The Maker: Hollywood

The Sunday afternoon sun was pouring through the massive, floor-to-ceiling windows of the Bel Air estate, casting long, warm rectangles of light across the hardwood floor of the living room. The house was quiet, save for the faint hum of the central air conditioning and the occasional rustle of paper.

Daniel was sprawled out on one end of the massive, L-shaped linen sectional couch. He was wearing faded gray sweatpants and a plain white t-shirt, completely barefoot. In his hands, he held a brightly highlighted, slightly crumpled script.

Sitting on the floor, leaning her back against the base of the couch, was Margot. She had her legs crossed, a pen tucked behind her ear, and her own copy of the script resting on the glass coffee table in front of her. She was wearing an oversized hoodie and had her blonde hair tied up in a messy, haphazard bun.

She was currently trying to figure out how to sound like she was from rural Texas.

”Okay, let’s take it from the top of page forty-two,” Margot said, her voice dropping into a slightly gravelly, southern drawl. She cleared her throat, trying to find the resonance in her chest. ”I ain’t asking for a handout, Mickey. I’m asking for what’s owed. There’s a difference, and if you don’t know it by now, you’re dumber than you look.”

Daniel looked down at his pages. He was reading the part of Mickey, a corrupt pawnshop owner.

”You got a lot of nerve walking in here, Cassidy,” Daniel read, keeping his voice deadpan, not even attempting an accent. ”I could have the cops here in two minutes.”

”Call ’em,” Margot fired back, her drawl thickening, her eyes narrowing as she glared at the coffee table. ”See how fast they care about a deadbeat like you when I tell ’em what’s in the basement.”

”And... scene,” a voice interrupted from the doorway.

Daniel and Margot both looked up.

Florence was leaning against the doorframe of the kitchen, holding a large ceramic bowl of Cap’n Crunch. She was wearing silk pajama bottoms and a worn-out band t-shirt, chewing a mouthful of cereal with a highly critical expression on her face.

”What?” Margot asked, dropping the accent immediately.

”I love you,” Florence said, walking into the living room and taking a seat on the opposite end of the sectional. She brought the spoon to her mouth, chewing thoughtfully before pointing it at Margot. ”But you sound like a chain-smoking waitress from New Jersey who got incredibly lost on her way to Houston.”

Margot threw her pen at Florence. It bounced harmlessly off the couch cushion. ”Shut up, Flo. I’m trying to find the cadence. It’s a specific regional dialect. It’s not supposed to sound like a cartoon cowboy.”

”It doesn’t sound like a cartoon cowboy,” Florence agreed, scooping up more cereal. ”It sounds like you’re trying to do a mafia movie but you accidentally watched Dallas right before the audition. Why are you dropping your G’s so hard? You’re saying ’askin’ instead of ’asking’, but you’re hitting the vowels like you’re from Brooklyn.”

Daniel laughed quietly, setting his script down on his chest. He made it a point to never interfere when his wives critiqued each other’s acting. They were both incredibly talented, Oscar-caliber actresses, and their process was entirely their own. He was just the guy reading the other lines in front of them.

”It’s a low-budget indie thriller,” Margot defended herself, though she was smiling now, pulling her knees up to her chest. ”Cassidy is a drifter. She’s supposed to sound rough around the edges. She’s been living out of her car for two years. I don’t want her to sound polished.”

”Rough around the edges is fine,” Florence said, setting her bowl on her lap. ”But you’re pushing the gravel in your throat too hard. You’re trying to sound tough instead of just being tough. Cassidy knows she has the upper hand in that pawn shop. She knows what’s in the basement. She doesn’t need to put on a tough voice. She just needs to speak quietly. The threat is in the words, not the volume.”

Margot paused, thinking about it. She looked down at the script on the coffee table. She read the lines in her head again.

”A quieter threat,” Margot murmured.

”Yeah,” Florence nodded. ”Let the writing do the heavy lifting. If you walk into a room and you know you’re holding the winning hand, you don’t yell. You don’t put on a show. You just state the facts. Try it again. Just your normal speaking voice, but flatten it out. Slower. Don’t push the accent, just let the vowels stretch a little.”

Margot looked up at Daniel. ”Read Mickey again.”

Daniel picked his script back up. ”You got a lot of nerve walking in here, Cassidy. I could have the cops here in two minutes.”

Margot didn’t glare at the coffee table this time. She looked casually at the wall, her expression completely blank, almost bored.

”Call ’em,” Margot said. Her voice was much quieter now, the southern lilt barely there, just a faint softening of the consonants. It sounded incredibly natural, and completely terrifying. ”See how fast they care about a deadbeat like you when I tell ’em what’s in the basement.”

Daniel raised his eyebrows, genuinely impressed. ”Yeah. That’s the one.”

Florence took another bite of her cereal, looking incredibly smug. ”See? I’m a genius. You should fire your acting coach and just pay me in expensive wine.”

”Don’t let it go to your head,” Margot laughed, picking her pen back up and making a quick note in the margins of her script. ”But thank you. That actually feels a lot better in my mouth. Less forced.”

”Why did you take this role anyway?” Florence asked, tucking her legs up underneath her on the couch. ”It’s a two-million-dollar budget shooting in the middle of New Mexico. You’re going to be living in a double-wide trailer for a month eating bad catering. You literally just got offered the lead in that massive Paramount romantic comedy.”

”Because the romantic comedy was boring,” Margot groaned, rolling her eyes. ”It was the same script I’ve read fifty times. Girl works at a magazine, girl meets guy who works in finance, they hate each other, they get stuck in an elevator, they fall in love. I could sleepwalk through it. This indie script is filthy. It’s gritty. My character gets shot in the leg in the second act and has to stitch herself up in a motel bathroom. I want to do something that scares me a little.”

Daniel smiled, looking at Margot with a deep, quiet affection. It was one of the things he loved most about her. She had all the fame and leverage in the world, she could easily coast on hundred-million-dollar studio pictures for the rest of her life, but she genuinely cared about the work.

”I think it’s a great choice,” Daniel said. ”The director is young, right? First feature?”

”Yeah,” Margot nodded. ”He did a couple of short films that went to Moondance last year. He’s hungry. He’s going to work his ass off to make this look good. And honestly, it’s nice to step away from the massive studio machine for a minute. No offense to your massive studio machine, obviously.”

”None taken,” Daniel laughed. ”My massive studio machine is currently building a 1940s prison on a soundstage in Burbank. Speaking of which, I need to get out of these sweatpants. I have a production meeting at noon, and we’re shooting the roof-tarring scene tomorrow. I need to make sure Dante hasn’t accidentally caused a structural collapse trying to make the set look any older.”

”Have fun in prison, honey,” Florence grinned, finishing her cereal and setting the bowl on the coffee table. ”Bring me back a license plate.”

”I’ll see what I can do,” Daniel said, tossing his script onto the couch and standing up. He stretched his arms over his head, his joints popping slightly.

He left the living room, heading for the stairs. Behind him, he could hear Margot and Florence already arguing about European football, completely abandoning the script rehearsal. Stephen Walker and Cillian Murphy were coming over for dinner later that week, and Florence was heavily prepping her arguments about the Premier League just to mess with Cillian.

It was normal. It was chaotic. It was home.

---

The next morning, the environment on Stage 4 in Burbank was anything but normal.

It was incredibly, suffocatingly hot.

To properly simulate the blistering, oppressive heat of an outdoor prison roof in the middle of summer, Bob Elswit had ordered the lighting department to bring in massive, industrial-grade tungsten lamps. The lights were rigged in a grid above the set, beating down on the fake tar paper and concrete blocks that Dante Ferretti had constructed.

The heat radiating off the lamps was genuine. Within five minutes of standing on the set, the actors were already sweating through their faded prison uniforms.

Daniel stood near the edge of the constructed roof set, wearing a t-shirt and holding a bottle of water. He was huddled up with Cillian Murphy and Michael Shannon.

The scene they were about to shoot was one of the most iconic and pivotal moments in the entire script. It was the moment Andy Dufresne overhears Captain Hadley complaining about the taxes on an inheritance, and Andy decides to step out of line, risking his life to offer financial advice in exchange for cold beers for his co-workers.

It was a massive shift in the power dynamic of the prison.

”Alright,” Daniel said, keeping his voice low so the background actors wouldn’t get distracted. ”Let’s talk about the physical space here. Michael, when Cillian steps up to you, he is breaking every unwritten rule in this place. You have a loaded gun on your hip and a baton in your hand. He is a convicted murderer. If you throw him off this roof, nobody is going to ask any questions. You hold his life completely in your hands.”

Michael Shannon nodded slowly, wiping a bead of sweat off his forehead. He was wearing the heavy, dark uniform of the prison guards, complete with a leather utility belt. He looked terrifyingly large standing next to Cillian.

”I’ve been thinking about the baton,” Shannon said, his voice dropping into that flat, deadpan register he used for the character. He unclipped the heavy wooden club from his belt. ”If I grip it tight, if I white-knuckle it, I look angry. Like I’m defending myself.”

Shannon adjusted his grip, holding the baton loosely, almost casually, letting it dangle from his fingers.

”Hadley isn’t angry,” Shannon continued, looking at Daniel. ”He’s just mean. And he’s bored. When Andy walks up to him, he isn’t threatened. He’s just annoyed that a piece of garbage is talking to him. I think I should hold the baton loose. When I grab him, it shouldn’t look like a fight. It should look like I’m picking up a stray dog by the scruff of its neck.”

”I love that,” Daniel said immediately. ”It shows total control. There’s no effort in the violence. It’s just casual cruelty.”

Daniel turned to Cillian. ”And Andy knows that. Andy knows he’s a stray dog in this moment. How are you playing the approach?”

Cillian was already in the zone. He was standing perfectly still, his shoulders slightly hunched, making himself look physically smaller than he actually was. The sweat on his face made his pale blue eyes look incredibly sharp.

”I shouldn’t look him in the eye,” Cillian said quietly. ”Not at first. If I make eye contact, it’s a challenge. An animal challenge. Hadley will beat me to death on instinct. I have to look at the ground. I look at his boots. I look at the mop bucket. I keep my head down, and I make my voice as non-threatening as possible.”

Cillian looked up, demonstrating the shift. ”I only look him in the eye when I say the word ’IRS’. Because that’s the hook. That’s the one thing he’s more afraid of than he is angry at me.”

”That’s the pivot,” Daniel agreed, nodding. ”The tension has to be excruciating. The audience needs to think Hadley is going to throw you over the edge right up until you deliver the line about the tax loophole. Alright, let’s run the blocking. Places, everyone.”

The actors moved to their marks. Daniel stepped off the raised roof set and walked over to the video village monitors, taking his seat next to Tom.

”Quiet on set!” the first assistant director yelled out.

The low hum of the stage went completely silent. The heat from the tungsten lights pressed down on the crew.

”Roll sound.”

”Sound speed.”

”Camera is rolling.”

”Action,” Daniel said.

On the monitors, Daniel watched the scene unfold. Cillian Murphy was holding a heavy bucket of liquid tar, pretending to spread it over the roof with a mop. In the background, Michael Shannon was complaining loudly to another guard about his brother dying and leaving him thirty-five thousand dollars, and how the government was going to tax him into oblivion.

Cillian stopped mopping. He stood perfectly still for a second. The internal calculation was visible entirely through the micro-expressions on his face. He was weighing his own life against the chance to prove his worth to the guards.

Cillian set the mop down. He began to walk toward Shannon.

”Step aside, Andy,” Morgan Freeman’s character muttered in the background, trying to warn him.

Cillian ignored him. He walked slowly, his eyes glued to the fake tar paper on the ground. He stopped a few feet away from Michael Shannon.

”Mr. Hadley,” Cillian said. His voice was quiet, almost a whisper, completely devoid of threat. ”Do you trust your wife?”

Michael Shannon stopped talking. He slowly turned his head. The look of pure, unadulterated contempt on his face was chilling. He didn’t say a word. He just casually lifted his hand, grabbed Cillian by the collar of his uniform, and violently hauled him forward.

Shannon dragged Cillian to the very edge of the constructed roof set. He pushed him backward, bending Cillian over the low parapet.

The camera pushed in close, capturing the sheer physical disparity between the two men. Shannon held the wooden baton loosely in his other hand, tapping it against his own leg.

”What did you say to me, you little piece of shit?” Shannon asked, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. ”Are you trying to be funny? Because if you are, I will push you off this roof and tell the warden you slipped.”

Cillian was bent backward over the edge, his feet barely touching the ground. But his face didn’t show panic. The frantic, terrified breathing was there, but his eyes were locked dead onto Shannon’s. The shift had happened.

”I asked if you trust your wife,” Cillian gasped out, the words precise and calculated. ”Because if you do, you can keep that thirty-five thousand. All of it. Tax-free. The IRS allows a one-time gift to a spouse. It’s a loophole.”

Shannon froze. The baton stopped tapping against his leg. The sheer, predatory violence in his eyes was suddenly replaced by a flicker of greedy confusion.

The power dynamic shifted, silently and completely, right there on the edge of the roof. Andy Dufresne was no longer a prisoner. He was a banker again.

”Cut!” Daniel called out, his voice cutting through the heavy silence of the soundstage. ”That was unbelievable. That was incredible, you two. Holy shit.”

The tension on the set evaporated instantly. Michael Shannon hauled Cillian back up onto his feet, patting him on the shoulder.

”You good?” Shannon asked, dropping the terrifying persona and returning to his normal, slightly awkward self.

”I’m good,” Cillian smiled, rubbing his neck where the uniform collar had dug in. ”Though I think you actually lifted me completely off the ground for a second there, Michael.”

”Sorry,” Shannon chuckled, walking over to grab a bottle of water from a PA. ”Adrenaline.”

Tom looked over at Daniel from his chair at video village. ”I haven’t breathed in two minutes. If the rest of the movie plays like that, we’re going to give the audience a collective heart attack.”

”That’s the goal,” Daniel smiled, making a note on his script. ”Alright, let’s reset for the wide shot! We need to get the beers on the roof!”

---

Three hours later, Daniel left the sweltering heat of Stage 4 and stepped out into the cool, late-afternoon air of Burbank. He climbed into his car and drove off the lot, heading west toward the Hollywood Hills.

He had a very different kind of meeting scheduled for the late afternoon.

Forty minutes later, Daniel pulled through the private security gates of a beautiful, sprawling estate hidden in the hills. He parked his car and walked up to the front door of John Williams’ private recording studio.

The door was unlocked. Daniel stepped inside.

The studio was a massive, acoustically perfect room paneled in rich, warm cherry wood. Bookshelves lined the walls, overflowing with classical scores, music theory textbooks, and framed photographs of John conducting orchestras all over the world. In the center of the room sat a magnificent, nine-foot Steinway concert grand piano.

John Williams was sitting at the piano bench, wearing a comfortable sweater and slacks, peering at a piece of blank sheet music through his glasses. He had a pencil in his right hand and was lightly tapping a single key with his left.

”John,” Daniel announced his presence gently, not wanting to startle the maestro.

John stopped tapping the key and turned around, a warm, grandfatherly smile lighting up his face.

”Daniel,” John said, standing up and walking over to shake his hand. ”Come in, come in. It’s so good to see you. I have tea brewing in the back. Chamomile or Earl Grey?”

”Earl Grey would be fantastic, thank you,” Daniel said, taking off his jacket and draping it over a leather armchair.

John vanished into a small kitchenette attached to the studio and returned a minute later carrying a silver tray with two steaming porcelain cups. He set the tray down on a small coffee table near the piano and handed a cup to Daniel.

They sat down, the quiet atmosphere of the room a stark contrast to the chaotic noise of the movie set.

”So,” John said, taking a sip of his tea and looking at Daniel over the rim of his glasses. ”I read the script. The Shawshank Redemption.”

”What did you think?” Daniel asked, leaning back in his chair.

”It is a masterpiece of endurance, is what I think,” John said thoughtfully. ”It is incredibly heavy. When you told me you were doing a prison film, I assumed it would be loud. Sirens, shouting, violence. But reading the pages... it’s remarkably quiet. The violence happens in the margins. The real story is just the passage of time.”

”Exactly,” Daniel nodded. ”Which is why I came to you. You did the final mix for Harry Potter, and you also did the heavy brass and electric guitars for Treasure Planet. Both of those scores were massive. They drove the action. But this movie... this movie has no magic. It has no spaceships. It’s just concrete, rust, and men wearing gray uniforms. The score can’t overpower the silence.”

John set his teacup down and walked over to the Steinway. He sat on the bench, resting his hands lightly on the keys.

”You are absolutely right,” John said, staring at the black and white ivory. ”If I bring in a massive brass section or a swelling string orchestra, it will feel melodramatic. It will tell the audience how to feel, and this story demands that the audience feel the isolation on their own.”

John played a single, low note on the left side of the keyboard. It resonated deeply, a mournful, heavy sound that seemed to vibrate in the floorboards.

”The prison,” John murmured. ”Shawshank is a monster, but it is a slow monster. It crushes men over decades. I think the voice of the prison should be a cello. A solitary, deep cello. Not a section. Just one instrument, playing long, sustained, mournful notes. It represents the walls. The confinement.”

Daniel closed his eyes, listening to the resonance of the piano key fading away, imagining a cello playing it. ”Yes. That feels right. It sounds like institutionalization.”

”But Andy Dufresne is not institutionalized,” John said, his fingers moving to the right side of the keyboard.

John began to play a very light, delicate, almost hesitant melody. It was simple, just a few notes dancing around each other, but it was incredibly beautiful. It sounded like a drop of water falling into a still pond.

”Hope is a quiet thing, Daniel,” John said softly, still playing the melody. ”It isn’t a trumpet fanfare. When a man is locked in a dark room for twenty years, hope is just a whisper. A memory of the wind. I think Andy’s theme should be piano. Nimble, light, unbroken. It moves above the heavy cello. The cello tries to drag it down, but the piano just keeps dancing above it, out of reach.”

Daniel opened his eyes. He stared at the legendary composer, genuinely moved by the simplicity and the brilliance of the concept.

John Williams wasn’t just writing music. He was translating human psychology into sound waves.

”The cello and the piano,” Daniel said quietly. ”The walls and the mind.”

”Precisely,” John smiled, stopping the melody and turning to face Daniel. ”The score will be minimalist. Very restrained. Most of the movie will play in silence, so that when the music finally arrives, it feels like a breath of fresh air. And then, at the very end... when Andy finally escapes, and Red meets him on that beach in Zihuatanejo...”

John’s hands hovered over the keys for a second. Then, he brought them down, playing a swelling, incredibly warm, major-key progression that filled the entire room with light.

”Then,” John said, looking over his shoulder at Daniel, his eyes twinkling, ”we bring in the orchestra. Because they are finally free.”

Daniel felt a physical chill run down his arms. It was perfect. It was exactly what the movie needed to elevate it from a dark drama into a timeless piece of cinema.

”I don’t know how you do it, John,” Daniel laughed, shaking his head. ”You read a script, and you just know exactly what it sounds like.”

”I just listen to what the story is asking for,” John said modestly, closing the lid over the piano keys. ”When do you need the first temp tracks?”

”We lock the picture in about two months,” Daniel said. ”Take your time. There’s no rush on this one.”

They spent another hour drinking tea and talking about the technical logistics of recording a smaller, more intimate orchestra. By the time Daniel left the studio, the sun had completely set over the Hollywood Hills, and the city lights were beginning to glow in the basin below.

---

It was just past eleven o’clock at night.

The neon sign above ”Mel’s Drive-In” off Ventura Boulevard buzzed with a faint, electrical crackle. Inside, the diner was mostly empty, smelling strongly of old frying oil, burnt coffee, and industrial floor cleaner. It was the kind of place that existed purely for people who worked strange hours and needed calories at midnight.

Daniel and Tom were sitting in a cracked vinyl booth near the back, looking like two guys who had just survived a shipwreck.

Tom was aggressively rubbing his lower back, wincing slightly as he shifted on the slippery vinyl. ”I swear to God, Dan, we need to upgrade the director’s chairs on set. I’ve been sitting in that canvas death trap for twelve hours a day, and I think I’ve permanently fused my L4 and L5 vertebrae.”

Daniel laughed, using a fork to cut into a massive, slightly stale slice of cherry pie sitting on the table in front of him.

”I told you to go to the chiropractor,” Daniel said, taking a bite of the pie. It was terrible, but it hit the spot perfectly. ”Or just stand up once in a while. You sit at video village like a gargoyle.”

”I can’t stand up, I’m producing,” Tom grumbled, picking up a limp french fry from his own plate and chewing on it. ”If I stand up, someone asks me a question about the budget. If I sit perfectly still and scowl at the monitor, people leave me alone.”

They didn’t care about anything else at the moment. They were just two tired guys eating diner food at midnight.

”I finally figured out the carbonara, by the way,” Daniel mentioned casually, taking another bite of pie. ”The trick is the pasta water. You have to take it off the heat before you add the cheese and the egg, otherwise, you just make scrambled eggs with noodles. Took me three tries, but Florence actually admitted it was good.”

”That is the most shocking news I’ve heard all week,” Tom said deadpan. ”I still have nightmares about that chicken piccata you tried to make us in 2022. The dorm smelled like burnt citrus for a month.”

”I was a young man,” Daniel defended himself. ”I lacked patience.”

Before Tom could roast him further, a waitress approached the booth.

She looked to be in her late twenties, wearing a standard pink diner uniform with a stained white apron. Her name tag read Chloe. She was holding a glass pot of hot coffee in one hand and a damp rag in the other.

She looked exhausted, the kind of deep, bone-weary tired that comes from working a double shift on your feet.

”More coffee for you guys?” Chloe asked, her voice flat and rehearsed.

”Yes, please,” Tom said, sliding his heavy ceramic mug toward the edge of the table. ”Fill it to the brim. It’s been a long day.”

”I hear that,” Chloe murmured, pouring the dark liquid into Tom’s mug.

She moved to Daniel’s side of the table to fill his cup. As she poured the coffee, she glanced down at his face.

She stopped pouring.

The glass pot hovered over the ceramic mug. A few drops of hot coffee splashed onto the table, but Chloe didn’t seem to notice. Her eyes went incredibly wide. She blinked, staring at Daniel, then quickly looked away, her cheeks instantly flushing a deep, panicked red.

She set the coffee pot down on the table with a loud clunk, her hands visibly shaking.

”Oh my god,” Chloe whispered, her voice completely losing its tired retail flatness. ”Oh my god, I am so sorry to bother you. I know you’re just eating... but you’re Daniel Miller.”

Tom smirked, leaning back in his booth and taking a sip of his coffee. He loved watching this happen.

Daniel smiled warmly. He didn’t look annoyed. He grabbed a napkin and casually wiped up the spilled drops of coffee, trying to put her at ease.

”I am,” Daniel said gently. ”It’s nice to meet you, Chloe. Please, don’t apologize.”

Chloe took a shaky breath, wiping her hands nervously on her apron. She looked like she was trying very hard not to completely freak out in the middle of her shift.

”I just... I have to tell you,” Chloe stammered, the words tumbling out of her mouth in a rush. ”I didn’t want to be that person, but I couldn’t just walk away. Inception is my favorite movie of all time. I know everyone probably says that to you, but it actually means a lot to me.”

”I always love hearing that,” Daniel said genuinely. ”What did you like about it?”

The question caught her off guard. She wasn’t expecting the billionaire director to actually engage her in conversation. It grounded her slightly, pulling her out of the panicked fan mode.

”I watched it with my dad,” Chloe said, her voice softening, a nostalgic smile touching her lips. ”I was in college. I drove home for the weekend, and we rented the digital copy. We watched it in the living room, and when the screen cut to black at the end... we just sat there in silence for like, two minutes. And then we stayed up until three in the morning drinking terrible coffee, just like this, standing in the kitchen debating whether the top fell over or not.”

Chloe laughed quietly, shaking her head. ”My dad passed away two years ago. But that night... standing in the kitchen arguing about dream levels... it’s one of my absolute favorite memories of him. So, thank you. Thank you for making that.”

Daniel sat perfectly still for a second. The exhaustion of the long shoot day, the noise of the studio, the massive corporate battles—they all completely vanished.

This was why he did it.

He didn’t make movies to break box office records or to inflate studio stock prices. He made movies because a story, told right, could lodge itself in a person’s heart and become a piece of their actual life. He had given this woman a memory with her father that she would carry forever. There was no award in Hollywood worth more than that.

”Chloe, thank you for telling me that,” Daniel said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. ”That means the world to me. I’m really glad you had that night with your dad. And for the record... I think the top fell over.”

Chloe’s eyes lit up. ”I knew it! My dad said he was still dreaming, but I knew he made it back to his kids.”

She wiped a quick, happy tear from her eye and reached into her apron pocket, pulling out her phone.

”I am so sorry to ask,” Chloe said, her voice slightly breathless, ”but would it be okay if I got a quick picture? The line cooks in the back are never going to believe me.”

”Of course,” Daniel smiled, sliding out of the booth and standing up.

Tom grabbed the phone from her. ”I’ll take it. You don’t want a selfie, the lighting in here makes everyone look like a zombie. Stand next to him, I’ll get a good angle.”

Chloe stood next to Daniel, beaming, throwing a peace sign up for the camera. Daniel smiled genuinely, wrapping an arm casually around her shoulder. Tom snapped a few pictures and handed the phone back to her.

”Thank you,” Chloe said, practically glowing as she looked at the screen. ”Thank you so much, Mr. Miller. I’ll let you guys finish your pie. Have a great night.”

”You too, Chloe,” Daniel said, sliding back into the booth.

Chloe walked back toward the kitchen, walking with a noticeably lighter step, immediately showing her phone to the guy working the grill.

Tom took another sip of his coffee, looking at Daniel across the table. The sarcastic, tired producer persona was gone, replaced by a quiet respect.

”That was nice,” Tom said softly.

”Yeah,” Daniel nodded, looking down at his half-eaten cherry pie. ”It really was.”

Twenty minutes later, they finished their food. Daniel asked for the check. The total came to fourteen dollars and fifty cents for the pie, the fries, and the coffee.

Daniel pulled his wallet out. He laid a twenty-dollar bill on the table to cover the check. Then, he reached back into his wallet, pulled out five crisp one-hundred-dollar bills, and slipped them under the edge of his ceramic coffee mug, making sure they were mostly hidden so nobody would swipe them before Chloe came back to clean the table.

They stood up, walked out the glass doors of the diner, and stepped into the cool, quiet Los Angeles night.

The streetlights buzzed overhead. Traffic on Ventura Boulevard was sparse.

”Get some sleep, Tom,” Daniel said, pulling his car keys out of his pocket. ”We have a big day tomorrow. We’re shooting the warden’s office sequence.”

”I’ll try,” Tom groaned, stretching his back one last time. ”See you on set, boss.”

Daniel unlocked his car and climbed inside. He started the engine, the quiet hum of the luxury vehicle isolating him from the noise of the city. He pulled out of the parking lot, heading for the hills. He felt deeply, profoundly satisfied.
