The Maker: Hollywood

The afternoon sun was warm and golden over the hills of Bel Air, cutting through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors of the master bedroom. The heavy sliding panels were pushed open, letting in the faint rustle of eucalyptus leaves and the distant, low hum of the canyon breeze.

Daniel stood by the foot of the massive king-sized bed, wearing a soft, faded black cotton t-shirt and dark jeans, methodically unpacking a battered canvas duffel bag.

It felt strange to touch regular clothes again. For nearly four solid weeks in Ohio, his daily tactile reality had been stiff ballistic Kevlar, cold harness buckles, bruised ribs, and the distinct, lingering stench of diesel smoke, sulfur, and pulverized drywall. Every single thing he owned smelled like downtown Cleveland. He pulled out a stack of workout shirts, tossed them into the laundry hamper near the closet, and started lining up his running shoes.

The bedroom door didn’t just open; it was shoved open with zero ceremony.

Margot walked in first, holding a small bowl of sliced green apples, wearing an oversized knit cream sweater over faded denim shorts. Her blonde hair was tied up in a loose knot with a pencil shoved through it to hold it in place.

Right behind her came Florence, barefoot, wearing a soft gray loungewear set, carrying two large glasses of iced water with lemon.

”Look at him,” Florence announced, walking straight over to the bed and flopping down onto the white duvet on her stomach, propping her chin on her hands. ”He survives four weeks of blowing up the Midwest, comes home to an eight-figure estate, and the first thing he does is fold socks. You are profoundly unhinged, Dan.”

”Socks don’t fold themselves, Flo,” Daniel said, setting a pair neatly on the dresser.

Margot leaned against the doorframe, chewing on a slice of apple, looking at him with an amused, knowing glint in her blue eyes. ”How are the ribs? Tom texted me three days ago saying a stunt driver clipped a taxi into your perimeter.”

”I have a bruise the size of a dinner plate on my hip, but nothing’s cracked,” Daniel replied, turning back to the duffel. ”Bob got the shot on the first pass, so it was worth the hit.”

”He always says it’s worth the hit,” Florence mumbled into the duvet, rolling onto her side and reaching up to hand him one of the glasses of ice water. ”Drink your water, Captain. You look like you haven’t seen a vegetable that wasn’t frozen in a month.”

”Thanks,” Daniel smiled, taking the glass. The cold water felt incredible against his dry throat. He took two long gulps, setting it on the nightstand, and went back to unzipping the side compartment of the bag to pull out his toiletries.

Margot didn’t move from the doorway. She tilted her head, her gaze drifting over his broad shoulders, taking in the small scuff mark along the edge of his jawline that makeup hadn’t entirely scrubbed out.

”So,” Margot said softly, her voice dropping into a casual, rhythmic cadence. ”Cleveland.”

”Cleveland,” Daniel repeated, not looking up.

”You wrapped the street stuff.”

”Wrapped it completely. East 9th Street is open back up to traffic, the city is sweeping up the fake rubble, and the practical units are on the train back to the Valley.”

”Mmhmm,” Margot took another small bite of her apple. ”And how was the Ritz?”

Daniel paused for half a second, his hand hovering over a leather shaving kit inside the bag.

He didn’t have secrets in this house. The dynamic between the three of them had been built over years of absolute, brutal honesty. From the very beginning, when Florence had bluntly cut through the tension between Daniel and Margot during the chaotic shoot of Joker, their marriage had operated on zero pretenses. They didn’t play jealous head games, they didn’t sneak around, and they certainly didn’t lie to each other about people they were attracted to.

Daniel pulled the kit out, set it on the dresser, and turned around to lean his lower back against the wood, crossing his arms over his chest.

He looked at Margot. Then he looked at Florence, who was now resting her chin on the edge of the duvet, staring up at him with unblinking, curious hazel eyes.

”The Ritz was fine,” Daniel said calmly. ”Room service was terrible, though. Scarlett had to bring her own wine.”

Margot’s eyebrows shot up. A massive, brilliant, slow grin broke across her face.

”Oooo,” Margot breathed out, letting out a soft, sharp laugh as she walked into the room, setting the bowl of apples on the nightstand. ”Took you guys long enough!”

Florence sat straight up on the bed, crossing her legs, her eyes lighting up like a kid on Christmas morning. ”Wait. Seriously? You finally did it?”

”We did,” Daniel confirmed, holding their gazes with an amused, steady expression. ”Last night. After the midnight three-way call with Peter and Guillermo. She knocked on the suite door, brought a bottle of red, and basically kicked the door shut behind her.”

”I knew it!” Florence clapped her hands together, a triumphant little smirk taking over her features. ”I told you, Margot! I told you the leather suit was going to break him!”

”The leather suit didn’t break me,” Daniel pointed out dryly. ”She was wearing a silk slip dress and a trench coat.”

Florence groaned theatrically, leaning back against the pillows. ”Oh, that’s just cheating. That is aggressive, targeted warfare. A silk slip dress in front of a hotel door? The woman has no shame, and I respect her immensely for it.”

Margot sat down on the edge of the mattress, resting her hands on her knees, shaking her head with a mixture of fond exasperation and pure delight. ”Honestly, Dan, we were starting to think we were going to have to write you an instruction manual. We literally gave you the green light months. We stood there in the wardrobe, looked at her in that Widow suit, looked at you, and basically shouted at you to make a move.”

”I was running a four-hundred-million-dollar set, Margot,” Daniel said, walking over to the foot of the bed and sitting down on the corner. ”I don’t mix business with pleasure when there are twelve hundred pounds of high explosives wired into the asphalt thirty feet away.”

”Well, you mixed it eventually,” Florence teased, leaning forward and poking him solidly in the thigh with her toe. ”How was it? On a scale of one to ten, how completely ruined is your ability to direct her next week?”

Daniel reached out, catching Florence’s foot with his hand, giving it a light, warning squeeze. ”I can direct her just fine. She’s an absolute pro. If anything, the chemistry on camera the next morning was ten times better because the tension wasn’t bottled up anymore.”

”Mmm,” Florence hummed, pulling her foot back, leaning back against the pillows with her arms crossed over her chest. She let out a small, dramatic sigh, looking down at the bedspread. ”I have to say, though... I’m a little jealous.”

Daniel paused.

He looked at Florence. Her face had shifted into a slight, exaggerated pout, her lips turned down, her eyes avoiding his.

A small, genuine flicker of concern crossed Daniel’s mind. He raised an eyebrow, his head tilting slightly. He knew how secure their relationship was, but emotions weren’t math equations. If Florence was actually feeling a sudden twinge of insecurity or territorial possessiveness, he needed to address it immediately.

”Wait,” Daniel said, his voice softening, dropping the easy banter. ”Are you actually jealous, Flo? Because if you are, why did you spend the last month pushing me toward her in the first place?”

Florence didn’t answer immediately.

Beside her, Margot looked at Daniel’s intensely serious, analytical face, and then looked at Florence.

Both women broke at the exact same second.

Margot threw her head back and let out a loud, breathless shriek of laughter, slapping the mattress with her palm. Florence burst into a wide, snorting giggle, rolling onto her stomach and burying her face in a pillow, her shoulders shaking violently.

Daniel stared at them, completely unmoving.

”Oh, God,” Margot wheezed, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye, pointing a finger at him. ”Look at your face! Look at him trying to psychoanalyze the room!”

Florence lifted her head from the pillow, her cheeks flushed pink from laughing, giving him a deeply unimpressed, playful glare.

”Don’t flatter yourself, Daniel!” Florence scoffed loudly, rolling her eyes so hard it looked painful. ”I’m not jealous of her! Why on earth would I be jealous of you having fun?”

Daniel narrowed his eyes, crossing his arms. ”Then what are you talking about?”

”I’m jealous of you!” Florence declared, throwing her hands up in the air with dramatic flair. ”I’m jealous that you got to sleep with Scarlett Johansson! Have you seen her? Have you looked at her face? Have you looked at the rest of her?”

”Seriously, Dan,” Margot chimed in, grinning from ear to ear, leaning her chin on Florence’s shoulder. ”She’s an absolute smoke show. We have seen her looking like a lethal goddess, and you get to go to Cleveland and spend the night with her in a five-star suite while Flo and I are sitting here eating takeout and watching British baking shows.”

”It’s deeply unfair,” Florence nodded solemnly, crossing her arms again. ”The distribution of wealth in this marriage is heavily skewed in your favor.”

Daniel sat at the edge of the bed, staring between his two wives for three long, silent seconds.

His brain briefly tried to process the exchange.

On one hand, he felt a wave of profound, absolute relief that there wasn’t a single ounce of real toxic jealousy, resentment, or marital friction simmering beneath the surface. His home was peaceful and safe.

On the other hand... he was pretty sure he had just been completely, casually dismissed as the lucky party who had somehow managed to punch above his weight class, despite being a literal Greek-god-physique billionaire studio head.

Daniel let out a slow, heavy breath through his nose.

”I don’t know whether to be relieved,” Daniel said, his voice entirely flat and deadpan, ”or offended.”

Margot laughed again, sliding across the duvet and wrapping her arms around his neck from behind, resting her chin on his shoulder, pressing a soft kiss to the side of his neck. ”Be relieved, darling. Offended takes too much energy, and you still have half a duffel bag to unpack.”

Florence crawled across the mattress on her knees, stopping right in front of him, reaching out to cup his jaw with both hands. She tilted his face up, inspecting him with a warm, wicked smirk.

”You’re very pretty, Daniel,” Florence patted his cheek patronizingly, speaking to him like he was a golden retriever that had just fetched a stick. ”You’re a very handsome man. We love you very much. But she’s Scarlett Johansson. You bagged an icon. Give credit where credit is due.”

Daniel couldn’t help the quiet, resigned smile that finally broke through his expression. He reached up, taking Florence by the wrists, pulling her hands away from his face. ”You two are impossible.”

”We keep you humble,” Margot murmured against his ear, squeezing him tightly. ”Otherwise you’d walk around Burbank thinking you’re an actual god instead of just playing one on camera.”

”Speaking of,” Florence sat back on her heels, her expression turning practical. ”When is she coming over?”

”When is who coming over?” Daniel asked.

”Scarlett, obviously,” Florence said, rolling her eyes again. ”You don’t think you get to keep her to yourself, do you? We gave you the green light, we let you have your little midwestern romance, but now that you’re back in LA, she’s coming to dinner. Margot and I need to have our fun too. We need to drink wine, interrogate her about what you’re actually like when you aren’t barking orders at grips, and see if she still doesn’t wanna dump you after using you for your body.”

”She’s shooting pickup scenes in the Valley all next week,” Daniel said, standing up from the bed and stretching his arms over his head, feeling the tight muscles in his shoulders release. ”Give her a few days to recover from the travel.”

”Fine,” Margot agreed, standing up as well, smoothing down her knit sweater. ”Friday night. I’ll tell the house manager to order the good steaks from the butcher in Santa Monica, and Flo can make that ridiculous chocolate tart she spent three days perfecting last month.”

”It’s an incredible tart,” Florence defended herself, scrambling off the bed and heading toward the bathroom. ”And if Scarlett doesn’t like dark chocolate, that’s an immediate dealbreaker. I don’t care how good she looks in leather.”

Daniel watched them move around the room, the easy, chaotic warmth of his home washing away the last remnants of the cold Ohio wind. He shook his head, grabbed his empty water glass, and walked out toward the kitchen.

---

On Tuesday morning, the tranquil, sun-drenched domesticity of Bel Air was left behind for the frantic, organized chaos of the Miller Studios lot in Burbank.

The main executive building was humming with activity, but the second-floor conference room looked like it had been commandeered by a pair of eccentric, subterranean warlords.

Daniel pushed open the heavy oak door, carrying a mug of black coffee.

Tom was already in the room, standing in the corner near the window, looking at the table with an expression that bordered on sheer, bewildered terror.

Across the sprawling, polished mahogany table, the neat stacks of legal notepads and studio stationery had been completely shoved aside.

Peter Jackson was standing at the far end of the room, wearing a rumpled, short-sleeved plaid button-down shirt that looked like it had been purchased from a hardware store in 1994, paired with faded khaki shorts and no shoes. His bare feet were planted firmly on the Persian rug. He had taped four massive, hand-drawn topographical maps of New Zealand’s South Island across the whiteboard, completely covering the studio’s Q3 financial projections with thick, black Sharpie markers indicating river crossings and mountain passes.

At the other end of the table sat Guillermo del Toro.

Guillermo was dressed entirely in black, wearing a thick velvet jacket despite the pleasant seventy-two-degree Los Angeles morning, his reading glasses pushed up into his wild, graying hair. In front of him sat a dozen heavy, gray blocks of wet sculpting clay, several fine-point wire loop tools, and three leather-bound sketchbooks filled with visceral, grotesque ink drawings of rotting bone, spiked iron helmets, and deformed, leering faces.

Sitting between them, looking utterly delighted, was Dante Ferretti. The legendary Italian production designer was waving his hands in the air, speaking rapid-fire Italian-accented English, arguing with Guillermo over the architectural stress points of a dwarven gate.

As Daniel walked in, the room quieted down.

Peter turned around, a massive, unkempt grin breaking through his thick beard. He wiped a smudge of charcoal dust off his thumb onto his shorts, stepping forward and extending a hand.

”Daniel!” Peter beamed, his New Zealand accent cutting through the room with breathless energy. ”Bloody hell, mate! Good to see you in the flesh! We landed at LAX yesterday afternoon, and I swear to you, we haven’t slept a wink. We’ve just been sitting in the hotel drawing maps on the napkins!”

Daniel took his hand, giving it a firm, solid shake. ”Good to have you here, Peter. Bare feet and all.”

”Ah, the carpets in Burbank are bloody luxurious,” Peter laughed, wiggling his toes into the wool. ”Much softer than the gravel in Wellington.”

Guillermo stood up from his chair, opening his arms wide, his massive frame radiating warmth as he pulled Daniel into a crushing, theatrical bear hug that smelled of strong Mexican tobacco, clay, and expensive coffee.

”Daniel, my boy!” Guillermo boomed, clapping him solidly on the shoulder blades twice before stepping back. ”Look at you! You look like you just walked out of a Roman colosseum! Did you survive the explosions?”

”Every single one of them,” Daniel smiled, setting his coffee down on the only clear corner of the table. ”Welcome to Burbank, gentlemen.”

”It’s a cathedral of madness, Daniel,” Guillermo said, gesturing grandly to the table covered in clay and sketches. ”Dante and I have been arguing for three hours about the Orcs. Look at this.”

Guillermo reached down, picking up a small, exquisitely detailed clay bust of an Orc warrior. It was horrifying. The jaw was misaligned, the flesh around the eyes pulled back in scarred, taut ribbons, with cruel, jagged teeth jutting from the gums.

”The Orcs of Mordor cannot be symmetrical,” Guillermo explained, his eyes burning with childlike, infectious passion. ”They are a ruined race. They are tortured, mutated, living in filth and iron. If you make them look like digital rubber, nobody will be afraid. But if we cast these in cold foam latex, paint the broken veins by hand, and give them rotting teeth made of dental acrylic... when they scream into the camera at the Black Gate, the children in the audience will want to crawl under their seats!”

Peter nodded vigorously, pointing a Sharpie at the whiteboard. ”And the locations, Dan! Look at this. The South Island. We can shoot the plains of Rohan in the Canterbury region. It’s completely untouched. No power lines, no modern roads, just endless, rolling golden tussock grass running right up against the snow-capped Southern Alps. We put three hundred real horses out there with local riders, and we don’t have to touch a single computer for the wide shots.”

Daniel looked at the maps. He looked at the clay Orc bust. He looked at Dante Ferretti’s architectural sketches of Minas Tirith rising like a ship’s prow from the rock.

It was breathtaking. The vision was completely aligned.

Tom cleared his throat from the corner, taking a step forward, holding an iPad. He looked at Daniel, his voice carrying the careful, measured weight of a producer who was about to drop an anvil into a pool of water.

”Dan,” Tom said, looking between Peter and Guillermo. ”The logistical breakdown the team ran over the weekend... we need to talk about the master schedule. If we do what they’re proposing—if we build full-scale sets in the Southern Alps, build the miniatures in Wellington, and sculpt tens of thousands of practical prosthetics—we can’t treat this like a normal production.”

”I know,” Daniel said calmly.

Peter blinked, looking slightly nervous, shifting his weight from one bare foot to the other. ”Look, mate... if the schedule is too aggressive, we can scale back the—”

”We’re not scaling back anything, Peter,” Daniel cut him off smoothly, his voice dropping into absolute, unshakeable authority.

He looked at both directors, his gaze steady and clear.

”Here is how this is going to work,” Daniel said. ”We are not shooting The Fellowship of the Ring, releasing it, waiting to see how the box office does, and then greenlighting the sequel. That’s how legacy studios do it because they’re terrified of risk. That is how you end up with rushed productions, actors aging out of their roles, and sets being torn down only to be rebuilt two years later at double the cost.”

Guillermo paused, his wire loop tool hovering over a block of clay. ”What are you suggesting, Daniel?”

”We shoot all three movies simultaneously,” Daniel said.

The conference room went dead silent.

Tom let out a slow, quiet breath he had been holding for twenty minutes. Dante Ferretti’s eyes widened behind his glasses.

Peter Jackson stared at Daniel as if the man had just started speaking in ancient Elvish. ”All... all three? Together?”

”Back-to-back-to-back,” Daniel nodded. ”One continuous production marathon. You prep the entire trilogy right now. You cast the entire fellowship, you build the armor, you forge the swords, and when you take the cameras down to New Zealand, you don’t come home until all three films are in the can.”

”Daniel,” Guillermo whispered, a look of profound, terrifying awe washing over his face. ”Do you have any idea what kind of physical and mental ordeal that is going to be? To shoot an epic of that scale across three films... it will take at least eighteen months of principal photography. Nearly two solid years in the mud.”

”I know exactly what it will take,” Daniel said, leaning over the table, resting his palms flat on the wood. ”It will be the most grueling, punishing film shoot in the history of the medium. It will test your crew, it will test your actors, and it will push both of you to the absolute brink of exhaustion.”

Daniel looked directly into Peter’s eyes.

”But when you finish,” Daniel continued, his voice vibrating with certainty, ”we will hold the complete, unbroken trilogy in our hands. We will have saved hundreds of millions of dollars on location infrastructure and cast retainers. And more importantly, Miller Studios will be able to release the films in three tightly-knit, consecutive holiday windows. December, December, December. We will lock down the global culture for three straight years. Nobody will be able to touch us.”

Peter stood frozen. His mouth opened slightly, his eyes tracing the contours of the New Zealand maps on the whiteboard.

Two years in the wilderness. Hundreds of days of rain, mud, and practical miniature photography. An impossible, unprecedented mountain to climb.

A slow, brilliant, utterly fearless smile spread across Peter Jackson’s face.

”Bloody hell,” Peter breathed out, letting out a wild, breathless laugh. ”Two years in the bush with a Bolex camera and three hundred horses. It’s madness. It’s pure, absolute madness.”

”Are you in?” Daniel asked.

”I’m in,” Peter said without a single second of hesitation. ”I’ll live in a tent if I have to.”

Daniel turned his head to Guillermo.

Guillermo was staring at the clay Orc in his hand. He slowly set the sculpture down on the table, wiping his clay-stained fingers on a rag. He looked up at Daniel, his eyes shining behind his thick lenses with that pure, sacred fire that only true storytellers possessed.

”Two years to build a living, breathing myth,” Guillermo said softly, his voice full of reverent gravity. ”To give the world real monsters, real beauty, and real darkness. Daniel, my friend... for a chance like that, I would march directly into the fires of Mordor barefoot with Peter.”

”Good,” Daniel said, standing up straight. He looked at Tom. ”Tom, write the development checks. Release the initial sixty million for the Wellington workshop infrastructure and set construction. Get Dante’s art department their travel visas.”

”On it, boss,” Tom nodded, already tapping rapid notes into his iPad.

Daniel looked at the two visionary outsiders standing in his conference room. The suits at Warner Bros and Disney would have had a collective stroke watching this meeting. They would have demanded focus groups, PG-13 guarantees, and product placement meetings with toy manufacturers.

Miller Studios didn’t do focus groups. They made cinema.

”Welcome to Middle-earth, gentlemen,” Daniel smiled, picking up his coffee mug. ”Make something that will live forever.”

---

A few months later.

The heat of the southern California summer had rolled into the San Fernando Valley, but inside the soundstages of the Miller Studios lot, the air was carefully conditioned to a crisp, controlled sixty-eight degrees.

Stage 2 was a cathedral of brushed aluminum, polished glass, and soaring architectural beams.

It was the interior set of Stark Tower’s penthouse.

The practical set was breathtaking in its execution. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass walls looked out over a massive, curved cyclorama green screen that would eventually be replaced by the digital skyline of midtown Manhattan. The furniture was sleek, ultra-modern, and minimalist—low-profile leather sofas, a glowing marble bar, and an open balcony platform where Tony Stark’s automated armor-removal gantry was installed.

This was Day 94 of principal photography.

The final day of shooting on The Avengers.

The atmosphere on the stage was entirely different from the grueling, concussive warfare of the Cleveland streets. There were no exploding taxicabs today, no freezing drizzle, and no pulverized drywall choking the air. The work today was intimate, dialogue-heavy, and focused on the quiet, emotional aftermath of the climactic battle.

Daniel stood on his mark near the center of the penthouse living area.

He was in the Captain America uniform, but the suit was heavily, artfully weathered. The Kevlar plates were scuffed with simulated carbon burns, the right shoulder pauldron had a jagged tear from a digital energy blast, and the vibranium shield resting against the leg of a nearby table was streaked with soot. His hair was slightly mussed, carrying the exhaustion of a soldier who had just fought for twelve continuous hours.

To his right, leaning against the polished marble bar, was Robert Downey Jr.

Robert was wearing a torn, oil-stained black undershirt, his arms covered in prosthetic cuts and bruises, the blue glow of the arc reactor pulsing faintly against his chest. He was holding a small glass tumbler, twirling an ice cube with a finger, completely locked into the tired, cynical warmth of Tony Stark.

Sitting on the low leather sofa, nursing a cup of tea with bruised knuckles, was Hugh Dancy as Bruce Banner. Across from him stood Chris Hemsworth in his battered Asgardian armor, and Jeremy Renner leaning against a glass pillar with his tactical bow slung over his shoulder.

And standing just three feet from Daniel, looking out over the green screen balcony, was Scarlett Johansson.

Her Black Widow suit was worn, the leather scuffed at the knees and elbows, a clean, narrow cut painted across her left cheekbone. Her red hair was slightly tangled from the battle.

As the lighting grips adjusted the final softbox overhead, Scarlett turned her head, catching Daniel’s eye.

Over the last few months, the dynamic between them had settled into something comfortable, grounded, and seamless. The private dinner at the Bel Air estate three weeks after the Cleveland shoot had been a success. Margot and Florence had immediately adopted Scarlett into their chaotic orbit, spending four hours drinking vintage Pinot Noir, eating Florence’s chocolate tart, and roasting Daniel’s ridiculous Goggins-mandated habits until midnight. There were no awkward boundaries, no unspoken tensions, and zero industry drama. Scarlett was part of the family now, moving through Daniel’s life with the same sharp, confident grace she brought to the screen.

Scarlett tilted her head, offering Daniel a slow, private, incredibly subtle smile. She reached out, her fingers lightly tapping against the rim of his battered shield.

”Almost at the finish line, Captain,” Scarlett murmured in that low, velvety rasp.

Daniel looked down at her, the exhaustion of months of directing the most expensive movie in history melting away under her gaze. ”Almost. Don’t blow your lines on the last setup.”

”I haven’t blown a line since July, Miller,” she whispered back, her eyes dancing with warm, unvarnished affection. ”Try to keep up.”

”Alright, everyone,” the First AD called out through his radio headset, stepping onto the perimeter of the set. ”This is the master setup for Scene 142. The wrap on the sequence. Let’s make it count!”

The crew moved with practiced, quiet efficiency.

Bob Elswit was standing behind the A-camera on a smooth, rubber-wheeled dolly track. The sound boom operators extended their carbon-fiber poles overhead, hovering just outside the key lights.

Daniel took a slow, deep breath. He let his posture settle, shifting his weight.

The transition was instant. The fatigue of the production vanished from his eyes, replaced by the quiet, heavy, unyielding resolve of Steve Rogers.

”Roll sound,” Daniel commanded.

”Sound is rolling!”

”Cameras set!” Bob called out.

Daniel looked at Robert. He looked at Hugh. He looked at Scarlett. The team was assembled. The battle was won.

”Action,” Daniel said.

The scene was the quiet farewell. The moment where these six massive, broken, extraordinary egos finally acknowledged that they had formed something larger than themselves.

Robert set his glass down on the marble bar with a soft, clean clink. He looked across the room at Daniel, his delivery stripped of all the usual manic deflection, carrying that rare, raw sincerity that made his Tony Stark legendary.

”So,” Robert said softly, wiping a smear of soot from his temple. ”What happens now?”

Daniel turned from the balcony, his boots making a quiet, heavy sound against the hardwood flooring. He looked around the circle of heroes.

”Now?” Daniel spoke as Steve Rogers, his voice low, steady, and carrying the quiet gravity of a soldier who knew the peace was only temporary. ”We stand down. We let the city rebuild.”

”And when the next threat drops out of the sky?” Scarlett asked, stepping up beside him, her character’s guarded, cynical walls dropping just enough to show the quiet loyalty underneath. ”What then, Cap?”

Daniel met her gaze. He held it for two beats, the unspoken trust between the two characters filling the frame with an effortless, electric weight.

Daniel turned slightly, looking back toward Robert, Hugh, and Chris.

”Then we answer the call,” Daniel said, a faint, resolute smile touching his lips. ”Together.”

Robert held his stare for three seconds, giving a slow, almost imperceptible nod of respect.

The dolly camera began its slow, sweeping pull-back, retreating through the shattered glass entryway of the penthouse, widening the frame to capture all six figures standing together in the warm, golden light of the fading day, united amidst the ruins.

Bob Elswit held the frame.

The sound of the cooling studio lights was the only noise on the soundstage. Two hundred crew members stood frozen in the shadows, holding their breath.

Bob let out a slow, quiet breath. ”Hold... hold... frame is clean.”

Daniel broke the character posture. He stepped off his mark, looking directly at the camera crew, and let out a voice that filled every single cubic foot of Stage 2 with unvarnished, triumphant power.

”And that... is a wrap on principal photography for The Avengers!”

The soundstage exploded.

A deafening, earth-shaking roar of cheers, screaming, and wild applause ripped through the massive hangar. Confetti cannons that the special effects team had secretly rigged into the ceiling grid suddenly detonated, raining thousands of tiny red, silver, and gold metallic foils down over the penthouse set.

Robert Downey Jr. immediately let out a loud, joyous whoop, tossing his script into the air and pulling Hugh Dancy into an aggressive, laughing headlock.

Hemsworth let out a thunderous Asgardian roar, sweeping Renner off his feet in a massive bear hug.

Scarlett turned to Daniel, laughing as the metallic foil caught in her red hair. She didn’t hesitate. In front of the entire two-hundred-person crew, she threw her arms around Daniel’s neck, pressing her face into the crook of his collar, holding him tightly as the applause washed over them like a tidal wave.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her feet slightly off the floor, feeling the rapid, electric thud of her heart against his chest.

”You did it, Daniel,” Scarlett whispered against his ear, her voice thick with genuine emotion. ”You pulled it off, once again.”

”We did it,” Daniel corrected softly, setting her down, looking into her glowing, radiant face.

She reached up, her thumb gently brushing away a stray piece of gold confetti from his cheekbone, giving him a look of absolute, unreserved intimacy that was entirely for him.

Tom and Marcus walked onto the set, weaving through the cheering grips and camera assistants.

Tom was holding a bottle of vintage champagne in one hand and four crystal flutes in the other, his face split by the widest, most relieved grin Daniel had ever seen on the man.

”Ninety-four days, Dan!” Tom shouted over the roaring crew, popping the cork with a loud thump that sent foam spraying over the floor. ”Ninety-four days of shooting, four hundred million dollars, and not a single hospital visit! We have the whole fucking movie in the can!”

Marcus took a flute, pouring a measure of champagne, handing it to Daniel with a deep, knowing nod. ”The rendering farms in Burbank have already ingested the first eighty days of footage. The initial cuts are looking like a masterpiece, Dan.”

They had shot the mid-credit scene as well as the post credit scene. Everything was finally over.

Daniel took the glass, raising it toward Marcus and Tom, and then turned to face the cheering, whistling crowd of men and women who had poured their blood, sweat, and sanity into this production for four grueling months.

”To the crew!” Daniel shouted, raising his glass high under the hot lights. ”To the greatest team in the history of this industry! Drink the studio’s champagne, take tomorrow off, and thank you for making history!”

The roar that answered him shook the dust from the soundstage rafters.

Daniel took a sip of the cold, crisp champagne. The taste was sharp, and sweet.

He looked around the massive set as the celebration unfolded. Robert was pouring drinks for the camera operators; Hemsworth was teaching Hugh Dancy how to properly chug beer from a bottle; Scarlett was standing beside him, her hand casually, securely resting on his hip.

The physical war was over. The mud, the explosives, the bruising, and the eighteen-hour days on the street were behind them.

Ahead lay months of post-production—editing suites, orchestral recording sessions with John Williams, color grading, and complex visual effects reviews. And thousands of miles away, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro were already beginning the construction of Middle-Earth.

Daniel set his empty glass down on the edge of the marble bar.

He looked down at his calloused hands, untied the heavy tactical boots from his feet, and felt a deep, profound peace settle into his bones.

Daniel smiled, threw his jacket over his shoulder, and walked off the stage.
