THE FORGOTTEN LADY'S LITTLE FARM

Chapter 83: Chapter Eighty-One: Where the First Map Was Drawn

The compass pointed downward.

Not north.

Not south.

Not toward any of the familiar directions Lin Yue had spent years learning to navigate.

Downward.

Straight through the floor of the ancient chamber.

Lin Yue turned the compass over in her palm.

The object was small enough to fit inside her hand. Its circular casing was made of a material resembling silver, yet it felt warmer than ordinary metal. Strange symbols surrounded the glass face, glowing faintly whenever she moved closer to the staircase.

Shen Rui stood beside her, watching the needle.

”How far down?”

Aster answered immediately.

”Unknown.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Of course.”

Lumi floated over her shoulder.

”Could we ask the compass?”

Lin Yue looked at the tiny magical creature.

”How?”

”Politely?”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Shen Rui laughed.

Lin Yue shook her head, although the corners of her mouth lifted.

”Fine. We shall try your scientific method.”

She held the compass up.

”Dear compass, would you kindly tell us how far underground our destination is?”

The needle trembled.

A thin golden line appeared across its face.

Words materialized beneath the glass.

DEPTH: INSUFFICIENTLY DEFINED.

Lin Yue stared.

Then she slowly lowered the compass.

”That is the most unhelpful answer I’ve ever received from a magical object.”

Lumi nodded sympathetically.

”It was polite, though.”

Shen Rui took Lin Yue’s hand.

”At least we know it understands us.”

”That might actually be worse.”

He smiled.

”Shall we go?”

Lin Yue looked at the staircase.

Beyond its lowest visible step lay darkness.

She tightened the straps of her backpack and checked her equipment.

Water.

Food.

First-aid kit.

Light source.

Cord.

Navigation tools.

Emergency supplies.

She checked the compass again.

Then the camera hanging from her neck.

Finally, she examined the entrance to the chamber.

”Before we go anywhere, we need a way back.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”Agreed.”

Together, they marked the route with small golden stones from the Heartline network. Aster recorded their position, while Lin Yue sketched the staircase and its surrounding passages in her field journal.

Only when she was satisfied did she turn toward the darkness.

”All right.”

She took a breath.

”Let’s find out where the first map was drawn.”

And together, the newlyweds descended.

The Woman Who Read the Land

The staircase seemed endless.

Its walls changed as they descended.

At first, the material resembled ordinary stone. Farther down, thin silver veins appeared within the rock. Eventually, the stone gave way to smooth black surfaces covered in intricate lines.

Lin Yue stopped every few dozen steps.

She checked the walls.

The floor.

The air.

The direction of the staircase.

Shen Rui waited patiently each time.

After the fifth stop, he finally asked, ”Are you looking for something specific?”

”Several things.”

”Such as?”

”Changes in temperature. Air movement. Moisture. Structural damage. Evidence that something lives down here.”

She pointed toward a narrow crack in the wall.

”And that.”

Shen Rui leaned closer.

”What is it?”

”Airflow.”

He held his hand near the crack.

A faint current brushed his fingers.

”You’re right.”

”If there’s airflow, there may be another chamber or passage beyond the wall.”

”Or a ventilation system.”

”Exactly.”

She smiled.

”You’re learning.”

He gave her a sideways glance.

”I have an excellent teacher.”

For a moment, Lin Yue forgot the darkness around them.

She remembered her previous life.

She remembered hiking with a heavy backpack, stopping on unfamiliar trails to examine a slope or inspect a strange pattern of vegetation. She remembered filming educational videos in which she explained how terrain influenced water movement, why certain plants grew together, and how weather could transform a safe route into a dangerous one.

She had never been the sort of adventurer who charged into the unknown simply because it looked exciting.

She wanted to understand the unknown.

That had always been the difference.

Her old viewers had sometimes complained that she spent too much time explaining things.

Just show us the adventure, Lin Yue!

She had laughed and replied, Understanding why something happens is part of the adventure.

Now, thousands of kilometers beneath an unfamiliar world, she found herself grateful for every hour she had spent studying.

She touched the camera hanging against her chest.

”I really should have made a video about this.”

Shen Rui glanced at her.

”What would you call it?”

She considered the question.

”How to Survive a Mysterious Underground Expedition When Your Compass Is Having an Identity Crisis.”

He burst out laughing.

Lumi nearly fell out of the air.

”Can I be in the video?”

”Only if you stop trying to eat unidentified glowing things.”

Lumi looked offended.

”That happened once!”

”Twice.”

”The second one was a medicinal fruit!”

”Which made your ears glow for six hours.”

”They were very pretty!”

Shen Rui laughed harder.

For several precious moments, the darkness felt less threatening.

Then the compass pulsed.

Its needle pointed toward a narrow opening at the bottom of the stairs.

The laughter faded.

Lin Yue adjusted her backpack.

”All right. Back to work.”

The River Beneath the Mountain

The passage opened into an enormous cavern.

Lin Yue stopped at the entrance.

A river flowed through the chamber.

Its surface reflected thousands of tiny lights embedded in the ceiling, creating the illusion of a star-filled sky beneath the earth.

Massive stone pillars rose from the water.

Some were natural formations.

Others were clearly artificial.

Bridges connected several platforms built along the cavern walls. Narrow channels carried water toward distant tunnels, while enormous wheels turned slowly beside structures that resembled old watermills.

Lin Yue stared.

”This isn’t just a cave.”

Shen Rui examined the nearest bridge.

”No. Someone built all this.”

Aster projected a scan.

”Preliminary analysis indicates a large underground settlement.”

”Population?” Lin Yue asked.

”Unknown.”

”Current inhabitants?”

”Unknown.”

”Structural stability?”

”Partially compromised.”

Lin Yue closed her eyes briefly.

”Three unknowns in a row. Wonderful.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”You wanted an adventure.”

”I wanted an adventure with a reasonable amount of information.”

”Perhaps the information is waiting for us.”

”That is precisely what worries me.”

She crouched near the riverbank.

The water was clear, but she resisted the temptation to touch it.

Instead, she examined the surrounding stone.

There were mineral deposits along the edges, suggesting that the water had flowed here for a very long time. Moss-like growths covered the damp surfaces. Small pale creatures moved between the rocks.

The ecosystem was unfamiliar, but it was not chaotic.

Water flowed in predictable channels.

Plants grew where moisture accumulated.

Animals gathered near the river.

The same basic principles still applied.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Different world. Familiar rules.”

Shen Rui crouched beside her.

”Does that mean we’re safe?”

”No.”

His smile widened.

”I thought so.”

”Familiar principles don’t guarantee familiar outcomes.”

She pointed toward the river.

”We can use the terrain to make informed decisions, but we still need to test our assumptions.”

She collected a small water sample in a sealed container and asked Aster to analyze it.

Then she examined the current from a safe distance.

”That water is moving faster than it appears.”

”Would you cross it?”

”Not without a compelling reason.”

”Good.”

Shen Rui looked toward the nearest bridge.

”Fortunately, someone built us a road.”

Lin Yue followed his gaze.

The bridge was narrow, but its foundations appeared intact.

She studied the structure for several minutes before nodding.

”We’ll cross one at a time.”

”You’re going first?”

”Yes.”

He frowned.

”Lin Yue—”

She squeezed his hand.

”I’ll inspect the bridge. You stay here until I know it’s stable.”

He looked as though he wanted to argue.

Then he nodded.

”Be careful.”

”I will.”

She stepped onto the bridge.

One step.

Then another.

She tested each section before transferring her full weight.

Halfway across, she stopped and examined the support beams.

The wood was not wood at all.

It was a dense, dark material resembling petrified timber.

There were no obvious cracks.

The central supports were anchored into the rock.

After reaching the opposite side, she gave Shen Rui a signal.

”Come across slowly. Stay near the center.”

He followed her instructions.

When he reached her, she offered him a hand.

He took it.

”How was the bridge?”

”Better than expected.”

”And the view?”

Lin Yue looked down at the glowing river.

”Magnificent.”

He leaned closer.

”Then perhaps we should appreciate it.”

She turned toward him.

Before she could answer, he gently brushed a strand of hair away from her cheek.

”We’ve been rushing from one crisis to another,” he said quietly. ”Even on our honeymoon.”

Her expression softened.

”You’re right.”

”We don’t have to stop exploring.”

He glanced at the cavern.

”But we can remember that we’re exploring it together.”

Lin Yue slipped her fingers between his.

”Together, then.”

They stood for a moment beneath the underground stars.

Then Lumi floated between them.

”Are we going to kiss, or are we going to investigate the enormous mysterious structure?”

Lin Yue’s face turned pink.

Shen Rui coughed.

”Lumi.”

”What?”

”Go investigate the enormous mysterious structure.”

”Gladly!”

The little creature darted away.

Lin Yue covered her face.

”I’m going to put her in a jar.”

Shen Rui laughed and kissed her forehead.

”After the expedition.”

The First Map

Beyond the bridge stood a circular building.

Its entrance was framed by two towering pillars.

At the center of each pillar was the same symbol Lin Yue had seen on the compass: two overlapping circles crossed by a single line.

But beneath that symbol was another mark.

A small tree.

Lin Yue approached cautiously.

”This must be it.”

Shen Rui looked at the building.

”The place where the first map was drawn?”

”Possibly.”

She examined the entrance.

There were no footprints in the dust.

No broken branches.

No signs of recent disturbance.

Yet the doors stood slightly open.

Lin Yue frowned.

”Something doesn’t fit.”

”What?”

”If nobody has been here recently, why is the entrance open?”

Shen Rui studied the doors.

”Perhaps it was never closed.”

”Perhaps.”

She took out her camera and photographed the entrance from several angles.

Then she recorded the symbols and their positions in her journal.

Only after completing her observations did she step inside.

The chamber was enormous.

A circular table occupied its center.

Above it floated a three-dimensional map of the Heartline World.

Mountains rose from the projection.

Rivers wound through forests.

Oceans shimmered beneath floating islands.

Every known settlement appeared as a tiny golden point.

But there were other points too.

Thousands of them.

Some were red.

Some were black.

Others flickered between colors.

Lin Yue slowly walked around the table.

”This map isn’t showing only geography.”

Aster responded.

”Correct.”

”It displays energy networks, settlement locations, and historical movement patterns.”

Lin Yue stared.

”So it’s a record of civilization.”

”More accurately, a record of civilizations.”

The projection expanded.

A timeline appeared beneath the map.

The earliest date was impossible to read.

The symbols were too old.

But one thing remained clear.

The first map had been created long before the current Heartline settlements existed.

Long before the Cartographer.

Perhaps even before the Golden Space.

Lin Yue’s heart beat faster.

”Who made this?”

A voice answered.

”I did.”

Everyone turned.

A figure stood at the far side of the chamber.

It was a woman.

Her clothing resembled the garments worn by ancient scholars, but its fabric shimmered like liquid silver. Her long hair floated gently around her shoulders despite the still air.

Her face was calm.

Her eyes were golden.

And she looked directly at Lin Yue.

”I have waited a very long time for you.”

Lin Yue did not approach.

Instead, she studied the woman’s outline, the light surrounding her, and the space between them.

”Are you the First Keeper?”

The woman smiled.

”That is one of the names I was given.”

”Are you alive?”

The smile faded slightly.

”That depends on what you mean by alive.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Why does everyone in this world answer questions like that?”

Shen Rui covered a smile with his hand.

The woman laughed softly.

”Because simple answers are not always truthful ones.”

Lin Yue folded her arms.

”Then let’s begin with something simple.”

She held up the compass.

”Why does this point toward me?”

The woman looked at the object.

”Because it recognizes the person who must complete the map.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Complete it?”

The woman gestured toward the projection.

”Look carefully.”

The Missing Places

Lin Yue approached the table.

At first, she saw only the same network of worlds.

Then she noticed something strange.

The map was incomplete.

Not because portions had been destroyed.

Because entire regions had never been recorded.

Vast areas lay beyond the mapped boundaries.

Some contained faint outlines of continents.

Others were entirely blank.

Lin Yue leaned closer.

”These aren’t unexplored territories.”

The woman nodded.

”Some were never discovered. Others were deliberately excluded.”

”By whom?”

”The Cartographer.”

Shen Rui stepped forward.

”Why would someone who maps worlds deliberately leave places unmapped?”

The First Keeper’s expression became solemn.

”Because a map can be used for more than navigation.”

Lin Yue felt a chill.

She remembered the hidden settlement.

The Cartographer had measured its resources, population, technology, and magical potential.

He had not merely wanted to know where people lived.

He had wanted to know what they could become.

The First Keeper continued.

”An accurate map gives its creator the ability to predict movement, locate resources, identify weaknesses, and influence the decisions of those who depend upon it.”

Lin Yue stared at the projection.

”So the map isn’t the weapon.”

”No.”

”The information is.”

The woman smiled.

”Now you understand.”

Shen Rui looked toward the black points.

”And the worlds that disappeared?”

”Some were destroyed. Some were sealed. Some remain beyond the Cartographer’s reach.”

”Can they be restored?”

The First Keeper was silent for a moment.

”Some can.”

Lin Yue’s eyes sharpened.

”How?”

”By finding them.”

She pointed toward the blank regions.

”By learning their histories.”

”By understanding why they disappeared.”

”And by restoring the connections that were severed.”

Lin Yue looked at the enormous map.

For the first time, the scale of their task became clear.

They were not simply searching for a lost settlement.

They were searching for lost worlds.

And to find them, she would need to do what she had always done best.

Observe.

Investigate.

Record.

Understand.

Then act.

The First Keeper’s Secret

Lin Yue turned toward the woman.

”Why me?”

The question emerged more quietly than she intended.

The First Keeper did not answer immediately.

Instead, she gestured toward the table.

A small image appeared.

A young woman stood on a mountain trail.

She wore a weatherproof jacket and carried a backpack.

A camera hung from her chest.

Lin Yue stopped breathing.

It was a recording from her previous life.

The First Keeper continued.

”I observed countless people across countless worlds.”

”Some possessed extraordinary magical abilities.”

”Some were brilliant inventors.”

”Others were born into powerful families or inherited immense resources.”

She looked directly at Lin Yue.

”But you were different.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”I was an ordinary person.”

”No.”

The First Keeper shook her head.

”You were a person who understood the value of not knowing.”

Lin Yue fell silent.

”You did not assume that unfamiliar plants were harmless because they were beautiful. You did not assume that clear water was safe because it looked clean. You did not assume that a mountain trail was passable because it appeared on a map.”

The woman smiled.

”You questioned your assumptions. You gathered evidence. You changed your conclusions when new information appeared.”

She touched the projection.

”And you taught others to do the same.”

Lin Yue looked at her old image.

She remembered the long hours spent researching a single subject before filming.

The mistakes she had corrected in later videos.

The viewers who had written to say her lessons had helped them prepare for difficult journeys.

She had never considered herself extraordinary.

She had simply loved learning.

The First Keeper’s voice softened.

”Magic can reveal possibilities, Lin Yue. But it cannot replace judgment.”

She pointed toward the map.

”The Cartographer believes that everything important can be measured, categorized, and controlled.”

Her eyes hardened.

”He has forgotten that understanding a world is not the same as owning it.”

Lin Yue slowly looked up.

”And you believe I can stop him?”

”I believe you can discover what he has failed to understand.”

”Which is?”

The First Keeper smiled.

”That the world is not merely a collection of resources.”

She looked toward Shen Rui.

”It is also a collection of relationships.”

The Map of Hearts

The projection changed.

The golden points representing settlements began connecting.

Not through roads.

Not through rivers.

Through lines of light.

Each line appeared when two communities shared something.

Knowledge.

Seeds.

Technology.

Stories.

Trade.

Trust.

Lin Yue watched as the network expanded.

The hidden settlements were not isolated because they lacked the ability to communicate.

They were isolated because they had been taught to fear one another.

The Cartographer had not needed to destroy every settlement.

He had only needed to prevent them from working together.

Lin Yue’s expression grew serious.

”He’s keeping them divided.”

The First Keeper nodded.

”Fear is an efficient barrier.”

Shen Rui looked at the projection.

”Then we reconnect them.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue considered the problem.

”Not by forcing them into one government.”

The First Keeper smiled.

”Continue.”

”Not by taking control of their resources.”

”Continue.”

”By establishing communication, exchanging knowledge, and helping them build relationships on their own terms.”

Lin Yue looked toward Shen Rui.

”We start with the settlements we can reach safely.”

He nodded.

”Then expand gradually.”

”Exactly.”

The First Keeper watched them with quiet approval.

”You understand more than you realize.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”I understand the first step.”

She looked at the map.

”The rest will require research.”

For the first time, the ancient woman laughed openly.

”Now I see why the network chose you.”

A Husband’s Promise

While Aster recorded the map, Lin Yue moved toward a quieter corner of the chamber.

Shen Rui followed.

She stood beside a window that overlooked the underground river.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Finally, he asked, ”Are you all right?”

Lin Yue nodded.

Then shook her head.

”I’m not sure.”

He waited.

She took a slow breath.

”I spent years learning how to survive in the wilderness.”

She looked down at her hands.

”I thought that was what I was good at. Understanding unfamiliar places. Making decisions when I didn’t have enough information. Teaching people how to avoid unnecessary risks.”

She gave a small, uncertain laugh.

”And now someone is telling me those ordinary skills may determine the fate of entire worlds.”

Shen Rui stepped closer.

”They were never ordinary.”

She looked at him.

”They were ordinary to me.”

”Perhaps.”

He took her hands.

”But you spent years learning them. You worked hard. You made mistakes, corrected them, and kept going.”

His thumb brushed gently over her knuckles.

”That is not ordinary, Lin Yue.”

Her eyes grew warm.

”What if I make the wrong decision?”

”Then we face the consequences together.”

”What if I cannot save everyone?”

His expression softened.

”You were never promised that you could.”

She lowered her gaze.

He gently lifted her chin.

”You don’t have to become someone who can save every world.”

He smiled.

”You only have to remain the woman who tries to understand the people living in them.”

Lin Yue stared at him.

Then she leaned forward and rested her forehead against his chest.

For a moment, she let herself stop thinking.

No maps.

No calculations.

No ancient prophecies.

Just Shen Rui.

Her husband.

Her companion.

The person who had chosen to stand beside her even when the road ahead was impossible to understand.

His arms closed around her.

”Remember something,” he murmured.

”What?”

”You are allowed to come home tired.”

She laughed softly against his chest.

”And what will you do when I do?”

”Feed you.”

”Anything else?”

”Listen to your complaints.”

”Even if I complain for three hours?”

”Four, if necessary.”

She looked up.

”And if I decide to abandon the entire expedition and spend a month growing vegetables?”

He smiled.

”I will help you plant them.”

Lin Yue’s heart felt lighter.

She kissed him.

It was a small kiss, gentle and unhurried.

When she pulled away, Shen Rui rested his forehead against hers.

”One more thing.”

”What?”

”When this adventure is over, I expect a proper honeymoon.”

She burst out laughing.

”Shen Rui!”

”What? I have been very patient.”

”You married a woman who grows farms in magical dimensions.”

”I was aware of that.”

”You married a woman who argues with goats.”

”I have heard the story.”

”And you married a woman who cannot walk past an interesting plant without examining it.”

He kissed her forehead.

”That last part was one of the reasons I fell in love with you.”

Lin Yue’s smile softened.

”Then I suppose you knew exactly what you were getting.”

”Not entirely.”

He squeezed her hands.

”But I look forward to finding out.”

The Warning Beneath the Map

A sudden chime interrupted them.

Aster’s projection flickered.

”Lin Yue. Shen Rui. The map has detected an external connection.”

Lin Yue immediately turned.

”From where?”

”Unknown.”

The First Keeper’s expression changed.

”That should not be possible.”

The map darkened.

One by one, the golden points disappeared.

The underground settlement vanished.

The floating islands vanished.

The Silent Continent vanished.

Until only a single red point remained.

At the edge of the map.

Lin Yue approached slowly.

”Is that the Cartographer?”

The First Keeper shook her head.

”No.”

”Then what is it?”

The ancient woman stared at the red point.

For the first time since their meeting, she looked afraid.

”Something older.”

The compass in Lin Yue’s hand grew hot.

The needle spun.

Once.

Twice.

Then it pointed toward the red point.

A voice emerged from the map.

It was neither male nor female.

It sounded like many voices speaking together from an immense distance.

”First Keeper.”

The woman stiffened.

The voice continued.

”You have opened the map.”

The First Keeper stepped in front of Lin Yue.

”Close the connection.”

Aster responded immediately.

”Unable to comply.”

The red point expanded.

Thin lines spread across the map.

They moved toward the center.

Toward the Heartline World.

Toward the settlement above them.

Toward the Golden Space.

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”Aster, isolate the network.”

”Attempting.”

”Shut down every connection that isn’t essential.”

”Attempting.”

”Do not activate anything we don’t understand.”

”Confirmed.”

The lines continued spreading.

The First Keeper turned toward Lin Yue.

”You must leave.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”Not without you.”

”There is no time.”

”Then explain quickly.”

The ancient woman looked at her.

”The Cartographer did not create the first map.”

Lin Yue’s heart sank.

”What?”

”He found it.”

The red point pulsed.

The entire chamber trembled.

The First Keeper continued.

”And what he found was not a record of the worlds.”

She swallowed.

”It was a record of everything that had ever existed.”

Lin Yue stared.

”Then the Cartographer—”

”Is only a servant.”

The map shattered into fragments of light.

A final message appeared.

ORIGINAL ARCHIVE ACCESS GRANTED. OBSERVER IDENTIFIED. LIN YUE. RETURN TO ORIGIN.

The chamber fell silent.

Then the voice spoke once more.

”We have found you at last.”

The compass cracked.

A brilliant golden light erupted from its center.

And somewhere far beyond the Heartline World—

something began drawing a new map.

A map with Lin Yue’s name at its center.

To be continued...
