The Maker: Hollywood

The editing bay on the third floor of the post-production building was completely pitch black, save for the massive, glowing monitors lining the front desk. The air conditioning was cranked down to a frigid sixty-four degrees to keep the massive server racks from overheating, giving the room the distinct, isolated feeling of a sensory deprivation tank.

Benny sat in the center leather chair, his fingers flying across the massive, glowing sound mixing console. As the head of the post-production and editing department, and the lead sound mixer for Miller Studios, Benny was basically a wizard who spoke entirely in timecodes, decibels, and framing ratios. He had a pair of heavy, expensive studio headphones resting around his neck, and his eyes were glued to the timeline on the center screen.

Sitting on the leather sofa a few feet behind him was Daniel.

Daniel wasn’t slouched over or eating three-day-old takeout. That was the old Daniel. The Daniel who had almost worked himself into an early grave a few years ago. Now, even when he was locked in a dark editing cave for fourteen hours a day, he maintained the discipline. He had the literal physique of Captain America, which made sitting in the dark watching film strips feel a little ridiculous.

He was currently eating out of a plastic Tupperware container filled with boiled chicken breast, quinoa, and steamed broccoli, completely devoid of any sauce or seasoning. It was pure, utilitarian fuel.

”I’m telling you, Dan,” Benny said, not turning around, his hand resting on the heavy jog wheel of the editing deck. ”We cut right as his eyes close. It gives the audience a microsecond of anticipation before the lightning flashes.”

Daniel chewed a piece of dry chicken, swallowed heavily, and took a sip of alkaline water. ”If we cut before he blinks, it looks like a mistake. It looks like we ran out of film. Let him finish the blink, hold for two frames, and then cut to the wide shot.”

Benny sighed, spinning his chair around. ”We’ve been looking at this exact two-and-a-half-second clip of Cillian Murphy’s face for forty-five minutes. If I look at his pores for one more minute, I’m going to start seeing him in my sleep. The editing team outside is waiting for us to lock the sequence so they can start the color grade.”

”Color grading can wait,” Daniel said calmly, setting his Tupperware down on the small coffee table. ”This is the climax of the movie, Benny. When he stands in the rain, the timing has to be flawless. It has to feel like a breath. Let me see it with the blink.”

Benny grumbled something under his breath, spun his chair back around, and clicked his mouse. He scrubbed the timeline back a few seconds.

”Playing it back,” Benny said, hitting the spacebar.

On the massive monitor, the raw footage played. Cillian Murphy, covered in fake mud, threw his arms up into the freezing artificial rain. He tilted his head back, closing his eyes just as the lightning strobe flashed. The camera lingered for just two frames after the blink, and then seamlessly cut to the massive, sweeping wide shot of the prison exterior.

Benny stopped the playback. The room went silent.

”Okay,” Benny admitted reluctantly, scratching the back of his neck. ”You’re right. The extra two frames let the emotion settle. It breathes better.”

”I told you,” Daniel smiled, picking his food back up.

Before they could move on to the next scene, the heavy, soundproof door at the back of the bay clicked open.

A young production assistant stepped into the dark room, holding a sleek, silver hard drive case. He looked slightly nervous, like a guy who was interrupting a bomb defusal.

”Excuse me, Mr. Miller, Benny,” the PA whispered, as if speaking at a normal volume would ruin the footage on the screen. ”A courier just dropped this off from John Williams’ studio. He said it was the preliminary mix for the third act.”

Benny instantly sat up straight. ”Bring that here right now.”

The PA hurried over, handed the case to Benny, and practically sprinted back out of the room.

Benny cracked the case open, pulled out the secure solid-state drive, and plugged it directly into the mixing board. His fingers danced across the keyboard, transferring the massive, uncompressed audio files directly into their editing timeline.

Daniel set his food aside completely, leaning forward on the sofa. He had been waiting for this for weeks. They had been editing the movie in almost total silence, relying entirely on the actors’ performances and the ambient sound effects.

”I’m dropping it onto track four,” Benny said, dragging the audio block on his monitor. ”Lining up the timecodes... alright. It’s synced with the escape sequence. You want to watch it from the moment he crawls out of the pipe?”

”Play it,” Daniel said.

Benny reached out and muted all the dialogue and sound effect tracks, isolating just the music. He hit play.

The screen showed Cillian dragging himself out of the fiberglass pipe, exhausted and covered in sludge.

Out of the massive, high-fidelity studio monitors, a single, incredibly deep cello note rolled through the room. It was heavy, mournful, and slow. It sounded exactly like the physical weight of the concrete walls they had been staring at for two months.

Then, as Cillian pushed himself up into the muddy basin, a light, nimble piano melody began to dance over the top of the cello. It was hesitant at first, like a man afraid to believe he was actually outside.

As Cillian ripped his shirt off, throwing his hands up to the sky, the piano melody swelled, entirely replacing the cello. The music wasn’t triumphant or loud. It was achingly, devastatingly beautiful. It sounded like pure, unadulterated relief.

Daniel felt the hair on his arms stand up.

Benny didn’t say a word. He just let the track play through the wide shot, the piano slowly fading out as the camera panned up into the dark sky.

When the screen finally faded to black, the silence in the editing bay was deafening.

Benny slowly took his hands off the mixing board. He swiveled his chair around to look at Daniel.

”I mean,” Benny said softly, shaking his head. ”What do you even say to that? The man is a literal wizard. He just took three months of our hard work, added a piano, and made us look like amateurs.”

”It’s perfect,” Daniel murmured, staring at the black screen. ”It changes the entire texture of the scene. It doesn’t tell the audience to be happy. It just lets them exhale.”

”I’ll start layering the ambient rain sounds back in,” Benny said, immediately turning back to his board, deeply energized by the new audio track. ”If we mix the thunder underneath the cello, it’s going to shake the seats in the theater.”

The heavy door at the back of the bay swung open again.

This time, it wasn’t a nervous PA. The overhead fluorescent lights suddenly snapped on, flooding the pitch-black room with blinding, harsh white light.

Daniel winced, throwing an arm up over his eyes. ”Jesus, Marcus, are you trying to permanently blind me?”

Marcus stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame, looking entirely too well-rested. He was wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit and holding his iPad.

”You guys have been in this cave for twelve hours,” Marcus said casually, walking into the room. ”You need a reminder that the sun actually exists. I brought numbers.”

”We like it in the dark,” Benny grumbled, squinting at the monitors. ”The dark is where the magic happens.”

”The magic happens at the box office, Benny,” Marcus corrected, pulling up a spreadsheet on his screen. ”I just got off the phone with the international distribution team. I wanted to give you the final tally for Treasure Planet since its theatrical run officially closed out in the Asian markets this morning.”

Daniel lowered his arm, letting his eyes adjust to the light. ”Where did we land?”

”One point five billion,” Marcus said, a massive, satisfied grin on his face. ”Give or take a few million in late receipts. For a stylized, aesthetic sci-fi movie. It’s ridiculous.”

”It’s a good movie,” Daniel said simply.

”It’s a juggernaut,” Marcus corrected. ”But that’s old news. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets just crossed nine hundred and fifty million globally, and it hasn’t even opened in Japan yet. We are tracking to casually breeze past a billion by next weekend.”

Benny let out a low whistle. ”We’re literally funding the entire theatrical exhibition industry single-handedly right now.”

”We basically are,” Marcus agreed. ”The theater chains are practically building shrines to Daniel in their lobbies. It’s absurd numbers for any other studio on the planet, but for Miller Studios? The accountants didn’t even blink. They just added a few more zeros to the Q3 projections.”

”Good,” Daniel said, picking up his empty Tupperware container and standing up from the sofa. He stretched his back, his muscles pulling tight under his shirt. ”Keep the accountants happy. Benny, I’m going to take Marcus’s advice and go see the sun. Send me the audio mix for the roof scene tonight. I want to listen to it in the car tomorrow.”

”Will do, boss,” Benny said, already putting his headphones back on. ”Turn the lights back off on your way out, Marcus. You’re ruining my contrast ratios.”

Daniel and Marcus walked out of the editing bay, hitting the light switch and plunging Benny back into his comfortable darkness.

”You look awful, by the way,” Marcus noted as they walked down the hallway toward the elevators. ”I mean, physically you look like you could punch a hole through a brick wall, but your eyes look like you haven’t slept since Thursday.”

”I’ve been staring at color correction monitors for a week,” Daniel sighed, pressing the elevator button. ”My brain is just a puddle of timecodes.”

”Well, pull yourself together,” Marcus said, patting Daniel on the shoulder as the elevator doors opened. ”You have a gala to attend tonight.”

Daniel stopped halfway into the elevator. He looked back at Marcus. ”A what?”

”The Hollywood Foreign Press pre-awards gala,” Marcus reminded him, looking highly amused. ”Margot RSVP’d for all three of you a month ago. Don’t tell me you forgot.”

Daniel closed his eyes, letting his head drop back against the stainless steel wall of the elevator. He had completely forgotten. The last thing he wanted to do was put on a stiff tuxedo, go to a massive hotel ballroom, and talk to hundreds of industry executives about market shares and synergy.

”Tell them I have the flu,” Daniel muttered.

”You tell your wives you have the flu,” Marcus laughed, stepping back from the doors. ”I’m not getting involved in that domestic dispute. Good luck tonight, Dan.”

The elevator doors slid shut.

An hour later, Daniel pulled his car up the long, winding driveway of the Bel Air estate. The sun was just starting to set over the hills, casting a warm, golden glow across the manicured lawns.

He parked the car, walked through the heavy front doors, and dropped his keys on the entryway table. The house was quiet, smelling faintly of expensive perfume and fresh flowers.

”I’m home,” Daniel called out, kicking his shoes off.

”In the bedroom!” Florence’s voice echoed down the long hallway.

Daniel walked down the hall and pushed the heavy oak door to the master suite open.

The room looked like a high-end fashion boutique had exploded. There were garment bags draped over the armchairs, jewelry boxes open on the vanity, and three different pairs of designer heels scattered across the plush rug.

Margot was standing in front of the full-length mirror, wearing an absolutely stunning, floor-length emerald green silk gown that clung perfectly to her figure. She was adjusting a delicate diamond necklace.

Florence was sitting on the edge of the massive bed, wearing a sharp, impeccably tailored black velvet pantsuit with a plunging neckline, holding a glass of champagne.

They both looked up as Daniel walked in.

Florence took one look at him, lowered her champagne glass, and let out a long, theatrical sigh.

”Look at him,” Florence said, gesturing to Daniel with her free hand. ”He has the face of a Greek god, the body of an Olympic decathlete, and he smells like stale editing bay air and unseasoned chicken. He’s a tragedy.”

”I am standing right here,” Daniel said, leaning against the doorframe.

”You look like a zombie, honey,” Margot agreed, turning away from the mirror and walking over to him. She rested her hands flat against his chest, smiling up at him. ”A very, very handsome zombie, but a zombie nonetheless. Have you been in the dark all day?”

”Benny likes it cold and dark,” Daniel defended himself, wrapping his arms around Margot’s waist. ”And I don’t smell like unseasoned chicken.”

”You absolutely do,” Florence confirmed, standing up and walking over. She poked him in the chest. ”Go take a shower. A long one. You have exactly one hour to transform from a cave troll back into the most handsome man in Hollywood, because we are not walking the red carpet tonight by ourselves.”

”What if I told you I suddenly developed a terrible fever?” Daniel tried, leaning down to kiss Margot’s neck.

”I would tell you to take some Advil and put your tuxedo on,” Margot laughed, pushing him gently toward the master bathroom. ”We are going to this gala. We have been sitting in the house for two weeks. I want to drink expensive champagne on someone else’s dime, and I want to show off my husband.”

”You just want to watch the studio executives grovel at his feet,” Florence teased, grabbing a makeup brush from the vanity.

”That is a perk, yes,” Margot admitted happily. ”Now go. Shower. Your tuxedo is hanging in the closet. The black Tom Ford.”

Daniel knew a losing battle when he saw one. He smiled, kissed them both, and retreated into the bathroom.

An hour and a half later, the three of them stepped out of a sleek black town car and onto the flashing, chaotic red carpet in front of the Beverly Hilton.

The wall of photographers erupted the second their feet hit the carpet. The shouts of ”Daniel! Margot! Florence! Look here!” blended into a deafening roar.

Daniel hated the red carpet. It always felt chaotic and incredibly shallow. But he knew how to play the game. He stood tall, the custom-tailored Tom Ford tuxedo fitting his broad shoulders perfectly. He slipped his hands into his pockets, flashed a relaxed, confident smile, and let his wives take the spotlight.

Margot and Florence were seasoned professionals. They knew exactly how to angle themselves, how to catch the light, and how to command the absolute attention of every camera in the ZIP code. Standing between them, Daniel looked exactly like what he was: the undisputed king of the industry.

They navigated the gauntlet of flashing lights and quickly escaped into the massive, dimly lit ballroom.

The gala was exactly what Daniel expected. It was a sea of expensive suits, designer dresses, and hushed conversations about backend points and distribution deals. Waiters carrying silver trays of champagne wove through the crowd, while a string quartet played softly in the corner.

”We survived the carpet,” Florence declared, grabbing two glasses of champagne from a passing waiter and handing one to Margot. ”Now, the goal is to avoid anyone who wants to pitch you a script, Daniel.”

”That eliminates roughly ninety percent of the room,” Daniel noted, scanning the crowd.

”Then we stand by the bar and look unapproachable,” Margot decided, taking a sip of her drink.

They made their way to a quieter corner near one of the massive ice sculptures at the main bar. For the first twenty minutes, the strategy worked. People were slightly intimidated by the sheer gravity of the trio, opting to offer polite nods from a distance rather than risk an awkward conversation.

Daniel was just starting to actually enjoy the evening, chatting quietly with Florence about her upcoming travel schedule, when the peace was inevitably broken.

”Daniel Miller.”

Daniel turned around.

Standing a few feet away was a man in his late twenties. He was wearing a ridiculously expensive, sharply cut suit, but he had paired it with clean white sneakers in a desperate attempt to look casual. His hair was slicked back, and he held a tumbler of whiskey with an air of practiced, aggressive arrogance.

Daniel recognized him vaguely from the trades. His name was Joseph something. He was a newly minted billionaire and the executive VP of content for a massive, rival streaming service that was currently trying to burn billions of dollars to buy their way into Hollywood prestige.

”Joseph, right?” Daniel asked politely, offering a brief nod.

”Good memory,” Joseph smiled, stepping closer, completely ignoring Margot and Florence. ”I saw you walk in. I had to come over and pay my respects to the last purist in Hollywood.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow. ”Purist?”

”Oh, absolutely,” Joseph said, taking a sip of his whiskey. ”I read the piece in Variety about your Shawshank shoot. Shooting entirely on 35mm film? Refusing to use digital extensions? Relying purely on the theatrical exhibition window? It’s quaint, Daniel. It really is. I respect the dedication to the museum of cinema.”

Florence practically choked on her champagne. She covered her mouth, her eyes darting to Daniel. Margot just stiffened, a cold, sharp smile fixing itself onto her face.

Daniel didn’t get angry. He didn’t tighten his jaw or raise his voice. He just looked at Joseph with the calm, mild curiosity of a man watching a toddler try to explain quantum physics.

”Quaint,” Daniel repeated, testing the word out.

”It’s just the reality of the market, man,” Joseph shrugged, leaning one elbow against the bar, trying to look like a peer. ”The theatrical model is a dinosaur. The audiences don’t want to drive to a theater and sit in the dark. They want content fed directly to their living rooms. At our streamer, we don’t guess what the audience wants. We use data. We have algorithms that track viewing habits down to the microsecond. We know exactly when they pause, when they skip, what actors drive engagement metrics. We build our movies based on data.”

”That sounds very efficient,” Daniel said smoothly, taking a sip of his own drink.

”It’s the future,” Joseph bragged, swirling his whiskey. ”We just dropped a hundred and fifty million on our new sci-fi action feature. Released it straight to the platform on Friday. The engagement metrics are through the roof. It’s perfectly engineered content. We don’t need film stock, and we don’t need theater chains.”

Daniel nodded slowly. He looked Joseph up and down, taking in the white sneakers and the arrogant smirk.

”Data is a wonderful tool, Joseph,” Daniel said, his voice entirely pleasant, lacking any trace of malice. ”But since we’re talking about metrics... how did that perfectly engineered movie do this weekend?”

Joseph frowned slightly, adjusting his collar. ”Like I said, the engagement metrics are—”

”No, not the engagement metrics,” Daniel interrupted gently. ”I mean the actual revenue. How much actual, liquid cash did your algorithm generate for your company this weekend?”

Joseph shifted his weight. ”We don’t measure success by weekend box office, Daniel. It’s about subscriber retention and platform growth. The metrics—”

”So, zero,” Daniel said simply.

Joseph’s face flushed a dull red. ”It’s a different business model. You wouldn’t understand the platform economics.”

”I understand platform economics perfectly fine,” Daniel smiled. ”MovieFlix is my streaming service. We launched it a few years ago. We have a very healthy subscriber base. But I use my platform as a library. A place for my movies to live after they’ve finished their theatrical run.”

Daniel took a step closer to Joseph. The relaxed, polite posture remained, but the sheer gravity of his presence suddenly made the young tech executive look incredibly small.

”You see, Joseph,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a quiet, conversational rhythm that only the four of them could hear. ”You can use all the algorithms and microsecond data points you want to engineer ’content’. But audiences don’t leave their houses to watch content. They leave their houses to experience a story.”

Daniel took another sip of his drink.

”You mentioned my dedication to the museum of cinema,” Daniel continued gently. ”My studio just released Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets a while ago. We shot it on film. We put it in those dinosaur movie theaters. Do you know what it made in its opening weekend?”

Joseph didn’t answer. He just stared at Daniel, the arrogant smirk completely gone.

”It made over two hundred million dollars in three days internationally,” Daniel told him, the numbers casually rolling off his tongue. ”In cash. Not in hypothetical engagement metrics. My studio generated more actual revenue in seventy-two hours than your entire platform’s annual production budget.”

Margot took a very slow, highly satisfied sip of her champagne.

”You guys are playing with venture capital and algorithms, trying to figure out what human beings want,” Daniel said, offering a warm, devastatingly polite smile. ”I already know what they want. So, good luck with the metrics, Joseph. Enjoy the party.”

Daniel didn’t wait for a response. He simply turned back to his wives, effectively ending the conversation.

Joseph stood there for a terrible, agonizing five seconds, completely outmatched, before awkwardly clearing his throat, turning around, and disappearing back into the crowded ballroom.

The second he was out of earshot, Florence let out a sharp, genuine laugh.

”Oh, that was beautiful,” Florence whispered, leaning against Daniel’s arm. ”You completely gutted him, and you didn’t even raise your voice.”

”Tech guys always think they’ve cracked the code to human emotion,” Daniel shook his head, finishing his drink. ”They forget that a spreadsheet can’t write a script.”

”Remind me never to argue with you about money,” Margot smiled, reaching up to adjust the lapel of Daniel’s tuxedo. ”You were terrifying just now.”

”I was just stating the facts,” Daniel defended himself innocently.

They spent the next two hours actually enjoying the party. Daniel managed to avoid most of the aggressive pitch meetings, catching up with a few veteran directors he genuinely respected and introducing Margot and Florence to some of the old-guard studio heads who still operated on handshakes rather than algorithms.

By eleven-thirty, the sheer volume of the ballroom and the endless small talk had finally worn Daniel down. The exhaustion from the dark editing bay was starting to catch up with him.

”Alright,” Margot said, reading the slight tightening around Daniel’s eyes. She put her hand on the small of his back. ”You survived. We showed you off. I think it’s time to take the cave troll home before he turns into a pumpkin.”

”Thank God,” Daniel sighed in relief.

They made their exit, slipping out a side door to avoid the lingering paparazzi on the main carpet, and found their town car waiting in the valet line.

The ride back to Bel Air was quiet and comfortable. Florence took her heels off the second she got into the car, resting her feet on the plush seat, while Margot leaned her head on Daniel’s shoulder. The neon lights of Los Angeles blurred past the tinted windows.

When they finally arrived back at the estate, the house was entirely silent.

Florence headed straight for the kitchen to find a midnight snack, while Margot kicked her own shoes off in the entryway.

Daniel took his tuxedo jacket off, tossing it over the back of a chair. He unbuttoned the top two buttons of his crisp white shirt, pulling the bowtie loose. He felt the tension of the evening finally bleed out of his shoulders.

”I’m going to get some water,” Margot said, padding barefoot toward the kitchen. ”Do you want anything?”

”No, I’m good,” Daniel said.

He didn’t follow her. Instead, he walked slowly down the wide hallway that led to the west wing of the house. He pushed open a set of heavy, soundproof double doors and stepped into his private home theater.

It was a beautiful room, lined with acoustic paneling, featuring a massive, state-of-the-art projection screen and a sound system that rivaled most commercial multiplexes.

Daniel walked over to the digital console near the leather recliners. He pulled his cell phone out of his pocket. Before leaving the studio, Benny had emailed him the encrypted audio file of the final scene they had cut that morning.

Daniel synced his phone to the theater’s sound system.

He didn’t turn the screen on. He didn’t need the visuals. He had been staring at Cillian’s face for two months.

He just hit play on his phone and sat down in one of the leather chairs in the pitch black room.

The massive, incredibly deep note of the cello filled the dark theater. It vibrated in the floorboards, heavy and mournful.

Daniel closed his eyes, letting the sound wash over him.

Then, the delicate, dancing notes of the piano drifted in, hovering above the cello. It was so light, so fragile, yet completely unbroken by the heavy strings beneath it.

The door to the theater quietly clicked open.

A wedge of warm light spilled into the room. Margot and Florence stood in the doorway, holding glasses of water. They didn’t speak. They heard the music, and they saw Daniel sitting in the dark, his head leaned back against the leather chair, his eyes closed.

They stepped into the room, letting the heavy door shut behind them, plunging the theater back into darkness.

Margot sat in the chair to his left. Florence sat on his right.

Neither of them asked what he was listening to. The music spoke for itself. It was breathtaking. It carried the weight of a twenty-year prison sentence and the absolute, undeniable relief of a storm washing it all away.

As the piano melody swelled, overtaking the cello entirely, Margot reached across the armrest in the dark and gently took Daniel’s hand. On his other side, Florence leaned her head against his shoulder.

The music faded out, leaving only a sustained, echoing silence in the theater.

Daniel opened his eyes. He squeezed Margot’s hand. He felt the warmth of Florence resting against him.

Daniel sat in the dark with his family, listening to the silence, knowing with absolute certainty that he had just created something immortal.
