The Maker: Hollywood

It was exactly 5:44 AM.

Daniel was already awake. He was lying flat on his back in the massive Bel Air master bedroom, staring at the dark ceiling, waiting for the inevitable. The lingering soreness in his abs from yesterday’s hollow holds was a dull, constant throb, but it was nothing compared to the mounting psychological dread.

The digital clock on his nightstand clicked to 5:45 AM.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

The heavy oak door rattled in its frame.

”Sun’s up, Hollywood! Let’s get to work!” Goggins’ voice easily penetrated the thick wood.

”Coming,” Daniel groaned, throwing the duvet off. He didn’t even bother trying to negotiate for five more minutes. He knew it was entirely pointless. He threw on a pair of black gym shorts and a ratty grey t-shirt, sliding his feet into a pair of running shoes.

He opened the door. Goggins was standing in the hallway, wearing his usual dark workout gear. But today, the intensely intimidating former SEAL was holding something completely ridiculous. It was a cheap, crinkly plastic shopping bag from a dollar store.

”Morning,” Daniel rasped, rubbing his eyes. ”What’s in the bag?”

”Your nightmare,” Goggins said completely deadpan. He turned and started walking down the hall toward the gym stairs.

Daniel followed him, his curiosity overriding his exhaustion. They walked into the pristine, glass-walled home gym. Goggins walked right to the center of the room, opened the cheap plastic bag, and dumped the contents onto the black rubber mat.

A hundred brightly colored, uninflated party balloons—neon pink, bright yellow, and baby blue—spilled out onto the floor.

Daniel stared at them. He looked back at Goggins. ”Dude. What is this? Is it your birthday?”

”No,” Goggins said, kicking a pink balloon toward Daniel’s foot. ”It’s pulmonary rehab.”

Daniel blinked. ”Excuse me?”

”You had severe pneumonia, man,” Goggins explained, crossing his arms over his chest. ”Your lungs were filled with fluid. The tissue gets tight. The capacity shrinks. You want to get back on a movie set and yell action without passing out? We have to stretch the lungs back out. And the best way to force maximum lung expansion is blowing up cheap, thick rubber balloons.”

”Okay,” Daniel said slowly. ”I mean, that actually makes medical sense. I just sit here and blow them up?”

”Sit?” Goggins let out a sharp, genuine laugh. ”Who said anything about sitting on a bench? Get your back against that wall. Drop into a wall-sit. Hips parallel to the floor.”

Daniel sighed. He walked over to the mirrored wall, pressed his back flat against the glass, and slid down until his legs formed a brutal ninety-degree angle. His quads immediately engaged, a dull burn starting in the muscles almost instantly.

Goggins walked over, scooped up a handful of the deflated balloons, and dropped them directly into Daniel’s lap.

”The drill is simple,” Goggins said, standing right over him. ”You hold the sit. You grab a balloon. You take the deepest breath your damaged lungs can handle, and you blow that balloon up until it is completely full. You tie it off, you drop it, and you grab the next one. We don’t stop until your lap is empty.”

Daniel grabbed a yellow balloon. He stretched the rubber, put it to his lips, and inhaled deeply. The tight, pulling sensation in his lower chest immediately flared up. He forced the air out, pushing it into the balloon. It barely inflated to the size of a grapefruit.

”Bigger!” Goggins barked. ”You’re giving me twenty percent! Empty the tank! Push!”

Daniel took another breath, fighting through the discomfort, and blew harder. The balloon expanded. He tied it off, his fingers fumbling slightly as his thighs began to violently shake against the wall. He dropped the yellow balloon onto the floor and grabbed a pink one.

”That’s one,” Goggins said, pacing in front of him. ”Nineteen to go.”

By the fifth balloon, Daniel was sweating profusely. His legs were vibrating. His lungs felt like they were on fire, a deep, burning ache that made his vision swim. He tried to blow into a blue balloon, but his breath hitched, and the air sputtered back out with a pathetic squeak.

”Don’t stop!” Goggins yelled, kneeling down so they were at eye level. ”A piece of pink rubber is taking your soul right now! A dollar-store party favor is kicking your ass! Don’t let it win! Breathe!”

”You’re a psychopath,” Daniel wheezed, taking another massive breath and forcing the air into the balloon. He tied it off and dropped it into the growing pile of festive, brightly colored spheres around his shaking legs.

He grabbed the next one. He was in absolute agony. The juxtaposition of the brutal physical torture and the ridiculous aesthetic of the party balloons was completely absurd.

”Hey,” Daniel panted, his voice strained as he paused for half a second before inflating balloon number eight. ”Do you... do you do children’s birthday parties too?”

Goggins didn’t even crack a smile. ”I do. But the kids usually cry. Less talking, more blowing.”

For the next twenty minutes, it was pure, unadulterated suffering. Daniel fought through the burning in his chest and the screaming pain in his quads. Every time he wanted to stand up, Goggins was right there, demanding another rep. By the time he tied off the twentieth balloon and let it drop to the floor, Daniel literally collapsed sideways, sliding off the glass wall and landing hard on the rubber mat.

He lay there on his side, gasping for air, surrounded by a sea of neon party balloons.

”Time,” Goggins said calmly, stepping over a yellow balloon to grab his water bottle.

Daniel just lay there, trying to catch his breath. His chest was heaving, but just like yesterday, once the immediate pain subsided, he realized he could actually breathe deeper. The tight, restrictive feeling at the bottom of his ribs had loosened up significantly.

Goggins walked over to the mini-fridge and pulled out the shaker bottle filled with that horrific, dark green sludge. He walked back over and held it out.

Daniel sat up slowly, his legs feeling like jelly. He took the bottle.

The drill sergeant persona instantly switched off. Goggins sat down cross-legged on the floor right in the middle of the balloons, looking completely relaxed.

”Your capacity is better than yesterday,” Goggins noted conversationally. ”The crackle in your breathing is almost gone.”

”Yeah,” Daniel croaked, unscrewing the lid of the shaker. ”It feels better. Hurts like a bitch, but it feels better.”

Daniel took a sip of the green liquid, forcing himself not to gag. He looked at Goggins. They had been working together for three days now, and Daniel had realized that Goggins was actually a pretty reasonable guy once the timer stopped.

Daniel cleared his throat. He had been holding onto a question since the first day they met, and he finally had the courage to ask it.

”David, man, I gotta ask you something,” Daniel said, looking down at his shaker bottle.

”Shoot,” Goggins said.

”The other day,” Daniel started, pointing vaguely toward the ceiling. ”When you raided my pantry. You threw a massive box of Cheez-Its into a black garbage bag.”

”I threw a lot of garbage into a garbage bag,” Goggins corrected.

”Right. But those Cheez-Its,” Daniel said, looking him dead in the eye. ”Did you actually throw them in the outside dumpster? Or are they hiding somewhere in this house? Because I am currently having severe withdrawals from artificial cheddar flavor, and I will pay you cash for them.”

Goggins actually laughed. A genuine, deep laugh that echoed in the gym.

”I took that trash bag straight to the curb, brother,” Goggins said, shaking his head. ”They’re gone. The garbage truck took them yesterday morning. You’re going to have to survive on spinach and kale.”

Daniel let out a long, dramatic sigh, slumping his shoulders. ”I hate you.”

”I know,” Goggins smiled. ”Drink your sludge.

Thirty miles away, in the corporate heart of Burbank, Elena was holding court.

The executive boardroom on the top floor of Miller Studios was heavily air-conditioned, but half the executives sitting around the massive mahogany table were sweating.

Elena sat at the head of the table. She was wearing a sharp, tailored black suit, her hair pulled back into a tight bun. She was scrolling through an iPad, completely unbothered by the heavy silence in the room.

The speakerphone in the center of the table was currently projecting the voice of a very panicked, very loud British man. He was the head of the largest theater chain conglomerate in Europe, acting as their primary regional distribution partner.

”Elena, you have to understand our position,” the British voice pleaded, echoing slightly. ”The trades are saying Daniel is in a coma. The theater networks in London are getting incredibly jumpy. They are talking about reallocating their prime holiday screens to a different studio if Spider-Man is going to miss its release date. We need a formal contingency plan in writing, or we may have to look at holding back the promotional rollout.”

The executives in the room looked at Elena nervously. This was thousands of screens across Europe at stake.

Elena didn’t look up from her iPad. She tapped the screen once, highlighted a cell on a spreadsheet, and then leaned toward the speakerphone.

”Richard,” Elena said, her voice perfectly calm, cutting through his panic like a scalpel. ”Let me stop you right there.”

The line went quiet.

”Daniel had a severe case of pneumonia. He was in the hospital, he has been discharged, and he is currently recovering at home,” Elena stated firmly. ”The trades are writing fiction because we haven’t given them a quote. That’s our strategy, not a crisis.”

This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

”But the production schedule—” Richard started to say.

”The production never stopped for a single hour,” Elena cut him off smoothly. ”While your theater networks were busy reading gossip blogs, Stage 4 banked all of the B-roll, the stunt coverage, and the second-unit inserts. And as of yesterday morning, Tom has officially taken the chair to direct the primary dialogue scenes. You know Tom. He co-directed the entire second unit of Star Wars. He knows Daniel’s visual language better than anyone.”

Elena leaned back in her chair, folding her hands together. ”So, let me be very clear about our position, Richard. Miller Studios is one hundred percent self-funded. We don’t have a board of directors, we don’t have outside financiers, and we don’t need your permission to keep rolling cameras. If your network wants to pull their promotional rollout, that’s fine. We have the cash reserves to self-fund the European marketing push entirely and buy out independent screens. But if you pull out now, you lose your premium distribution cut on the back end of what is projected to be a billion-dollar movie. We take the screens, we take the profit. It’s your call.”

There was a long, heavy silence on the speakerphone. The executives in the Burbank boardroom held their collective breath.

”There’s no need for that, Elena,” Richard’s voice came back, sounding significantly more subdued and polite. ”We are fully committed to the project. We just needed... reassurance.”

”Consider yourself reassured,” Elena said crisply. ”I’ll send you the reports from yesterday. Have a good evening, Richard.”

She reached out and pressed the end-call button.

She looked up at the room full of studio executives. ”Are there any other imaginary crises we need to address today, or can we get back to actually running the studio?”

Nobody said a word. They just flipped their folders open and started taking notes. Elena was running the empire exactly the way Daniel had taught her: with absolute, unshakeable confidence.

Over in the San Fernando Valley, the atmosphere on Stage 4 was significantly less corporate, but just as efficient.

The heavy, soundproof doors were closed. The massive lighting grids suspended from the ceiling were casting a moody, dim glow over the alleyway set.

Tom was standing behind the director’s monitors. He wasn’t Daniel, and he wasn’t trying to be. He didn’t have Daniel’s intimidating, quiet intensity. Tom was practical, efficient, and incredibly good at executing the blueprint Daniel had left behind.

Bob Elswit was standing next to the main camera, looking through the viewfinder, adjusting the focus ring.

”Lighting looks good, Bob,” Tom called out. ”Dante, the trash bags look a little too clean near the dumpster. Can we get some grime on them?”

A prop guy rushed in with a spray bottle of fake dirty water and aggressively misted the fake garbage bags.

Stephen Walker was standing in the middle of the set, wearing the homemade Spider-Man suit. He had the ski mask pulled up over his nose, holding the fabric in his hand. He looked frustrated.

”Hey, Tom?” Stephen called out, stepping out of his mark. ”Can I ask a character question?”

”Shoot, Steph,” Tom said, stepping away from the monitors and walking up to the edge of the set.

”It’s just this transition scene,” Stephen said, looking down at his script pages. ”I drop into the alley, I take the mask off, and I’m supposed to let out this big sigh before I put my street clothes on. But I’m having trouble finding the motivation. Like, what kind of sigh is it? Is it a sigh of relief because I survived the fight? Or is it a sigh of exhaustion because the suit is heavy? I feel like I’m just breathing out loudly for no reason.”

Tom scratched the back of his neck, thinking about it. He was a great technical director, but getting into the deep emotional weeds of the character’s headspace was usually Daniel’s territory.

Before Tom could answer, Bob Elswit popped his head up from behind the camera. The grizzled veteran cinematographer adjusted his glasses and looked at Stephen.

”I just shoot the shadows, kid,” Bob said, his voice gravelly and completely deadpan. ”I don’t know what kind of sigh it is. Think about a dead dog or a bad breakup or something. Just hit your mark, look at the brick wall, let the air out of your lungs, and let’s get the take before we lose the backlight.”

Stephen blinked, completely taken aback by the bluntness. He looked at Tom.

Tom just shrugged, fighting a smile. ”He’s not wrong, Steph. Don’t overthink it. You just got thrown through a wall by a guy with metal wings. You’re tired. Just be tired. Let’s run it.”

”Right. Dead dog. Got it,” Stephen muttered, pulling his mask back down and stepping back to his starting mark.

”Settle down, everyone,” Tom called out, walking back to the monitors. ”Rolling.”

They shot the scene. Stephen dropped into the alley, ripped the mask off, leaned against the damp brick wall, and let out a heavy, exhausted sigh that conveyed a perfect mix of relief and bone-deep fatigue.

”Cut,” Tom said, hitting the spacebar on the keyboard to save the clip. ”That’s the one. Print it. Good job, Steph.”

Tom grabbed his notebook. The process was working seamlessly. He was directing the performances, Bob was handling the visuals, and at the end of the day, Tom compiled the best takes into a secure digital file and sent them directly to Daniel’s iPad for final approval.

Back in Bel Air, the reality of Daniel’s absence was having a very different effect on the internet.

It had been six full days since the blurry TMZ photo of Daniel on a hospital gurney had broken the internet. Six days of complete, absolute silence from Daniel’s personal accounts. Marcus had issued the one holding statement about pneumonia, and then Miller Studios had completely locked down. No leaks, no updates, no paparazzi photos.

Nature abhors a vacuum, and the internet abhors silence.

Florence and Margot were sitting at the massive kitchen island, eating a pair of incredibly healthy chicken salads that Elena had delivered via a private chef service—since Goggins had effectively nuked the pantry.

Florence was scrolling through an iPad, a deep frown settling on her face.

”They’re losing their minds, Margot,” Florence said, tapping the screen. ”I mean, they are completely spiraling.”

”Who?” Margot asked, stabbing a cherry tomato with her fork.

”The Muses,” Florence said, turning the iPad around so Margot could see the screen. ”The forum has officially crossed the threshold from genuine concern to pure, unhinged conspiracy theories.”

Margot squinted at the screen. The top pinned thread on The Miller’s Muses forum had over ten thousand replies. The title of the thread was in all caps: THE COVER-UP: IS ELENA RUNNING THE STUDIO USING DEEPFAKES?

”Are you kidding me?” Margot asked, her jaw dropping slightly.

”I wish I was,” Florence said, pulling the iPad back and scrolling through the comments. ”Because Miller Studios is completely locked down, they think the studio is hiding something massive. This girl wrote a forty-page manifesto claiming that Daniel actually died in the ambulance, and Elena is using artificial intelligence to fake his voice on studio conference calls to keep the international distributors from panicking.”

”That is the darkest thing I have ever heard,” Margot muttered, pushing her salad away.

”It gets weirder,” Florence sighed. ”There’s an entire splinter faction in the comments who think he isn’t dead, but that his lungs were too damaged, so the studio had him cryogenically frozen in a secret subterranean bunker under the Burbank lot until they can find a cure.”

”Under the Burbank lot?” Margot laughed in disbelief. ”They don’t even have the zoning permits to build a cafeteria expansion in Burbank, let alone a cryogenic freezing chamber.”

”We know that,” Florence said, standing up and grabbing the iPad. ”But they don’t. We need to do an intervention. If he doesn’t post a proof of life picture today, these people are going to form a militia, grab pitchforks, and storm the Valley soundstages looking for answers.”

They walked out of the kitchen and down the hallway to Daniel’s home office.

Daniel was sitting at his desk. He was wearing a comfortable sweater, looking much healthier than he had a few days ago. The color had returned to his face, and he was currently reviewing the dailies Tom had sent over from the Spider-Man set.

Florence walked in and placed the iPad directly over his keyboard, obscuring the video footage.

”Hey,” Daniel said, looking up in protest. ”I was watching Stephen nail a transition shot.”

”Stephen is fine. Your fans are not,” Florence said firmly. ”Daniel, you have to post an update on your socials. Right now. Today.”

Daniel frowned, leaning back in his chair. ”Marcus already put out a statement. Everyone knows I had pneumonia. I don’t want to post some produced, PR-approved essay about my health journey. It feels fake.”

”I’m not asking for an essay,” Florence said, pointing at the iPad screen. ”I’m asking you to stop a riot. Read the top thread.”

Daniel leaned forward, squinting at the forum post. He read the title about Elena using deepfakes, and then his eyes skimmed down to the paragraph about him being cryogenically frozen under the Burbank lot.

He stared at the screen for a long five seconds. He slowly looked up at Margot and Florence.

”Are they serious?” Daniel asked, genuinely bewildered.

”They have mobilized a search party on Reddit, Dan,” Margot said completely deadpan. ”They are tracking private flight logs out of LAX trying to see if you were flown to a secret clinic in Switzerland. You need to post a picture, or I swear to god, Elena is going to have to hire armed guards for the studio gates.”

Daniel let out a long, raspy laugh, rubbing his face. ”Okay. Fine. I’ll post a proof of life. But I’m not putting a suit on for it.”

”Just take a selfie,” Florence instructed, stepping back. ”Make it look casual.”

Daniel picked up his cell phone. He opened his camera app and flipped it to the front-facing lens. He didn’t try to look perfect. His hair was messy, he was wearing a plain sweater, and he still had faint shadows under his eyes.

He reached over and grabbed his shaker bottle, which was still half-full of the terrifying green sludge Goggins had made him. He held it up slightly in the frame.

He looked at the screen to frame the shot.

Behind him, through the open door of the home office, the hallway was visible. Just as Daniel was about to snap the picture, David Goggins walked past the doorway, carrying a towel.

Goggins saw Daniel taking a selfie. He stopped directly in the doorframe behind him. He didn’t smile. He just stared dead into the camera lens and aggressively pointed a thick, menacing finger directly at Daniel’s head, looking like a drill sergeant about to ruin someone’s life.

Daniel saw it on the screen, smirked, and snapped the picture.

”Perfect,” Daniel said, opening Twitter and Instagram.

”What are you writing?” Margot asked, leaning over his shoulder.

”Keeping it simple,” Daniel said, his thumbs flying across the digital keyboard.

He typed out the caption.

Pneumonia didn’t get me, but the guy Elena hired to train me might. Thank you guys for the $4 Million raised for the Medical Foundation. You are completely incredible and I don’t deserve you. I am recovering well and I’ll be back on the Spider-Man set next week. Also, please stop making cryogenic freezing rumors. Burbank definitely doesn’t have the zoning permits for that.

He attached the photo and hit send on both platforms simultaneously.

”Done,” Daniel said, tossing the phone onto the desk.

”Thank god,” Florence sighed. ”Crisis averted.”

They didn’t even have to wait five minutes.

The internet instantly, violently combusted.

For six days, millions of people had been holding their collective breath, waiting for any sign of life from the director who had shaped their entire pop-culture landscape. When the notification pushed through to their phones, the relief was instantaneous and deafening.

On The Miller’s Muses forum, the cryogenic conspiracy threads were instantly locked by the moderators. The entire site flipped from a digital funeral into a massive, chaotic party in a matter of seconds.

”HE IS ALIVE AND HE HAS MESSY HAIR!” one user posted in all caps.

”He literally read the cryogenic freezing thread, oh my god, we are so embarrassing,” another replied.

But immediately after the initial wave of profound relief washed over the internet, the collective attention of millions of people shifted to the actual photograph Daniel had posted. They zoomed in past Daniel’s tired smile. They looked at the background. They looked at the terrifying, bald man in the hallway aggressively pointing at the camera.

The fitness circles on Twitter were the first to recognize him.

A prominent fitness influencer quote-tweeted the photo.

”Wait. Hold on. Is that David Goggins in the background?! DID DANIEL MILLER HIRE DAVID GOGGINS TO REHAB HIS LUNGS?!”

The realization spread like wildfire. The timeline instantly filled with absolute chaos and hilarious memes. The idea of the brilliant, wealthy, highly sophisticated Hollywood director getting screamed at by the internet’s most notoriously intense ex-SEAL was too good to pass up.

”Daniel is going to show up to the Spider-Man premiere carrying a massive wooden log,” a user tweeted, getting fifty thousand likes in ten minutes.

”Goggins probably looked at the Iron Man script and told Daniel it was soft because Tony Stark used a suit instead of just running fast,” another joked.

”Imagine surviving a 104 fever just to wake up and see David Goggins standing at the foot of your bed. I would simply go back into the coma.”

Sitting in his home office, Daniel watched the screen of his cell phone light up. The notifications were coming in so fast that the digital counter couldn’t keep up. The phone vibrated continuously, a solid, unrelenting hum against the wood of the desk, before the screen finally glitched and the entire operating system simply froze under the sheer volume of engagement.

Daniel just smiled. He reached over, picked up the shaker bottle, and took a drink of the terrible green sludge. It tasted like dirt, but he didn’t care.

The internet was happy, the conspiracy theories were dead, and his studio was running like a well-oiled machine. His lungs felt clearer than they had in months, and the crushing pressure of carrying the entire world on his own shoulders was finally gone.

He leaned back in his chair and looked out the window. He was ready to go back to work.
