The Maker: Hollywood

Hollywood Boulevard had ceased to be a functioning thoroughfare forty-eight hours ago, but by 4:00 PM on premiere night, the city of Los Angeles had simply surrendered the entire district to Miller Studios.

The city had granted the closure from Highland down to Orange, and where asphalt usually baked under the smoggy southern California sun, there lay a custom-woven, heavy-pile gold carpet. It was eight lanes wide, flanked by three-tiered aluminum bleachers that held over six thousand ticketed fans, with another five thousand people crammed against the steel bicycle racks along the outer sidewalks.

The air smelled like hot sugar from the churro carts, scorched generator diesel, and the cheap ozone tang of a thousand heavy-duty flash bulbs popping off every second.

A black, long-wheelbase Cadillac Escalade pulled smoothly into the arrival lane in front of the El Capitan Theatre.

When the rear door swung open, the volume on the street went from a steady, deafening roar to a concussive shockwave that rattled the plate glass windows of the Disney Store across the boulevard.

Daniel Miller stepped out first.

He was wearing a midnight-navy, double-breasted tuxedo with black grosgrain lapels, cut sharp and broad across the shoulders. He looked wide, solid, and entirely awake, showing zero signs of the six months he’d spent in editing bays and sound stages. He paused for half a second, buttoning the lower anchor button with one hand, before turning back to offer his other arm to the interior of the car.

Margot Robbie stepped down onto the gold carpet. She was wearing an architectural, pale-gold satin column gown with a high neck and an open back, her blonde hair styled in clean, old-school Hollywood waves that caught the setting sun. She took Daniel’s forearm with an easy, radiant smile, completely in her element.

Right behind her came Florence Pugh, stepping out with that unmistakable, grounded swagger, wearing a sharp, tailored black velvet tuxedo with an open silk shirt beneath, heavy platinum rings glinting on her fingers as she adjusted her cuffs and gave the screaming bleachers a casual two-finger salute.

The paparazzi were already screaming their lungs out, firing shutter sequences that sounded like tearing sheet metal:

”DANIEL! OVER HERE, DAN!”

”MARGOT! LOOK AT THE CABLE RISER!”

”FLORENCE, GIVE US THE PROFILE!”

And then the front passenger door clicked open, and the car’s secondary rear door swung wide again.

Scarlett Johansson stepped out onto the gold.

The entire press pen seemed to suffer an audible, collective hitch in its throat before the flashbulbs exploded into a blinding white wall of light.

Scarlett looked sensational. She was wearing a strapless, liquid-silver slip gown that looked like it had been poured directly over her frame, shimmering with every slight movement of her hips, her dark auburn bob styled with sleek, wet-look edges that highlighted her collarbones. She didn’t look hesitant. She didn’t look like an invited guest hovering on the perimeter.

She stepped straight onto the carpet, reached out, and casually hooked her fingers through Margot’s free hand with an easy, sisterly familiarity that told the entire world they hadn’t just arrived together; they had planned the whole damn thing.

Margot laughed at something Scarlett whispered, leaning her head close to Scarlett’s cheek for a split-second embrace, while Florence walked around to Daniel’s left side, sliding her hand into his crook.

The bank of three hundred entertainment journalists and photographers behind the velvet ropes went utterly, completely unhinged.

”SCARLETT! SCARLETT, TOGETHER!”

”ARE YOU TOGETHER?! MARGOT, LOOK LEFT!”

”DANIEL, OVER THE SHOULDER! WHO DRESSED THE FOUR OF YOU?!”

”SCARLETT, ARE YOU JOINING THEM?! LOOK HERE!”

The implications were sitting right there on the gold wool in broad daylight, bold and utterly unhidden. Hollywood had spent years whispering about Daniel’s open arrangement with Margot and Florence—a modern, unconventional marriage that the industry had quietly accepted because Daniel was too powerful and too polite to be dragged by tabloid smear jobs. But seeing Scarlett Johansson—one of the biggest, sharpest female stars in cinema—arrive out of the exact same vehicle, coordinating looks, holding hands with Margot, and leaning into Daniel’s space with total, serene ownership was a whole other tier of madness. It was the kind of setup that people usually only dreamed up on late-night internet message boards, happening right in front of the lens.

Daniel didn’t flinch. His expression remained entirely smooth, professional, and warm. He placed a gentle hand on the small of Florence’s back, smiled for the primary bank of still cameras, and began to move the trio smoothly down the press line before the shouting could turn into a full-blown press conference.

Further down the line, the rest of the cast was already causing their own brand of chaos.

Chris Hemsworth was standing near the fan barricade, leaning his massive six-foot-three frame over the chrome railing to sign a kid’s plastic Thor hammer. He was wearing a light gray three-piece linen suit that was clearly losing the battle against his body heat, a damp ring already forming around his stiff collar. He was holding a half-eaten soft pretzel that an eighty-year-old grandmother in the front row had shoved into his hand five minutes earlier.

”Mate, it’s saltier than the sea,” Hemsworth said to an Australian radio reporter who had shoved a boom mic into his armpit, chewing happily. ”Look at this crowd, though! Bloody hell, they told us it was going to be big, but this is like the Melbourne Cricket Ground on grand final day! Look at the bloke over there dressed as the big green bastard! Good on ya, mate!”

Hugh Dancy was three stations down, standing next to his wife, looking immaculate in a classic charcoal Savile Row three-piece. A young entertainment reporter was practically vibrating as she held a microphone to his chin.

”Hugh! Hugh, you play Bruce Banner—the internal heart of this massive machine! How does it feel to be here tonight and finally see the world react to your Hulk?”

Hugh offered a very polite, distinctly English smile, though his eyes carried the faint, lingering glaze of someone who had spent four months having his face mapped by technical software.

”Well, honestly, the greatest joy of tonight is that I can walk down this carpet without sixty-eight black and white infrared tracking dots glued to my jawline,” Hugh said, his voice dry and level. ”I spent four months looking like an eccentric reptile. My wife wouldn’t even look at me during morning coffee because she said I looked like an optical illusion. So to be wearing a clean tie and standing on two legs without a motion-capture helmet is an extraordinary personal triumph.”

”Did you take the purple trousers home?!” the reporter shouted.

”I burned them,” Hugh replied smoothly. ”In a metal drum behind my house.”

Near the main entrance to the Dolby, Samuel L. Jackson had basically set up his own sovereign territory. He was wearing an all-white, peak-lapel tuxedo jacket, a matching white Kangol hat turned backward, and tinted round spectacles. He was leaning against the media riser, completely ignoring the official press junket questions and bantering with the security guards he recognized from previous premieres.

”Man, get that camera out of my nostrils,” Sam barked with a wide, wicked grin at an AP cameraman who had zoomed in too close. ”Y’all knew what this was years ago! We told you we were coming, and now we here! Don’t be acting surprised like the bus was late!”

Robert Downey Jr. was doing what Robert Downey Jr. did best: commanding the room like an eccentric billionaire who also happened to be the world’s most entertaining carnival barker. He had bypassed the traditional photo marks entirely, walking right down the center of the gold carpet in custom matte-black Oliver Peoples shades and platform high-top sneakers with silver laces.

He spotted Daniel moving toward the main interview platform and broke off from an interview with Variety, trotting over with his arms wide.

”Look at him,” Robert shouted into the nearest camera crane, wrapping his arms around Daniel’s shoulders and planting a loud, theatrical, wet kiss directly onto Daniel’s left cheekbone. ”The maestro! The star-spangled general! The only man in North America who can tell me to stop talking and make me feel like I was the one who came up with the idea!”

Daniel laughed, wiping his cheek with the back of his thumb, shaking his head. ”Robert, behave yourself. The cameras are live.”

”The cameras love me, Daniel, and they are utterly terrified of you,” Robert declared, spinning on his heel to beam at Margot, Florence, and Scarlett. ”Ladies. The triple threat. If you need someone to rescue you from the Captain’s mandatory five-mile cooldown run tonight, I have two town cars and an armed escort waiting behind the Chinese Theatre.”

”We’re keeping him, Robert,” Scarlett said, her signature raspy purr cutting through the din as she adjusted the lapel of Daniel’s tuxedo with two fingers, perfectly at ease. ”Someone has to make sure he doesn’t read the trade reviews until tomorrow morning.”

”Good luck with that,” Florence snorted. ”He’s probably got them memorized already.”

Before the photographers could swarm again, the main broadcast host for the studio’s global livestream—a seasoned, impeccably groomed television personality named Wyatt—waved them over to the raised platform positioned right beneath the massive, gold-embossed AVENGERS archway.

”Daniel! Robert! Scarlett! Live to sixty countries right now—come on up!”

Daniel guided the group up the short wooden steps. Margot and Florence hung back near the rear of the riser with easy confidence, chatting with Jeremy Renner, who had just arrived with his mother, letting Daniel, Robert, and Scarlett take the center mics.

Wyatt looked like a man trying to steer a speedboat through a category five hurricane. His earpiece was visibly buzzing with director chatter, and his eyes kept flicking between Daniel’s calm, squared shoulders and Scarlett’s hand, which was resting casually, comfortably against Daniel’s lower ribcage.

”Daniel,” Wyatt began, leaning over the desk, projecting to be heard over the continuous roar from the street. ”Four hundred million dollars. The single biggest, most complex practical production ever attempted in modern Hollywood. You took this universe from the ground up, directed it, and you carried the shield. The entire world wants to know: what is the feeling right now, forty minutes before the curtain goes up?”

Daniel leaned into the gooseneck microphone. His voice was warm, completely measured, without a hint of the strain that usually plagued directors on their opening night.

”The feeling is gratitude, Wyatt,” Daniel said. ”Honestly. You look down this street, you see thousands of people who have been reading these characters for over a decade, people who sat through the solo movies, people who waited through the rain in Cleveland just to catch a glimpse. We didn’t make this movie in a computer terminal. We made it with two thousand crew members who poured their lives into the practical craft. Tonight belongs to them.”

”And the cast dynamic,” Wyatt pressed, his eyes darting to Scarlett with that hungry, tabloid sharpness. ”Scarlett, the chemistry between Natasha and Steve Rogers on screen is being called the absolute emotional spine of this film. And seeing you arrive tonight with Daniel, with Margot, with Florence... the internet is quite literally burning down as we speak. Can you speak to how close this team has become off-camera?”

It was a loaded question, blunt as a brick, designed to force a headline out of the four-way arrival.

Scarlett didn’t even blink. She tilted her chin up, a slow, incredibly charming smirk spreading across her red lips.

”We’re close because we all had to survive Daniel’s schedule, Wyatt,” Scarlett said smoothly, her tone light, dismissive, and full of playful banter. ”When you spend three weeks in thirty-degree weather in Ohio, watching your director jump over real, detonating taxicabs while telling you to keep your elbows tucked during a tactical roll, you build a very specific kind of trauma bond. We’re a family. Margot and Florence have been my absolute rocks through the entire press junket, and as for Daniel... well, he’s the boss. Even when he’s eating cold chicken out of Tupperware.”

Robert leaned directly over the desk, cutting in before Wyatt could fish for more details. ”Let’s be clear about the Tupperware, Wyatt. The man has no joy. He has vision, he has an army, but his palate is that of a medieval monk. I tried to give him an artisanal truffle fry in Cleveland and he looked at me like I had handed him an active grenade.”

The crowd below the riser laughed, and Daniel smoothly took the wheel back, leaning into the mic with a faint grin.

”Robert likes to exaggerate,” Daniel said, his voice deep and grounding. ”The truth is, when you have actors like Robert, like Scarlett, like Hugh, and Chris... my job as a director is mostly just staying out of their way and making sure the practical rigs don’t hit them in the head. We built something real because these actors committed to the physical reality of the scenes. When you see Tony Stark fall from the sky tonight, that’s Robert’s heart on the screen. When you see Black Widow holding the line in the dust, that’s Scarlett giving everything she has. The rest is just noise.”

Wyatt tried to pivot again, opening his mouth, but a sudden, rhythmic, thunderous cheer began to roll down the street from the corner of Highland.

It wasn’t the manic screaming that had greeted the younger stars. It was a deep, reverent, standing ovation that moved like a wave along the bleachers.

Daniel looked past the camera crane.

A pristine, vintage 1963 cream-colored Cadillac convertible had just pulled up to the foot of the golden carpet.

Sitting in the front passenger seat was Stan Lee.

He was wearing a light tan windbreaker over an open-collared white shirt, his iconic gold-rimmed tinted aviators catching the street lights. Beside him, holding his arm with careful, professional gentleness as the door opened, was Juniper, his longtime live-in caretaker, dressed in a sharp navy blazer.

Stan looked up at the towering, six-story banners hanging from the front of the El Capitan—the massive, embossed images of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow standing shoulder to shoulder against the city sky.

His weathered hands trembled slightly against the chrome door frame.

Daniel didn’t wait for Wyatt to finish his wrap-up. He didn’t wait for the floor manager to clear the segment.

”Excuse me, Wyatt,” Daniel said simply, stepping off the interview riser.

He walked down the short wooden steps, through the flashing wall of photographers who parted instantly for him, and moved straight toward the vintage Cadillac.

Margot, Florence, and Scarlett followed half a step behind him, giving the moment the respect it warranted.

Daniel reached the car just as Juniper helped Stan steady his footing on the thick gold carpet.

”Stan,” Daniel said softly, stepping forward and offering both hands to the old man.

Stan looked up through his tinted glasses. The roar of the ten thousand people on Hollywood Boulevard seemed to wash right over him, a lifetime of drafting tables, late-night deadlines, ink stains, and corporate bankruptcies melting into the warm California evening.

He gripped Daniel’s forearms with surprising strength, his old, papery hands holding tight to the fine wool of Daniel’s tuxedo.

”Daniel,” Stan whispered, his voice cracking slightly before he cleared his throat with a raspy cough. ”Look at this. Just... look at what you did.”

”We did it together, Stan,” Daniel said, keeping his voice low, steady, and private amidst the chaos. ”They’re your characters. We just built the house for them.”

Juniper smiled warmly, stepping back half a pace to let them have the space. ”He hasn’t stopped talking about this since five this morning, Mr. Miller. He made me check his tie four times.”

Stan straightened his spine, pulling his shoulders back, the showman returning as he patted Daniel solidly on the chest. ”A man’s got to look sharp for his own kids, Juniper! Look at these kids! Robert! Come over here and let me tell you what you’re doing wrong with the mustache!”

Robert ran over, dropping to one knee on the gold carpet right in front of Stan’s shoes, taking Stan’s hand with both of his own like he was greeting royalty.

Daniel stepped back, letting the cast surround the creator, the photographers going into a frenzy as the entire ensemble gathered around the ninety-three-year-old architect of their world.

Scarlett stood beside Daniel, her shoulder resting against his, her fingers lightly trailing along the seam of his trousers.

”You did that,” she murmured, her voice soft beneath the roar of the crowd.

Daniel looked down at the old man laughing with Robert and Chris, feeling a quiet, immovable weight settle into his ribs.

”Let’s go show them the movie,” Daniel said.

About two thousand miles away, in Tupelo, Mississippi, the humidity hung thick and heavy over the asphalt of the Barnes Crossing Mall parking lot.

It was 11:15 PM on a Thursday night.

The Malco IMAX theater was a standard, slightly dated suburban multiplex with sticky, soda-stained patterned carpets that smelled perpetually of industrial butter, cleaning solvent, and burnt sugar.

Toby sat on an upturned plastic milk crate he had dragged from the delivery bay behind the theater, leaning his back against the red brick exterior wall near the emergency exits. He was twenty-two years old, with shaggy brown hair tucked under a faded, sweat-stained Atlanta Braves cap, wearing a washed-out vintage Captain America: The First Avenger t-shirt that had two small pinholes near the hem.

Toby worked thirty-five hours a week at the local comic and hobby shop on Main Street, making eleven dollars an hour unpacking heavy cardboard boxes of trade paperbacks, sorting back issues of X-Men, and selling twenty-sided dice to middle schoolers.

He had been standing in this line since 2:30 in the afternoon.

Beside him sat his two best friends from high school: Keith, a lanky kid who worked at an auto parts warehouse, and Miller, who was currently cross-legged on a piece of cardboard, holding an unopened two-liter bottle of Mountain Dew between his knees.

The line behind them wrapped completely around the side of the cinema, snaking past the dumpster corral, through the Cineplex arcade entrance, and down the sidewalk toward the closed Sears anchor store. Over eight hundred people were waiting for the midnight screening. Almost everyone was wearing something connected to the universe—worn-out Stark Industries hoodies, cheap plastic Thor helmets, homemade leather wrist guards, or vintage 90s comic panels printed on cheap cotton.

A teenager two spots ahead of them was holding an iPad on the low-brightness setting, refreshing a live stream from the Hollywood premiere.

”Yo,” the kid called back, turning the screen toward Toby. ”Look at this. Daniel Miller just showed up on the gold carpet with Margot Robbie, Florence Pugh, and Scarlett Johansson all in the same car.”

Keith leaned over, squinting at the grainy stream. ”Wait, all three of them? Together?”

”Yeah, dude. Scarlett’s holding hands with Margot. They look like they’re going to the same party.”

Keith let out a low, whistle. ”Man. Daniel Miller is living a completely different life than the rest of the human race. The guy directs the biggest movies on Earth, acts a superhero, and goes home to a movie star commune.”

Toby didn’t look at the screen. He was looking at the digital marquee above the glass double doors:

AUDITORIUM 1: THE AVENGERS - 12:01 AM (SOLD OUT)

”I don’t care who he’s dating,” Toby said, his voice quiet, tapping his thumbs against his denim knees. ”I just want to know if the shield bounces right.”

”What do you mean, if it bounces right?” Miller asked from the cardboard.

”In the first movie, the shield had weight,” Toby said, looking out over the dark parking lot. ”When he hit a Hydra soldier with it, it sounded like an engine block falling on concrete. If they made this movie like those cheap digital sci-fi flicks with the rubber CGI people, I’m gonna be sick. I know it’s not possible for Daniel Miller to mess anything up, but the rest of Hollywood really doesn’t make me hold on to that hope. We’ve been waiting since forever for this, man. Iron Man came out when we were teenagers. If they mess this up, the whole thing’s dead.”

”They’re not gonna mess it up,” Keith said, nudging Toby’s boot with his sneaker. ”It’s Daniel Miller. The guy went to prison to make Shawshank. He doesn’t do cheap.”

At 11:30 PM, the heavy glass doors of the cinema swung open.

A tired-looking nineteen-year-old assistant manager wearing a stained red vest stepped out with a barcode scanner, holding up a megaphone that let out a brief, piercing squeal of feedback.

”Auditorium 1! Midnight IMAX! Have your digital passes out and your IDs ready! No outside food or drinks!”

The crowd didn’t walk; they surged forward like a single, eight-hundred-headed organism.

Toby shoved his hands into his pockets, his heart hammering against his ribs in a way it hadn’t since he was a teenager waiting for the school bus on the last day before summer break.

They moved through the lobby, under the neon neon strips, through the heavy smell of hot popcorn oil, and down the long, sloping hallway toward the massive double doors of Auditorium 1.

The theater was cavernous. Sixty feet of curved silver screen hung at the front of the room, illuminated by the dim blue house lights. The seats were old-school, high-backed fabric rockers, and within four minutes, every single one of the four hundred and eighty chairs was occupied.

The air in the room was electric. It was hot, thick with the smell of cheap nachos, body spray, and pure, concentrated nervous anticipation. Nobody was looking at their phones. Nobody was checking texts.

At 11:58 PM, the house lights began their slow, deliberate fade down to black.

The auditorium went dead, absolute silent. Four hundred and eighty people stopped talking at the exact same millisecond.

The massive digital projector behind them flared to life, a shaft of silver-white light cutting through the popcorn haze overhead.

The Miller Studios production vanity card rolled across the sixty-foot screen: the heavy, mechanical gears shifting, the deep brass fanfare vibrating through the massive subwoofers bolted beneath the concrete floor.

A lone guy in the middle rows shouted: ”HERE WE GO!”

The theater erupted into a brief, violent burst of clapping and cheering, and then plunged back into breathless silence.

The movie didn’t open with a title card.

It opened with the cold, gray, industrial emptiness of the remote S.H.I.E.L.D. facility. The hum of the Tesseract. The low, ominous rumble that Toby could feel directly in the bone of his sternum.

When Samuel L. Jackson stepped out of the helicopter, the gravel in his voice filling the theater, Toby leaned forward in his seat, his elbows resting on his knees, his chin propped on his knuckles.

For the next two hours, the theater in Tupelo, Mississippi ceased to exist.

Toby didn’t think about his job at the comic shop. He didn’t think about his car payment that was three days late. He didn’t think about the humidity outside.

The movie had weight.

You could feel the four hundred million dollars in every single frame, but it wasn’t spent on glossy, floaty visual clutter. It was spent on dirt. When the Helicarrier’s massive turbine failed, the metal screeched with a terrifying, mechanical scream that made Keith grab the armrests. When Hugh Dancy’s Bruce Banner lost control in the lower maintenance bay, his transformation wasn’t a cartoonish swell of muscles; it was a horrifying, bone-snapping, agonizing physical ordeal that left the entire theater gasping for air.

And then came the third act.

The transition to New York. The overcast, pale midwestern light of the Cleveland street shoot hitting the silver screen with the raw, documentary-style texture of a real invasion.

When the alien leviathan dropped through the tear in the sky, crushing the corner of the brick building, the dust that rolled across the screen wasn’t digital haze. It was thick, heavy, choking practical dust that settled on the real hoods of real cars.

Toby sat motionless, his breath locked in his chest.

On screen, Captain America vaulted over the hood of a crushed yellow taxi, slamming the heavy vibranium shield down to cover Black Widow as a real vehicle detonated into a ball of orange fire thirty feet away.

The impact rattled the ceiling tiles of Auditorium 1.

”Put on the suit,” Daniel’s voice commanded from the screen, cold, tactical, immovable.

The sequence moved like a freight train.

Tony Stark banking hard around the concrete pillars of the bridge. Hawkeye calling out angles from the roof. Thor bringing the hammer down with a concussive flash of real light that turned the silver screen into a blinding sheet of white.

And then the music began to swell.

The theme was slow, rising, heavy with the weight of four separate franchises finally colliding into a single point.

The camera dropped down to the street level.

Toby knew the shot was coming. He had seen the ninety-second teaser five hundred times on his phone. He had dissected every frame on Reddit.

But seeing it on a sixty-foot IMAX screen, with the full uncompressed audio mix shaking the floor, was something that bypassed logic and went straight into the nerve endings of his spine.

The 35mm lens curved around the wreckage of East 9th Street.

There they were.

Iron Man landing with a heavy, metallic clatter, his armor battered, scorched black, the repulsors whining to life.

Captain America stepping into the frame, pulling the heavy strap of the shield tight against his forearm, his jaw locked with pure, unyielding soldier’s resolve.

Thor spinning the hammer, lightning crackling between the steel plates of his armor.

Black Widow snapping fresh magazines into her sidearms, eyes cold and lethal.

Hawkeye drawing an arrow back to his cheekbone.

And the massive, terrifying, emerald bulk of the Hulk standing behind them, throwing his head back and letting out an earth-shattering roar that blew the theater’s speakers out into the lobby.

In Auditorium 1 of the Malco Cinema in Tupelo, Mississippi, the roof came off.

Four hundred and eighty people stood straight up out of their seats at the exact same moment.

Men in their thirties were screaming at the top of their lungs, waving their fists in the air. Keith was jumping up and down, his sneaker crushing an empty popcorn tub, shouting things that made no sense. Two strangers in the row ahead of them threw their arms around each other’s shoulders, screaming the theme music at the screen.

Toby didn’t scream.

He stood there in the dark, his hands gripping the back of the seat in front of him, staring up at the six figures standing together in the rubble.

He felt a hot, prickling tear spill over his lower eyelid, tracking slowly down his cheek through the dust of the theater.

It was real.

The thing he had carried in his head since he was a lonely teenager sitting on the floor of a comic shop with a stack of beaten-up paperbacks had been treated with respect. It hadn’t been mocked. It hadn’t been turned into a cheap commercial. It had been made by a man who looked at the mythology and believed it was worth four hundred million dollars of blood, iron, and fire.

”They did it,” Toby whispered to himself, his voice lost in the thunderous roar of the crowd around him. ”I don’t have words...”

---

Back inside the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, the lights were coming up.

The massive velvet curtains were slowly pulling shut across the screen as the final title card faded to black:

DIRECTED BY DANIEL MILLER

The silence in the room lasted for perhaps two seconds—the brief, stunned pause of two thousand five hundred industry professionals, studio executives, rival producers, and veteran actors processing that the entire standard of blockbuster filmmaking had just been permanently, violently reset.

And then the room erupted.

It was a wall of sound that was different from the fans in Mississippi. It was the heavy, rhythmic, thunderous applause of an industry conceding defeat.

Studio heads from Warner Bros and Paramount were standing in the lower loge boxes, clapping with hands that looked distinctly numb, knowing that their entire slate for the next eighteen months was going to be measured against what they had just watched.

In the center of the main orchestra level, the cast was already on their feet.

Robert Downey Jr. was hugging Hugh Dancy, whispering something into the British actor’s ear that made Hugh wipe his eyes with his sleeve. Chris Hemsworth was roaring with laughter, shaking the hand of the lead stunt coordinator three rows back.

Daniel stood in the center of the row.

Margot was on his right, her hand locked securely around his forearm, her face glowing with radiant, unvarnished pride. Florence was on his left, her fingers intertwined with his, her head resting against his shoulder for a brief, warm second as the applause washed over them.

And Scarlett stood beside Florence, her silver gown catching the house lights, her hazel-green eyes fixed on Daniel with a look of absolute, breathtaking clarity.

She reached across Florence’s shoulder, her fingers lightly grazing Daniel’s jawline, leaning in close so her voice could cut through the standing ovation.

”You changed the game, Captain,” Scarlett whispered, her smile brilliant, dangerous, and completely his.

Daniel looked down at her, feeling the heat of her touch, the quiet strength of Margot’s grip on his arm, and the solid presence of Florence beside him.

The long days in the Cleveland cold, the four-in-the-morning runs up the Bel Air canyons, the sixty-hour stretches in the dark editing bays—it was all behind him now.

Tom and Marcus pushed their way down the aisle through the crowd of congratulating executives, both of them looking exhausted, their ties slightly loose, but their eyes burning with the triumph of people who had just won a war.

Tom reached Daniel, clapping him hard on the shoulder, leaning in close over the noise of the ovation.

”The early midnight tracking from the east coast just started pinging the studio servers, Dan,” Tom said, his voice shaking slightly with adrenaline. ”It’s not just big. It’s an anomaly. We’re tracking for three hundred and forty million domestic by Sunday night.”

Marcus nodded, his face split by a rare, wide grin. ”The international numbers are going to break the reporting software. You own the summer, Dan.”

Daniel felt a deep, quiet, steady calm settle into his ribs.

The superheroes had taken their marks. The universe was established. Things were going as they were supposed to.

Daniel looked at Tom, a small, knowing, entirely unhurried smirk touching the corner of his lips.

”Call the travel coordinator, Tom,” Daniel said, his voice level and clear beneath the roar of the theater. ”Make sure the private transport to Auckland is fueled for Tuesday.”

Tom laughed, shaking his head. ”You’re not even going to take a week off, are you?”

”I’ve been dying to see what those two have built so far.” Daniel grinned.
