The Maker: Hollywood

The four black laptops were finally gone from the teak sunroom table.

For nearly four weeks, the house had smelled of sunscreen, chlorine, delivered pizza boxes, and the faint, sweet scent of Florence’s scented room sprays. Now, the glass sliders were closed against the mid-morning heat, the rugs had been vacuumed clean of stray popcorn kernels, and the only sound on the second floor of the Bel Air house was the low, steady hum of the central air conditioning.

Daniel sat behind the wide walnut desk in his study, wearing a dark navy polo and faded denim. His hair was cut short, his skin was tanned from afternoons floating in the pool, and his desk was almost completely bare.

A single legal pad lay in front of him, the pale yellow paper blank under the warm light of the desk lamp. A brass pen sat resting in the groove at the top.

Beside the pad was his phone, resting flat against the dark wood.

Daniel leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his legs, staring at the blank sheet. For thirty days, his head had been clear—no shot lists, no daily production logs, no actor renegotiations, and no nagging internal whisper about what came next. He had taken breaks before, but they were always pregnant pauses, times where he was already mentally halfway into the shoot of whatever monster was scheduled next on the calendar.

This time, the slate had been clean. And over the last forty-eight hours, as the gaming marathons naturally wound down and the house returned to its quiet rhythm, the fog had lifted.

A very specific, very stubborn idea had taken root.

Daniel picked up his phone, tapped the screen, and dialed Tom’s direct line at the Burbank office.

It picked up on the third ring with a sharp click and the muffled sound of a car door slamming shut in a studio parking structure.

”Tell me you’re calling with an actual movie,” Tom’s voice came through, loud and slightly tinny. ”Because if you’re calling to tell me you found more diamonds in that bloody game, I’m taking a hammer to the Culver City servers myself.”

Daniel smiled faintly, leaning an elbow on his desk. ”You know we already beat the game right? Long past the diamond age. How’s the paperwork?”

A heavy, put-upon sigh came through the speaker. Footsteps echoed on concrete.

”The paperwork is a nightmare, Daniel,” Tom said, his tone dry as sand. ”You asked me to chase down the adaptation and grand theatrical rights for one of the most famous fairy tales in human history. Did you think the French literary trusts and the legacy theatrical estates were just sitting by their fax machines waiting for my email?”

”Did you get them to the table?”

”Of course I got them to the table,” Tom scoffed. ”I told their representation in Paris that Miller Studios was willing to wire a non-refundable deposit that would fund their private archives for the next three generations. The second money with that many zeros hits the conversation, the old French aristocracy gets very cooperative very quickly. But they’re being tedious about the regional performance rights and the theatrical grandfather clauses. It’s like untangling eighty years of wet fishing line.”

”Keep pulling,” Daniel said. ”I want the whole package clean. I don’t want someone popping up out of the woodwork three months before release claiming their great-aunt wrote a three-act ballet version in 1924.”

”I’m on it. Our lawyers are basically living on croissants and red wine at the George V right now,” Tom said, the sound of an office elevator chime cutting in. ”Though I still can’t believe this is what you’re pulling out of your hat. Beauty and the Beast? An actual, singing, dancing, full-blown musical?”

”Why not?”

”Because you just spent the last six months blowing up entire downtown city intersections, and now you want to put on a tuxedo and film people waltzing under chandeliers while teapots talk to them.”

”If it’s done right, people will turn out for it,” Daniel said simply. ”People love the story. It’s universal. But if we do it, it can’t look like a high school stage play stretched over two hours. It needs to feel lavish, romantic, and slightly dangerous.”

”Well, you better start figuring out who’s writing the notes, because if you think John Williams has the time to compose thirty minutes of new vocal numbers while he’s buried under his current commitments, you’re dreaming.”

”I’m not calling John,” Daniel said, picking up the brass pen and tapping it against his palm. ”John’s plate is full. I want Alan Menken.”

Tom went quiet for two seconds on the line. When he spoke again, his voice had that grudging respect he always got when Daniel bypassed the obvious choice. ”Menken. Now that’s sharp. The man practically has melodies hardcoded into his DNA. He knows how to make a four-minute song feel like an emotional sledgehammer without turning it into cheesy radio pop.”

”Get him on a plane to Burbank next week,” Daniel instructed. ”Tell him I want to sit down with a piano and a bottle of scotch. We keep the core pieces everyone loves, but I want three new original tracks that give the Beast real weight. It can’t just be an angry guy in a fur suit waiting for a girl to teach him manners. He needs a presence that feels genuinely tragic.”

”And the look?” Tom asked, the door to his office clicking shut. ”Dante’s tied up. You’re not pulling him away from what he’s doing.”

”I already thought of that,” Daniel said, turning his chair slightly toward the window. ”I want Rick Carter.”

”Rick?”

”Rick did Jurassic Park and such movies,” Daniel said, his voice level. ”The man knows how to combine physical scale with digital extensions better than anyone in this town. We’re going to need a massive, physical baroque ballroom—real marble, real gilded plaster, real candelabras with real fire—but the castle’s enchanted exterior, the forest, the howling blizzards outside the gates? That’s going to take high-end visual effects. Rick understands where the timber ends and the blue screen begins. He doesn’t let the computer swallow the set, but he doesn’t fight technology just for the sake of being stubborn.”

”Fair enough,” Tom grunted, the scratching of a pen coming through the receiver. ”I’ll reach out to Rick’s agency this afternoon. Anything else on this fairy tale, or can I get back to the five hundred other fires burning on the lot?”

”Just lock the rights down, Tom. Make the deal airtight.”

”Don’t worry about the legal knife fight, Dan. I’ll make sure nobody can touch us. You just sit there and get the storyboard and the treatment mapped out. And while you’re at it, pay some attention to Culver City. Rowan called me three times this morning. He says the tournament’s ready to roll and you need to look at the schedule before the servers go live.”

”Patch him in,” Daniel said.

A soft click sounded on the line, followed by the familiar electronic chirp of a studio three-way transfer.

”Rowan?” Daniel said.

”Hey, boss,” Rowan’s voice came through, sounding remarkably awake for a guy who had probably spent the night sleeping under a desk on an air mattress. ”Tom tell you about the sign-ups?”

”He was busy complaining about French lawyers,” Daniel said. ”How does the tournament look?”

”It’s insane, Dan,” Rowan said, a quick keyboard clatter audible behind him. ”We opened the registration portals on The Forge six days ago. We had to spin up four hundred additional dedicated virtual server nodes just to keep the authentication queues from timing out. We’ve got over three million registered players across the different brackets. If we don’t start the broadcasts on time, people are going to start rioting on Reddit.”

”Give me the final dates,” Daniel said, pulling the blank legal pad closer to him, uncapping the brass pen.

”Alright, we’re running it back-to-back over five days this week,” Rowan explained, his tone clicking into that crisp, logistical rhythm he used when running server launches.

”We kick off tomorrow—Wednesday at midnight. That’s the official submission deadline for the Community Design Initiative—the art competition. We’ve already got over forty thousand digital concept art submissions uploaded to the forum. Character skins, original decorative block designs, hand-drawn painting canvases for in-game frames, armor trim patterns.

”Midnight tomorrow, the submission gates lock, and the 48-hour global community voting window opens directly inside the launcher. Everyone who owns the game gets to vote on their favorites. Then, by Friday afternoon, the top fifty designs get handed to our internal art team and you to pick the ten final winners. Ten grand cash to each winner, and our modelers start coding their assets into the Version 1.0 vanilla master branch on Monday morning with their usernames hardcoded into the tooltips.”

Daniel jotted down: Wednesday night – Art deadline. 10 winners into 1.0.

”Second event,” Rowan continued. ”Thursday morning through Saturday afternoon: The Master Builders. The 72-hour creative building window. The theme dropped on Monday—’Ancient Forgotten Empires.’

”We’ve got roughly eighty thousand registered teams locked into isolated creative plots on dedicated flat worlds. They have until Saturday at noon to place their final blocks. Once the clock hits zero, the server snapshots the builds and the community voting goes live for twenty-four hours to narrow it down to the top ten mega-structures. Then Sunday morning, we do the live broadcast where the art directors and you review the ten finalists on stream. $300,000 total purse, paying all the way down to tenth place, with a hundred and twenty grand going to the winner.”

Daniel wrote: Saturday noon – Master Builders. Sunday morning review.

”Third event,” Rowan said. ”The Speedathon. The speedrun invitational. That’s locked for Saturday afternoon, starting at two o’clock. We had the open online qualifiers running all last week. Over fifty thousand runners tried to set times. We narrowed it down to the top sixteen in the world—eight for Set-Seed, eight for Random-Seed.

”We flew all sixteen of them into LA yesterday. They’re staying at the Culver Hotel right down the street from the studio. We built a sixteen-station competition stage in Soundstage 2 with identical hardware, isolated local networks, zero internet latency, and dedicated referee cameras behind their shoulders. Saturday is the live knockout bracket. Random-seed first, then set-seed. $300,000 purse split between the brackets, paying out down to eighth place.”

”And the big one?” Daniel asked, writing down Saturday 2 PM – Speedathon live on Stage 2.

”Sunday afternoon,” Rowan said, a slight, excited grin bleeding into his voice. ”The Last Block Standing. The hundred-player survival battleground. We finished the two-thousand-block custom arena yesterday. It’s an overgrown, decaying ruined city surrounded by jagged mountains, full of hidden chest loot, traps, and custom supply drops.

”Fifty slots went to the top qualifiers who survived the online scrimmages this week, and the other fifty went to the biggest creators and streamers in the space—Jax, the top PvP guys, the variety streamers. Permadeath. Shrinking world border. Custom spectator cams hovering over every skirmish. $600,000 prize pool, with two-fifty to the last man standing and cash prizes paying out to the top twenty survivors.”

Daniel leaned back, looking down at his neat, handwritten schedule.

”And my call times?” Daniel asked.

”You’re in the hot seat for all of it, Dan,” Rowan chuckled. ”We told the community you’d be on the broadcast desk as the lead guest judge for every single category. For the Art Contest and The Master Builders, the public vote narrows the field down, but you, me, and the art leads have to provide the live commentary and pick the grand prize winners on camera.”

”For the Speedathon on Saturday and the Battleground on Sunday, you’re sitting on the caster desk alongside the play-by-play commentators. The chat is already losing its mind over the idea of you watching them sweat through a four-man final circle.”

”I’ll be there,” Daniel said. ”Tell stage security in Culver City to keep the floor clear. I don’t want forty influencers crowding the competitor pods while the runners are trying to reset their seeds.”

”Already handled,” Rowan said. ”We have private green rooms for the creators and a separate warm-up bay for the tournament finalists. Everything’s locked down tight. See you on the floor tomorrow afternoon?”

”I’ll be there at four,” Daniel said. ”Don’t worry.”

”Later, boss.”

Rowan dropped off the line, leaving Tom still on the other end.

”Well,” Tom sighed loudly, ”sounds like your week is completely ruined by video games again. Which means I have to do all the actual work.”

”You love the work, Tom,” Daniel smiled. ”Don’t pretend you don’t enjoy watching French literary agents sweat.”

”I despise them, Daniel,” Tom said dryly. ”They speak three languages, and they’re condescending in all of them. Get out of your chair, go look at your live-action ballroom designs, and let me buy your fairy tale.”

”Talk soon, Tom.”

Daniel hung up, setting the phone down on the leather blotter.

The room fell back into its deep, sunny quiet.

He picked up the brass pen, leaned over the blank legal pad, and in clean, deliberate cursive, wrote three words at the top of the first page:

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Beneath the title, he began to sketch out the structural architecture of the narrative.

He didn’t want a cartoonish parody. He didn’t want modern, sarcastic self-awareness where the characters winked at the audience to prove they were too sophisticated for a fairy tale.

He wanted the cold, biting bite of winter in eighteenth-century provincial France. The smell of woodsmoke and damp wool in a village that was small-minded, claustrophobic, and suspicious of anyone who read books. A Belle who wasn’t just pretty, but sharp, stubborn, and quietly suffocating under the narrow expectations of her world.

And for the Beast—the curse needed to feel like a real, physical disease. Not just some fur glued to an actor’s cheeks, but a massive, terrifying creature of bone, muscle, fur, and horns, moving with the brutal, predatory agility of a wild animal, slowly losing the ability to stand upright as the last petals fell from the rose.

The balance between Rick Carter’s practical sets and digital enhancement was already forming in his mind.

The ballroom couldn’t be a green room. It had to be a three-story, physical reality built on a Saint Fernando Valley soundstage. Real parquet floors polished to a mirror shine so the silk gowns could glide across them without catching; twenty-four massive crystal chandeliers hanging from steel gantry cables, wired with thousands of tiny, real incandescent bulbs that gave off that warm, buttery, amber glow that digital post-processing could never truly replicate.

Then, when the camera moved outside the tall arched windows, that was where the digital canvas took over—the sprawling, gothic silhouette of the castle perched precariously on a jagged mountain peak, surrounded by a dark, frozen forest of twisted black pines, whipped by digital blizzards that made the interior warmth feel fragile and sacred.

The soft click of the study door opening broke his concentration.

Daniel looked up.

Margot was standing in the doorway, leaning against the dark jamb with her arms crossed, wearing a pair of faded denim cutoffs and a white linen shirt with the cuffs rolled up to her elbows. Her blonde hair was loose, falling around her shoulders, and she had an unhurried, knowing smirk on her face.

Behind her, Florence slipped past, wearing an oversized graphic t-shirt that reached her mid-thighs, barefoot, carrying a small ceramic bowl of fresh green grapes.

Scarlett brought up the rear, wearing a soft grey sleeveless tank, her hair tied back in a messy knot with a tortoiseshell clip, holding two cold cans of water between her fingers.

The three of them walked into the room with that easy, synchronized physical confidence that had defined the house for the past month.

”Look at him,” Florence said, popping a grape into her mouth and pointing a finger at the desk. ”The pen is out. The yellow pad is on the desk. Pretty sure the era of fun just left this house.”

Margot walked over, resting both hands on the edge of the walnut desk, leaning forward until she was eye-level with him. Her blue eyes flicked down to the three words written at the top of the pad.

Her eyebrows arched slightly. A slow, genuinely surprised smile spread across her lips.

”Well, well, well,” Margot murmured, her voice carrying that sweet, low Australian drawl. ”Look who’s getting romantic. Beauty and the Beast?”

Scarlett stepped up beside her, leaning a hip against the desk, cracking open one of the water cans with a sharp hiss. She took a sip, looking down at the legal pad, her hazel-green eyes narrowing with deep amusement.

”A musical, Miller?” Scarlett asked, her husky voice purring with dry sarcasm. ”Really? You’re going from blowing up city blocks in Cleveland to singing teapots?”

”There are no singing teapots yet,” Daniel said, resting his hands behind his head, looking up at the three of them with an easy, unbothered smirk. ”And it’s not just a musical. It’s an epic.”

”Oh, of course it is,” Florence groaned theatrically, walking around the desk and casually sitting down on the edge of Daniel’s leather chair armrest, resting her bare shoulder against his. ”Because God forbid Daniel Miller makes a simple ninety-minute movie where two people just talk in a room. It has to be an epic. Are you going to hire four hundred French stonemasons to build a real castle in the Alps?”

”Rick Carter’s handling the production design,” Daniel said, reaching up to casually rest his hand on Florence’s bare knee. ”And Alan Menken is writing the music.”

Margot’s eyes widened slightly. The teasing faded for half a second, replaced by that sharp, commercial intelligence she always possessed. ”Menken? Truly?”

”Tom’s closing the rights package right now,” Daniel nodded. ”If everything goes well, Menken flies in next week to start the piano arrangements.”

”God,” Margot whispered, shaking her head with an appreciative laugh. ”You really don’t mess around, do you? You spend four weeks digging virtual dirt in the basement with us, and the second you sit at your desk, you hire a living legend to write an entire score.”

Scarlett leaned down, resting both forearms on the wood, looking directly into Daniel’s eyes with a slow, intensely alluring smile that had a distinct edge of mischief to it.

”So,” Scarlett purred softly, tilting her head, ”who’s playing Belle, Captain? Are you holding private auditions in the living room, or do we have to start brushing up on our French accents?”

Margot chuckled, leaning in beside Scarlett, her shoulder brushing against Scarlett’s arm. ”Don’t look at me. I can carry a tune in the shower, but if you put me in front of an eighty-piece orchestra next to Alan Menken, I will embarrass this entire family.”

”I can sing,” Florence volunteered cheerfully, tossing another grape into the air and catching it in her mouth. ”I have a lovely, raspy alto. I’d make a brilliant, chaotic Belle. I could hit Gaston over the head with a heavy French loaf and throw the Beast out a window.”

”You’d make a terrifying Belle, Flo,” Daniel laughed, his fingers gently squeezing her knee. ”Gaston would be running for his life in the first ten minutes.”

”Good,” Florence sniffed proudly. ”The man’s an arrogant bore. He deserves a concussion.”

Scarlett took another slow sip of her water, her eyes never leaving Daniel’s face. The humor in her gaze deepened into something quiet, warm, and distinctly intimate.

”You’ve been thinking about this for days, haven’t you?” Scarlett said softly. ”Even while you were building that ridiculous redstone sorter under our digital house.”

”A little,” Daniel admitted. ”The genre’s been stagnant. People think musicals have to be light, fluffy, and staged like Broadway revues filmed on soundstages. But if you ground the world—if you treat the fairy tale with the same visual weight, the same physical grandeur, and the same emotional stakes as a historical drama—it stops being a novelty. It becomes something that stays with people for thirty years.”

Margot looked down at the pad, her fingers gently tracing the edge of the yellow paper, her expression softening into something deeply affectionate.

”It’s going to be gorgeous, Dan,” Margot said quietly, her voice warm and sincere. ”You know how to make people care about things they thought they were too cynical to love.”

”Thanks,” Daniel said.

”Don’t get too sentimental yet, Captain,” Scarlett interrupted with a dry smirk, tapping the top of his desk. ”Elena called me twenty minutes ago while you were on the phone with Tom. She said you have a four-day live tournament starting tomorrow, and you promised to sit on camera for forty hours.”

”Thirty hours,” Daniel corrected.

”Same difference,” Florence sighed, leaning her head against Daniel’s temple, her short hair tickling his cheek. ”Which means no more late-night LAN raids for the rest of the week. Barnaby the he-cow is going to miss you terribly, Daniel.”

”Barnaby will survive,” Daniel said, turning his head slightly to look at Florence, then at Margot, then at Scarlett.

The three of them were standing close around the desk, their physical presence natural, comfortable, and completely integrated into the space. There was no territorial posturing, no lingering tension from the crazy press cycles of the last month, and no distance.

They were his foundation. They roasted him without mercy, kept him from vanishing into his own head, and stood by him whenever the studio machine began to roar.

Daniel reached out, catching Margot’s hand where it rested on the mahogany, his thumb lightly stroking the back of her knuckles.

”The tournament doesn’t start until tomorrow night,” Daniel murmured, his voice dropping into that low, quiet register that made Margot’s eyes darken slightly with sudden focus. ”And Tom has the lawyers handled until morning.”

Scarlett caught the shift in his tone instantly. A slow, wicked, entirely knowing grin spread across her lips. She set her water down on the edge of the desk with a soft, definitive click.

”Is that right?” Scarlett whispered, taking half a step closer to his chair.

”That’s right,” Daniel said, looking between the three of them. ”The legal pad isn’t going anywhere. And I’m officially off the clock until tomorrow afternoon.”

Florence slid off the armrest of his chair, landing lightly on her bare feet, her eyes dancing with pure, unfiltered mischief. She looked at Margot, then at Scarlett, and gave a sharp, deliberate nod.

”Well,” Florence said, turning toward the study door with a casual sway of her hips, ”I do believe the master bedroom has a lock on the door, and the air conditioning is set to sixty-eight.”

Margot smiled, a breathless, smoky laugh escaping her lips as she leaned down, pressing her lips softly against Daniel’s jaw, her breath warm against his skin.

”Leave the pen on the desk, Daniel,” Margot whispered against his ear. ”Fairy tales can wait until tomorrow.”

Scarlett reached out, her fingers lightly catching the collar of his navy polo, tugging him gently out of his chair.

Daniel didn’t argue.

He set the brass pen down in the groove of the pad, left the yellow paper sitting beneath the warm lamplight, and followed them out of the study, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind them as the house slipped into the quiet warmth of the California afternoon.
