The Maker: Hollywood

The air inside the TCL Chinese Theatre was electric, thick with the smell of buttered popcorn and expensive cologne.

It was the world premiere of The Hulk, and every seat in the massive auditorium was packed. Industry executives, critics, and hundreds of screaming fans who had won lottery tickets were crammed together in the dark.

Sitting in the reserved center row, Daniel leaned back in his plush seat. To his right, Zack Snyder was practically vibrating with nervous energy, his knee bouncing up and down. To his left sat Hugh Dancy, who looked like he was bracing for an impact.

The lights dimmed until the theater was pitch black.

The Miller Studios logo flashed on screen, completely silent. Then, the screen faded to the gritty, sun-baked streets of the Santa Marta favela in Brazil.

There was no sweeping orchestral superhero theme. There was just the sound of a ragged, panicked intake of breath.

The audience quieted down instantly.

For the first forty minutes, Zack Snyder systematically turned the massive theater into a pressure cooker. The camera followed Hugh Dancy as Bruce Banner, and Dancy’s performance was agonizingly human. He didn’t look like a guy hiding a superpower. He looked like a man suffering from a terminal disease that he knew was going to kill everyone around him. When the military finally tracked him down and the chase began through the narrow, claustrophobic alleyways, the audience physically leaned forward in their seats.

A guy two rows behind Daniel muttered, ”Oh my god,” as Banner scrambled over a corrugated tin roof, slipping and cutting his hands on the rusty metal.

The tension was suffocating. Zack had stripped away all the usual glossy, slow-motion hero shots. It was dirty, handheld, and frantic.

Then came the bottling plant.

Banner was cornered. The military moved in with assault rifles and tear gas. Banner fell to his knees in the shadows, choking on the gas, clutching his chest.

On the massive theater speakers, the sound of his heartbeat started to pound. It grew louder, faster, drowning out the shouting soldiers. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

The audience went completely still. Nobody was eating popcorn. Nobody was whispering.

On screen, Banner’s eyes shot open. The irises were a bright, glowing, radioactive green.

The transformation wasn’t a clean, magical morph. It was violent. The sound design crunched and snapped as bones grew and reshaped. Banner let out a scream of pure agony that slowly deepened, pitching down into a guttural, terrifying roar.

A soldier shined a tactical flashlight into the dark corner.

The beam hit a massive, nine-foot-tall wall of green muscle. The Hulk turned his head, the high-contrast shadows highlighting the sheer, terrifying bulk of the monster.

The monster roared—a deafening, acoustic blast that literally vibrated the floorboards of the Chinese Theatre.

He didn’t throw a choreographed punch. He just grabbed a massive steel vat and casually hurled it through a brick wall like it was made of cardboard.

The theater erupted.

It wasn’t polite applause. It was a chaotic, visceral release of tension. People were screaming, cheering, gripping the armrests of their chairs. Zack had successfully made them terrified of the monster, but the second the military started shooting at it, the audience was entirely on the monster’s side.

Daniel looked over at Zack in the dark. The director had finally stopped bouncing his knee. He was smiling, watching the crowd react to the absolute destruction playing out on the screen.

The rest of the movie was a relentless, high-octane ride. The final fight in Harlem was brutal, heavy, and completely devoid of quips. When the screen finally cut to black, the applause was deafening.

But Daniel knew the real explosion was coming in about three minutes.

The credits rolled. The audience stayed in their seats, chattering loudly, buzzing with adrenaline.

Then, the screen faded back in.

A snowy, remote cabin in the middle of a dense forest. Inside, Bruce Banner was sitting at a small wooden table, wearing a heavy sweater, pouring a cup of tea. He looked exhausted, but calm.

Suddenly, there was a sharp knock at the door.

Banner froze.

The door pushed open. Robert Downey Jr. walked in, wearing a sharp, custom-tailored suit and tinted sunglasses, looking completely out of place in the freezing wilderness.

The entire theater let out a collective, high-pitched gasp.

Tony Stark looked around the dingy cabin, took off his sunglasses, and looked directly at Banner.

”You’re a hard guy to find, Doctor,” Stark said smoothly, slipping his hands into his pockets. ”We’re putting a team together.”

The theater literally exploded.

It was absolute pandemonium. A guy in the front row stood up and threw his hands in the air, screaming at the top of his lungs. People were cheering so loud it drowned out the final cut to black. The realization hit the room like a shockwave—Daniel Miller wasn’t just making standalone movies. The solo pieces were on the board. The Avengers were actually happening.

Daniel stood up as the house lights came on, turning to Hugh Dancy and pulling him into a hug.

”You killed it,” Daniel told the actor over the roar of the crowd.

Hugh looked completely overwhelmed, his face flushed, staring at the cheering audience. ”I think they liked it.”

”Yeah,” Daniel grinned. ”I think they did.”

By Friday morning, the internet was completely unreadable. It was just a wall of noise.

In his office in Burbank, Marcus was scrolling through Twitter, shaking his head. The hashtag #TheHulk had locked out every other trending topic globally.

@marvel_stan99: TONY STARK OMFG IM LITERALLY SCREAMING THE AVENGERS ARE COMING THIS IS NOT A DRILL

@moviebuff_kyle: bro zack snyder actually cooked. he made a horror movie. when the hulk first showed up in the shadows i actually got scared.

@sarah_loves_films: hugh dancy needs an oscar rn. the man looked like he was having a 2 hour panic attack. im exhausted just watching him sweat. best casting ever.

@ur_mom_69: the sound when he threw that truck at the helicopter holy shit my ears are still ringing.

@comicnerd_88: the fact that hulk doesn’t say a single word makes him 100x scarier. he’s just a force of nature. miller studios literally cannot miss bruh.

Over on the r/movies subreddit, the official discussion thread was a massive text wall of all-caps excitement and deep-dive analysis.

[Official Discussion] THE HULK (Spoilers!)

u/Cinephile_throwaway: Snyder showed so much restraint here. He kept his dark style but he didn’t abuse the slow-mo. When Hulk moves, it’s terrifyingly fast. It feels like watching a hurricane hit a city.

u/BoxOfficeJunkie: Opening night was crazy. My theater lost their minds altogether at the post credits scene. RDJ walking in just solidified it. The cinematic universe is actually so close goddamit!

u/ActionFan22: The military actually felt competent which was refreshing. They threw EVERYTHING at him and he just tanked it. That final fight was brutal.

u/darth_vader_hater: did anyone else notice banner’s heart rate monitor in the first act? they used the audio of it speeding up instead of background music for the chase scene. absolute genius tension building.

Marcus clicked off Reddit and opened the morning trade reports. The numbers were officially logged.

The door to Marcus’s office swung open. Tom walked in, holding two cups of black coffee. He set one down on Marcus’s desk and dropped into the armchair.

”Tell me the news is good,” Tom said, kicking his feet out.

”A hundred and forty-five million for the opening weekend,” Marcus said, tapping his screen. ”International numbers are still rolling in, but Europe is eating it up. It’s a massive hit. The practical budget Daniel approved for the Brazil shoot paid for itself ten times over.”

”Good,” Tom smiled, taking a sip of his coffee. ”I knew Zack had it in him if we just gave him the room to work. Have you talked to Dan today?”

”He’s over in Building F,” Marcus said. ”I sent him the box office numbers an hour ago. He texted back a thumbs-up emoji.”

Tom laughed. ”Classic. The biggest movie of the summer opens, and he’s probably sitting in the dark arguing with a computer animator about the shading on a space pirate.”

In his glass-walled office at the back of the animation floor, Daniel was doing exactly that, though he took a break to answer his ringing cell phone.

It was Zack Snyder.

”Hey, Zack. Congratulations,” Daniel said, putting the phone on speaker and leaning back in his leather chair.

”Dan, I can’t even process this,” Zack’s voice came through, sounding genuinely overwhelmed, the exhaustion of the premiere catching up to him. ”The reviews. The box office. My phone hasn’t stopped buzzing since midnight.”

”You earned it, man,” Daniel told him warmly. ”You built the perfect monster. You held the tension right up to the breaking point. The audience felt every ounce of that.”

”I just wanted to say thank you,” Zack said, his voice dropping a little, sounding deeply sincere. ”For trusting me with it. For the budget. For pulling me back when I got too in the weeds with the style. You let me make my movie, Dan.”

”I hired you to make your movie, Zack. Enjoy the victory lap,” Daniel smiled. ”Take a vacation. Sleep for a week. We’ll talk when you get back.”

”Will do. Thanks, boss.”

The line clicked off.

Daniel tossed his phone onto his desk and looked back at his massive, curved monitor.

The entire world was currently losing its mind over a hyper-violent, live-action superhero monster movie that he had produced and written. The internet was on fire with theories about Tony Stark, Captain America and the Avengers. The studio was printing money.

But right now, Daniel was entirely focused on a teenager riding a solar-powered surfboard.

He pulled up the rendered sequence of Jim Hawkins cutting through the spaceport. The cold cyan rim lighting Maya had suggested weeks ago looked incredible, separating the characters from the gritty, hand-painted textures of the background. The animation ran on the twos, giving the movement that sharp, snappy, comic-book edge. It looked cool. It looked fast.

But it was quiet.

Daniel stared at the footage. He needed the soul of the movie. He needed the score.

He picked his phone back up, swiped through his contacts, and dialed a number he had known by heart for years.

It rang twice before a familiar, warm, slightly weathered voice picked up.

”Daniel,” John Williams said, the fondness evident immediately. ”I was wondering when you were going to call. I saw the trades this morning. Congratulations on the green monster.”

”Thanks, John,” Daniel smiled, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his desk.

John Williams was a legend in every sense of the word, but to Daniel, he was the in-house heartbeat of his personal films. John had scored Star Wars when Daniel was just a kid trying to prove himself. He had scored Inception and Shutter Island. He was family.

”I assume you aren’t calling just to check on my health,” John chuckled softly. ”You have something for me.”

”I always have something for you,” Daniel said. He pulled up a folder of concept art on his screen, just looking at it while he talked. ”It’s an animated feature. Treasure Planet.”

”Pirates,” John mused. ”I haven’t done pirates in a while.”

”Space pirates,” Daniel corrected.

There was a brief pause on the line. ”Well, that’s a new one. Tell me the sound.”

Daniel closed his eyes, visualizing the galleons soaring through the nebula. ”I need the romance of the high seas mixed with the vacuum of space. I want the sweeping, heavy brass of an 18th-century naval fleet, but I want it underpinned with heavy synthesizers and electric guitars. It needs to sound classic, but rebellious. Like a kid running away from home on a rocket ship.”

John laughed, a rich, delighted sound. ”Brass and electric guitars. You always ask for the strangest combinations, Daniel.”

”Because you’re the only one who can make it sound like magic,” Daniel said completely honestly. ”We’re keeping a few of the original thematic structures from the story’s roots, but I need you to compose the original spine of the movie. I need a theme for Jim that sounds like angst turning into freedom. And I need a theme for Silver that sounds terrifying, but breaks your heart at the end.”

”Send me the reels, Daniel,” John said, the creative spark clearly ignited on the other end of the line. ”I’ll sit at the piano tomorrow morning. Let’s see what a space pirate sounds like.”

”I’ll have them sent over securely in ten minutes,” Daniel said. ”Thanks, John.”

”Always a pleasure, my boy. Talk soon.”

Daniel hung up the phone. He sat back in his chair, looking out through the glass walls of his office at the hundreds of animators working in the dark bullpen.

The machine was running perfectly. The Hulk was out in the world, the board was set for the biggest team-up in cinematic history, and Treasure Planet was finally getting its voice.

Daniel clicked his mouse, dragged the video files into a secure transfer folder, and hit send. Then he pulled his keyboard closer, pulled up the next sequence of storyboards, and went back to work.
