The Maker: Hollywood

Stephen Walker sat perfectly still on the edge of his mattress, staring at the glowing screen of his smartphone.

The apartment around him was completely silent, save for the low, steady hum of the central air conditioning. It was a nice place in West Hollywood, paid for by the studio allowance he had been living on during the shoot. It had modern appliances, floor-to-ceiling windows, and hardwood floors. It was a far cry from the cramped, drafty spaces he was used to, but right now, Stephen wasn’t looking at the apartment.

He was looking at the banking application open on his phone.

He closed his eyes, took a deep, shaky breath, and opened them again. He pulled his thumb down on the screen, forcing the app to refresh. The little loading circle spun for a fraction of a second.

The number didn’t change.

It sat there, glaring back at him in bold, black digital font. It was a multi-million dollar direct deposit. The line item description just read: MILLER STUDIOS - PERFORMANCE BONUS.

Stephen’s hands started to shake. He dropped the phone onto the mattress like it was burning him, standing up and backing away from the bed. He ran both hands through his messy hair, his heart hammering against his ribs in a frantic, terrifying rhythm.

This wasn’t his standard acting fee. He had already been paid his base salary for the movie, which in itself had been more money than he had ever seen in his life. But this? This was the backend. This was the performance bonus that kicked in because Spider-Man had just shattered the billion-dollar mark at the global box office.

Stephen looked around the empty bedroom, feeling completely untethered from reality.

For the first time in his life, the crushing, suffocating weight of financial panic wasn’t there. It had been his constant companion for as long as he could remember.

His mind involuntarily flashed back to Queens. He thought about the small, two-bedroom apartment that always smelled faintly of bleach and old cooking oil. He thought about the winter months when they had to keep the oven door open just to generate enough heat to keep the living room warm because the building superintendent refused to fix the radiators.

And he thought about his father.

Stephen’s father wasn’t dead. He wasn’t some tragic casualty of a terrible accident. The truth was far more mundane, and far more pathetic. He was just a coward. When Stephen was three years old, the medical bills from a bout of childhood asthma had piled up next to the rent notices and the credit card bills. The pressure had cracked him. Instead of stepping up, his father had simply packed a duffel bag on a Tuesday afternoon while Stephen was taking a nap, walked out the front door, and never came back. He didn’t even leave a note.

From that day forward, it had just been Stephen and his mom.

She had carried the entire world on her shoulders so he wouldn’t have to. She worked double shifts at a diner, coming home at two in the morning smelling like deep fryer grease and cheap coffee. She would sit on the edge of the worn-out couch, quietly rubbing her swollen, aching feet, pretending she wasn’t exhausted. Whenever the eviction notices came, she hid them in the bottom of a drawer and picked up extra weekend shifts cleaning office buildings just to make the rent. She absorbed all the stress, all the humiliation of poverty, just so Stephen could go to school and read his comic books.

He had never told her about the bullying. He had never told her about the older kids who shoved him into lockers or tore his backpacks, because he knew she already had too much on her plate. He just kept his head down, read his comics, and dreamed about a life where he didn’t feel so helpless.

And then, he had written that stupid, desperate fan mail to Stan Lee.

He looked back down at the phone resting on the bed.

The number was real. It was sitting in his checking account.

Panic suddenly spiked in his chest. It has to be a mistake, Stephen thought, his breathing growing shallow. There is no way they meant to send me this much. Elena’s payroll department added a zero. Or two zeros. They’re going to realize they messed up, and they’re going to ask for it back, and I’m going to be on the hook for some massive banking fee.

He couldn’t just sit there. He snatched the phone off the bed, his thumbs frantically navigating to his contacts. He bypassed his agent, his manager, and his publicist. He scrolled straight to the number he had saved under a simple, unassuming initial.

He hit dial and pressed the phone to his ear.

It rang twice.

”I’m in the middle of a wardrobe fitting, kid,” Daniel Miller’s voice came through the speaker. Daniel had recently flown back to Los Angeles from London to shoot the green screen sequences for Captain America, and he sounded distracted. ”What’s up? Are the press tour junkets driving you crazy?”

”Daniel, listen to me, you have to call Elena,” Stephen blurted out, his words tripping over each other in his panic. He started pacing back and forth across the hardwood floor of his bedroom. ”There’s been a massive mistake. The payroll department screwed up. They deposited the wrong amount into my account. I haven’t touched it, I swear, I haven’t bought anything. You need to pull it back before the bank flags it for fraud or something.”

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. The sound of fabric rustling stopped.

”Stephen. Breathe,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into that calm, steady authority that instantly grounded whoever he was talking to. ”What are you talking about?”

”The bonus,” Stephen hyperventilated slightly. ”The performance bonus. It just hit my account. Dan, the number is... it’s insane. It’s too much. Somebody made a typo.”

Daniel let out a low, familiar chuckle. It wasn’t mocking; it was warm.

”Stephen, do you honestly think my executive payroll department makes multi-million dollar typos?” Daniel asked playfully.

Stephen stopped pacing. ”But... this is a mistake, right? I can’t keep this.”

”It’s not a mistake, kid,” Daniel said firmly. ”That is your contracted backend cut. Spider-Man crossed a billion dollars. You carried a billion-dollar blockbuster on your shoulders. You put in the work, you dealt with the pressure, and the audience bought tickets to see you. That money is exactly what you earned.”

Stephen’s knees suddenly felt weak. He walked backward and sat down heavily on the edge of the mattress, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees.

”It’s real?” Stephen whispered, his voice cracking.

”It’s real,” Daniel confirmed gently. Then, the tone of his voice shifted, losing the casual banter and taking on a sharp, protective edge. ”But listen to me very carefully. You are young, and you are officially rich. That is a very dangerous combination in this town. You are not going to go out and buy a fleet of sports cars. You are not going to buy a nightclub. First thing Monday morning, I am personally introducing you to my private financial advisor. He’s going to lock that money down in a trust, he’s going to build you an investment portfolio, and he’s going to make sure that you never have to look at a price tag for the rest of your natural life. Do you understand me? I am not letting you blow this.”

The stern, fiercely protective nature of Daniel’s voice completely broke whatever emotional dam Stephen had left.

The professional boundary between studio boss and actor had dissolved years ago, but right now, it was entirely gone. Stephen looked at the floor, his vision completely blurring with hot tears.

He thought about the day Daniel had shown up at his high school. He thought about Daniel listening to him act out the scene from 12 Angry Men. He thought about the Miller Arts grant that had paid his tuition, taking the unbearable financial burden off his mother’s shoulders. Daniel hadn’t just given him a job; he had given him a life.

”I understand,” Stephen choked out, a heavy sob tearing out of his throat. He pressed his free hand over his eyes, completely unable to stop the tears from falling. ”I won’t blow it. I promise.”

”Hey,” Daniel’s voice softened completely. ”It’s okay. Take a breath.”

”I just... I don’t know how to thank you,” Stephen cried, the raw, unfiltered gratitude pouring out of him. ”You didn’t have to do any of this. You didn’t have to read that letter. You didn’t have to pay for my school. You changed everything. You changed my whole life, big bro. I owe you everything.”

Daniel was quiet for a moment. When he spoke again, the older brother dynamic was firmly in place.

”You don’t owe me anything, Stephen. You did the heavy lifting. I just pointed the camera,” Daniel said warmly. ”Now, dry your eyes. I’m going to hang up the phone. I want you to get in your car, go over to the housing we set up for your mom, and share the good news with her. Go take care of your family.”

”I will,” Stephen wiped his face with the back of his hand, sniffling loudly. ”Thank you, Dan. Really.”

”I’ll see you on Monday, kid. Drive safe.”

The line clicked dead.

Stephen lowered the phone. He sat in the quiet apartment for another two minutes, just breathing, letting the reality of the situation settle into his bones.

He looked at the number on the screen one last time.

Then, the realization finally, truly hit him.

It wasn’t just about having money to buy a nice house or a good car. It was about time. He had enough money to buy his mother’s time back.

He jumped up from the bed, grabbed his car keys off the kitchen counter, and bolted out the front door.

The drive across town felt like it took three days instead of forty-five minutes.

Miller Studios had set Stephen’s mother up in a beautiful, fully furnished rental home in a quiet, gated community in Studio City during the intense weeks of the press tour, wanting to ensure she had a safe, comfortable place to stay while dealing with the sudden media attention surrounding her son.

Stephen pulled his car into the driveway, threw the transmission into park before the vehicle had completely stopped moving, and practically sprinted up the front walkway.

He unlocked the front door and pushed it open.

The house smelled like garlic, olive oil, and baking bread.

”Mom?” Stephen called out, quickly kicking his shoes off by the door.

”In the kitchen, honey!” her voice called back.

Stephen walked down the wide hallway and stepped into the kitchen. His mother was standing by the stove, wearing a comfortable sweater, stirring a large pot of pasta sauce. Even though she was staying in a luxury rental paid for by a billionaire, her habits hadn’t changed. She was still cooking, still taking care of things, still moving with the quiet efficiency of a woman who had spent twenty years working on her feet.

She turned around, wiping her hands on a dish towel. When she saw Stephen’s face—his red, puffy eyes and his frantic energy—her maternal instincts instantly spiked. She dropped the towel on the counter and took a step toward him, a look of deep concern crossing her face.

”Stephen? What is it? What’s wrong?” she asked, her hands reaching out to grab his arms. ”Are you hurt? Did something happen at the studio?”

”No, mom, nothing is wrong,” Stephen said quickly, his voice shaking. He let out a breathless, watery laugh. ”Everything is fine.”

”You’re crying,” she said, her thumbs brushing against his sleeves.

Stephen didn’t say anything. He reached into his pocket, pulled his phone out, and unlocked the screen. The banking application was still open.

He took her hand, gently led her over to the kitchen island, and pulled out one of the barstools.

”Sit down,” Stephen told her softly.

She looked at him, completely confused, but she sat down.

Stephen placed the phone flat on the marble countertop and slid it across to her.

”Look,” he said.

She looked down at the glowing screen. She squinted slightly, reading the line item, and then her eyes tracked over to the bold digital numbers on the right side of the screen.

She stared at it. For ten seconds, the kitchen was absolutely silent except for the gentle bubbling of the pasta sauce on the stove.

She didn’t quite process it at first. Her brain, conditioned by two decades of calculating exact grocery budgets to the penny and stressing over fifty-dollar electric bills, simply refused to comprehend the commas she was looking at.

”Stephen...” she whispered, looking up at him, her brow furrowed in utter confusion. ”What... what is this? Is this a mistake?”

”No,” Stephen said, the tears spilling over his eyelashes again. He stepped closer, resting his hands on her shoulders. ”It’s real. Daniel just called me. It’s the bonus for the movie. The movie made a billion dollars, mom.”

She looked back down at the phone. Her hand slowly came up to cover her mouth.

”Mom,” Stephen said, his voice cracking completely, all the years of watching her suffer pouring out of him. ”You’re done. Do you hear me? You are completely done. You never have to go back to the diner. You never have to clean another office. You never have to worry about rent, or medical bills, or anything, ever again. I’m buying you a house wherever you want. I’m retiring you today.”

A profound, violent shudder ripped through her small frame.

The realization crashed over her with the force of a tidal wave. All the fear. All the nights she had cried silently in the bathroom so Stephen wouldn’t hear her. All the exhaustion, the humiliation, the sheer, crushing weight of trying to keep her son alive in a world that didn’t care about them—it was all over.

She let out a loud, broken sob, her hands flying up to cover her face as she bent forward over the kitchen island.

Stephen wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her hair. She turned and practically tackled him, wrapping her arms around his waist and holding onto him with a desperate, fierce strength.

They stood there in the middle of the kitchen, holding each other and crying their hearts out. It wasn’t polite, quiet crying. It was the messy, loud, cathartic release of twenty years of survival.

”I’m so proud of you,” she sobbed into his chest, her voice muffled against his shirt. ”My boy. My beautiful boy. I’m so proud of you.”

”I did it for you, mom,” Stephen cried, holding her tight. ”We’re safe now. We’re safe.”

They stayed like that for a long time, the pasta sauce forgotten on the stove, surrounded by the warmth of a future that had finally, permanently changed.

Later that evening, the sun had fully set over Los Angeles, painting the sky in deep bruises of purple and dark blue.

Daniel was driving his Range Rover along the winding, tree-lined streets of Toluca Lake.

He was tired. The green screen work for the Captain America train sequence had been grueling, requiring him to throw himself against padded walls for hours while Joe Johnston directed the action. But despite the physical exhaustion, Daniel’s mood was incredibly light.

He had a rare, open gap in his schedule for the rest of the night. Margot was at a producer’s dinner, and Florence was out with some friends from her acting class. Daniel had decided to use the free evening to do something he always tried to make time for, even when the studio logistics threatened to drown him.

He was going to see Stan.

Daniel visited Stan Lee’s sprawling Toluca Lake villa regularly whenever he could carve out a few free hours. The relationship between the billionaire studio head and the legendary comic book creator was unique. He was the grandfather of the entire universe Daniel was currently bringing to life.

But tonight’s visit had a specific purpose. Daniel wanted to share the news of Stephen’s bonus with Stan.

Stan had told Daniel multiple times over the years that out of all the characters he had helped create, Peter Parker was always his favorite. The kid from Queens held a special, deeply personal place in the old man’s heart. And it was Stan who had originally read Stephen’s fan mail all those years ago. It was Stan who had told him, ”We have to do something for this kid.”

Daniel wanted to sit in Stan’s comfortable study, pour two glasses of good scotch, and tell him that the kid who wrote that letter had just anchored a billion-dollar movie and retired his mother. It was the kind of full-circle story that Stan lived for.

The Range Rover’s headlights swept across the familiar, wrought-iron gates of Stan’s property. The gates were open.

Daniel pulled into the long, paved driveway, the tires crunching softly against the loose gravel near the edges. The property was heavily secluded, surrounded by tall hedges and ancient oak trees that blocked out the noise of the city.

He parked the car near the front garage and cut the engine.

As he stepped out of the vehicle, the cool night air hit him. He reached into the backseat, grabbed a bottle of expensive single malt scotch he had brought from his own collection, and shut the door.

He walked up the wide stone path toward the front entrance of the villa.

Usually, the house was alive. Stan loved having the lights on. Even if he was just sitting in his study reading, the warm glow of the lamps would spill out through the large front windows, illuminating the porch.

Tonight, the front of the house was completely dark.

Daniel stopped at the bottom of the porch steps, a slight frown creasing his forehead.

He looked at the large, heavy wooden front door. It wasn’t closed. It was sitting ajar, cracked open by a few inches, revealing the pitch-black foyer inside.

The silence hanging over the property was sudden and heavy. There were no crickets, no wind rustling the trees. Just a dead, suffocating quiet.

”Stan?” Daniel called out, his deep voice carrying clearly across the quiet driveway.

There was no answer.

Daniel walked up the steps, his boots making no sound on the stone. He reached out with his free hand and pushed the heavy wooden door. It swung inward with a soft, slow creak, revealing the dark interior of the house.

The air inside felt stale.

Daniel stepped over the threshold, his eyes straining to adjust to the gloom. He didn’t reach for the light switch. His instincts, honed by years of managing crises and navigating unpredictable environments, instantly flared.

”Stan, it’s Daniel,” he called out again, projecting his voice down the long hallway toward the study. He expected to hear the familiar, energetic, raspy voice echo back, telling him to come in and pour a drink.

Nothing.

Dead silence answered him.

Daniel walked deeper into the foyer, his grip tightening around the neck of the scotch bottle.

The house wasn’t just quiet; it felt empty. The kind of empty that raises the hair on the back of your neck. A heavy, creeping feeling of foreboding suddenly enveloped him, thick and cold. His heart violently sank into his stomach, a sudden spike of pure dread shooting straight through his chest.

He stopped at the edge of the hallway, staring into the oppressive darkness of the villa, the silence screaming at him that something was terribly, terribly wrong.
