The Maker: Hollywood

At exactly 9:00 AM on a quiet Tuesday morning, the marketing department on the second floor of Building B hit the universal publish button.

There was no week-long countdown. There was no cryptic teaser of a teaser. There was no promotional poster campaign with a silhouette standing in front of a giant question mark.

The official Miller Studios accounts simply uploaded the two-minute-and-twenty-second trailer simultaneously across YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, and Facebook. The caption across every single platform consisted of just eight words:

Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.

The trailer didn’t open with a massive bass drop or a sudden jump-scare sound effect.

It opened on complete, dead silence.

The first image was a stark, beautifully textured 35mm film shot of a gray sky over the Ohio State Reformatory. The stone walls looked cold, wet, and utterly ancient. A solitary, deep cello note—courtesy of John Williams—slowly rolled into the audio mix, low enough that anyone watching with decent headphones could feel the vibration in their jaw.

Then came the voice.

It was Morgan Freeman, sounding like a man who had spent forty years watching the clock tick in a dark room.

”I have no idea to this day what makes a man survive a place like this,” Morgan’s voiceover began, smooth, weary, and completely magnetic. ”Some men get broken the first night. Some men just dry up like old leaves. And then... there was Andy.”

The cuts were slow, deliberate, and confident.

There was Cillian Murphy, pale, completely unreadable, dressed in a faded 1940s prison uniform, stepping off a transport bus into the mud.

There was Ed Harris, wearing thin-rimmed spectacles and a black suit, holding up a small pocket Bible in the courtyard and delivering his line with icy, terrifying piety: ”I believe in two things. Discipline, and the Bible. Here you’ll receive both.”

There was Michael Shannon as Captain Hadley, standing six-foot-three in a dark guard uniform, casually dangling a wooden club, looking like a man who would break a person’s ribs just to pass the time before lunch.

There was no gunfire. There were no car chases. There was no visual effects spectacle.

The trailer simply showed the grinding, relentless texture of life inside Shawshank. Men spreading black tar across a blistering hot roof under the summer sun. Dust motes floating in the shafts of light through the library window as Donald Sutherland smiled gently at a pet bird. Cillian sitting quietly in the yard, carving small chess pieces out of raw quartz with a tiny rock hammer.

And then, as the minimalist piano melody began to weave through the heavy cello strings, Morgan’s narration delivered the final hook:

”I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living... or get busy dying.”

A rapid sequence of final images flashed across the screen. A guard pounding violently on the reinforced glass of the warden’s office. Andy standing in the pouring rain, lightning illuminating his face for a split second. A hand tracing the words carved into the wood above a doorway: Brooks was here.

The screen cut to black.

The piano faded into a single, clean note.

The title card drifted in against the dark background:

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

Directed by Daniel Miller

Coming to Theaters this Autumn

---

For the first four minutes, the internet didn’t seem to know what to do with it.

Then the views hit the hundreds of thousands, the notification servers began to choke, and the entire social media landscape collectively lost its mind.

Within fifteen minutes, the hashtag `#ShawshankTrailer` took the number one trending spot on Twitter, immediately followed by `#CillianMurphy`, `#MorganFreeman`, and `#GetBusyLiving`.

The reaction across the feeds was a chaotic, unhinged flood of real-time human confusion, excitement, and shitposting.

On Twitter, the comments section under the official video was moving so fast you couldn’t read a single tweet without five hundred new ones pushing it down the screen.

`@cinephile_sam`: two minutes and twenty seconds. zero explosions. zero cgi. and my hands are literally shaking. the color grading alone looks insane bob elswit is a god

`@hoodie_mel`: wait so daniel miller really just threw cillian murphy in a federal penitentiary and told him to carve rocks???? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP

`@greg_the_egg`: michael shannon in that guard uniform is nightmare fuel. bro looks like he’s about to beat me through my phone screen

`@kimbaslice99`: steven king adaptation directed by miller??? bro is collecting genres like infinity stones at this point lmaooo

`@jason_watches_movies`: i love how everyone was expecting a teaser for avengers or some massive superhero universe thing and daniel miller just casually drops an intensely depressing 1940s prison drama like it’s nothing. the absolute disrespect to every other director in hollywood. Also, avengers wen?

`@stanley_cup_hoe`: cillian looks so tiny and traumatized in that oversized coat i want to give him a blanket and some soup

`@filmbro_official`: morgan freemans voiceover gave me actual chills. the man could read the back of a cereal box and i’d pay 20 bucks for an imax ticket

`@pizzaguy_dan`: lmao look at the frame at 1:42 where ed harris is holding the bible. the man has not blinked once in his entire acting career i swear to god

Over on Reddit, the r/movies megathread hit five thousand comments within twenty minutes of the post going live.

User [deleted]: This looks incredible. The lighting in that library shot is vintage 70s cinema. You can tell they actually shot on location at a real reformatory, the stone walls have that gross damp look you can’t fake with green screens.

User TheBoxOfficeGuy: Okay so predictions on opening weekend? It’s an R-rated adult drama with no action set pieces, which usually caps at like $30-40M, but it’s Daniel Miller. The guy literally just made 1.5 billion on Treasure Planet and Harry Potter 2 is cruising past a billion right now. People will show up just because his name is on the poster.

User MCU_Theorist_88: Guys hear me out on this. What if this is an alternate timeline where Steve Rogers doesn’t get the super soldier serum and gets framed for murder in 1947? Think about the dates! It lines up perfectly!

User SarcasticCinematographer: @MCU_Theorist_88 please delete your account and never watch a movie again in your life.

User OhioNative_44: yoooo thats the Mansfield reformatory!! my uncle used to work maintenance near there. place is creepy as hell. so wild seeing cillian murphy walking through those gates.

User MovieBuff_T: The cello theme by John Williams is actually haunting. It doesn’t sound like his usual brassy heroic stuff at all. Much more minimalist. Almost sounds like Philip Glass or Max Richter.

On TikTok, accounts were already ripping the audio from Morgan Freeman’s ”Get busy living, or get busy dying” monologue, setting it over workout clips, grindset motivation videos, and random funny videos of people struggling through their morning college classes.

On Instagram, the official Miller Studios carousel post featured high-resolution still frames of Cillian staring through the iron bars, Ed Harris in his dark office, and Michael Shannon dragging a prisoner across the gravel yard. The comments were overflowing with fire emojis, crying faces, and fans tagging their friends asking when pre-sales were going live.

Within an hour, Variety, Deadline, and The Hollywood Reporter all rushed out breaking analysis articles.

Deadline ran with the headline: ”Daniel Miller Pivots to Prestige Drama: First Look at ’The Shawshank Redemption’ Showcases Uncompromising 35mm Practical Craft.”

Variety called it: ”A Masterclass in Theatrical Restraint: Why Miller Studios’ Adult Drama Slate Is the Ultimate Antidote to Franchise Fatigue.”

At 10:15 AM, Daniel was sitting at the desk in his Burbank office.

The morning sun was shining brightly through the glass, warming the polished wood floor. He had his feet kicked up on the corner of the desk, dressed comfortably in an olive green crewneck sweatshirt and jeans. He was eating a breakfast bowl filled with steel-cut oats, raw almonds, and fresh blueberries, washing it down with a glass of water.

The heavy oak door swung open with a bang.

Tom walked in, holding his iPad, grinning so widely that his cheeks looked like they were going to cramp up.

”Have you looked at the internet?” Tom asked, closing the door with his foot and dropping onto the leather sofa.

”I haven’t,” Daniel said, taking another bite of oats. ”I was reviewing the color correction notes Benny sent over.”

”Dan, the server logs on the website almost crashed,” Tom laughed, tapping the screen of his iPad. ”We passed thirty million combined views across all platforms in the first hour. On YouTube alone, the 4K upload has four hundred thousand likes. People are losing their minds.”

”Good,” Daniel said, chewing slowly. ”How’s the sentiment?”

”They love it,” Tom said. ”I mean, look at this.”

Tom leaned forward, scrolling through a Reddit thread, reading comments aloud off his screen.

CaptainPopcorn: ’I was fully prepared to hate on Daniel Miller for making a depressing prison movie after giving us spaceships and magic, but that trailer made me want to call my dad and tell him I love him.’ Then there’s another guy on Twitter who made a whole ten-part thread convinced that the movie is a secret Captain America prequel about Steve Rogers going undercover in a federal prison.”

Daniel let out a sharp laugh, almost choking on an almond. ”A Captain America prequel? Where do they even come up with this stuff?”

”They’re desperate to connect everything, Dan,” Tom chuckled, shaking his head. ”They see you directing, they see 1940s period clothing, and their brains immediately go to super soldiers. But seriously, the response to the tone is overwhelmingly positive. People are really responding to the fact that it looks grounded. No digital gloss. Just real stone and heavy grain.”

The door clicked open again.

Marcus stepped in, looking sharp in his bespoke gray suit. He held a cup of espresso in one hand and his phone in the other. He didn’t look surprised at all; he looked like a guy who had just checked the weather and found out it was sunny in California.

”My desk phone has been ringing continuously since 9:10,” Marcus said, taking a sip of espresso. ”Terry Kowalski from AMC was the first one through the switchboard. Called me on his direct cell.”

Daniel smiled, setting his empty bowl on the desk. ”What did Terry have to say?”

”He said, and I quote: ’Tell Dan that if he gives me this movie in September, I will personally clean the butter machines in all four hundred of my theaters.’ The guy wants to lock in every single primary standard screen and every available non-IMAX auditorium for a minimum four-week run.”

”What about the other circuits?” Tom asked.

”Regal, Cinemark, Megaplex in the UK—they’re all sending over preliminary screen requests,” Marcus said, leaning against the edge of Daniel’s desk. ”They know adult dramas don’t usually pull summer blockbuster numbers, but they also know that your name on a one-sheet poster drives foot traffic better than any promotional gimmick in the business. They’re treating this like a major prestige event. Pre-sales aren’t even open, and theater managers are already adjusting their autumn schedules.”

”Tell them we’ll do standard distribution splits,” Daniel said casually. ”No aggressive demands, no weird mandates. Just standard wide theatrical release. Let the theaters make their money.”

”Already told them,” Marcus nodded. ”They love you, Dan. Truly. You make their lives easy.”

”Good,” Daniel said, standing up from his chair and stretching his shoulders. ”I’m going to take a walk across the lot. I’ve been staring at computer screens and timeline scrubbers for three days straight. My brain needs fresh air.”

”Want company?” Tom asked, putting his iPad away.

”Sure,” Daniel said. ”Let’s go check on the backlot.”

---

The air outside was crisp, carrying that warm, dry California breeze that made walking through the studio lot feel like strolling through a small, incredibly busy town.

Electric golf carts hummed as they drove past, carrying lighting technicians and wardrobe assistants holding racks of vintage clothing. In the distance, the massive soundstage doors of Stage 2 were rolled up, revealing the bustling activity of a second-unit camera crew setting up a lighting rig for an upcoming commercial shoot.

Daniel and Tom walked side by side down the main studio avenue, their hands in their pockets, enjoying the quiet hum of the lot.

”It’s weird,” Tom said, looking up at the massive water tower painted with the bold, clean Miller Studios logo. ”Ten years ago, we were sitting in that tiny, rundown apartment with peeling paint on the ceiling, praying that our first film would scrape together enough box office to cover our catering bills. Now, we drop a two-minute trailer on a Tuesday morning and the whole internet stops working.”

”That’s because we never stopped making movies for the people in the seats,” Daniel said simply. ”A lot of people get big in this town, and then they start making movies for the board of directors, or for the film festival critics, or for their own vanity. The second you forget that regular people are paying twenty dollars of their hard-earned money to sit in the dark for two hours, you’re dead.”

”Amen to that,” Tom agreed.

Their peaceful walk was abruptly interrupted as they rounded the corner near Prop Warehouse 3.

A loud, furious voice, thick with an Italian accent, echoed out from the loading bay, completely drowning out the sound of the golf carts.

”No! No, no, no! Madonna mia, this is an insult to the art of cinema!”

Daniel stopped. He looked at Tom. Tom just grinned.

”Sounds like Dante,” Tom said.

”Definitely Dante,” Daniel sighed.

They walked toward the loading dock.

Standing in the center of the concrete bay was a vintage, beautifully restored 1952 Ford pickup truck that was supposed to be used for background dressing in an upcoming period production.

Standing next to the truck was Dante Ferretti, wearing his usual thick scarf, wildly gesturing with both hands at the driver-side door. His white hair was sticking up in three different directions, and his face was bright red.

Standing on the other side of the truck was Brian, a veteran scenic painter wearing paint-splattered overalls, holding a metal paint can and a wide horsehair brush. Brian looked completely exhausted, leaning against the truck bed with the resigned posture of a man who had been having the same argument for forty-five minutes.

Standing nearby with a clipboard was Sam, looking like he was actively praying for an asteroid to strike the studio.

”Dante,” Brian pleaded, holding his brush up. ”It’s navy blue. You asked for dark blue. The paint code matches the historical swatch from the 1950s Ford catalog. It is literally factory accurate.”

”Factory accurate?” Dante shouted, throwing his arms toward the sky. ”Factory accurate is for car salesmen! We are not selling trucks, Brian! We are making a movie! Look at this paint! It is too happy! It has hope! It shines in the sun like a new toy! This truck belongs to a man who works sixty hours a week in a steel mill! His back hurts! His wife is yelling at him! His truck must look like his life—exhausted! This is not the blue of an exhausted man! This is the blue of a man who goes to the beach!”

Sam saw Daniel and Tom walking up and let out a massive, audible sigh of relief. He practically ran over to them.

”Dan, thank God,” Sam whispered, rubbing his forehead. ”Please help me. We’ve been here since eight in the morning. Dante won’t let us load the truck onto the transport flatbed because he hates the color.”

Daniel smiled, stepping up onto the loading dock. ”Dante. What seems to be the problem?”

Dante spun around, his face instantly softening into dramatic sorrow as he saw Daniel. He grabbed Daniel by the elbow, pulling him toward the truck door.

”Daniel! Look at this catastrophe!” Dante lamented, pointing dramatically at the shiny navy paint. ”I tell Brian, I need the color of weathered regret. The color of iron that has seen too much rain. And what does he give me? A shiny blueberry!”

Brian let out a dry groan from behind the truck. ”It’s navy blue, Dan. Standard automotive enamel.”

Daniel looked closely at the truck. He rubbed his thumb against the smooth, glossy clear coat.

Dante was completely insane, but he was also fundamentally right about texture. A shiny, pristine truck in the background of a gritty period drama would catch the eye and pull the audience out of the world. But Brian had done his job correctly according to the paperwork.

”Brian,” Daniel said, keeping his tone calm and conversational.

”Yeah, boss?” Brian replied, hoping for a lifeline.

”The paint job is beautiful,” Daniel said. ”The coverage is even, the tone is accurate to the swatch.”

Brian looked visibly relieved.

”However,” Daniel continued, turning back to Dante, ”Dante is right about the gloss. It’s catching too much light. It’s going to flare in lenses.”

Dante beamed, nodding aggressively. ”See! The director understands the soul of the metal!”

Daniel looked back at Brian. ”Brian, what if you take a rag soaked in mineral spirits and fine pumice powder, and just take the gloss off the clear coat? Give it a light scuff along the top of the hood and the door handles where a driver’s hands would actually touch it. Don’t repaint it. Just knock the shine down by about forty percent, and hit the wheel wells with a little bit of matte gray dusting spray.”

Brian blinked. He looked at the truck, then looked at his paint kit. ”That would take about ten minutes.”

Daniel looked at Dante. ”Dante. If he dulls the shine and adds the hand-wear on the door, will it have enough despair for you?”

Dante tilted his head, narrowing his eyes, visualizing the change. He rubbed his chin thoughtfully through his scarf.

”The dulling of the gloss... with the gray dust of the road,” Dante murmured, his voice dropping into quiet contemplation. A slow, artistic smile spread across his face. ”Yes. Yes, that could work. It will look like the truck is tired. That is acceptable.”

”Great,” Daniel clapped his hands together. ”Brian, hit it with the pumice. Sam, get the flatbed ready to load in twenty minutes.”

”Thank you, Dan,” Sam breathed, practically bowing as he hurried off toward the dispatch office.

Daniel and Tom walked back down the ramp of the loading dock, leaving Dante and Brian to work out the exact technique of applying road dust to the fenders.

Tom was laughing under his breath. ”The color of weathered regret. I swear Dante needs his own reality show.”

”He’s an artist,” Daniel smiled, checking his watch. It was just past 11:30 AM. ”If you don’t have people who care that much about the background trucks, the world falls apart on screen.”

Daniel’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and looked at the screen.

It was a text message from Florence.

Margot and I picked up the steaks and the ribs from the butcher in Santa Monica. We are heading to Stan’s place now. Tom is invited if he promises not to touch the grill. Sarah will be there. Bring yourself before Stan starts drinking the beer by himself.

Daniel showed the screen to Tom.

Tom looked offended. ”What does she mean, ’if he promises not to touch the grill’? I made great burgers last month!”

”You burned the cheese straight through to the charcoal, Tom,” Daniel pointed out, walking back toward his car in the executive lot. ”We literally had to scrape the grate with a wire brush.”

”It was an aggressive sear,” Tom muttered defensively, walking beside him. ”There’s a difference.”

”Right. An aggressive sear,” Daniel laughed. ”Come on. Let’s go see Stan.”

---

Ten minutes later, Daniel and Tom were driving up the sun-drenched hills of Bel Air.

A few years ago, after Stan Lee had experienced a terrifying health scare that had landed him in the hospital for two weeks, Daniel had stepped in and quietly reorganized things.

Daniel had bought a beautiful, sprawling mid-century modern single-story estate just three doors down the private road from his own home, moving Stan into the neighborhood. He had hired a full-time, professional, discreet medical and house staff to live on the property, ensuring Stan had world-class care around the clock. But more importantly, it allowed Daniel, Margot, and Florence to treat Stan like family. They walked over for coffee, had dinners together three times a week, and regularly turned Stan’s backyard into the social hub of their weekends.

Daniel pulled his car through the security gates of Stan’s estate.

The property was gorgeous. Tall palm trees swayed gently in the breeze, surrounding a massive, perfectly manicured lawn that looked out over the entire Los Angeles basin. In the center of the patio, next to an infinity pool that sparkled like glass in the midday sun, sat a massive stainless steel gas grill.

The smell of smoking hickory wood and seasoned meat was already drifting across the yard.

Stan Lee was standing in front of the grill.

Today he looked like a guy who had just won the lottery. He was wearing crisp khaki slacks, white sneakers, a light blue polo shirt, and his iconic, gold-rimmed tinted aviator glasses. Draped over his chest was a bright red apron that had the words EXCELSIOR! THE GRILL MASTER printed across the front in bold white comic-book font.

Daniel always wondered where he got these custom made stuff for literally every situation.

He held a pair of massive metal tongs in his right hand, rhythmically clicking them together like a crab warming up for a fight.

Sitting on the outdoor lounge chairs a few feet away were Margot and Florence. Margot was wearing a relaxed linen sundress and sunglasses, sipping an iced tea. Florence was lounging on a chaise, barefoot, holding an iPad, chatting with Juniper, Stan’s personal assistant, who was sitting under the shade of a patio umbrella.

”Look who finally decided to show up!” Stan bellowed as Daniel and Tom walked through the side gate onto the patio. His voice was raspy, full of that classic, energetic New York brass that had narrated decades of comic books. ”The big-shot director! The man of the hour! Put down the cameras, Daniel, we’ve got real work to do here!”

Daniel smiled warmly, walking straight over to the grill and wrapping an arm around Stan’s shoulders, giving him a gentle, solid hug. ”How are you feeling today, Stan?”

”I feel like a million bucks!” Stan declared, clicking his metal tongs twice in Daniel’s face. ”The doctors told me this morning my blood pressure is better than a thirty-year-old’s. So I told Juniper to clear out the vegetables and buy some actual meat. Look at these ribeyes!”

Stan pointed the tongs at the massive, perfectly marbled steaks sizzling over the grates.

”They look incredible, Stan,” Daniel said.

Margot looked over from her lounge chair, lowering her sunglasses. ”We bought four pounds of prime beef, Daniel. Stan specifically requested that nobody mention cholesterol until at least Tuesday.”

”Cholesterol is a myth created by people who don’t know how to cook,” Stan shot back, completely deadpan, without turning around from the grill. ”Back in my day, in the Bronx, we ate pastrami every single day for lunch, and look at me! I’m practically immortal!”

Tom walked over to the ice chest sitting near the patio bar, pulling out a couple of cold beers. He leaned in to kiss Sarah who just walked in from inside. He popped the caps off, handed one to Daniel, and looked at Stan’s apron.

”Nice apron, Stan,” Tom said.

”Florence bought it for me,” Stan said proudly, flipping one of the massive steaks with surprising dexterity. ”She knows a real culinary artist when she sees one. Unlike you, Tom. I heard about what you did to those burgers last month. Ruined perfectly good ground chuck. Disgraceful.”

Tom sighed, taking a sip of his beer, looking at Florence. ”You told him?”

Florence flashed an innocent, dazzling smile from her chaise lounge. ”I tell Stan everything, Tom. He’s my confidant.”

”I am the keeper of secrets,” Stan agreed solemnly, adjusting his aviators.

Daniel walked over to the patio chairs, leaning down to kiss Margot softly on the forehead, then stepping over to kiss Florence, who pulled him down by his collar for a quick hug.

”You smell like fresh air instead of an editing bay,” Florence noted approvingly. ”Much better.”

”I took a walk on the lot,” Daniel said, pulling up a cushioned wicker chair and sitting down beside them, resting his beer on the small glass table. ”Had to stop Dante from murdering a scenic painter over a blue truck.”

Margot laughed. ”Was the blue too happy?”

”Way too happy,” Daniel confirmed. ”It lacked the soul of an exhausted steelworker.”

”Classic Dante,” Margot smiled, shaking her head.

Florence leaned over, holding up her iPad so Daniel could see the screen. ”Have you seen the numbers on the trailer since you left the office? It’s completely dominating everything. YouTube just hit forty million. The TikTok audio is already being used by half the fitness influencers on the platform.”

”Marcus came by the office earlier,” Daniel said. ”The theater chains are already calling to lock down the screen allocations.”

Stan turned his head away from the grill for a moment, looking over his shoulder at Daniel through his tinted glasses.

”I watched the trailer this morning, kiddo,” Stan said, his tone shifting from the loud, boisterous grill-master into something softer, deeper, and filled with genuine affection. ”Juniper pulled it up on the big television in the living room.”

Daniel looked at the old man. Despite all the box office records, the industry awards, and the massive corporate empire he had built, Stan Lee’s opinion on storytelling always carried a special, immense weight for Daniel. Stan was the godfather of modern mythology. He understood the connection between an audience and an idea better than anyone alive.

”What did you think, Stan?” Daniel asked quietly.

Stan set his tongs down on the stainless steel side-tray of the grill. He reached up, took off his aviators, and tucked them into the collar of his polo shirt, looking directly at Daniel with his clear, sharp, hazel eyes.

”It reminded me of the old days, Dan,” Stan said softly, his New York accent carrying a nostalgic warmth. ”Back in the days, when Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko and I were sitting in that cramped little office in Manhattan, writing stories on typewriters. People thought we were just making funny books for children. They wanted bright colors and punchy sound effects.”

Stan stepped away from the grill, walking slowly over to the patio seating, leaning on the back of Margot’s chair.

”But the stories that people remembered,” Stan continued, pointing a weathered finger at Daniel, ”the ones that people still come up to me and cry about decades later... they weren’t the ones where the hero punched a monster through a skyscraper. They were the stories where Peter Parker couldn’t pay his rent. The stories where the hero felt completely alone in the world, sitting in a small room, trying to figure out how to wake up the next morning.”

Stan looked down at the iPad on Florence’s lap, which was showing a still frame of Cillian Murphy sitting alone against the cold stone wall of Shawshank.

”That trailer,” Stan said, his voice full of quiet conviction. ”That’s a real story, Daniel. It’s about the human spirit. You didn’t give them a circus. You gave them a mirror. People need to be reminded that even when the walls are twenty feet thick, a man can still hold onto his dignity. You did good, kid. You did real good.”

The patio went completely silent for a moment.

The soft rustle of the palm trees in the breeze, the distant hum of traffic far down in the valley, and the gentle sizzling of the steaks on the grill were the only sounds.

Margot reached up, gently covering Stan’s hand where it rested on the back of her chair. Florence watched the old man with soft, genuine warmth in her eyes.

Daniel felt a lump form in his throat. He smiled—a small, humble, deeply grateful smile—and raised his beer bottle slightly toward Stan.

”Thanks, Stan,” Daniel said softly. ”That means more than you know.”

”Ah, don’t get all sentimental on me now!” Stan suddenly barked, breaking the emotional tension with a loud, theatrical wave of his hand, putting his aviators back over his eyes. ”The steaks are burning! Tom, get over here and hold this plate before you ruin my reputation as a chef!”

Tom immediately scrambled out of his chair, grabbing a large porcelain serving platter from the outdoor bar and running over to the grill. ”I’m on it, I’m on it!”

”Careful with the tongs, Tom! If you squeeze the juices out of that ribeye, I will personally write a comic book where you get eaten by Galactus!”

Margot and Florence burst into laughter, leaning against each other on the lounge chairs.

Daniel sat back in his chair, taking a slow sip of his cold beer, looking out over the panoramic view of the Los Angeles basin below.

The city was vast, sprawling, and endlessly chaotic. Somewhere down there in the gleaming corporate towers of Century City and Burbank, studio executives were having panic attacks over quarterly margins, algorithms were churning through demographic data, and tech conglomerates were fighting messy, bloody legal battles in Washington over corporate takeovers.

None of it mattered up here.

Up here, in the warm California sun, there was only the smell of seasoned wood smoke, the sound of his family laughing, and an old legend shouting at Tom over a medium-rare steak.

Daniel took a deep breath of the clean hill air, feeling completely settled, and at peace.
