The Maker: Hollywood

The heavy, creeping sensation of dread didn’t just sit in Daniel’s stomach; it radiated outward, pulling the warmth from his extremities and leaving his skin feeling entirely numb.

He stood in the dark foyer of the Toluca Lake villa, the heavy wooden front door still cracked open behind him, letting in a thin slice of the humid night air. The silence inside the house was absolute. It wasn’t the peaceful, settling quiet of a house where someone was simply asleep in the other room. It was a heavy, stagnant, suffocating silence.

The bottle of expensive single malt scotch slipped from Daniel’s fingers.

He didn’t even try to catch it. The heavy glass bottle hit the hardwood floor of the entryway and shattered violently, the sharp, explosive sound echoing off the high ceilings. The rich, sharp scent of aged alcohol and peat instantly flooded the air, soaking into the expensive runner rug beneath his boots.

Daniel didn’t look down at the mess. He was already moving.

”Stan!” Daniel shouted, his deep voice ripping through the quiet house, abandoning any pretense of politeness.

He sprinted down the main hallway. He hit the light switch on the wall with the palm of his hand, flooding the corridor with bright, harsh light. The kitchen was to his left. Empty. The marble countertops were pristine, a single coffee mug sitting in the sink.

He turned right, taking the corner so fast the rubber soles of his boots skidded against the polished wood. He burst into the main living room. The large, plush sofas were empty. The television was off.

”Stan, answer me!” Daniel yelled, the panic in his chest fully overriding his usual composed, calculated exterior.

He pivoted, heading straight for the back of the house, toward the study. The door to the study was partially closed. A very faint, warm sliver of light was spilling out from beneath the gap.

Daniel hit the heavy oak door with his shoulder, pushing it open with enough force that the brass handle slammed loudly against the interior wall, leaving a dent in the drywall.

The study was exactly the way it always was. The walls were lined with massive, built-in bookshelves overflowing with hardcovers, trade paperbacks, and framed, original comic book covers. The warm, brass desk lamp was switched on, casting a pool of yellow light over the cluttered surface of the massive mahogany desk in the center of the room.

But the leather desk chair was pushed back, sitting at a crooked angle.

And lying on the intricate, dark red Persian rug directly behind the desk, was Stan.

”No. No, no, no,” Daniel breathed out, the words stumbling over each other in a frantic, desperate rush.

He sprinted across the room, completely ignoring the scattered papers on the floor, and dropped to his knees on the rug so hard the impact bruised his kneecaps.

Stan was completely unresponsive. He was lying on his side, his arm tucked awkwardly beneath his chest. His skin, usually flush with a lively, energetic warmth, was an absolutely terrifying shade of ashen grey. His lips looked almost blue in the dim light of the study.

Daniel grabbed Stan by the shoulders and gently rolled him onto his back.

”Stan, hey. Stan, wake up,” Daniel said, his voice loud, slapping the side of Stan’s face with two fingers, trying to shock him awake. ”Stan, look at me.”

Stan’s eyes remained closed. His head lolled slightly to the side.

Daniel leaned down, pressing his ear directly against Stan’s mouth while pressing two fingers firmly against the carotid artery on the side of the older man’s neck.

He waited for an agonizing, terrifying second.

There was a pulse. But it was incredibly weak. It was a rapid, thready fluttering against Daniel’s fingertips, like a dying bird trapped under the skin. And his breathing was wrong. It wasn’t steady. It was shallow, erratic, and accompanied by a wet, rattling sound in the back of his throat.

Daniel didn’t waste another second. He ripped his cell phone out of his front pocket, his thumb smashing the screen to pull up the keypad. He dialed 911 and hit the speaker button, throwing the phone onto the rug next to Stan’s head so he could keep both of his hands free.

The line rang once. Twice.

”911, what is the location of your emergency?” the dispatcher’s voice came through the small speaker, sharp and professional.

”I need an ambulance immediately,” Daniel barked, his voice tight, carrying the absolute, uncompromising authority of a man used to giving orders, though completely laced with raw panic. ”The address is 4420 Toluca Lake Avenue. I have an elderly male, late seventies, collapsed and entirely unresponsive. Pulse is rapid and weak. Breathing is shallow.”

”Okay, sir, help is on the way,” the dispatcher replied, the sound of rapid typing echoing in the background. ”Are you with the patient right now?”

”I’m right next to him,” Daniel said, keeping his fingers pressed against Stan’s neck, terrified that if he let go, the pulse would stop completely.

”Is he bleeding anywhere that you can see?”

Daniel quickly scanned Stan’s body. He checked his head for any sign of trauma from the fall. He checked his clothes. ”No. No external bleeding. He didn’t hit his head. He’s just... he’s pale. He’s sweating, but his skin is cold.”

”Okay. Do not try to move him,” the dispatcher instructed calmly. ”Keep him flat on his back. If he stops breathing, I need you to tell me immediately so I can walk you through CPR.”

”I know how to do CPR,” Daniel snapped, the frustration of helplessness bleeding into his tone. ”Just get the paramedics here. Tell them the front door is wide open.”

”They are three minutes out, sir. Stay on the line with me.”

Daniel stayed on the line. Those three minutes felt like three complete, excruciating lifetimes. He sat on the Persian rug, holding Stan’s frail, cold hand in his massive, calloused one, staring at the old man’s chest to make sure it kept rising and falling.

He didn’t pray. Daniel had never been a particularly religious man. But sitting in that study, surrounded by the framed comic books and the legacy of the man lying on the floor, he desperately pleaded with whatever force ran the universe to not take him away tonight.

Stan wasn’t just a business associate. He wasn’t just the guy who came up with the ideas. He was family. Stan had looked at him and seen a storyteller. Stan had trusted him. He had handed Daniel the keys to his life’s work, and in return, Daniel had sworn to protect it.

The piercing, oscillating wail of a siren finally cut through the quiet night air, growing rapidly louder until it abruptly cut off right outside the front windows of the villa.

”They’re here,” Daniel told the dispatcher, grabbing his phone.

”I’ll disconnect the line. Let them do their work, sir.”

Daniel threw the phone into his pocket and stood up just as heavy boots pounded down the hallway. Three paramedics burst into the study, carrying a massive orange trauma bag and a collapsible stretcher.

They didn’t care who Daniel was. They didn’t ask for autographs. They shoved him out of the way and descended on Stan like a highly trained pit crew.

”What do we have?” the lead paramedic asked, already ripping open a plastic package containing a blood pressure cuff and wrapping it tightly around Stan’s thin arm.

”Found him unresponsive about five minutes ago,” Daniel said, stepping back against the bookshelves to give them room, his chest heaving as if he had just run a marathon. ”Pulse is weak. Breathing is erratic. No visible trauma.”

”BP is crashing. 70 over 40 and dropping,” the second paramedic called out, securing a thick plastic oxygen mask over Stan’s nose and mouth. ”Heart rate is 130. We have a shock state. Abdomen is rigid and distended.”

The lead paramedic placed his hands on Stan’s stomach, pressing down gently. He pulled his hands back immediately, his face tightening.

”We need to move. Now,” the lead paramedic barked. ”Get the board. He’s bleeding internally. We’re going to Cedars. Call ahead to the trauma bay, tell them we need a massive transfusion protocol on standby.”

They didn’t waste time trying to stabilize him on the rug. They log-rolled Stan onto a hard plastic backboard, lifted him onto the stretcher, and locked the wheels.

”I’m coming with you,” Daniel stated, taking a step forward.

”You can’t ride in the back, sir, we need the space to work,” the paramedic said, already pushing the stretcher out of the study and down the hallway. ”Follow us in your car. Do not put your flashers on, do not run red lights. Just get to Cedars.”

Daniel didn’t argue. He followed them out of the house.

He watched as they loaded the stretcher into the back of the brightly lit ambulance, slamming the heavy rear doors shut. The siren immediately roared back to life, the red and blue strobe lights painting the manicured trees of Toluca Lake in violent, chaotic colors. The ambulance tore out of the driveway, the tires screaming against the asphalt.

Daniel sprinted to his Range Rover, threw himself into the driver’s seat, and slammed the accelerator down, chasing the flashing lights into the night.

The quiet, affluent neighborhood of Toluca Lake was not used to sirens.

When the ambulance had come screaming down the avenue, a freelance paparazzi stringer, who usually spent his nights parked down the street hoping to catch a glimpse of a different celebrity who lived in the area, had immediately rolled his window down.

When the ambulance pulled into Stan Lee’s driveway, the stringer had grabbed his long-lens camera. He didn’t get close enough to interfere with the paramedics, but he got a clear, unmistakable shot of the stretcher being loaded into the back of the rig, with Daniel Miller standing in the driveway under the flashing red lights, looking completely frantic.

The stringer didn’t wait. He didn’t verify the medical condition. He uploaded the photos directly to his contact at TMZ via a cellular hotspot, attached a quick caption, and collected his wire transfer.

Fifteen minutes later, while Daniel was still speeding down the 101 freeway behind the ambulance, the article went live.

BREAKING: FATHER OF MARVEL STAN LEE RUSHED TO HOSPITAL, FOUND UNRESPONSIVE AT HOME

The digital shockwave was instantaneous, massive, and entirely unprecedented.

The internet did not just react; it completely, categorically stopped. Every other trending topic on global social media platforms—politics, sports, celebrity gossip—was instantly vaporized, replaced entirely by a single, unified wave of absolute panic.

Stan Lee was not just a comic book writer in this universe. Because of the massive, record-shattering success of Miller Studios over the last few years, Stan had been elevated from a beloved industry legend to a global cultural grandfather. The characters he had created decades ago were currently dominating the zeitgeist.

Within ten minutes of the TMZ article going live, the servers for Twitter and Reddit began to buckle under the sheer, unmanageable volume of traffic.

Nobody cared about Daniel’s engagement anymore. Nobody was arguing about box office numbers or movie reviews. The entire pop-culture world collectively held its breath, completely terrified that they were about to lose the man who had built their mythology.

On Reddit, the main pop-culture and comic book forums were locked down by moderators to prevent spam, funneling millions of users into massive, constantly refreshing mega-threads.

The comments weren’t just standard, hollow celebrity prayers. They were raw, deeply personal, and incredibly emotional.

’QueensNative99’: please tell me this is a fake report. please god tell me this is fake. stan cannot die. i literally just got out of the theater watching spiderman for the third time. that character is the only reason i got through high school without completely giving up. stan gave us peter parker. he cant leave us yet.

’ArmorStark’: Im sitting in my living room crying right now. I don’t even know the man personally but it feels like my own grandpa is in the hospital. Iron man was the first comic I ever picked up. seeing a hero who was actually flawed, who struggled with his own demons and still tried to do the right thing... it made me feel seen when I thought nobody else understood. please pull through stan.

’BrooklynShield’: this is making me sick to my stomach. Captain America was my whole childhood. I was one of the rare ones that read the comics before Daniel publicized them under Miller Studios. I was the smallest kid in my class, i got bullied every single day, and i used to read those comics and pretend i had a shield. Stan created a hero who didn’t win because he was strong, he won because he didn’t like bullies. that literally shaped my entire moral compass as a kid. praying so hard right now.

’AsgardianThunder’: he gave millions of kids a safe place to hide when the real world was too loud. the hospital better have their best doctors on him right now.

’MarvelFanatic’: the article says Daniel Miller was the one who found him and called 911. i cant even imagine what daniel is going through right now. they were always together at the premieres. you could tell they actually loved each other. sending all the energy in the world to cedars-sinai tonight.

The hashtag #PrayForStan became the number one trending topic globally in less than twenty minutes. Millions of people, across dozens of time zones, simply sat in front of their screens, refreshing the news feeds, entirely united by a shared, desperate hope for a man they had never met.

The emergency room at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was a controlled, brightly lit chaos of beeping monitors, rushing nurses, and the heavy smell of bleach and antiseptic.

When the ambulance had arrived, they hadn’t stopped in the main triage area. They had blown straight through the double doors of the trauma bay, a swarm of doctors in blue scrubs descending on the stretcher before Daniel had even parked his car in the red zone outside.

Daniel was currently pacing back and forth in a small, private family consultation room just off the main ER floor. The hospital administrators had recognized him immediately and, anticipating the inevitable media circus, had quickly ushered him away from the public waiting area for his own security.

He didn’t care about the security. He didn’t care about the reporters that were likely already setting up satellite trucks on the sidewalk outside.

He just kept pacing.

His boots scuffed against the cheap linoleum floor. His hands were shaking. He kept running his fingers through his hair, his mind racing through a thousand terrible, uncontrollable scenarios.

The door to the consultation room opened.

A tall, exhausted-looking man in dark blue surgical scrubs walked in. He had a surgical cap pulled low over his forehead and a mask pulled down around his neck. His name badge read Dr. Aris, Chief of Trauma Surgery.

Daniel stopped pacing instantly. He closed the distance between them in two massive strides, his heart hammering in his throat.

”Where is he?” Daniel demanded, his voice tight. ”What happened?”

Dr. Aris didn’t flinch at the aggression. He looked at Daniel with a calm, deeply serious expression, the kind of look a doctor only uses when they are about to deliver catastrophic news.

”Mr. Miller,” Dr. Aris said, keeping his voice low and steady. ”Please, sit down.”

”I don’t want to sit down. Tell me what is wrong with him,” Daniel said, his jaw locked so tight his teeth ached.

Dr. Aris let out a slow breath. He didn’t force the issue.

”Stan has suffered a ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm,” the surgeon explained, stripping away the medical jargon to deliver the brutal, straightforward truth. ”The aorta is the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the body. Over time, the wall of that vessel in his abdomen weakened and ballooned outward. Tonight, that balloon popped.”

Daniel felt the air get completely sucked out of the small room.

”He is currently bleeding massively into his abdominal cavity,” Dr. Aris continued, his tone clinical but sympathetic. ”That is why his blood pressure crashed and why he lost consciousness. We are pumping him full of blood right now just to keep his heart beating, but it is a temporary fix.”

”Fix it,” Daniel said, his voice cracking slightly, the billionaire studio head entirely helpless in the face of basic human biology. ”Take him to an operating room and fix the artery. Do whatever you have to do. I don’t care what it costs, bring in the best specialists in the state. I will pay for everything.”

”Mr. Miller, this isn’t about resources,” Dr. Aris said gently, holding his hand up to stop the panic. ”I am the best vascular surgeon in this hospital, and my team is already scrubbed in and waiting. But you need to understand the reality of this situation.”

Dr. Aris paused, making sure Daniel was making eye contact.

”Stan is nearing his eighties,” the surgeon said, the words hitting like physical blows. ”His heart is old. His body is frail. The surgery required to repair a ruptured AAA is incredibly invasive, traumatic, and dangerous. We have to open his entire abdomen, clamp the main artery, and graft a synthetic tube in place of the ruptured section. Even for a healthy forty-year-old, the mortality rate for a ruptured aneurysm is extremely high. For a man of Stan’s age and physical condition... the chances of his heart giving out on the operating table are severe.”

Daniel stared at the doctor.

The impenetrable armor that Daniel Miller wore to navigate the cutthroat, vicious world of Hollywood—the armor that allowed him to stare down hostile executives, manage billion-dollar budgets, and completely control the global cultural narrative—completely, instantaneously shattered.

It didn’t crack. It simply ceased to exist.

He wasn’t a titan of the industry anymore. He was just a terrified kid being told that the grandfather who had believed in him was actively dying on a table in the next room.

Daniel’s knees literally gave out.

He didn’t collapse to the floor, but he stumbled backward, his heavy frame hitting the wall of the consultation room. He slid down the wall until he was sitting on the cold linoleum, his knees pulled up, his large hands coming up to cover his face.

A ragged, agonizing sob tore out of his chest.

For the first time in his public or private life since building the studio, Daniel Miller openly broke down. The tears spilled hot and fast over his calloused hands. He couldn’t breathe. The grief and the absolute, paralyzing terror of losing Stan completely overwhelmed his nervous system. He sat on the floor of the hospital, crying with a loud, broken intensity that made the trauma surgeon look away in quiet respect.

The door to the consultation room suddenly flew open.

Margot and Florence burst into the room.

They had been at different events on opposite sides of the city. Margot was wearing an expensive, tailored dinner dress, her hair perfectly styled. Florence was wearing casual jeans and a leather jacket. They had both abandoned their nights the absolute second Elena had called them with the news, breaking multiple traffic laws to get to the hospital.

They looked terrified, their own faces pale and tear-stained.

But the second they saw Daniel sitting on the floor, broken and sobbing against the wall, their own panic was instantly compartmentalized.

They didn’t hesitate. They didn’t ask the doctor what was happening. They rushed across the room and dropped to the floor next to him.

Margot threw her arms around Daniel’s broad shoulders, burying her face into his neck, holding onto him with a fierce, desperate strength. Florence dropped to her knees on his other side, grabbing his large, shaking hands and pulling them away from his face, pressing them tightly against her own chest.

”We’re here,” Margot whispered, her voice shaking violently as the tears tracked down her own cheeks, ruining her makeup. ”We’re here, Dan. We’ve got you.”

”Breathe, darling. Look at me, just breathe,” Florence choked out, crying just as hard, but keeping her grip on his hands like a vice.

They formed a tight, unbreakable circle on the floor of the hospital room. They didn’t offer empty platitudes. They didn’t tell him everything was going to be fine, because they didn’t know if it was. They just anchored him. They absorbed his panic, wrapping their arms around him and holding him together when he was completely falling apart.

Dr. Aris stood by the door, waiting quietly for a long, heavy minute, allowing the trio to find their collective footing.

When Daniel’s breathing finally started to slow, changing from frantic gasps to heavy, shuddering exhales, a hospital administrator in a grey suit stepped into the room, holding a metal clipboard. He looked incredibly uncomfortable interrupting the emotional scene, but the ticking clock demanded it.

”Dr. Aris, his pressure is dropping again,” the administrator said quietly. ”Anesthesia is ready to push the induction meds, but we have a legal block.”

Dr. Aris nodded grimly and stepped forward.

”Mr. Miller,” the surgeon said, his voice cutting through the quiet crying on the floor. ”We are out of time. If we do not open him up right this second, he will bleed out internally and die in the next five minutes. But because the surgical mortality risk is so high, hospital protocol absolutely dictates that we need an emergency consent form and a death waiver signed before we can make the first incision.”

Daniel looked up. His eyes were bloodshot, his face wet with tears.

”Then let me sign it,” Daniel said, his voice raspy.

”We can’t just let anyone sign it,” the hospital administrator interjected, looking apologetic but firm. ”It has to be a direct, legal relative, or someone with established medical power of attorney. We checked his charts, but there is no proxy listed on file. Is there any family we can call? A son? A brother?”

The room went completely silent.

Stan didn’t have any family left. The industry was his family. The characters he created were his children. But in terms of actual, legal bloodlines sitting in a waiting room, he was entirely alone.

Daniel looked at the administrator.

He didn’t look back at Margot or Florence. He didn’t consult his lawyers. He didn’t think about the legal ramifications, the potential lawsuits, or the bureaucratic red tape.

Daniel slowly pushed himself up off the linoleum floor. Margot and Florence stood up with him, refusing to let go of his arms, standing on either side of him like two pillars of absolute support.

Daniel towered over the hospital administrator. The tears were still wet on his face, but the terrifying, unshakeable authority had returned to his eyes. He wasn’t a billionaire studio head lying to a hospital worker. He was a man stating an absolute, undeniable truth about his family.

”I am his grandson,” Daniel said.

His voice wasn’t loud. It wasn’t aggressive. It was thick with emotion, but it possessed a heavy, ringing conviction that left absolutely zero room for debate.

Since the day they met, their dynamic had never been corporate. Stan had guided him, supported him, and loved him with the unconditional pride of a grandfather watching his legacy be protected. And Daniel had loved him back, fiercely and protectively. In every way that actually mattered outside of a genetic test, Daniel was his grandson.

The hospital administrator looked at Daniel’s face. He looked at the tears, the raw grief, and the absolute conviction.

The administrator didn’t ask for a birth certificate. He didn’t ask for a driver’s license. He just looked at Dr. Aris, who gave a single, sharp nod.

The administrator held out the metal clipboard and a black pen.

”Sign on the bottom line, sir,” the administrator said quietly. ”It acknowledges that you understand the severe risk of mortality during the procedure.”

Daniel reached out. His massive, calloused hand was shaking so badly he could barely grip the thin plastic barrel of the pen.

He placed the pen against the paper. He didn’t read the dense legal text. He just signed his name in a messy, jagged scrawl, officially authorizing the hospital to try and save his grandfather’s life, and simultaneously accepting the agonizing reality that they might kill him in the process.

He handed the clipboard back.

”Take him in,” Dr. Aris said immediately, turning on his heel and sprinting out the door toward the scrub sinks.

The administrator followed, the door clicking shut behind them.

The silence rushed back into the room.

A nurse came in a few minutes later and gently escorted Daniel, Margot, and Florence out of the consultation room and down a long, quiet hallway to the surgical waiting area.

The contrast was jarring.

Outside the hospital, the world was actively losing its mind. The news networks were running live special reports. Millions of fans were frantically tweeting, completely devastated by the news. Paparazzi were swarming the security barricades at the edge of the Cedars-Sinai property, trying to get a camera lens pointed at a window.

But inside the surgical waiting room, there was no noise. There were no flashing cameras, and there was no studio empire.

There was just a row of cheap, uncomfortable plastic chairs sitting under the harsh, buzzing fluorescent lights.

Daniel sat in the middle chair. He was hunched forward, his elbows resting on his knees, staring blankly at the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway that led to the operating theaters.

Florence sat in the chair to his left. She had both of her hands wrapped tightly around his massive left hand, her head resting gently against his shoulder, her eyes closed as she silently prayed.

Margot sat in the chair to his right. She was holding his right hand, her thumb slowly, rhythmically tracing circles over his knuckles to try and keep him grounded.

Daniel didn’t move. He didn’t speak. He just stared at the doors, feeling the cold air conditioning of the hospital seep into his bones, absolutely terrified that the man who had given him a family was never going to walk out of them.
