The Maker: Hollywood

The massive steel framework of the converted aircraft hangar near the southern edge of Culver City had taken five round-the-clock shifts to transform.

Daniel had plenty of cavernous soundstages across town in Burbank and out in the San Fernando Valley, but those were film facilities—soundproofed, climate-sealed, and currently choked with practical sets, lighting rigs, and locked production units. Culver City was the home of Miller Interactive. When Daniel decided that the finals of the Crown of Blocks needed an in-person arena for the speedrunners and a live production hub, he didn’t bother trying to cram an esports setup into the game studio’s office park.

He just rented the largest open-span hangar on the regional airfield property, brought in union rigging crews forty-eight hours before registration closed, and told them to build a colosseum.

By Wednesday morning, the place was barely recognizable.

A circular sixty-foot suspended truss held an array of high-density LED displays that mirrored every active feed directly down to the floor. Sixteen isolated glass-walled competitor booths sat in a wide semicircle, each wired with isolated local fiber runs, noise-canceling headsets, and backup uninterruptible power supplies. In the center, raised four feet above the concrete, sat a wide, matte-black caster desk equipped with studio microphones and multiple confidence monitors.

Above it all, the branding was clean: simple stone-and-dirt pixel textures, the banner of the 1st Annual Crown of Blocks Championship, and the twin logos of Miller Interactive and Twitch.

Getting the broadcast distribution locked down hadn’t even required an agent meeting. Twitch’s chief executive had personally called Daniel on his private cell the hour the tournament was announced. The platform had practically begged to co-stream the entire five-day marathon alongside Miller Interactive’s official YouTube channel, offering an unprecedented ninety-five to five revenue split on all subscriptions, bits, and ad revenue generated during the broadcast. In this industry, with Twitch being steered by a leadership group that actually prioritized server stability and creator goodwill rather than squeezing their talent, Daniel had agreed without a second thought. Gamers lived on Twitch; YouTube was great for high-bitrate archives, but the raw, unhinged culture of live chat lived on purple servers.

At midnight on Wednesday, the first phase quietly came to an end.

The submission portal for the Community Design Initiative locked down.

Over seventy-five thousand digital concept files had been uploaded by players, modders, and digital painters from every continent. For the next forty-eight hours, the community voting module embedded inside The Forge launcher was a blur of traffic, registering millions of player ballots to whittle the mountain of art down to the fifty highest-rated entries.

By Friday afternoon, the art leads at Miller Interactive had finished their secondary pass, and Daniel spent an hour in the production trailer reviewing the final batch on a high-resolution tablet.

They weren’t looking for hyper-complex digital paintings that looked like concept art for a sci-fi shooter. They were looking for things that actually felt like *Minecraft*—designs that respected the rigid sixteen-by-sixteen pixel grid while giving players new ways to express themselves inside the survival sandbox.

The ten winners covered the full spectrum of community creativity:

* A hand-drawn series of twelve decorative Renaissance-style oil paintings, complete with dark oak frames, meant to hang above in-game hearths.

* Four intricate copper and iron armor-trim patterns that allowed players to personalize their chestplates with contrasting metallic lines.

* A set of glazed terracotta floor tiles featuring geometric mosaic patterns that matched perfectly when placed in four-block quadrants.

* A weathered stone gargoyle block designed to sit on roof corners, doubling as a discreet downspout for rain water particles.

Ten independent artists—some sixteen-year-old high school kids drawing with basic pixel software on an old tablet, others veteran digital illustrators—woke up to official notifications in their inboxes. Each had a clean ten-thousand-dollar cash grant wired directly to their accounts, and Rowan’s integration engineers had already imported the raw sprite sheets into the master branch for Version 1.0. When the full game launched in two months, those ten assets would be permanent, native parts of the game’s code, with each creator’s handle permanently etched into the tooltip item descriptions.

---

Saturday morning arrived with bright, clean California sunlight cutting through the high industrial windows of the Culver City hangar.

The building was already alive with the low, steady roar of roughly a thousand spectators who had managed to snag lottery tickets for the physical floor seating, while the live stream across Twitch and YouTube had quietly crested one point eight million concurrent viewers before the main desk had even gone live.

On the Twitch chat panel, the emote wall was flying by at a speed that caused low-end browser tabs to crash: `pepeJAM`, `catJAM`, `Pog`, `KEKW`, `monkaW`, and a continuous wave of `DANIEL_GIGACHAD`.

At precisely 10:00 AM, the cameras went live.

Daniel sat at the center of the caster desk, wearing a simple black Miller Interactive hoodie with the sleeves pushed up to his forearms, a low-profile broadcast headset resting over his ears. Sitting to his left was Rowan, who had actually managed to put on a clean black denim jacket over his work shirt, while to Daniel’s right was Leo, a popular, fast-talking community caster known for his encyclopedic knowledge of game mechanics.

”Morning, everyone,” Daniel said into the microphone, his voice cutting through the arena’s PA system with that calm, grounded weight that immediately brought the room to heel. ”Welcome to Culver City, and welcome to the finals of the First Annual Crown of Blocks.”

The crowd on the floor erupted into an immediate wave of cheers, stomping their sneakers on the concrete.

”We’ve got a massive weekend ahead of us,” Daniel continued, leaning an elbow on the desk. ”The Community Design winners were locked yesterday afternoon—ten grand each, and their blocks are officially in the Version 1.0 build right now. But today, we start giving away the real money.”

Rowan leaned into his mic, grinning at his monitor. ”First up is the creative side. We had seventy-two hours on the clock for The Master Builders. Eighty thousand teams dropped onto flat plots with infinite creative inventories, and the prompt was simple: Ancient Forgotten Empires. The community vote ran for the last twenty-four hours to give us the top ten, and now we’re going to walk through them.”

Leo tapped his keyboard, pulling up the live spectator server on the arena’s massive overhead LED ring. ”And the cool part, chat, is that Dan isn’t just looking at screenshots like some geezer in a boardroom. We’ve got him dropped into the spectator server right now.”

On screen, Daniel’s official avatar—a simple, custom skin wearing a dark leather jerkin—appeared hovering high above a massive flat terrain plot.

Daniel took the mouse and keyboard on his desk, clicking into free-flight mode.

The crowd gasped.

The build occupying the screen wasn’t just a castle or a big house. It was a sprawling, subterranean sunken necropolis that stretched across an entire sixteen-chunk radius.

The builders—a three-man team from Germany calling themselves The Stonecutters—had hollowed out an artificial underground cavern beneath a layer of jagged slate rocks. Suspended in the center of the darkness by massive, rotting iron chains built out of polished basalt blocks was the colossal skeleton of an ancient leviathan, its ribcage forming the vaulted arches of a forgotten imperial throne room. Below the skeleton, channels of glowing green slime blocks and hidden glowstone simulated radioactive, stagnant water flowing past crumbling marble pillars and half-collapsed amphitheaters.

”Look at the scale of that,” Daniel said, flying his avatar smoothly through the mouth of the giant skull, coming to a hover right above the central throne. ”Look at the ribcage. They used smooth quartz stairs to give the bone texture actual curves. That’s hours of manual block placement just to keep the anatomy consistent. And look at the lighting down there—no harsh torch spam. They hid the light sources beneath moss carpets to keep the shadows long and moody.”

”It’s ridiculous,” Rowan agreed, shaking his head. ”They hit the build height limit at block two-fifty-six on the upper spires, and they carved all the way down to block five above bedrock. That’s nearly two hundred vertical blocks of solid, continuous architecture.”

The review moved through the remaining nine finalists over the next two hours:

* A towering desert citadel built out of red sandstone and gold blocks, featuring a functioning water-wheel aqueduct that fed terraced hanging gardens.

* A ruined gothic cathedral partially swallowed by a massive, twisting tree constructed from thousands of dark oak logs and flowering azalea leaf blocks.

* An ancient Mayan-style ziggurat hidden deep inside an artificial jungle, complete with working redstone piston traps that triggered arrow dispensers in the hallways.

When the final tally was calculated—combining the seventy percent public vote weight with the thirty percent panel score from Daniel, Rowan, and the studio’s art directors—*The Stonecutters* took first place.

The overhead screen flashed their team handles in massive gold lettering: 1ST PLACE – THE STONECUTTERS ($120,000).

The German trio, streaming their reaction from a shared apartment in Berlin, could be heard over the arena audio feeds literally screaming in German, knocking over chairs and sobbing into their webcams while chat flooded with `W_BUILDERS` and `PagMan`. The rest of the $300,000 creative purse was distributed cleanly down through tenth place, ensuring every single team that made the live stage walked away with at least ten to fifteen thousand dollars for their seventy-two hours of work.

”Alright,” Daniel said, taking a sip from a bottle of water on the desk as the stage crew prepped the sixteen glass pods. ”Art is done. Architecture is done. Now let’s watch some people ruin their blood pressure.”

---

At 2:00 PM, the atmosphere in the hangar shifted from artistic appreciation to pure, concentrated sweat.

The Speedathon was ready to roll.

The sixteen qualified runners had taken their seats inside the glass booths. Each player had their own customized peripherals—clacking mechanical keyboards with custom switches, high-DPI mice, and oversized mousepads. Behind each booth stood a certified tournament referee wearing a black headset, keeping an unblinking eye on their physical monitor and input logs to guarantee absolute competitive integrity.

The format was ruthless: eight runners in the Random-Seed bracket, eight runners in the Set-Seed bracket. Single-elimination head-to-head heats. Two runners spawn on the exact same world generation simultaneously; the first one to land the killing blow on the Ender Dragon and trigger the exit portal advances.

Daniel leaned forward, watching the split-screen monitors.

In the first round of the Random-Seed heat, a nineteen-year-old French runner named Veloce faced off against an American collegiate player named Kip.

”Look at the spawn,” Leo called out rapidly into his mic. ”Veloce gets an oak forest with exposed stone cliffs right off the rip. Kip spawns on a gravel beach near an ocean. Watch the immediate routing, Dan.”

”Kip’s going straight for the water,” Daniel observed, his eyes tracking the two player perspectives on the console. ”He’s looking for an underwater ruin or a shipwreck. If you find a chest with iron nuggets and wheat in the first thirty seconds, you skip twenty minutes of surface mining entirely.”

”And Veloce isn’t even making a wooden pickaxe,” Rowan pointed out, laughing. ”He punched three logs, made a crafting table, made an axe, and he’s sprinting for the desert. He’s hunting for a village.”

The speed and precision inside the pods was terrifying.

These weren’t casual players building nice timber cottages. Their hands moved over the keyboards with machine-like twitch reflexes. Inventory management happened in fractions of a second—shift-clicking, dropping junk blocks with quick keyboard strokes, dragging materials across crafting tables without even looking at the recipes.

When Kip spotted an exposed surface lava pool near a desert temple ten minutes into the run, the crowd gasped.

”Portal setup incoming!” Leo yelled.

Kip didn’t spend ten minutes mining obsidian with a diamond pickaxe. He carried two iron buckets of water. With lightning-fast right-clicks, he cast a cobblestone frame, poured water over the lava source blocks, sculpted a clean ten-block obsidian portal frame out of the molten rock in under twelve seconds, lit it with a flint and steel, and vanished into the Nether before Veloce had even found his third piece of raw iron.

”There’s the bucket trick,” Daniel said, a grin breaking across his face. ”Cast-iron construction on the fly. No diamond mining required. That’s pure muscle memory.”

The finals of the Random-Seed bracket came down to Kip and a quiet, unassuming eighteen-year-old from South Korea handle named Dohyun.

Both runners hit the End dimension within fifteen seconds of each other, having tracked the underground stronghold using flying eyes of ender with terrifying mathematical precision.

The arena went dead silent. The only sound in the hangar was the rhythmic, frantic clatter of mechanical switches echoing through the referees’ microphones.

On the overhead screens, both players were perched on the obsidian pillars of the End dimension. The massive, black, purple-eyed dragon circled the central bedrock fountain, letting out a deafening roar.

Dohyun didn’t shoot down the healing crystals. He jumped down to the bedrock fountain, waited for the dragon to perch, placed an explosive bed down on the stone, placed a single block of cobblestone between himself and the pillow to absorb the blast damage, and right-clicked the bed.

BOOM.

The bed exploded with concussive force, tearing a massive chunk of health off the dragon’s bar while Dohyun took barely two hearts of damage behind his stone block.

Click-place-BOOM.

Click-place-BOOM.

Click-place-BOOM.

Four consecutive bed detonations in less than six seconds.

The dragon let out its final, screeching death cry, bursting into a blinding shower of purple experience orbs that rained down over the bedrock portal.

Text popped onto the screen: DOHYUN HAS FREED THE END.

Final Time: 24 minutes, 18 seconds.

The hangar erupted. Dohyun threw his hands off his keyboard, leaning his head back against his headrest, breathing hard as the referee tapped him on the shoulder to confirm the victory.

”Twenty-four minutes!” Leo screamed into the microphone. ”Twenty-four minutes from zero to dead dragon on an unseeded world! He’s a maniac!”

Daniel clapped his hands together, smiling as the South Korean teenager stepped out of his glass booth to bow politely to the cheering crowd. ”That’s three hundred thousand dollars well spent. That kid plays like he’s coded for this.”

---

By 6:00 PM on Saturday, the hangar had cleared out, the maintenance crews were sweeping the floor, and Daniel was sitting in the quiet interior of his private production trailer parked near the tarmac outside.

He was nursing a cup of black tea, his phone resting on the laminate table.

The phone vibrated with a sharp, heavy hum. The caller ID flashed: Tom.

Daniel swiped the green icon, holding the phone to his ear. ”Tell me we’re not flying to Paris.”

”We’re not flying to Paris,” Tom’s voice came through, completely flat, followed by the sound of ice cubes clinking inside a glass of whiskey. ”It’s done, Dan. All of it.”

Daniel leaned back against the faux-leather cushions of the banquette, his eyes narrowing slightly. ”Clean?”

”Airtight,” Tom said, exhaling a long, smoky breath. ”The contracts were executed twenty minutes ago through their maritime trust in Geneva. Worldwide rights in perpetuity across all mediums: theatrical, live-action adaptation, grand musical performance rights, international broadcast, digital distribution, and physical merchandising. No grandfather clauses, no sunset provisions, and no profit-participation backdoors for distant cousins.”

”How much did they squeeze out of us?”

”Eighteen million up front,” Tom grunted. ”Which is an absolute steal when you realize what we’re holding. The literary trust was basically ready to roll over. They’ve been sitting on those rights for decades, collecting dust.”

Daniel smiled faintly. ”They didn’t hear anything from Burbank?”

”Who, Disney?” Tom let out a dry, contemptuous bark of a laugh that echoed through the receiver. ”Dan, Disney couldn’t buy a hot dog from a street cart right now without their creditor committee holding a four-hour emergency review.

”They’re in absolute freefall. Their stock touched a nine-year low on Friday after the SEC expanded the probe into their offshore shell accounting. Amazon is hovering over Century City like a starving buzzard waiting to buy their library for forty cents on the dollar, and their board is currently engaged in a full-blown civil war over who takes the blame for their distribution collapse.”

Tom took a slow sip of his drink.

”They had their chance with the fairy tale thirty years ago,” Tom continued, his voice dropping into that cold, pragmatic business reality they both knew so well. ”They made that mediocre, middle-of-the-road 2D animated movie that barely broke even at the box office, decided the IP was a dead-end money loser, and let their one-off option lapse like idiots because they couldn’t see past their next quarterly spreadsheet.

”By the time their legal department realized we were at the table in Paris, our wire had already cleared through the escrow bank. They don’t have the cash to outbid us, they don’t have the leverage to file an injunction, and they sure as hell don’t have the creative reputation left to convince an estate to trust them with a classic. Beauty and the Beast belongs to Miller Studios now. Completely.”

Daniel looked out the small window of the trailer. Beyond the tarmac, the sun was sinking behind the Santa Monica mountains, casting a long, amber glow over the industrial roofs of Culver City.

”Good work, Tom,” Daniel said softly. ”Truly. Did you reach Rick Carter?”

”Rick’s in,” Tom said, his tone perking up. ”He loved the idea of the practical baroque ballroom with the digital alpine extensions. He’s already pulling references from historical châteaux in the Loire Valley. And Menken’s assistant confirmed he’s landing at Van Nuys on Tuesday afternoon. The man is seventy-seven years old and he told me on the phone that he hasn’t been this excited to sit down at a piano in twenty years.”

”Have the Burbank bungalow prepped for him,” Daniel instructed. ”Get a Steinway grand tuned and moved into the private lounge, and stock the pantry with whatever bourbon he drinks.”

”Already taken care of,” Tom said. ”Now, go finish your video game circus so we can get back to making real movies on Monday.”

”Talk tomorrow, Tom.”

Daniel tapped the screen, setting the phone face-down on the table.

He sat in the silence for a minute, feeling the pieces locking into place. The machine was moving. The legal foundation was cemented. The fairy tale was theirs.

He stood up, stretched his shoulders, and walked back out into the cool evening air toward the hangar. Tomorrow was the big one.

---

Sunday at 1:00 PM.

The hangar was packed to absolute maximum fire-code capacity. Over twelve hundred spectators filled the floor risers, while the combined broadcast across Twitch and YouTube had shattered every single concurrent viewership metric in internet history, hovering at an unbelievable 3.4 million concurrent viewers.

Twitch’s engineering status page had literally posted a public tweet thanking Miller Interactive for giving them a week’s notice to scale up their edge servers, noting that the platform had not experienced a single packet drop despite handling the largest gaming traffic spike in their company’s history.

On screen, the caster desk was fully assembled.

Daniel sat between Rowan and Leo, looking completely energized, wearing a simple grey henley.

”Alright, chat,” Leo said, his voice crackling with genuine, uncontainable excitement into his microphone. ”This is it. The grand finale. The one you’ve all been waiting for. The Last Block Standing.”

Rowan clicked his mouse, pulling up the live spectator map on the massive overhead LED ring.

The arena was an absolute work of brutal, beautiful art.

It was a two-thousand-block custom map designed as a sprawling, decaying post-apocalyptic stone city. Crumbling stone cathedrals with shattered stained glass, collapsed aqueducts, ruined residential blocks, and dark, flooded sewer systems beneath the cobblestone streets, all surrounded by an impassable perimeter of sheer, icy granite cliffs.

”The rules are simple,” Rowan explained to the millions watching. ”One hundred players drop into the circle. Fifty open-qualifier sweatlords who fought through a week of brutal online brackets to earn their spots, and fifty of the biggest creators and streamers in the space.

”No starter kits. No pre-assigned gear. Everyone drops with empty hands. There are three tiers of supply chests hidden across the ruins—Tier 1 in the perimeter houses, Tier 2 in the central municipal plazas, and Tier 3 in the high-danger hotspots like the cathedral altar and the sewer depths. Permadeath. No respawns. The world border shrinks every three minutes, forcing everyone into the central amphitheater.

”Six hundred thousand dollars total purse. Two hundred and fifty thousand to first place. One hundred thousand to second. Fifty thousand to third. And cash prizes paying out all the way down to twentieth place.”

”And Dan,” Leo turned to him with a grin, ”you’re in the spectator rig again?”

”I’m in,” Daniel smiled, clicking his mouse.

On the broadcast, Daniel’s spectator avatar hovered high above the center of the ruined city.

Surrounding the perimeter on high glass platforms were the one hundred player avatars, standing locked in place as a sixty-second countdown timer ticked down in the center of the sky:

00:15... 00:14... 00:13...

The Twitch chat was moving so violently that the text had become a single, vibrating wall of color:

`LETS_GOOOOO`: HERE WE GO PagMan

`JaxArmy`: JAX TAKE MY ENERGY catJAM

`PvPKings`: THE SWEATS ARE GOING TO DESTROY THE STREAMERS LULW

`BloodBath`: 250K ON THE LINE HOLY SHIT

`Clueless`: Clueless ”it’s just a friendly game”

`GIGACHAD`: DANIEL CASTING PEAK CINEMA

Inside his home studio in Austin, Texas, Jack—Jax—sat in his gaming chair, his palms literally sweating against his rubberized mouse grips.

He looked around his glass spawn platform. To his left was a notorious German PvP sweatlord named Kaiser who had spent the last two weeks practicing thirty-click-per-second sword mechanics on dedicated combat servers; to his right was another variety streamer who looked like he was about to vomit into his webcam.

”Okay,” Jack muttered to his private stream chat, where eighty thousand of his own viewers were watching his first-person perspective. ”We are not ego-challenging the middle. The middle is an absolute death trap. The sweats are going to kill each other over iron chestplates in the first thirty seconds. We play the rat. We play the perimeter.”

00:03... 00:02... 00:01...

MATCH START.

The glass platforms disappeared.

A hundred avatars plummeted toward the ruined city below.

The sound of opening chests, breaking glass, and frantic sprinting echoed across the arena.

Daniel’s spectator camera swooped down over the central plaza.

It was an immediate, unadulterated bloodbath.

Twelve players had dropped straight onto the Tier 3 golden chests sitting in the fountain square. Within fifteen seconds, the killfeed in the upper-right corner began scrolling at terrifying speed:

* Kaiser slaughtered Pewter using Iron Sword

* ShadowBlade shot xX_Gamer_Xx with Bow

* Vortex fell from a high place

* Slayer killed BigMouth using Stone Axe

”Look at the carnage in the fountain,” Daniel laughed on the caster desk, smoothly rotating his camera around a vicious four-man melee where players were trading jumping critical hits with stone axes. ”Total chaos. People are fighting with raw fists and sticks just to get an iron helmet. That’s eight people dead before the first border shrink.”

”And look at the perimeter,” Rowan pointed out, switching a confidence monitor to Jax’s perspective. ”Jax is playing it like a survival horror game.”

Jack had dropped into the basement of a crumbling baker’s shop on the extreme northern edge of the map.

He didn’t fight anyone. He quietly looted two Tier 1 wooden chests, finding three pieces of bread, five raw iron nuggets, a leather tunic, and a single wooden shovel.

He didn’t run out into the street. He used the shovel to dig through the dirt floor of the bakery, dropping down into the sewer conduits below, completely bypassing the street-level sniper fire.

”Smart,” Daniel noted on stream, his voice warm with genuine appreciation. ”He’s not playing for YouTube clip highlights; he’s playing for twentieth place and the money. The sewers have clean line-of-sight protection from the archers on the roofs.”

By the ten-minute mark, the world border had shrunk twice, grinding through stone walls and crushing outer buildings into sparkling blue particle dust.

The player count had plummeted from 100 down to 34.

Jack was still alive.

He had scavenged enough iron from dead player death-crates left in the sewers to craft a full set of iron armor, an iron sword, and—most importantly—a wooden shield.

He crouched behind a half-collapsed brick archway, listening to the footsteps above his head.

Suddenly, the cobblestone ceiling above him collapsed.

A player clad in full enchanted chainmail armor—a high-ranked arena qualifier named *Riptide*—dropped straight into the sewer water five blocks in front of Jack, drawing an iron broadsword.

Jack didn’t panic.

He held up his shield.

CLANG.

Riptide’s jumping critical strike hit the oak shield with a sharp metallic reverberation, completely absorbing the damage.

Jack instantly dropped his shield, stepped into Riptide’s hitbox, and landed a vicious, rising critical hit with his iron sword, followed by a point-blank punch with an empty hand to throw off the opponent’s crosshair tracking.

Riptide tried to back up, but the narrow sewer brick wall caught his shoulder.

Jack swung three more times with mechanical, cold rhythm: *Thwack-thwack-thwack.*

The killfeed popped:

Jax killed Riptide using Iron Sword.

The Twitch chat watching Jax’s perspective went completely unglued:

`JaxPvP`: HE KILLED A SWEAT PagMan

`TheRatKing`: THE SEWER RAT STRIKES

`EZ_CLAP`: HE ACTUALLY HAS HANDS

`ShieldGod`: THAT SHIELD BLOCK WAS CLEAN

In Austin, Jack let out a loud, breathless gasp, wiping his sweaty forehead with his sleeve while his hands shook violently. ”Oh my god. Oh my god. He had four golden apples. He had four golden apples in his bag!”

He scooped up the golden apples, chugged one for the regeneration hearts, and sprinted down the tunnel as the blue border wall began to grind into the rear of the sewer.

By the twenty-minute mark, the arena had contracted into a tiny, claustrophobic circle barely eighty blocks wide, centered squarely on the crumbling stone amphitheater in the heart of the ruins.

Only five players remained alive out of the original hundred.

The crowd in the Culver City hangar was on their feet. Nobody was sitting down.

Daniel leaned forward against the desk, his eyes locked on the spectator feed.

The final five:

Kaiser – The German PvP monster, wearing enchanted iron armor, holding an enchanted diamond sword with ten player kills to his name.

2. Solus – A quiet, eighteen-year-old high school qualifier from Chicago who had played an immaculate tactical game from the rooftops with a high-power bow.

3. Bramble – An underdog survival specialist from Canada wearing mismatched leather and gold armor.

4. Jax – Sitting on three golden apples, scarred iron armor, holding a battered shield and an iron sword.

5. Dusk – A veteran speedrunner who had scavenged three splash potions of poison from an underground vault.

”Look at the positioning,” Daniel called out, his voice sharp and focused. ”Kaiser holds the central podium. He has the diamond weapon, but he’s exposed on three sides. Solus has the high ground on the broken arch, but the border is going to force him off that ledge in forty seconds.”

Dusk made the first move, sprinting out from behind a pillar, hurling a splash potion of poison directly at Kaiser’s feet.

Kaiser saw it coming, executed a flawless side-strafe, and leaped forward with a terrifying sprint-crit that hit Dusk square in the neck.

Dusk turned to run, but Solus fired an arrow from the high archway—thwip-CRACK—pinning Dusk against the wall.

Kaiser followed up with a sweeping blow.

Kaiser killed Dusk using Diamond Sword.

4 Players Remaining.

Bramble tried to sneak around the rear of the amphitheater steps, but Kaiser turned like a wolf smelling blood, closing the gap in three seconds, landing two brutal axe strikes that shattered Bramble’s shield and sent him flying into the burning border wall.

Bramble was pricked to death by World Border.

3 Players Remaining.

”It’s Jax, Kaiser, and Solus!” Leo screamed into the microphone, his voice cracking with pure adrenaline. ”The streamer and the two top qualifiers! Three hundred thousand dollars on the line right now!”

The border began its final, lethal collapse.

The circle was thirty blocks wide.

Solus was forced to drop from his high archway, landing on the amphitheater stones with a hard grunt of fall damage.

The second his boots hit the stone, Kaiser was on him.

The two tournament qualifiers clashed in an absolute masterclass of high-tier combat—placing water buckets to disrupt movement, executing rapid block-hitting, tracking heads with millimeter precision.

Solus landed two incredible close-range bow shots, dropping Kaiser down to four hearts, but Kaiser’s diamond sword damage was too heavy. Kaiser slipped behind Solus’s shield with a sweeping strike, finishing him off with a leaping critical.

Kaiser killed Solus using Diamond Sword.

2 Players Remaining.

1ST PLACE MATCH: KAISER vs. JAX.

The Culver City hangar detonated into a wall of sound.

”It’s Jack and Kaiser!” Rowan yelled, grabbing Daniel’s arm. ”Kaiser has four hearts left! Jax has full health and one golden apple!”

In Austin, Jack’s facecam showed him completely locked in, his teeth clenched, his eyes wide behind his glasses.

He didn’t hesitate. He ate his final golden apple, pulled his iron sword back, and charged straight down the amphitheater steps at the most feared combat player on the server.

Kaiser didn’t run. He turned, his diamond blade gleaming in the virtual twilight.

They collided in the center of the ring.

CLANG.

Jack blocked the first strike with his shield. He dropped the shield, swung—thwack—landing a solid hit on Kaiser’s chestplate.

Kaiser’s health dropped to two hearts.

Jack swung again—

Kaiser executed a frame-perfect, horizontal sprint-strafe, ducking under Jack’s crosshair, sliding cleanly to Jack’s blind left side.

Before Jack could whip his mouse around to bring his shield back up, Kaiser swung his diamond sword upward in a lightning-fast double-tap critical strike.

CRACK.

CRACK.

The screen flashed blinding red.

Jack’s avatar was launched three blocks backward, hitting the stone floor, collapsing into a puff of grey smoke, leaving his iron armor and sword scattered across the flags.

The killfeed popped in massive, golden text across the sky:

Kaiser killed Jax using Diamond Sword.

VICTORY ROYALE.

KAISER IS THE LAST BLOCK STANDING.

The arena screen flared into a blinding celebration of golden fireworks, streaming confetti particles, and massive embossed lettering:

1ST PLACE – KAISER ($250,000)

2ND PLACE – JAX ($100,000)

3RD PLACE – SOLUS ($50,000)

In Austin, Jack stared at his death screen for two seconds, completely motionless.

Then, he threw his hands over his head, kicked his chair backward, and burst into a loud, hysterical, completely delighted laugh that shook his room.

”SECOND PLACE!” Jack screamed at the top of his lungs, pointing at his webcam. ”ONE HUNDRED GRAND! WE TOOK SECOND PLACE! THE SEWER RAT WINS A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS!”

His chat was moving so fast the Twitch video feed literally lagged for three seconds under the influx of hundred-dollar donation alerts and gifted subscriptions:

`W_JAX`: THE SEWER RAT DID IT PagMan

`KaiserChad`: KAISER IS A LITERAL GOD

`100K_MOMENT`: 100 GRAND FOR SECOND PLACE W

`GIGACHAD`: WHAT A FINALS

`HistoricEvent`: BEST TOURNAMENT IN ESPORTS HISTORY

Back on the caster desk in Culver City, the crowd was giving a standing ovation that rattled the steel beams of the hangar.

Daniel leaned into his microphone, smiling warmly as he watched the celebrations across both feeds.

”What an absolute battle,” Daniel said, his voice cutting through the cheering crowd with calm, authoritative grace. ”Kaiser played like a machine from the very first drop. Ten kills, controlled the center, and closed it out with four hearts left. That quarter-million is well earned.”

He turned to look at Rowan and the cameras.

”And to Jack—to the sewer rat—that was one of the smartest, most patient survival runs I’ve ever seen in an arena game. A hundred grand is waiting in your account, Jack. Buy yourself some decent pizza.”

The hangar laughed out loud.

Daniel stood up from the caster desk, looking directly into the primary broadcast lens, resting his hands on the edge of the wood.

”To the three million people watching at home, to the eighty thousand builders, the speedrunners, and every single person who logged into The Forge this week: thank you. The First Annual Crown of Blocks is officially in the books.

”Version 1.0 launches in exactly four weeks, featuring all ten community design assets and full server integration. Keep building. Keep exploring. And we’ll see you all for Year Two.”

The broadcast faded to black against the iconic Miller Interactive logo, leaving the sound of the cheering crowd echoing through the rafters.

Daniel took off his headset, setting it gently on the desk, feeling the long, intense buzz of the five-day marathon finally settling in his bones.

Rowan walked up beside him, wiping sweat from his forehead with a grin. ”Three point four million concurrent, Dan. Not a single server crash. The netcode held up like titanium.”

”You built a good machine, Rowan,” Daniel smiled, clapping him firmly on the shoulder. ”Give the team the next three days off. Paid. Every single one of them.”

”They’ll kiss your feet,” Rowan laughed.

Daniel walked off the raised platform, slipping his dark field jacket on over his henley, heading toward the side exit where a black studio car was waiting in the shadows of the tarmac.

Daniel climbed into the back seat, closing the heavy door against the cool night air.

He leaned his head back against the leather headrest, pulling his phone from his pocket.

There was a single unread text from Tom sent forty minutes ago:

The Steinway is tuned in Bungalow 4. Alan Menken lands at noon on Tuesday. Rest your voice, director. We start singing in forty-eight hours.

Daniel smiled faintly, locking the screen, and watched the lights of Culver City blur past his window into the dark.

A/N: I kinda messed up and didn’t post yesterday. Here’s an extra chapter to cover for that :D
