The Maker: Hollywood

The heavy, tinted window of the black Escalade rolled down just an inch, letting the muffled, chaotic roar of Hollywood Boulevard bleed into the quiet leather interior of the SUV.

Daniel leaned forward, looking out the crack in the glass. The street was completely shut down. Searchlights swept across the clear night sky, and the massive marquee of the El Capitan Theatre was glowing violently with neon lights, spelling out the title of the movie in massive, imposing letters: THOR.

”It’s loud,” Florence noted from the seat next to him, reaching over to adjust the cuff of his suit.

”It’s a Marvel premiere,” Margot said from the other side, checking her own reflection in her phone screen. ”It’s supposed to be loud.”

Daniel took a slow breath. He wasn’t nervous. Hadn’t been in a while. There was no financial gamble here, no lingering anxiety about whether the studio was going to survive the weekend. He had enough money in the bank to fund a small country, and Miller Studios was an impenetrable, self-funded fortress. Releasing Thor wasn’t a roll of the dice; it was just the next logical, necessary step in the progression of the universe he was building.

But there was still a unique kind of anticipation. The general public already knew the movies were connected. The Miller Studios comics had been on the shelves for a while now, establishing the lore and the roster. But knowing about a guy with a magic hammer in a comic book, and actually seeing him brought to life in a live-action, big-budget blockbuster were two entirely different things.

The SUV rolled to a stop at the head of the red carpet. The door was pulled open by a security guard, and the wall of sound hit them like a physical wave.

Daniel stepped out of the car first.

The immediate, blinding flash of a hundred paparazzi cameras strobed across his face. He blinked through the harsh white light, turning back to offer a hand to Florence, and then to Margot, helping them both out of the SUV.

He buttoned the center button of his charcoal-grey Tom Ford suit.

That single, simple movement caused a ripple effect among the photographers standing behind the velvet ropes.

Daniel had always worn suits well. He was naturally tall and had a good frame. But the last three months of waking up at four-thirty in the morning to lift ungodly amounts of heavy iron with David Goggins had fundamentally changed his geometry. The bespoke wool of the Tom Ford jacket, which had been tailored to his old measurements, was currently fighting for its life. The fabric pulled tight, almost straining across the sheer width of his new chest and shoulders. The sleeves gripped his biceps, and his neck looked noticeably thicker. He didn’t look like the pale, exhausted director they were used to photographing. He looked massive.

”Daniel! Over here! Daniel, to your left!” the photographers screamed, the flashes accelerating into a blinding, continuous strobe.

Daniel just smiled, wrapping an arm loosely around Florence’s waist and resting his other hand on the small of Margot’s back as they walked down the carpet.

Halfway down the press line, standing in front of a massive prop replica of Mjolnir, was Jon Favreau.

Favreau looked completely in his element. He was laughing with a reporter, looking sharp in a dark suit. Daniel had handed him the keys to the Iron Man sequel, and then immediately handed him the director’s chair for Thor. Jon understood the tone of this universe better than anyone else working on the lot.

Jon saw Daniel approaching and politely excused himself from the interview, walking over with a wide grin.

”Look at you, boss,” Jon laughed, pulling Daniel into a quick, firm hug. He pulled back and patted Daniel’s shoulder, his eyebrows raising slightly at the dense muscle under the jacket. ”Jesus, Dan. You feel like a brick wall. What are they feeding you in Bel Air?”

”Chicken and suffering, Jon. Mostly suffering,” Daniel joked, adjusting his tie. ”You ready for this? The crowd is feral out here.”

”I’m ready,” Jon nodded, looking out at the fans screaming behind the barricades. ”The test screenings were solid, but you know how it is. It’s different when the real audience gets their hands on it. They know Tony Stark. They know the suit. Taking them from a billionaire in a metal suit to a literal Norse god on a rainbow bridge... it’s a big jump.”

”They’ve read the comics, Jon. They know the lore. They just need to believe the guy holding the hammer,” Daniel said, patting Jon on the shoulder. ”And from what I saw in the editing bay, Hemsworth absolutely nailed it. You directed a hell of a movie.”

”Thanks, man,” Jon smiled. ”Let’s go inside. I need popcorn.”

The inside of the El Capitan was packed to the rafters. The energy in the massive, ornate theater was completely different from a standard Hollywood premiere. It didn’t feel like a stuffy industry event; it felt like a rock concert.

Daniel sat in the VIP center row, flanked by Florence and Margot, with Tom sitting in the seat right in front of him.

The lights dimmed. The crowd cheered so loudly the floor literally vibrated.

As the movie played, Daniel didn’t watch the screen. He had already seen the final cut a dozen times in the quiet editing bays in Burbank. Instead, he watched the audience. He listened to the micro-reactions, the shifting in the seats, the sudden intakes of breath.

When Chris Hemsworth first appeared on screen as Thor, arrogant, brash, and grinning in the halls of Asgard, a massive, collective wave of approval washed over the theater. The audience didn’t care about how the franchise connected in that exact moment; they were completely captivated by the character. Hemsworth brought a raw, magnetic earnestness to the role that made the ridiculous red cape and the winged helmet feel entirely grounded and real.

And then there was Tom Hiddleston. Every time Loki spoke, the theater went dead silent. Hiddleston wasn’t playing a mustache-twirling cartoon villain. He was playing a broken, jealous, deeply tragic brother, and the audience ate up every single syllable.

When Thor finally summoned Mjolnir back to his hand in the mud of New Mexico, the lightning crashing down around him, the entire theater erupted into genuine, unironic cheering.

They bought it. They bought the magic, they bought the gods, and they bought the progression of the universe.

Two hours later, the credits rolled. The audience stayed glued to their seats. They knew the rules by now. Nobody left a Miller Studios movie before the lights came up.

The post-credits scene played, showing a brief, tantalizing glimpse of the Tesseract.

The theater lost its mind.

Daniel leaned back in his plush seat, a quiet, satisfied smile on his face. He felt Margot rest her head on his shoulder, her hand squeezing his knee.

”They loved it,” Margot whispered.

”Yeah,” Daniel nodded. ”They did.”

By Monday morning, the box office numbers were officially certified, and Thor was a global smash hit.

The internet discourse completely shifted. The conversation wasn’t just about whether the movie was good—it was universally agreed that it was great—but the focus narrowed intensely onto the character of Thor himself, and what his existence meant for the reality of the world Daniel had built.

Twitter was flooded with clips, fan art, and massive threads breaking down the Asgardian lore. People who had never picked up a comic book were suddenly acting like experts on Norse mythology.

But while the general audience was busy dissecting the intricacies of the Bifrost, a very specific, highly vocal corner of the internet was focused on something else entirely.

On The Miller’s Muses forum, the cosmic implications of Thor were completely ignored.

A user with the handle DirectorDanStan had posted a new thread.

The title was simple: I THINK WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE SUIT.

The body of the post contained two photographs placed side-by-side. The first photo was the blurry TMZ shot of Daniel from a few months ago, looking pale, exhausted, and thin as he was wheeled into the hospital on a gurney.

The second photo was a high-resolution, front-facing shot of Daniel standing on the red carpet at the Thor premiere from the night before.

The difference was staggering.

The forum completely, instantaneously melted down.

”EXCUSE ME?!” the top comment read, possessing over four thousand upvotes. ”WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR TIRED ARTSY BOY? WHY IS HE BUILT LIKE A LINEBACKER?”

”Look at the shoulders on that suit jacket. Look at the absolute tension on that center button. That button is fighting the hardest battle of its life right now,” another user pointed out.

”I am looking disrespectfully,” a third user chimed in. ”Florence and Margot were holding onto him on that carpet like they knew exactly what they had. I’m sick.”

”Wait, didn’t he joke in an Instagram post that his trainer was David Goggins? I thought that was a bit! Did David Goggins actually turn Daniel Miller into a tank?”

The thirst posts, which had been respectfully suppressed out of genuine concern during his bout with pneumonia, returned with an absolute, unhinged vengeance. The users were analyzing the new width of his neck, the way the wool fabric pulled across his lats, and the way he carried himself with a completely new, grounded physical confidence. Within three hours, the thread had seventy pages of replies, entirely dedicated to losing their collective minds over the fact that the most brilliant director in Hollywood could now probably bench press most of his actors.

On Tuesday morning, the chaos of the internet felt very far away inside the heavily soundproofed, mahogany-lined boardroom on the top floor of the Burbank lot.

Daniel sat at the head of the long table. He was wearing a fitted black Henley, having abandoned suits the second the premiere was over.

Sitting to his right was Tom.

Elena and Marcus were sitting across from them, their laptops open, projecting massive spreadsheets onto the screen at the back of the room.

”The second-weekend drop for Thor is projected to be incredibly low,” Elena said, tapping her stylus against her screen. ”The word of mouth is carrying it. People love Hemsworth. And more importantly, the international markets are responding to the fantasy elements way better than we initially modeled.”

”It’s the hammer,” Tom said simply, leaning back in his leather chair and spinning a pen between his fingers. ”It’s a great visual. You don’t need to speak English to understand a guy hitting something really hard with a magic hammer.”

Daniel chuckled. ”He’s not wrong. Marcus, how’s the tracking for Spider-Man?”

”Through the roof,” Marcus answered, pulling up a new slide. ”The momentum from Thor is bleeding directly into the Spider-Man hype. The internet is already making the pivot. They loved seeing the gods, but now they want to see how the street-level kid from Queens fits into a world where guys like Thor exist. The contrast is exactly what they want.”

”We stick to the schedule,” Daniel said, lacing his fingers together on the table. ”We let Thor run its course through May and June, and we drop Peter Parker right in the middle of July. Own the summer.”

”Done,” Elena nodded.

Before Elena could bring up the marketing budget for the European press tour, the heavy oak door of the boardroom swung open.

David Goggins walked in.

He was wearing his usual dark workout gear, completely out of place in the corporate environment, and entirely unbothered by it. He didn’t knock. He didn’t excuse himself. He just walked straight up to the head of the table.

He was holding a massive, industrial-sized plastic Tupperware container.

Goggins dropped the container directly onto the polished mahogany right in front of Daniel. It landed with a heavy, wet thud. Inside was at least two pounds of boiled chicken breast and a mountain of plain, unseasoned white rice.

”Suit looked good on TV, Hollywood,” Goggins deadpans, his voice completely flat. ”But the cameras add ten pounds. Now eat your bird. Leg day in three hours. We are doing Bulgarian split squats until you puke.”

Daniel stared at the Tupperware container. He let out a long, heavy sigh.

”David, I am in the middle of a board meeting,” Daniel pointed out gently.

”And your muscles are in the middle of a catabolic state,” Goggins shot back without missing a beat. ”Eat the bird.”

Goggins turned around and walked right back out of the room, letting the heavy door click shut behind him.

Tom let out a loud snort, trying and failing to cover his laugh with his hand. Elena just looked down at her keyboard, fighting a smile.

”I hate him,” Daniel muttered, popping the plastic lid off the container. The smell of plain, joyless chicken wafted into the air. ”I really, really hate him.”

”Hey, the Muses forum thinks you look great,” Tom teased, spinning his pen. ”I read the thread this morning. They are very impressed with your lats.”

”Shut up, Tom,” Daniel groaned, stabbing a piece of dry chicken with a plastic fork. ”Let’s move on to the merchandise rollout for Queens.”

An hour later, the meeting was adjourned. Tom, Elena, and Marcus filed out of the room to execute their respective tasks, leaving Daniel alone in the quiet boardroom.

Daniel sat at the table, mechanically chewing his way through the mountain of rice.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket and scrolled through his contacts. He tapped Florence’s name and put the phone to his ear.

She picked up on the second ring.

”Are you done doing business things?” Florence’s voice was bright and clear over the line.

”For the moment,” Daniel said, swallowing a dry piece of chicken. ”I’m currently eating my state-mandated protein ration.”

”Poor baby,” she teased. ”When are you coming home?”

”In a few hours. I have to go to David’s gym and let him torture my legs first,” Daniel said. He paused, looking around the empty room to make absolutely sure the door was closed. He leaned forward slightly, dropping his voice. ”Hey. Flo. I actually need your help with something.”

”Okay,” Florence said, her tone shifting slightly, picking up on the sudden seriousness in his voice. ”What is it? Did the studio catch on fire?”

”Why do you guys always say that? The studio is fine,” Daniel smiled softly. He stared at the wood grain of the table. ”I need you to clear your schedule tomorrow afternoon. We need to go for a drive. Just you and me.”

”A drive?” Florence asked, confused. ”To where?”

”To the jeweler,” Daniel said quietly.

There was a dead, stunned silence on the other end of the phone.

A few months ago, Daniel had proposed to Florence. It had been perfect, quiet, and deeply personal. And Margot had been the one to help him pick out the ring, swearing herself to absolute secrecy, helping him navigate Florence’s exact tastes so he got it exactly right.

”Daniel...” Florence breathed out, the realization hitting her instantly. Her voice suddenly spiked three octaves, a breathless, vibrating squeal of pure excitement slipping through the speaker. ”Oh my god. Are you serious?”

”Yeah,” Daniel smiled, a warm, heavy feeling settling in his chest. ”It’s Margot’s turn.”

”Oh my god! Oh my god, yes!” Florence was practically bouncing off the phone, her voice thick with immediate, overwhelming joy. ”Daniel, yes! I know exactly what she wants! I have a Pinterest board! I’ve had a Pinterest board for months!”

Daniel laughed, leaning back in his chair. ”I should have known you had a dossier prepared. Tomorrow at two? We’ll take the quiet car, keep a low profile.”

”I will be ready at one,” Florence promised fiercely. ”Don’t you dare look at any rings without me. I love you.”

”I love you too. See you tonight,” Daniel said.

He hung up the phone and set it on the table.

He looked at the Tupperware container, stabbed another piece of chicken, and ate it. He had a universe to run, a body to build, and a ring to buy. Life was incredibly, absurdly good.
