Chapter 63: Chapter Sixty-One: The First Hunger

”I am sorry.”

Zhao E Lian’s words echoed through the darkness.

Lin Yue stood completely still.

Behind her, Shen Rui’s hand tightened around hers.

Lumi had stopped glowing.

Even the Golden Space seemed to hold its breath.

Lin Yue looked at Zhao E Lian.

”You created the Hunger?”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

”But not intentionally.”

Lin Yue took another step forward.

”Then tell me what happened.”

Zhao E Lian looked toward the darkness behind her.

”The truth is not pleasant.”

Lin Yue smiled faintly.

”I’ve survived mountain goats.”

Shen Rui coughed.

Lin Yue glanced at him.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

She turned back to Zhao E Lian.

”I can handle unpleasantness.”

Zhao E Lian smiled sadly.

”Perhaps.”

Then she stepped aside.

”Come.”

The Garden Before the Hunger

Beyond the doorway was a valley.

It was beautiful.

Almost impossibly beautiful.

Golden fields stretched toward distant mountains.

Rivers glittered beneath sunlight.

Forests covered the hills.

Fruit trees grew beside villages.

Children ran through gardens.

Farmers worked the fields.

Waterwheels turned.

Mills operated.

Smoke rose from distant workshops.

People traded.

Built.

Studied.

Laughed.

Lived.

Lin Yue stared.

”This was the old world?”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

”Before everything changed.”

”It looks prosperous.”

”It was.”

”What happened?”

Zhao E Lian looked toward the fields.

”We became very good at making things grow.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”That doesn’t sound like a problem.”

”It wasn’t.”

Zhao E Lian’s expression became sad.

”Until we forgot that growth has limits.”

The First Miracle

Zhao E Lian led them toward an enormous greenhouse.

Inside grew crops Lin Yue had never seen.

Rice that produced several times the normal yield.

Wheat resistant to drought.

Vegetables that grew rapidly.

Fruit trees that produced enormous harvests.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

”These are engineered crops.”

”Yes.”

”Selective breeding?”

”Eventually.”

”Magic?”

”Partly.”

Lin Yue looked at the plants.

”What happened?”

Zhao E Lian smiled bitterly.

”We solved hunger.”

Lin Yue stared.

”Completely?”

”For a time.”

The Golden Seed

Zhao E Lian showed her a small seed.

It was golden.

Almost identical to the seeds Lin Yue had encountered in the Golden Space.

”This was the first improvement.”

Lin Yue studied it.

”What did it do?”

”It grew quickly.”

”How quickly?”

”Three times faster than ordinary grain.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”And the yield?”

”Five times greater.”

She became quiet.

”That sounds wonderful.”

”It was.”

Zhao E Lian’s voice softened.

”For the first few years.”

The Hidden Cost

The problem wasn’t the seed.

It was what people did with it.

Farmers planted it everywhere.

Why wouldn’t they?

It produced more.

Faster.

With less labor.

Cities grew.

Population increased.

Food became cheaper.

Trade expanded.

More people moved to cities.

More land was cultivated.

More forests were cleared.

More water was diverted.

The golden grain spread.

Lin Yue slowly understood.

”The crop became too successful.”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

”Exactly.”

The Soil

The golden grain demanded nutrients.

Not unusual amounts.

But more than farmers realized.

At first—

the soil handled it.

Then harvest after harvest—

nutrients declined.

Farmers added more fertilizer.

The fertilizer increased production.

Which required more water.

More irrigation.

More fertilizer.

More machinery.

More energy.

The system became dependent on constant inputs.

Lin Yue whispered:

”Positive feedback.”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

”Exactly.”

The First Warning

Scientists noticed.

They warned the councils.

They measured declining soil organic matter.

Water tables fell.

Rivers became more polluted.

Biodiversity declined.

Pollinators disappeared.

Farmers became dependent on a small number of crops.

Lin Yue’s expression darkened.

”Monoculture.”

”Yes.”

”And nobody stopped?”

”They tried.”

”What happened?”

Zhao E Lian looked at her.

”People were afraid.”

”Of what?”

”Shortages.”

Lin Yue understood.

Once people had experienced abundance—

they feared returning to scarcity.

So they planted more.

The First Hunger

Then one year—

the rains failed.

Not completely.

Just enough.

Harvests declined.

Prices rose.

People panicked.

Farmers planted even more of the golden grain.

But the soil was already weakened.

The following year—

the harvest declined further.

Then came pests.

A pest that had evolved alongside the crop.

Because so much land contained the same plant—

the pest spread rapidly.

Lin Yue whispered:

”Lack of diversity.”

”Yes.”

The Great Shortage

Within months—

grain stores emptied.

Prices soared.

Cities panicked.

Governments restricted exports.

Merchants hoarded supplies.

Families bought everything they could.

Rumors spread.

People blamed farmers.

Farmers blamed merchants.

Merchants blamed officials.

Officials blamed the weather.

Everyone blamed someone.

Nobody blamed the system.

Lin Yue looked at Zhao E Lian.

”And that’s when the Hunger appeared.”

”Yes.”

Not a Monster

Lin Yue expected a monster.

Instead—

Zhao E Lian pointed toward the people.

”The Hunger was fear.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Fear?”

”Fear of not having enough.”

Zhao E Lian’s voice trembled.

”When people became afraid, they took more.”

More grain.

More land.

More water.

More fuel.

More resources.

More everything.

Every person thought:

If I don’t take it now, someone else will.

Lin Yue whispered:

”A tragedy of scarcity.”

”Yes.”

The First Hoarding

A family stored extra grain.

Then another.

Then a village.

Then a city.

People stopped trusting one another.

Markets became unstable.

Prices increased.

Poor families suffered first.

Then middle-class families.

Then wealthy families.

Eventually—

everyone was afraid.

The Hunger grew.

Not because it ate food.

Because it fed on fear.

The First Manifestation

Zhao E Lian led them into an old building.

Inside—

was a laboratory.

At its center stood a black crystal.

It pulsed.

Thump.

Lin Yue stared.

”This is it.”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

”The first manifestation.”

Lumi whispered:

”The Hunger Crystal.”

Lin Yue approached cautiously.

It was absorbing something.

Not energy.

Emotion.

Fear.

Anger.

Desperation.

Every pulse became stronger.

The Experiment

Lin Yue looked at Zhao E Lian.

”What did you do?”

Zhao E Lian closed her eyes.

”We tried to destroy it.”

”How?”

”We built a machine.”

She pointed toward a broken structure.

”It concentrated magical energy.”

”To destroy the crystal?”

”Yes.”

”And?”

Zhao E Lian looked at the floor.

”It worked.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”Then what’s the problem?”

”We destroyed the crystal.”

She looked toward the darkness.

”But not the Hunger.”

The Splitting

When the crystal shattered—

the Hunger divided.

One fragment entered the mountains.

Another entered the forests.

Another entered the rivers.

Another entered the cities.

Another entered people’s dreams.

Instead of one concentrated manifestation—

there were thousands.

Lin Yue’s face tightened.

”You spread it.”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

”We thought we had destroyed it.”

Lumi whispered:

”You made it worse.”

Zhao E Lian lowered her head.

”Yes.”

The Great Collapse

The Hunger changed.

It became more subtle.

It encouraged hoarding.

Distrust.

Overconsumption.

Short-term thinking.

Fear.

People stopped asking:

What do we need?

They asked:

What can we take?

Civilization began consuming its own foundations.

Forests disappeared.

Soils degraded.

Rivers became polluted.

Species vanished.

Cities expanded.

Then—

the climate shifted.

The systems couldn’t adapt.

Zhao E Lian whispered:

”And the world began to break.”

The Last Attempt

The Keepers tried everything.

They created seed vaults.

Water archives.

Forest sanctuaries.

Knowledge libraries.

Emergency settlements.

The Golden Space.

They wanted to preserve the possibility of recovery.

But they made one mistake.

They focused on saving resources.

Not rebuilding trust.

Lin Yue understood.

”People had to change too.”

”Yes.”

”You couldn’t preserve civilization without preserving cooperation.”

”Yes.”

The Golden Space

Zhao E Lian led Lin Yue to the original chamber.

The first Golden Space was tiny.

Almost empty.

A single patch of soil.

A single water source.

A single tree.

Lin Yue smiled.

”It looked exactly like mine.”

”Because it is the same.”

”The same?”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

”The Golden Space has never been duplicated.”

Lin Yue stared.

”Then...”

”You inherited the original.”

The First Keeper’s Mistake

Lin Yue looked at Zhao E Lian.

”You were the first Keeper.”

”Yes.”

”Why did you choose someone like me?”

Zhao E Lian smiled.

”I didn’t.”

Lin Yue froze.

”What?”

”The Golden Space chose you.”

Lumi nodded.

Lin Yue looked at her.

”You knew?”

”I suspected.”

”You really need to stop saying that.”

Lumi looked embarrassed.

Why Lin Yue?

Zhao E Lian explained.

The Golden Space had remained dormant for generations.

It waited for someone who understood the connection between:

Agriculture.

Water.

Soil.

Forests.

Economics.

Technology.

Community.

And human behavior.

Not someone who could simply grow crops.

Someone who understood systems.

Lin Yue laughed softly.

”That sounds like an enormous qualification list.”

Zhao E Lian smiled.

”You spent your life collecting it.”

The Books

Lin Yue remembered her previous life.

Her university education.

Her wilderness training.

The years of reading.

Books on ecology.

Agriculture.

Engineering.

Accounting.

Manufacturing.

Water treatment.

Sanitation.

Food preservation.

Survival.

Civilization.

History.

She had often wondered why she had become obsessed with learning so many unrelated things.

Now—

she understood.

They weren’t unrelated.

They were pieces of the same system.

The Golden Space’s Purpose

Zhao E Lian touched the World-Tree.

”The Golden Space doesn’t want you to recreate our civilization.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”It wants me to build a resilient one.”

”Yes.”

”One capable of surviving scarcity.”

”Yes.”

”One that doesn’t depend on endless consumption.”

”Yes.”

”One that teaches people instead of making them dependent on me.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”That’s a much bigger job.”

Zhao E Lian laughed.

”That’s why you have help.”

Shen Rui’s Role

Lin Yue glanced at Shen Rui.

”Why him?”

Zhao E Lian smiled.

”Because you cannot build everything alone.”

”I know that.”

”No.”

Zhao E Lian shook her head.

”You understand it intellectually.”

She looked at Shen Rui.

”But he understands it personally.”

Lin Yue became quiet.

Shen Rui looked uncomfortable.

”I don’t think I’m particularly special.”

Zhao E Lian laughed.

”Good.”

He looked surprised.

”Why is that good?”

”Because the people who believed they were special caused the most damage.”

Lin Yue laughed.

Shen Rui sighed.

”I walked into that one.”

The Second Principle

A new inscription appeared.

NEVER BUILD A WORLD THAT NEEDS A HERO.

Lin Yue stared.

Then added it to her notebook.

Underneath, she wrote:

BUILD PEOPLE WHO CAN BUILD.

Shen Rui nodded.

”That is better.”

The Hunger Awakens

The black crystal suddenly pulsed.

Thump.

Lin Yue turned.

The room darkened.

A whisper moved through the chamber.

MORE.

Lin Yue froze.

Another whisper.

MORE.

The crystal cracked.

MORE.

Lumi shouted:

”It’s waking!”

Zhao E Lian stepped backward.

”No.”

Lin Yue stared at the crystal.

”What does it want?”

Zhao E Lian answered:

”What it has always wanted.”

The crystal pulsed.

MORE.

Lin Yue understood.

”It doesn’t want food.”

”No.”

”Money.”

”No.”

”Land.”

”No.”

”Power.”

”No.”

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”It wants endless consumption.”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

The New Weapon

Lin Yue didn’t reach for a sword.

She reached for her notebook.

Shen Rui stared at her.

”What are you doing?”

”Thinking.”

”Now?”

”Especially now.”

She wrote:

THE HUNGER THRIVES WHEN RESOURCES ARE TREATED AS INFINITE.

Then:

COUNTERMEASURE: LIMITS. DIVERSITY. RESERVE. SHARING. EDUCATION. TRUST. ACCOUNTABILITY. RESTORATION.

Shen Rui smiled.

”You’re going to fight a magical monster with an agricultural plan.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”Do you have a better idea?”

He thought.

”No.”

”Then help me.”

”Gladly.”

The First Countermeasure

Lin Yue walked toward the crystal.

She didn’t attack it.

She spoke.

”You want more.”

The crystal pulsed.

MORE.

”You believe there will never be enough.”

MORE.

”But there can be enough.”

The crystal trembled.

Lin Yue continued.

”Not if everyone takes everything.”

”But if people build systems that regenerate resources—”

The crystal cracked.

”Then enough becomes possible.”

The darkness recoiled.

The Golden Space Responds

The World-Tree began glowing.

Branches extended.

Roots spread.

The Golden Space expanded.

But unlike previous expansions—

new resources did not appear.

Instead—

old damaged areas began recovering.

Barren soil regenerated.

Polluted water cleared.

Dead trees sprouted.

Abandoned terraces repaired themselves.

Not instantly.

Slowly.

Naturally.

Lin Yue smiled.

”The Golden Space is responding to restoration.”

Zhao E Lian nodded.

”Because restoration is the opposite of Hunger.”

The New Garden

A new garden appeared.

It wasn’t enormous.

It contained:

Compost beds.

Rainwater collection.

Mixed crops.

Fruit trees.

Wetlands.

Pollinator plants.

A seed bank.

A small workshop.

A classroom.

A library.

A community kitchen.

Lin Yue stared.

”This isn’t a farm.”

”No.”

”It’s a model.”

Zhao E Lian smiled.

”A small example of what civilization can become.”

The First Rule of the New World

Lin Yue walked to the center.

She placed a seed into the soil.

Shen Rui joined her.

Together they covered it.

Lin Yue said:

”We don’t need infinite resources.”

Shen Rui continued:

”We need renewable systems.”

Lumi added:

”And people who understand them.”

Zhao E Lian smiled.

”And people who trust one another.”

The Golden Space brightened.

The seed sprouted.

One tiny green leaf.

Then another.

The Hunger’s Last Whisper

The black crystal began to shrink.

But before disappearing—

it whispered:

You cannot change everyone.

Lin Yue stopped.

The crystal laughed.

Someone will always want more.

Lin Yue nodded.

”I know.”

The crystal pulsed.

Then I will always return.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Probably.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”That’s a surprisingly calm response.”

She shrugged.

”We don’t have to destroy it forever.”

”What do we do?”

”Manage it.”

The crystal flickered.

Lin Yue continued:

”Just like drought.”

”Just like floods.”

”Just like pests.”

”Just like greed.”

She looked at the fading darkness.

”We don’t pretend risks don’t exist.”

”We build systems that can survive them.”

The crystal disappeared.

The World Above

When Lin Yue returned to the farm—

the morning sun was rising.

Birds were singing.

Farmers were beginning work.

The printing press was already operating.

Children were carrying notebooks to school.

Workers were repairing irrigation channels.

The mountain terraces were green.

The forest remained protected.

The watershed cooperative was functioning.

The Golden Space had expanded.

But Lin Yue understood something now.

The work would never truly end.

There would always be droughts.

Floods.

Pests.

Market problems.

Family arguments.

Broken machines.

Bad harvests.

Unexpected disasters.

And occasionally—

magical ancient Hunger crystals.

She sighed.

Shen Rui laughed.

”What?”

”I was hoping farming would be peaceful.”

He smiled.

”You chose the wrong farm.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”Apparently.”

A New Family Tradition

That evening—

Grandmother gathered everyone around the table.

She had prepared a huge meal.

Vegetables from the mountain.

Fruit from the forest.

Grain from the farm.

Pickles from the cellar.

Everyone ate together.

Grandmother raised her cup.

”To rebuilding.”

Everyone cheered.

Then she added:

”And to never putting pickle jars on stairs again.”

The squirrel slowly lowered his head.

Everyone laughed.

Lin Yue smiled.

For all the ancient mysteries—

for all the lost civilizations—

for all the magical dangers—

this was what she wanted to protect.

A table.

A family.

Food.

Laughter.

People who trusted one another.

A home.

The Next Map

Later that night, Lin Yue entered the Golden Space.

The map had changed.

The mountain:

RESTORED.

The forest:

RESTORED.

The farm:

GROWING.

The watershed:

CONNECTED.

The knowledge network:

ACTIVE.

Then—

another location appeared.

Not the western desert.

Not another Keeper site.

A small golden mark appeared far beyond the known map.

Lumi stared.

”What is it?”

Lin Yue stepped closer.

”I don’t know.”

The label appeared.

THE FIRST CITY.

Shen Rui’s expression became serious.

”The city?”

Lin Yue nodded.

”The original civilization.”

Lumi shook her head.

”No.”

”What?”

”That isn’t what scares me.”

She pointed beneath the label.

Another message appeared.

POPULATION STATUS: ACTIVE.

Lin Yue froze.

Shen Rui stared.

”Active?”

Lumi whispered:

”Someone is still living there.”

A second message appeared.

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE RECEIVED.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

Then—

a third line appeared.

THEY KNOW YOUR NAME.

The Golden Space went completely silent.

Lin Yue stared at the words.

”Who sent that?”

No one answered.

Then a final message appeared.

WELCOME HOME, KEEPER.

To be continued...
