The Maker: Hollywood

The heavy, reinforced doors of Stage 12 shut with a dull, echoing thud, sealing them in completely.

This soundstage sat at the absolute far edge of the Valley lot, far away from the main thoroughfares and the commissary. There were no golf carts driving past, no extras wandering around looking for coffee. Elena had locked the perimeter down tight.

Inside, the lighting was deliberately moody and stark, casting long, dramatic shadows across the minimal set pieces.

Stephen Walker was pacing. He was fully suited up in the red and blue Spider-Man gear, though he held the mask balled up in his right hand. He kept wiping his sweaty palms on his thighs, taking deep breaths, trying to manually force his heart rate to slow down. He looked like a kid about to take a final exam he hadn’t studied for.

Daniel sat comfortably in his canvas chair behind the solitary monitor. He had a small, highly vetted crew on the floor—just Bob Elswit adjusting the camera aperture and a couple of grips standing quietly by the massive light diffusers.

”Stephen, you’re wearing a hole in the floor,” Daniel called out softly, amused by the kid’s nervous energy. ”Just breathe. It’s a thirty-second scene.”

”I know, I know,” Stephen muttered, stopping his pacing and running a hand through his messy hair. ”It’s just... you know. It’s him.”

Right on cue, a side door near the back of the stage opened.

Samuel L. Jackson walked onto the floor.

He didn’t need to try to look intimidating. He was wearing the long, black leather trench coat and the eyepatch, carrying the exact same quiet, commanding swagger he had brought to the end of Iron Man. He walked past the lighting rigs, giving Bob a casual nod, and stepped up to the edge of the set.

”Mr. Jackson,” Stephen practically squeaked, taking a step forward.

”Relax, kid,” Sam said, his voice a low, smooth rumble. He offered a small, knowing smirk. ”Just hit your marks and don’t trip over the cape. Wait, you don’t have a cape. You’ll be fine.”

Daniel laughed. ”Alright, let’s get this done. Bob, we’re doing the slow push-in on Sam. Stephen, you turn around right when he says the word ’universe.’ Don’t anticipate it.”

”Got it,” Stephen nodded frantically, stepping onto his taped mark on the floor.

”Rolling,” Bob said, his eye glued to the viewfinder.

”Action,” Daniel said.

Stephen was facing the back wall, his shoulders slumped in the suit, conveying that bone-deep exhaustion Peter Parker was feeling at the end of the movie.

From the shadows behind him, Sam stepped forward. The overhead light caught the leather of his coat and the matte black of the eyepatch.

”You think you’re the only superhero in the world?” Sam’s voice echoed in the quiet soundstage, dripping with that effortless authority. ”Mr. Parker, you’ve become part of a bigger universe. You just don’t know it yet.”

Stephen turned around, exactly on the cue. His reaction wasn’t just acting; it was the genuine, star-struck awe of a young actor realizing he was officially standing in the major leagues. His jaw parted slightly, his eyes wide, completely selling the reality that Peter Parker had just realized he wasn’t alone out there.

”Cut. Print that,” Daniel said immediately. ”That was perfect. We don’t even need a second take.”

Sam broke character, clapping his hands together once. ”Easy money. Good working with you, kid.”

He gave Stephen a brief, firm handshake, gave Daniel a wave, and walked right back out the side door, leaving Stephen standing there looking like he had just been hit by lightning.

Daniel stood up from his chair. He walked to the center of the floor, looking around at Bob, the grips, and Stephen.

”Alright guys,” Daniel said, his voice carrying clearly. ”That is an official, complete wrap on Spider-Man.”

The small crew clapped and cheered. Stephen let out a loud whoop, finally relaxing, a massive grin breaking across his face. Daniel went over and gave the kid a proper hug, congratulating him on carrying his first massive blockbuster.

An hour later, Daniel was walking across the Burbank lot, carrying a heavy, shock-proof Pelican case. It contained the absolute final, encrypted hard drives of the raw footage.

Normally, the wrap of a movie meant a massive cast party and a month-long vacation to a beach somewhere where cell service didn’t exist. Daniel desperately wanted to sit on a beach and do absolutely nothing for three weeks. But he didn’t have the time. The timeline of the cinematic universe was a moving train, and he was laying the tracks right in front of it. The vacation would have to wait until after the premiere.

He walked into the post-production building and headed straight for the sound mixing stages.

He pushed the heavy, padded door open and walked in. Benny was sitting at the massive mixing console, surrounded by a dozen screens and a wall of audio sliders.

”Don’t tell me you broke another microphone,” Benny grunted without turning around, his hands moving over the sliders like a concert pianist.

”I brought you the final drives, Benny,” Daniel said, hauling the Pelican case onto a side table and popping the heavy latches open. ”Everything is in there. The alleyway stuff, the Vulture car ride, and the black-site scene we just shot. Get your team on it.”

Benny finally spun his chair around. He looked at the hard drives, then looked up at Daniel.

”We’ll start pulling the selects tomorrow morning,” Benny said. ”I already got the rough cuts of the Washington Monument sequence from the VFX vendors. The sound design on the advanced tech is a bitch, but we’re getting it.”

”Just make it sound heavy,” Daniel told him. ”I don’t want it sounding like a laser pointer. It needs to sound like it could tear a building in half. I’ll be in tomorrow to sit with the editing team.”

”Sure,” Benny nodded, already turning back to his console.

Daniel left the post-production building and walked across the lot toward the Captain America production offices.

He walked into Joe Johnston’s office. The massive corkboard that used to be covered in headshots was now replaced with concept art of 1940s Brooklyn, Hydra tanks, and costume designs.

Joe was sitting behind his desk, looking over a highly color-coded shooting schedule. He looked up when Daniel walked in.

Joe didn’t say hello. He just stared at Daniel’s arms, then looked at his chest, his eyes narrowing in mild panic.

”We have a problem,” Joe said bluntly.

Daniel pulled up a chair and sat down, casually crossing his legs. ”What kind of problem? Did the location scouts strike out on the UK training camp?”

”No, the UK is fine,” Joe said, standing up and walking around his desk. He pointed an accusatory finger at Daniel. ”You are the problem.”

”Me?” Daniel frowned.

”Daniel, you’ve been working out with that maniac for what, a month?” Joe asked.

”Yeah. Goggins has me lifting heavy right now,” Daniel said, shrugging.

”It shows,” Joe said, running a hand over his face. ”You’re packing on mass way too fast. I just got off the phone with the visual effects supervisors. They need to digitally shrink your body for the first act of the movie when you’re playing pre-serum Steve Rogers. If your shoulders get any wider, or your chest gets any thicker, the CGI mapping is going to look like a distorted funhouse mirror. We won’t be able to shrink you convincingly.”

Daniel looked down at his own arms. He hadn’t really thought about the VFX implications of his morning workouts. He just liked feeling healthy and strong.

”Okay,” Daniel said. ”So what’s the fix?”

”The fix is we rip the schedule to shreds,” Joe said, walking over to the board and pulling down a handful of colored strips. ”We accelerate. We start principal photography on Monday. We are shooting every single scene of Skinny Steve—Brooklyn, the alleyway fight, the recruitment center, and the basic training camp—right now. Before you get any bigger.”

”Monday?” Daniel raised an eyebrow. ”That’s in four days.”

”Then you better memorize your lines this weekend,” Joe said deadpan.

Monday morning came fast.

Daniel stood in the middle of a massive green-screen volume on Stage 7. He looked absolutely ridiculous. He wasn’t wearing a 1940s period costume. He was wearing a skin-tight, grey motion-capture suit completely covered in small, reflective ping-pong balls. There was a lightweight rig strapped to his head with a small camera pointing directly at his face to capture his micro-expressions.

A stand-in actor, a naturally skinny, frail-looking guy, was standing just off-camera. They would shoot the scene twice—once with Daniel for the performance, and once with the stand-in for the physical lighting references, which the VFX team would seamlessly stitch together later.

Joe was sitting in the director’s chair.

”Alright, Daniel,” Joe called out over the stage speaker. ”This is the alleyway. You just got your ass kicked by the guy in the theater. You’re picking up the trash can lid. You don’t have the muscle to fight him, but you don’t know how to stay down. Make me believe it.”

Daniel nodded. He took a slow breath and closed his eyes.

When he opened them, the commanding, confident aura of the billionaire studio head was completely gone.

”Rolling!”

”Action.”

Daniel physically shrank himself. He hunched his broad shoulders forward, caving his chest in to make himself look smaller, less imposing. He altered the way he held his weight, making his legs look unsteady and weak.

He reached down and picked up a prop trash can lid. He held it up like a makeshift shield, his hands trembling slightly.

”You just don’t know when to give up, do you?” the stuntman opposite him sneered.

Daniel looked up. His eyes were wide, defiant, but incredibly vulnerable. He remembered the feeling of being in the hospital a few months ago, the absolute physical frailty of not being able to draw a full breath. He pulled that memory to the surface, adding a very subtle, wet wheeze to his breathing.

”I can do this all day,” Daniel said. His voice wasn’t deep or booming. It cracked slightly. It was the voice of a kid who was terrified, completely outmatched, but fueled by a raw, unshakeable sincerity.

Behind the monitors, Joe Johnston let out a quiet breath. He was completely blown away.

Joe had seen Daniel direct. He knew the guy was a genius behind the camera. And he knew Daniel was good in Joker. But this was different. Daniel wasn’t just reciting lines; he was completely embodying the fragile, earnest soul of Steve Rogers. The tracking dots and the ridiculous grey suit completely vanished. Joe was just watching Captain America before the shield.

”Cut,” Joe said softly. ”That was... yeah. That was perfect. We’re moving on.”

They shot at a frantic pace for the next two weeks. They ripped through the recruitment center dialogue, the conversations with Bucky, and the brutal physical comedy of the basic training camp where Daniel had to pretend to be exhausted by jumping jacks he could now do in his sleep.

Finally, late on a Friday afternoon, they wrapped the scene where Skinny Steve jumps on the dummy grenade to save his squad.

Daniel pulled the heavy camera rig off his head, wiping a layer of sweat off his forehead.

Joe walked onto the floor, clapping his hands.

”That’s it. That’s the last pre-serum shot,” Joe announced to the crew. He turned to Daniel. ”You are officially banished from my set, Daniel.”

”Banished?” Daniel asked, handing the helmet to a prop tech.

”You have a three-month break from principal photography,” Joe told him seriously. ”We are going to the UK to shoot the Hydra factory interiors and the Red Skull sequences without you. Your only job for the next ninety days is to go home, eat everything in sight, and come back to this lot looking like a literal super soldier.”

Standing near the craft services table—which he was currently inspecting for unauthorized sugary snacks—David Goggins heard the mandate.

Goggins turned around. He looked at Daniel, and a slow, truly terrifying smile spread across his face.

”Did you hear that, Hollywood?” Goggins called out, tossing an apple in the air and catching it. ”The rehabilitation phase is officially over. The hypertrophy phase begins tomorrow. I’m going to break you in half.”

Daniel looked at Goggins, then looked at Joe. ”Can I just stay here and direct the second unit?”

”Nope. Get out,” Joe laughed.

The next three months were a blur of extreme physical discipline and obsessive creative focus. Daniel basically lived two separate lives.

At 4:30 AM every single morning, his alarm would go off. The workouts with Goggins shifted from mobility and endurance to brutal, heavy iron. They spent hours in the Bel Air gym doing deadlifts, heavy bench presses, weighted pull-ups, and agonizing isolation movements. The private chef prepared massive Tupperware containers of chicken breast, sweet potatoes, and steamed broccoli, and Daniel ate until his jaw was tired.

By 9:00 AM, his muscles screaming and completely pumped, Daniel would drive to Burbank.

He spent his days in the dark editing bays with Benny and the post-production team. They scrubbed through the Spider-Man footage frame by frame. Daniel meticulously guided the color grading, ensuring the Vulture’s lair felt grimy and industrial, while Peter’s high school scenes felt bright and grounded. They spent weeks perfecting the sound mix for the third-act beach fight, making sure the mechanical roar of the Vulture’s wings sounded genuinely terrifying against the crashing waves.

In between editing sessions, Daniel sat in the corporate boardroom with Elena.

There were no massive meetings with shareholders to argue about marketing budgets. It was just the two of them, sitting at the mahogany table with a calendar, mapping the future of the empire.

”Thor is locked for a May release,” Elena said, tapping her pen on the desk. ”The test screenings were through the roof. The audience loves Hemsworth, and Hiddleston is stealing every scene. It’s going to be massive.”

”Good,” Daniel nodded, drinking from a gallon jug of water. ”We ride right behind it. We don’t wait six months. We hit them while the cinematic universe is fresh in their minds. We slot Spider-Man for the prime July summer blockbuster weekend. Let Thor introduce the gods, and then two months later, we bring them right back down to the streets of Queens.”

”I’ll lock in the dates with the international distributors,” Elena agreed, writing it down. ”And I’ll prep the marketing rollout.”

By the end of the third month, everything culminated at once.

Daniel sat in the screening room with Benny, watching the absolute final, locked cut of Spider-Man.

As the credits rolled, Daniel felt a deep, profound sense of satisfaction. It was a masterpiece. It was funny, it was incredibly emotional, and it felt entirely grounded in reality. Stephen and Sadie were electric, and Michael Keaton was terrifying. The movie was bulletproof.

”Print it, Benny,” Daniel said in the dark room. ”It’s done.”

He drove back to Bel Air that evening. The sun was setting, casting a warm orange glow over the city.

He parked the car and walked into the house. He was exhausted, but it was a good kind of exhaustion. He took off his jacket, tossing it over a chair in the foyer. The physical transformation over the last ninety days was staggering. His chest was thick and broad, his arms stretched the sleeves of his t-shirt to their absolute limit, and his back had a distinct, heavy V-taper. He didn’t just look healthy anymore; he looked like he could walk through a brick wall.

”Hey,” a soft voice called out from the kitchen.

Daniel walked in. Florence was leaning against the marble kitchen island, holding a glass of white wine. She was wearing a silk robe tied loosely at her waist, her hair falling over her shoulders.

She stopped mid-sip, her eyes trailing slowly over Daniel as he walked into the warm lighting of the kitchen. She had seen the progression every day, but seeing him freshly back from the studio, the tight t-shirt clinging to his chest, the sheer mass of his new build was still arresting.

”Rough day at the office?” Florence asked, her voice dropping into a low, teasing register.

”Locked the final cut of Spider-Man,” Daniel said, walking over to the fridge to grab a bottle of water. He leaned against the counter next to her, cracking the plastic cap. ”It’s done. I don’t have to look at it again until the premiere.”

Florence turned to face him, leaning into his space. She reached a hand out, tracing her fingernails lightly down the thick muscle of his bicep, feeling the dense tension under the fabric.

”You know,” Florence murmured, looking up at him through her lashes, a wicked, flirtatious smile playing on her lips. ”The internet still thinks you’re just a cute, slightly tired, artsy director who survived pneumonia. You haven’t posted a full-body picture since this whole Goggins routine started.”

Daniel chuckled, taking a drink of water. ”I’m not exactly posting gym selfies kinda guy, Flo.”

”I know you aren’t,” she stepped closer, pressing herself lightly against his chest. She tilted her head, her eyes practically sparkling with mischief. ”But when you finally have to do the press tour for this movie, and you walk out on a stage looking like... this? The Muses forum is going to absolutely self-combust. They are going to lose their minds. It’s going to be a national emergency.”

Daniel laughed, a deep rumble in his chest. ”Let Marcus handle the PR crisis.”

”Mhm,” Florence hummed, her hands sliding up to grip the collar of his t-shirt. She tugged him down slightly, her voice dropping to a whisper against his jaw. ”Marcus can handle the internet. I’m going to handle you. Come upstairs. You owe me for not complaining about the sound of David Goggins yelling at you at five in the morning.”

Daniel didn’t argue. He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her flush against him, and let her lead him out of the kitchen and up the wide staircase to the master bedroom.

The next morning, Daniel woke up feeling better than he had in years.

He walked downstairs, wearing sweatpants and a tank top, heading for the kitchen to grab his pre-workout sludge.

He stopped in the living room.

Sitting in the middle of the floor, right on the expensive rug, was a heavy, industrial wooden crate. It hadn’t been there last night. It had thick iron hinges and a large shipping manifest stapled to the top, stamped with the Captain America production department logo.

Daniel walked over to it. There was a crowbar resting on top of the lid.

He picked up the heavy iron bar, wedged it under the lip of the wooden crate, and pulled sharply. The nails shrieked as the wood splintered and the lid popped off.

Daniel set the crowbar down and pulled the lid away.

Inside the crate, resting securely in a bed of thick, custom-cut black foam, was the shield.

It wasn’t a cheap plastic prop. It was heavy, perfectly balanced, and polished to an absolute mirror finish. The red, white, and blue bands gleamed in the morning sunlight streaming through the windows, centering around the perfect silver star.

Daniel reached down, slipping his fingers through the heavy leather straps on the back of the shield. He lifted it out of the foam.

It had genuine weight to it. It felt real.

He slid it onto his left forearm, adjusting the straps until it sat perfectly against his arm.

He walked over to the large glass doors that led to the home gym, catching his reflection in the glass.

He stood there for a long time, just looking at himself. The broad shoulders, the thick chest, the quiet intensity in his eyes, and the iconic vibranium shield resting on his arm.
