The Maker: Hollywood

The drive through the San Fernando Valley felt entirely different this morning.

For the past few years, Daniel’s morning commute had been a high-speed, anxiety-fueled blur. He would usually be running late, aggressively sipping a massive, scalding cup of black coffee from a styrofoam cup, going over a dozen different production problems in his head before he even parked his car. He used to treat the traffic on the 101 as a personal insult to his schedule.

Today, he was driving exactly the speed limit. The windows of the Range Rover were rolled down just enough to let the cool morning air circulate. He wasn’t drinking coffee. He was drinking a violently green, thick sludge out of a plastic shaker bottle that David Goggins had aggressively handed him at six-thirty this morning after making him do fifty agonizingly slow lunges.

Daniel took a sip of the sludge, grimaced at the taste of raw kale and spirulina, and turned the steering wheel to pull through the main security gates of the Miller Studios Valley lot.

He flashed his badge to the guard, parked his car in his designated spot, and walked toward Stage 4. He wasn’t rushing. He just walked at a normal, steady pace, breathing in the familiar smells of hot asphalt and ozone.

He pulled the heavy soundproof door open and stepped onto the massive soundstage.

The low hum of the air conditioning units and the chatter of the crew echoed in the cavernous space. The art department was busy adjusting a massive set that had been built to look like a high school gymnasium bleacher section. Lighting technicians were on the scaffolding overhead, angling massive silk diffusers.

”Boss on the floor!” one of the assistant directors called out.

The entire soundstage went quiet for about three seconds. Heads turned. People stopped what they were doing.

Daniel just stood there, holding his green shaker bottle, wearing a comfortable pair of jeans and a casual button-down shirt. He looked around, suddenly feeling very conscious of the silence.

”I didn’t die, guys. You can keep working,” Daniel called out, his voice clear and steady.

A ripple of relieved laughter washed over the crew, and the ambient noise of the set immediately returned. Daniel started walking toward the video village.

It took him exactly thirty seconds to realize that things were going to be weird today.

A young production assistant named Kevin, who usually sprinted around the set carrying walkie-talkies and clipboards, practically dove into Daniel’s path.

”Hey, Dan! Glad you’re back,” Kevin said, his eyes wide and overly attentive. He reached out his hands. ”Do you want me to carry your script binder for you? Or your drink? I can take that.”

Daniel looked down at his own hands. The script binder weighed maybe two pounds.

”Kevin, I had pneumonia, I didn’t break both my arms,” Daniel said dryly. ”I can carry the binder.”

”Right. Sorry. Just let me know if you need to sit down,” Kevin stammered, backing away quickly.

Daniel shook his head and kept walking. He reached his canvas director’s chair behind the dual monitors. He was just about to sit down when a burly grip named Dave walked over carrying a portable, industrial-sized space heater.

Dave completely ignored Daniel. He just set the heavy orange heater down about three feet away from Daniel’s chair, plugged it into a heavy-duty extension cord, and clicked it to the highest setting. A blast of dry, roasting air hit Daniel’s shins.

”Dave, it’s seventy-two degrees in here,” Daniel pointed out.

”Just making sure you don’t catch a chill, boss,” Dave said without looking up, double-checking the plug. ”Can’t have you catching a draft.”

Daniel let out a long, slow exhale. He found it incredibly annoying that everyone was treating him like a fragile piece of spun glass, but at the same time, it was genuinely touching. These people actually gave a shit about him.

”Thanks, Dave,” Daniel said, taking a seat and moving his legs slightly away from the blast furnace.

Tom and Bob Elswit noticed he was seated and walked over from the camera cart. They both looked incredibly relieved to see him sitting in the chair instead of in a hospital bed.

”Look who it is,” Bob said, adjusting his glasses. ”You’re looking human again, Dan. Not so pale.”

”I feel human,” Daniel said, setting his script binder down on the small table next to the monitors. ”Thanks for holding the fort down while I was gone. The dailies you guys sent over looked fantastic.”

”Tom handled the actors, I just pointed the lens,” Bob deflected modestly.

Tom crossed his arms, looking at Daniel with a serious, evaluating expression. ”So, how are you actually doing? Lungs holding up? Are you really ready to be back on a twelve-hour set?”

Daniel leaned back in his chair and took a sip of the terrible green sludge, swallowing it with a grimace before looking at Tom.

”Honestly, Tom, the pneumonia was a breeze,” Daniel said, completely deadpan. ”But I have a bald man showing up at my house at five in the morning every single day screaming at me about carrying imaginary boats and taking souls. So medically, my lungs are at one hundred percent. But my soul has been completely destroyed.”

Tom stared at him for a second before bursting into laughter. Bob chuckled, shaking his head.

”I saw that picture you posted,” Tom laughed, wiping his eye. ”Dude, Elena actually hired David Goggins? I thought that was a joke.”

”It’s not a joke. The man made me blow up twenty party balloons while doing a wall-sit yesterday,” Daniel sighed. ”If I cough, he makes me do a plank. But it’s working. Let’s shoot a movie before he finds me here.”

”Alright,” Tom smiled, stepping back into professional mode. ”We’re set up for scene twenty-four. The bleachers. Stephen and Sadie are out of hair and makeup and waiting in the wings.”

”Let’s bring them in,” Daniel said.

A few minutes later, Stephen Walker and Sadie Sink walked onto the set. Stephen was wearing an oversized, slightly faded high school science t-shirt and jeans, looking perfectly awkward. Sadie was in character the second she stepped onto the floor. She was wearing dark, comfortable clothes, her hair slightly messy, carrying a battered paperback copy of a classic sci-fi novel.

Stephen saw Daniel sitting in the chair and immediately brightened up, but Daniel just held up a hand.

”We’ll do the homecoming hugs later, Steph. Get on your mark,” Daniel called out gently. ”Sadie, you’re on the third row of the bleachers.”

Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website.

Sadie walked up the wooden steps of the fake bleachers and sat down. She opened her book and slumped forward slightly, perfectly capturing MJ’s defensive, observant, I-don’t-care-about-anything posture.

”Alright,” Daniel said into his headset. ”This is a quiet one. Let the silence hang. Action.”

Stephen walked into the frame, nervously clutching the strap of his backpack. He looked up at Sadie.

”Hey,” Stephen said, his voice cracking just a fraction.

Sadie didn’t look up from her book immediately. She let a full two seconds pass. Then, she slowly shifted her eyes upward, giving him a flat, completely unimpressed look.

”You look terrible,” Sadie said, her delivery so naturally deadpan it was almost surgical. ”Like, objectively. You look like you slept in a dumpster.”

Stephen stumbled backward a half-step, completely thrown off balance. ”I didn’t. I mean, I sleep in a bed. I’ve just been... busy. With the Stark internship.”

”Right. The internship,” Sadie said, slowly turning a page of her book, her eyes dropping back down to the text. ”The one that requires you to disappear in the middle of fifth-period chemistry and come back smelling like ozone and garbage water. Very prestigious.”

”It is,” Stephen said, practically tripping over his own words to defend his secret identity. ”It’s a very hands-on program.”

Daniel watched the monitors, completely relaxed. He wasn’t furiously scribbling notes in his binder. He wasn’t leaning forward, itching to jump in and correct an inflection.

The dynamic between them was incredible. Sadie wasn’t playing the traditional, overly sweet love interest. She was playing MJ exactly how Daniel had written and imagined her: incredibly smart, highly observant, and hiding her actual feelings behind a thick wall of sarcasm. She was casually dominating the conversation without even raising her voice, and Stephen was naturally leaning into Peter’s frantic, stuttering awkwardness.

”Cut,” Daniel said quietly.

Stephen let out a breath, relaxing his posture. Sadie closed her book, keeping a finger between the pages.

”That was great,” Daniel told them over the stage speakers. ”The chemistry is perfect. Sadie, your delivery is completely dialed in. Stephen, just one thing on the pacing. When she mentions you smelling like garbage, don’t rush the defense. Let the panic set in for a second before you talk. Give me one beat of silence where Peter realizes she actually pays attention to how he smells. Let’s run it again.”

They ran the scene three more times. Daniel barely said a word. He just let them act, trusting the casting process and the organic talent in the room. He didn’t need to micromanage every single syllable to get a good performance.

Around two in the afternoon, they moved off the bleacher set and started setting up for a transition shot involving a piece of salvaged technology.

Dante Ferretti and his art department crew wheeled a heavy, prop metal casing onto the floor. It was supposed to be a leftover piece of experimental military tech—a massive, heavy-industrial turbine casing that the Vulture’s crew had hijacked from a government transport to reverse-engineer for their weapons.

Bob Elswit set the camera up for a tight insert shot. He looked through the monitor and frowned.

”Dan, the prop is too hot,” Bob called out. ”The overhead lights are catching the gloss finish. It’s blinding the lens.”

Daniel stood up and walked over to the prop. He looked at the jagged metal casing. The paint job was beautiful, highly detailed with exposed wiring and thick steel plating, but the clear coat on top was way too shiny. It didn’t look like dirty, hijacked junk sitting in a chop shop; it looked like a brand-new toy fresh out of a plastic blister pack.

Previously, Daniel would have instantly tensed up. He would have felt his heart rate spike. He would have grabbed a walkie-talkie, demanded a prop master bring him a specific can of dulling spray and a rag, and he would have physically crouched on the floor to paint the prop himself, worrying the entire time that the delay would cost his team more time. Even if he handed it to Dante, he would have stood directly over Dante’s shoulder, watching him spray it, unable to let the anxiety go until it was perfect.

But Daniel just looked at the shiny metal, took a breath, and turned around.

”Dante,” Daniel called out casually.

The legendary production designer walked over, holding a clipboard. ”Yes, boss?”

”The gloss is bouncing straight into the lens,” Daniel said, pointing at the prop. ”It needs to look grittier. Can you guys kill the shine on that?”

”Give me two minutes,” Dante said with a dismissive wave of his hand. He whistled loudly, signaling two of his art department guys who immediately ran over with a matte sealing spray and a handful of dirt dusters.

Daniel didn’t stand there and watch them do it. He didn’t offer suggestions. He just turned his back, walked back to his director’s chair, and sat down to review his notes for the next scene.

He left it entirely to the professionals.

Two minutes later, Bob gave a thumbs-up from the camera. The shine was gone, the prop looked incredibly realistic, and they rolled the camera. It was seamless. Daniel realized, with a profound sense of clarity, that trusting his highly competent team actually made the movie run smoother, faster, and infinitely less stressful.

The afternoon progressed easily. There was no screaming, no frantic rushing, no frantic rewriting of scenes on the fly.

Daniel checked his watch. It was 5:58 PM.

They had finished the final setup on the call sheet. They had exactly what they needed.

In the past, this was the exact moment Daniel would have grabbed the megaphone, looked at the crew, and said, ”Alright, let’s reset for one more angle.” He would have pushed them for an extra safety shot, keeping the grips, the lighting guys, and the actors on the floor until eight or nine at night, squeezing every single drop of productivity out of the day until everyone was exhausted.

Daniel reached down and grabbed the megaphone off the side of his chair.

”Alright everybody, listen up,” Daniel’s voice echoed across the massive soundstage.

The crew paused, instinctively bracing themselves for the inevitable order to keep working. The grips rested their hands on their tools.

”We got the pages done. That’s a wrap for the day,” Daniel announced. ”Go home. Have dinner with your families. See you tomorrow at eight.”

A stunned silence fell over the stage for a fraction of a second before a genuine, loud cheer erupted from the lighting grids all the way down to the camera carts. The crew was thrilled. Getting out exactly on time on a massive studio blockbuster was practically unheard of.

Daniel smiled, packing his script binder and his empty shaker bottle into his leather messenger bag. He stood up and slung the bag over his shoulder.

As he was walking toward the heavy exit doors, Stephen jogged up behind him, still halfway in his costume with his hoodie pulled down.

”Hey, Dan, hold up,” Stephen called out.

Daniel stopped and turned around. ”What’s up, Steph?”

Stephen didn’t say anything. He just closed the distance and wrapped his arms around Daniel in a tight, massive, completely genuine hug.

Daniel froze for a split second, surprised by the sudden physical contact, before relaxing. He brought his hand up and patted Stephen firmly on the back. He understood exactly where this was coming from. Daniel hadn’t just cast Stephen in a movie; he had pulled a kid out of a bedroom, handed him the keys to the most popular superhero on the planet, and permanently altered the trajectory of his entire life. Stephen was terrifyingly close to losing the guy who gave him everything.

”It’s really good to have you back in the chair, man,” Stephen said, his voice a little thick, pulling back from the hug. ”We were really worried about you.”

”I’m fine, kid. I promise. I’m not going anywhere,” Daniel reassured him, offering a warm smile. Then, the corner of his mouth twitched upward into a dry smirk. ”But alright, enough hugging. I prefer this part to be with my women.”

Stephen let out a loud, sudden snort of laughter, completely breaking the emotional tension. He wiped a hand over his face, grinning. ”Yeah, yeah, okay. Got it. Go home, boss.”

”Get some sleep, Stephen. We’ve got a heavy dialogue day tomorrow,” Daniel said, turning and pushing the soundproof doors open.

He walked out into the warm evening air of the San Fernando Valley.

The parking lot was already starting to empty out. Daniel unlocked his Range Rover, tossed his bag onto the passenger seat, and got behind the wheel.

He started the engine. He didn’t feel the usual bone-deep, soul-crushing fatigue that usually accompanied the end of a shoot day. He wasn’t heading to a dark, windowless editing bay in Burbank to spend the next four hours staring at a computer screen.

He put the car in drive and pulled out of the lot.

He was going home to Bel Air. He was going to eat a clean, healthy dinner that didn’t come out of a craft services wrapper. He was going to spend a quiet evening with Margot and Florence, and he was going to go to sleep at a reasonable hour so he was fully rested and ready to survive whatever brutal, balloon-related torture David Goggins had planned for him in the morning.

Daniel drove onto the freeway, watching the sunset paint the Los Angeles sky in streaks of orange and purple. He rolled the window down, taking a deep, full breath of air, feeling the expansion in his lungs.
