binders. The coffee cups were thrown into the wastebasket.

Daniel stood on the porch of the bungalow, watching the three of them walk down the brick path together toward the production gate—Hugh with his arm casually slung around Stevens’ shoulders, making some loud joke about Australian rugby, and Anne walking beside them, laughing warmly under the shade of the jacaranda tree.

Daniel stepped back inside, shook Menken’s hand, and walked out to his truck.

The engine rumbled to life, the air conditioning blasting against the dry valley heat as he turned out of the studio gate, heading back toward the pass.

---

By five o’clock, the traffic on Sunset Boulevard had settled into its familiar, crawling evening rhythm, but Daniel cut through the back residential streets of Bel Air, winding his way up into the cool, eucalyptus-scented shadows of the hills.

The black wrought-iron gates of the estate slid open smoothly as his truck approached the sensor.

The driveway was quiet. The afternoon sun was casting long, amber rays through the tall Italian cypress trees that lined the stone motor court.

Daniel parked the truck near the garage, killed the engine, and stepped down onto the warm cobblestones.

He stretched his back, feeling the long, satisfying ache of a twelve-hour day behind his shoulder blades. Between the early morning concrete inspection in the San Fernando Valley, the technical negotiations with Rick Carter, and five hours of vocal work in Bungalow 4, his ears were still ringing slightly with piano chords and baritone melodies.

He walked up the three flagstone steps to the heavy oak front door, pushed it open, and stepped into the cool, silent foyer.

The house was strangely quiet.

Usually, by five in the afternoon, the place was alive with ambient noise. Margot would have the news or an Australian radio broadcast playing from the kitchen speakers while she prepped dinner; Florence would be padding around barefoot, either on a loud phone call with her sister in London or humming some pop song from the living room couch; and Scarlett would be reading scripts on the sunroom lounger with an iced espresso sweating on the side table.

Today, there was no radio. There were no voices. He wondered if they were all busy with some new projects without even telling him.

The air smelled of fresh jasmine from the courtyard garden, the faint, clean scent of polished beeswax, and something sweet baking in the lower kitchen oven—vanilla, butter, and browned sugar.

”Hello?” Daniel called out, his voice carrying down the wide, limestone hallway toward the back of the house.

No answer.

Daniel kicked off his work boots by the entry bench, walking in his socks across the cool, wide-plank oak floorboards.

He walked through the archway into the main living room.

The room was bathed in the soft, warm golden hour light pouring through the floor-to-ceiling glass sliders that looked out over the infinity pool and the canyon below.

Sitting together on the long, deep-seated charcoal linen sectional sofa were Margot, Florence, and Scarlett.

They weren’t on their phones. They weren’t reading scripts.

They were sitting side-by-side, perfectly still, looking toward the hallway archway as Daniel walked in.

Margot sat in the middle, wearing a soft, oversized cream-colored cashmere sweater that slipped slightly off one bare shoulder, her legs tucked beneath her, her hands resting quietly in her lap. Her blue eyes were wide, bright, and carried a strange, luminous, intensely focused stillness that Daniel had rarely seen in her.

To her left, Florence was curled up against the armrest, wearing a simple heather-grey tank top and loose cotton trousers, her chin resting on her drawn-up knees. She wasn’t fidgeting. She wasn’t eating grapes. Her face was flushed with a soft, radiant pink, and her lips were pressed together in an expression that hovered right on the edge of a trembling, breathless smile.

And on the right sat Scarlett.

She wore a simple, sleeveless black ribbed dress that fell to her mid-calf, her dark red hair swept loosely over one shoulder, completely bare of makeup. She had her hands folded loosely over her lower stomach, her fingers lightly intertwined.

Her hazel-green eyes locked onto Daniel the second his foot crossed the threshold.

Daniel stopped in the center of the Persian rug, ten feet from the edge of the sofa.

He looked at Margot. Then at Florence. Then at Scarlett.

The silence in the room wasn’t tense. It wasn’t the heavy, suffocating silence of bad news or studio crises.

It was thick, electric, and completely suspended—the kind of silence that fills a cathedral right before the choir draws its first breath.

”What’s going on?” Daniel asked, his voice low, calm, and grounded, his eyes scanning the three of them. ”Did something happen?”

Margot didn’t speak. A tiny, breathless laugh escaped her lips, her eyes glistening with sudden, unshed tears as she reached across the cushions, taking Scarlett’s left hand and squeezing it tightly.

Florence let out a shaky, wet exhale, resting her forehead against Margot’s shoulder for half a second before looking back up at Daniel, her eyes shining with pure, overwhelming light.

Scarlett didn’t look away from him.

Her chest rose and fell in a slow, deep, remarkably steady rhythm.

She slowly unfolded her hands from her lap.

Sitting on the low glass coffee table directly in front of her, resting on top of a folded linen napkin, was a small, white plastic stick with a pale blue cap.

Next to it lay a sealed, high-resolution ultrasound printout from a private medical clinic in Beverly Hills—a small, dark, grainy rectangular image showing a tiny, flickering white curve nestled deep inside the grey shadows of a womb.

Daniel looked down at the coffee table.

His eyes tracked the white stick.

Two distinct, bold, dark pink lines sat side-by-side in the small digital display window.

The room seemed to drop ten degrees in volume. The gentle splash of the infinity pool outside the glass sliders ceased to exist. The hum of the refrigerator in the far kitchen vanished into absolute, vacuum-sealed quiet.

Scarlett leaned forward slightly, resting her forearms on her bare knees, her voice coming out soft, husky, and completely stripped of every layer of defense she had ever carried into a room.

”Daniel,” Scarlett whispered, her eyes holding his with absolute, unwavering clarity.

”I’m pregnant.”
