The Maker: Hollywood

The folding tables in the rehearsal Room had been pushed together into a massive, uneven square. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed with a faint, electrical hum that nobody really noticed until the room went quiet. A spread of half-eaten bagels, a tub of cream cheese, and three large, stainless steel coffee urns sat on a side table against the wall.

Daniel sat at the head of the table, leaning back in his folding chair. He had a pencil behind his ear and a dog-eared copy of the script open in front of him.

Tom sat to his left, aggressively tearing off a piece of a cinnamon raisin bagel.

Across from them, Morgan Freeman was adjusting a pair of reading glasses on his nose. He wore a thick, comfortable cardigan and a yellow bucket hat pulled slightly down over his forehead. He reached out, picked up a styrofoam cup filled with black coffee, and took a slow sip. He smacked his lips, grimaced slightly, and set the cup back down.

”Tom,” Morgan said, his voice rolling across the room like warm, heavy thunder. ”Where exactly did you source this coffee from?”

”The commissary down the street,” Tom said, looking up from his bagel. ”Is it bad? I can have one of the production assistants run out and grab espresso. There’s a place on Riverside that does a decent pour-over.”

”No,” Morgan chuckled, the sound deep and resonant in his chest. ”It tastes like dirt and copper wire. But it wakes you up. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t drinking actual poison before we started.”

Sitting next to Morgan, Cillian Murphy smiled quietly, wrapping his hands around his own styrofoam cup to leech the warmth from it. He wore a dark wool peacoat over a plain gray t-shirt. He looked rested, calm, and entirely unbothered by the chilly air conditioning in the rehearsal room.

”I’ve had worse on independent sets,” Cillian offered softly, his Irish accent cutting through the room. ”I once shot a movie in a warehouse in Dublin where the caterer just poured instant coffee granules directly into a pot of boiling tap water. This is practically a luxury.”

Down the table, Michael Shannon let out a sharp, barking laugh. He was slumped low in his chair, his long legs stretched out under the table. He wore a faded flannel shirt and looked like a guy who had just finished building a deck in his backyard.

”I like the coffee,” Shannon deadpanned, staring at his cup. ”Tastes like prison. Gets you in the mindset.”

Ed Harris, sitting across from Shannon, shook his head. He looked sharp. He wore a crisp button-down shirt and had a pen resting between his fingers. He had the kind of intense, unblinking stare that made people subconsciously sit up straighter when he looked at them.

”Well,” Ed said, tapping his pen against his script. ”If we’re all sufficiently caffeinated, maybe we should read the words Daniel spent the last few months writing.”

”I second that,” Austin Butler chimed in from the end of the table. He looked slightly nervous, surrounded by a murderer’s row of veteran actors, but he hid it well behind a polite smile.

Daniel pulled the pencil from behind his ear and tapped it against the table.

”Alright,” Daniel said, his voice carrying easily over the group. ”Let’s get started. We’re just reading for rhythm today. I want to hear how the dialogue bounces between you guys. Don’t worry about giving a full performance. If a line feels clunky in your mouth, mark it, and we’ll fix it. We start on page one. Morgan, you have the floor.”

The room settled. The rustling of script pages stopped. The low hum of the fluorescent lights suddenly sounded very loud.

Morgan looked down at his script. He took a slow breath, letting the air settle in his chest. When he spoke, he didn’t raise his volume. He simply let the natural resonance of his vocal cords carry the words.

”There’s a guy like me in every state and federal prison in America, I guess,” Morgan read, his tone shifting instantly from the jovial guy complaining about coffee to Ellis Boyd Redding. The warmth remained, but a layer of deep, institutionalized weariness washed over the syllables. ”I’m the guy who can get it for you. Tailor-made cigarettes, a bag of reefer if you’re partial to that, a bottle of brandy to celebrate your boy’s high school graduation. Damn near anything, within reason.”

Tom stopped chewing his bagel.

Daniel leaned forward slightly, resting his chin on his hand.

It was perfect. The cadence, the rhythm, the heavy, soulful acceptance of a man who had spent his entire adult life behind concrete walls.

”Yes, sir,” Morgan continued, turning the page. ”I’m a regular Sears and Roebuck. So when Andy Dufresne came to me in 1949 and asked me to smuggle Rita Hayworth into the prison for him, I told him no problem. And it wasn’t.”

Morgan stopped reading and looked across the table at Cillian.

Cillian didn’t miss a beat. He didn’t adjust his posture or clear his throat. He just spoke, his voice incredibly quiet, smooth, and entirely devoid of intimidation.

”I’m a rock hound,” Cillian read, his eyes meeting Morgan’s. ”At least, I was. In my old life. I’d like a rock hammer.”

”A rock hammer,” Morgan read back, raising an eyebrow. ”What is that?”

”It’s a specialized tool,” Cillian replied smoothly, unblinking. ”Used for chipping away at specimens. Quartz. Mica. Shale. I like the rocks here. The quartz is particularly nice.”

”And what are you going to do with these rocks?” Morgan asked, leaning into the skepticism.

”Carve them,” Cillian said simply. ”Shape them. It’s a hobby. Something to pass the time. And a man will do most anything to pass the time in here.”

The exchange hung in the air.

Daniel watched the two of them. Cillian was playing Andy exactly as Daniel had hoped. He was a vault. He gave absolutely nothing away. There was no desperation, no pleading, no fear. Just a calm, terrifyingly polite man asking for a tool. Placed against Morgan’s worldly, skeptical smuggler, the dynamic was electric.

”Page fourteen,” Daniel called out, skipping ahead. ”Let’s get Ed and Michael in here. The courtyard inspection.”

Ed Harris flipped his script open. He adjusted his collar, his face hardening instantly into the pious, rigid mask of Warden Samuel Norton.

”I believe in two things,” Ed read, his voice sharp and precise, echoing off the bare walls of the rehearsal room. ”Discipline and the Bible. Here you’ll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord. Your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.”

Michael Shannon shifted in his chair. He didn’t try to sound physically imposing. He just dropped his voice into a flat, deadpan register that sounded completely devoid of human empathy.

”You step out of line,” Shannon read as Captain Hadley. ”You look at me wrong. You breathe too heavy. I will put you in the infirmary for a month. Do you understand me, you pieces of garbage?”

”That’s good,” Daniel interrupted softly, holding a hand up. ”Michael, on the day, keep it exactly like that. I don’t want Hadley to sound angry. He’s bored. Beating men to death is just his day job. It’s paperwork to him.”

”Yeah, I get it,” Shannon nodded slowly, taking a sip of his coffee. ”He doesn’t hate them. He just doesn’t think they’re people. You don’t get angry at a chair when you kick it out of the way.”

”Exactly,” Daniel said. He turned to Ed. ”And Ed, Norton is the opposite. He genuinely believes every word he says. He thinks he’s saving their souls while he steals their labor.”

”He’s a classic hypocrite,” Ed agreed, tapping his pen. ”He uses scripture as a shield. It justifies his cruelty. If he convinces himself that these men are sinners condemned by God, then whatever he does to them is just divine retribution. It’s a very comfortable lie to live with.”

Morgan leaned back in his chair, a slow smile spreading across his face. He looked at Daniel. ”You wrote a hell of a script, Daniel. There’s meat on these bones. Plenty of meat.”

”Wait until you have to say these lines standing in the freezing rain in Ohio,” Tom joked, writing a note down on his legal pad. ”You might feel differently.”

”I’ve been cold before,” Morgan laughed. ”Just make sure the catering tent has heaters. I’m too old to eat cold chicken.”

The table read continued for another three hours. They moved through the library scenes, the roof-tarring sequence, and the quiet, devastating moments of Brooks Hatlen’s parole. By the time they reached the final scene on the beach in Zihuatanejo, the room was entirely silent. The fluorescent lights hummed. Nobody spoke for a long moment.

Cillian closed his script and ran a hand through his hair. ”It plays very fast. I thought a two-hour prison movie would feel bogged down, but the pacing is relentless.”

”It’s because nobody says exactly what they mean,” Austin Butler noted quietly, speaking up for the first time in an hour. ”Except Tommy. Tommy is the only guy who actually tells the truth out loud, and it gets him killed.”

”Good observation, Austin,” Daniel nodded, smiling at the younger actor. ”Tommy is the anomaly. He hasn’t been in the system long enough to learn how to hide his cards. That’s why Andy likes him. He’s genuine.”

Daniel stood up, stretching his back. The rehearsal had confirmed everything he needed to know. The cast was completely dialed in. The dialogue worked. The tension was real.

”Alright, everyone,” Daniel said, closing his binder. ”We fly out to Ohio on Sunday. Pack warm. We start shooting Monday morning.”

The actors began gathering their things, chatting amicably as they filed out of the rehearsal room. Tom stayed behind, organizing the empty styrofoam cups and wiping down the table.

”You were right,” Tom said quietly, tossing a handful of trash into the bin. ”Morgan is incredible. He brings a completely different energy than Denzel would have. It’s warmer. It gives the audience a safe place to land in the middle of all that concrete.”

”He anchors the movie,” Daniel agreed, grabbing his messenger bag. ”Let’s go pack. I have a feeling Mansfield is going to be miserable.”

Daniel’s prediction was entirely accurate.

Three days later, the production crew stood in the central courtyard of the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield. It was six in the morning. The sky was the color of bruised iron, completely overcast, pressing down on the towering, gothic stone walls of the prison. The temperature hovered just above freezing, and a damp, biting wind whipped through the yard, carrying the distinct smell of wet earth and old rust.

Daniel stood in the center of the yard, wearing a heavy parka, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He watched a massive crane maneuver a lighting rig into position over the eastern wall.

A few feet away, Dante Ferretti was walking along the perimeter fence, wearing a thick wool coat and an enormous red scarf wrapped three times around his neck. He was grinning from ear to ear, looking completely ecstatic.

”Look at this stone, Daniel!” Dante yelled over the wind, gesturing wildly at the towering cellblock exterior. ”Look at the water stains! Look at the misery! You cannot paint this! This is decades of human suffering baked into the architecture! It is magnificent!”

”I’m glad you’re happy, Dante,” Daniel called back, shivering slightly. ”Just make sure the extras don’t lean against the walls too hard. The location manager said the mortar is crumbling on the north side.”

Sam walked up holding a walkie-talkie, his breath pluming in the freezing air. He looked thoroughly miserable. ”Camera department is set up for the wide shot, Dan. Bob wants to know if you want the bus coming through the main gates or the secondary access road.”

Daniel looked toward the massive wrought-iron front gates. ”The main gates. I want the audience to see the bus get swallowed by the architecture. We stay wide. Do not punch in on the actors yet. I want them to look tiny.”

”Copy that,” Sam said, speaking into his radio.

A few minutes later, an authentic 1940s prison transport bus rumbled down the dirt road, its heavy diesel engine growling in the quiet morning air. It turned the corner and slowly rolled through the massive iron gates.

Daniel watched the monitor in the video village tent. The heavy 35mm film rolled through Bob Elswit’s camera, capturing the stark, depressing reality of the reformatory.

The bus lurched to a halt in the center of the yard. The hydraulic doors hissed open.

Michael Shannon stepped out first, wearing the tailored, crisp uniform of Captain Hadley. He carried a heavy wooden baton, tapping it rhythmically against his thigh. He didn’t look cold. He looked like a statue.

Behind him, a line of extras wearing faded, gray prison uniforms began shuffling out of the bus, their ankles chained together. Cillian Murphy was the last to step off. He looked pale, exhausted, and incredibly small against the backdrop of the massive stone walls.

”Action,” Daniel said quietly into his headset.

Shannon walked down the line of new inmates. He didn’t yell. He just stopped in front of a terrified-looking extra, leaned in close, and spoke in that flat, deadpan voice they had rehearsed in Burbank.

”You belong to me now,” Shannon said, his breath fogging in the air. ”You look at me, you speak to me, you breathe on me without permission, I will crack your skull open like a walnut. Move.”

The scene played out exactly as Daniel had envisioned. The cold weather wasn’t acting. The shivering was real. The misery in the extras’ eyes was genuine.

”Cut,” Daniel called out. ”That’s good. Let’s reset and run it again from the reverse angle. Get the heaters over to the extras, please.”

For the next two weeks, the production lived in the freezing shadow of the reformatory. They shot the roof-tarring sequence on a day when the wind chill dropped into the twenties. Morgan Freeman sat on the cold tar, wrapped in a blanket between takes, drinking hot tea and telling stories to the younger cast members. Ed Harris paced the yard, staying in character as Warden Norton, his posture rigid and unforgiving.

It was grueling, physical filmmaking. There were no green screens to fix mistakes later. There were no digital extensions. If a shot looked wrong, they had to move the massive camera rigs and wait for the light to change. It forced everyone to be incredibly present.

On a Thursday afternoon, Daniel was sitting in his trailer trying to get warm. The small space heater in the corner was glowing red, fighting a losing battle against the Ohio draft. He had a bowl of catering soup in front of him and his script open on his lap, making notes for the afternoon scenes.

His cell phone vibrated on the small table.

Daniel picked it up. The caller ID displayed a Los Angeles area code.

”Hello?” Daniel answered.

”Dan,” the familiar, energetic voice of Steven Spielberg came through the speaker. ”How are you doing?.”

Daniel smiled, leaning back against the vinyl cushions of the trailer booth. ”It’s entirely possible that I have mild frostbite on my toes, Steven. How’s the California weather?”

”Seventy-two degrees and sunny,” Steven laughed. ”I’m sitting in the editing bay right now wearing a t-shirt. I don’t miss location shooting in the snow, I’ll tell you that much.”

”Enjoy it,” Daniel sighed, stirring his soup. ”Tell me you have good news. We’re locking the final cut soon, right?”

”We are locked,” Steven said, his tone shifting into the focused, professional register of a fellow filmmaker. ”I just finished the final sound mix with John Williams this morning. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is officially in the can.”

Daniel felt a surge of genuine excitement. Handing the directorial reins of his Harry Potter universe over to Steven Spielberg had been a massive decision. Daniel owned the property. He had built the entire cinematic world from the ground up with the first movie. He was the storyteller. He had written the skeleton of the universe, and Joanne had filled in the muscles, writing the massive novels that TDM published.

TDM was Daniel’s publishing house, and the books were moving tens of millions of copies worldwide. The first movie had shattered box office records. The pressure on Steven to deliver a sequel that matched the tone and scale of the original was immense.

”How does it feel?” Daniel asked.

”It feels massive,” Steven admitted honestly. ”Dan, stepping into the world you built... it was intimidating. I won’t lie. The kids were great, Rupert and Emma are fantastic, and Colin is really growing into the role. But you set a very specific, dark, magical tone with the first one. I wanted to make sure I honored that while bringing my own sensibilities to the camera work.”

”You’re Steven Spielberg,” Daniel laughed. ”I wasn’t worried about your camera work.”

”Well, the Basilisk sequence is going to terrify children,” Steven chuckled. ”We went practical with the animatronic for the close-ups and used the VFX team in Burbank for the wide slithering shots. It looks incredible. But honestly, the hardest part of the movie was matching the sheer terror of what Cillian Murphy did in the first film.”

Daniel paused, smiling. Cillian was currently sitting in a freezing prison cell fifty yards away, playing a quiet, stoic banker.

”He casts a long shadow,” Daniel agreed. ”Even when he’s just a memory in a diary.”

”Exactly,” Steven said. ”We leaned into the mystery of Tom Riddle. But anyway, I didn’t call just to tell you the movie is done. The marketing team at Miller Studios finished cutting the first theatrical trailer this morning. Marcus said he needed your greenlight before they attach a release date and drop it online.”

”Did you watch the trailer?” Daniel asked.

”I did,” Steven said. ”It’s fantastic. John Williams’ score swells, the flying car looks great, and they cut the ending perfectly. It leaves you hanging right before the snake attacks. I’m sending you the encrypted link to your email right now. Watch it and give Marcus the word.”

”Hold on, let me pull it up,” Daniel said. He reached over, woke up his laptop, and opened his email client. He clicked the secure link Steven had sent him.

A high-definition video player opened on his screen. Daniel hit play.

The familiar, haunting notes of Hedwig’s Theme drifted through the small trailer speakers. But the arrangement was darker, heavier.

The screen opened on the familiar sight of Hogwarts castle at night, rain lashing against the stone towers.

A voiceover played. It wasn’t Dumbledore. It was the young, sinister voice of Tom Riddle.

”I can show you... if you’d like.”

The trailer exploded into motion. The flying Ford Anglia dodging the thrashing branches of the Whomping Willow. Harry walking down a dark, flooded corridor, his wand illuminated. Hermione brewing Polyjuice Potion in the bathroom. Gilderoy Lockhart flashing a brilliant, entirely fake smile at a camera.

The editing was tight, fast, and magical. It perfectly captured the wonder of the universe Daniel had created, but Steven’s masterful eye for blocking and scale was evident in every frame. The shots felt deeper, the lighting more dramatic.

The trailer ended with a massive, terrifying hiss echoing through the Chamber of Secrets, Harry turning around slowly, terror in his eyes, before cutting to the title card.

HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS.

Below the title, the release date faded in. Thanksgiving weekend.

Daniel watched the screen fade to black. He sat back in his booth.

”Well?” Steven asked over the phone.

”You nailed it, Steven,” Daniel said warmly. ”It looks absolutely incredible. The tone is perfect. It feels like a natural progression from the first movie, but it breathes on its own.”

”Glad you like it, boss,” Steven laughed, clearly relieved. ”I’ll let Marcus know you’re happy with it.”

”Tell him he has the greenlight,” Daniel said. ”Drop it tomorrow morning. Let’s remind the internet what a real event movie looks like.”

”Will do. Stay warm out there, Dan. Call me when you get back to LA.”

”Thanks, Steven. Talk soon.”

Daniel hung up the phone. He closed his laptop and looked out the small window of his trailer at the freezing Ohio landscape. The contrast was jarring. He was sitting in the middle of a depressing, grounded period piece, while a billion dollar magical universe he had built was about to take over the world again.

The next morning, at exactly 9:00 AM Pacific Time, the official Miller Studios accounts released the trailer for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The reaction was instantaneous.

For the last three weeks, the internet had been completely consumed by the corporate drama of Disney’s collapsing stock and the massive success of Treasure Planet. The general public had almost forgotten that the sequel to one of the biggest movies of the decade was sitting in post-production.

Within ten minutes, Twitter was completely hijacked. The hashtag #ChamberOfSecrets rocketed to the number one spot worldwide.

Fans of the TDM published comics and books flooded the forums, dissecting every single frame of the trailer to see how closely Steven Spielberg had adapted Joanne’s writing.

The r/movies subreddit had to lock their front page as the megathread generated thousands of comments an hour.

HogwartsAlumni: Did anyone else get chills when the music hit? Spielberg’s directing looks phenomenal. You can tell he respected the skeleton Daniel Miller built with the first movie, but the camera work looks so much more sweeping. The flying car scene looks insane.

MagicNerd99: The Basilisk hiss at the end! I literally jumped. Also, Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart is the most perfect casting decision Miller Studios has ever made. He looks hilarious.

CinephileDave: It’s actually crazy to think about the logistics of this. Daniel Miller hands the biggest franchise in the world to Steven Spielberg, goes off to make a massive animated pirate movie. He’s filling his cave with geniuses.

BookReader22: I’m just happy that the books are getting the respect they deserve. TDM really built a powerhouse. The books are incredible, but seeing Daniel’s storytelling vision brought to life again is just magic. November cannot come fast enough.

In his office in Burbank, Marcus watched the analytics dashboard light up like a Christmas tree. The trailer was crossing ten million views in under two hours. Pre-sale ticket portals were already experiencing server lag just from people searching for the Thanksgiving release date.

Marcus picked up his coffee, smiling to himself. Disney was still bleeding out in boardroom meetings trying to figure out how to stop their stock from crashing, while Miller Studios just casually dropped a bomb that would guarantee a massive financial and credible boost.

Back in Ohio, Daniel didn’t check the internet. He didn’t read the comments or look at the view counts.

He was standing in the prison yard, his breath fogging in the freezing air, watching Morgan Freeman walk slowly across the courtyard.

”Action,” Daniel called out softly.

Morgan shuffled across the wet gravel, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his faded uniform. He looked up at the towering stone walls, his face a mask of weary acceptance.

Daniel watched the monitor. The magic, the billion-dollar franchises, the corporate wars—they all disappeared. There was only the cold stone, the 35mm film, and the quiet dignity of a man trying to survive.

”Cut,” Daniel said. ”Beautiful. Let’s go again.”
