THE FORGOTTEN LADY'S LITTLE FARM

Chapter 51: Chapter Forty-Nine: When Fear Becomes Hunger

The Northern Kingdom was louder than Lin Yue expected.

Not with celebration.

With fear.

People shouted across the streets.

Merchants argued over prices.

Mothers clutched their children’s hands.

Farmers pushed carts toward the city gates.

Guards struggled to control the crowd.

Everywhere Lin Yue looked, she saw the same expression.

Fear.

And fear, she had learned, could travel faster than any army.

She stepped through the World Road and immediately heard a man shouting:

”There’s no grain left!”

Another shouted:

”The royal warehouses are full!”

A third yelled:

”They’re hiding it!”

Someone else screamed:

”War is coming!”

Lin Yue stopped.

Shen Rui stood beside her.

”Which one is true?”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”We don’t know yet.”

”Then what?”

She looked around.

”We verify.”

The First Rule of a Crisis

Lin Yue climbed onto a wooden platform.

Nobody knew who she was.

That was useful.

She raised her voice.

”Stop.”

The crowd ignored her.

She tried again.

”STOP!”

This time, several people turned.

Lin Yue pointed toward the shouting merchants.

”Everyone is telling you what they believe.”

She pointed toward the warehouses.

”We’re going to find out what is actually happening.”

A man shouted:

”We already know!”

”No.”

Lin Yue looked directly at him.

”You know what someone told you.”

The crowd quieted slightly.

”There’s a difference.”

The Grain Ledger

Lin Yue asked to see the city’s grain records.

The warehouse manager immediately objected.

”Who are you?”

”Someone trying to prevent a panic.”

”You’re not an official.”

”No.”

”Then I don’t have to show you anything.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Correct.”

The manager looked surprised.

She continued:

”But if you want people to stop accusing you of hoarding grain, transparency would help.”

The man hesitated.

That was exactly the problem.

Everyone was making claims.

Nobody had reliable information.

Eventually, he brought out the records.

Lin Yue examined them.

Then handed them to the accountant.

”Check the numbers.”

The accountant spent nearly an hour comparing:

Incoming grain.

Outgoing grain.

Current inventory.

Spoilage.

Private contracts.

Emergency reserves.

Military allocations.

Household distribution.

Finally, he looked up.

”The warehouse isn’t empty.”

The crowd murmured.

”How much?” Lin Yue asked.

The accountant gave the figure.

Lin Yue calculated quickly.

”Enough for approximately three weeks at the current distribution rate.”

The crowd erupted.

”Only three weeks!”

”We’re doomed!”

Lin Yue raised her hand.

”Not necessarily.”

The Difference Between Shortage and Panic

Lin Yue pointed toward the records.

”You have three weeks of stored grain.”

She pointed toward the surrounding countryside.

”You have fields.”

Then toward the river.

”You have fishing.”

Toward the markets.

”You have other food.”

She looked at the crowd.

”You don’t have unlimited grain.”

Everyone became silent.

”But that’s different from having no food.”

A woman whispered:

”So we’re not starving?”

”Not today.”

That distinction mattered.

Panic had transformed:

limited grain

into

no food.

And that had caused people to buy everything they could.

Which had emptied the markets.

That made the rumor seem true.

Lin Yue drew the chain on a board.

RUMOR

↓

PANIC BUYING

↓

HOARDING

↓

EMPTY SHELVES

↓

MORE FEAR

↓

MORE HOARDING

She turned around.

”This is how fear creates the thing it fears.”

The First Hunger’s Method

Shen Rui looked at the board.

”So the First Hunger doesn’t need to create scarcity.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”It only needs people to believe scarcity is coming.”

He understood.

”And then they create scarcity themselves.”

”Exactly.”

The First Hunger wasn’t producing food shortages.

It was exploiting human reactions to uncertainty.

That made it much harder to detect.

The Emergency Council

Lin Yue requested representatives from:

Farmers.

Merchants.

Warehouse managers.

Healers.

City officials.

Fishermen.

Millers.

Carters.

Accountants.

And ordinary families.

She deliberately included people who had no official position.

The council gathered that evening.

Lin Yue placed the grain figures in the center.

”We have a problem.”

Everyone expected bad news.

”The problem isn’t that we have no food.”

She pointed to the records.

”The problem is that nobody trusts the information.”

The city official frowned.

”What do you suggest?”

”Open records.”

The merchant objected.

”People don’t need to know everything.”

”They need enough accurate information to make reasonable decisions.”

”Won’t that cause more panic?”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”Secrets already caused panic.”

The Public Ledger

The city created a public food ledger.

Every week, it would show:

Grain reserves.

New harvest estimates.

Imports.

Exports.

Spoilage.

Emergency stores.

Market supply.

Expected consumption.

No private household records.

No sensitive information.

Just the numbers people needed.

The first report was posted the next morning.

Thousands gathered.

Lin Yue watched silently.

The numbers weren’t perfect.

But they were visible.

People could question them.

Check them.

Challenge them.

Correct mistakes.

That mattered more than perfection.

The Grain Ration

The council also introduced temporary purchasing limits.

Not because grain had completely disappeared.

Because panic buying was exhausting the available supply.

Each household could purchase enough for a reasonable period.

The merchants complained.

Lin Yue listened.

Then proposed something else.

”Instead of forcing every merchant to obey the same rule forever, review the numbers every three days.”

The officials agreed.

The restriction would change according to actual supply.

Evidence first.

Policy second.

Not fear first.

The First Victory

Within a week—

the markets stabilized.

Not completely.

But enough.

People stopped buying ten times more food than they needed.

Merchants stopped hiding sacks under their floors.

Families began returning excess grain.

The city breathed again.

Lin Yue stood in the market.

A merchant approached.

”You were right.”

She looked at him.

”About what?”

”The shortage.”

”There is still a shortage.”

”Yes.”

He nodded.

”But now we know exactly how serious it is.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”That makes it manageable.”

The Black Seed

But the investigation wasn’t finished.

Shen Rui had been following the strange merchant who originally introduced the black seed.

He returned that evening.

”We found the source.”

Lin Yue turned.

”Where?”

”The eastern warehouse district.”

”Who owns it?”

”A trading company.”

”Who runs it?”

”Three partners.”

”Do they know about the seed?”

Shen Rui shook his head.

”Not all of them.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”What do you mean?”

”One partner received it from someone else.”

”Who?”

”We don’t know.”

”Then we’re following the wrong trail.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”The seed wasn’t distributed through the merchants.”

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”How then?”

”Through gifts.” 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

Gifts

The First Hunger had not sold the seeds.

It had given them away.

To people who were already afraid.

A farmer afraid of losing his harvest.

A merchant afraid of bankruptcy.

A widow afraid of poverty.

A noble afraid of losing status.

A craftsman afraid of losing his workshop.

A parent afraid of not being able to feed their children.

The seeds did not create the fear.

They offered a shortcut.

A promise.

You don’t have to be afraid anymore.

All the victim had to do was accept.

The Farmer

They found the first farmer near sunset.

He was sitting beside a field covered in black vines.

His entire harvest had multiplied.

There were vegetables everywhere.

More than his family could consume.

Yet the farmer looked miserable.

”How much do you have?” Lin Yue asked.

He didn’t answer.

”Too much?”

He nodded.

”And you keep planting?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

The farmer looked at the field.

”What if next year is bad?”

Lin Yue understood.

He wasn’t farming anymore.

He was trying to eliminate uncertainty.

”Do you sleep?”

”No.”

”Do you eat?”

”Sometimes.”

”Do you visit your family?”

The man shook his head.

”I need to plant.”

Lin Yue looked at the vines.

The First Hunger had turned agriculture into compulsion.

The Choice

Lin Yue did not order him to stop.

Instead, she asked:

”What would make you feel safe enough to stop?”

The farmer thought.

”Three years of seed reserves.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”What else?”

”A proper grain store.”

”What else?”

”Reliable irrigation.”

”What else?”

”A community agreement that someone will help if my harvest fails.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Those are all things we can build.”

The black vine trembled.

The farmer stared.

”What?”

Lin Yue pointed toward it.

”The seed promised you security.”

She looked at his field.

”But it never taught you how to create it.”

The farmer slowly understood.

The Alternative

They removed the black vines carefully.

Not because magic could simply be destroyed.

Because the farmer no longer wanted them.

That mattered.

The moment he chose a different form of security—

the vines weakened.

Lin Yue watched carefully.

The First Hunger was strongest when desire became isolated.

But when desire became part of a healthy system—

it lost its grip.

The farmer needed food security.

So they built:

Seed reserves.

Crop diversity.

Water storage.

Community grain reserves.

Insurance through shared labor.

Training.

Knowledge.

Not one magical seed.

Many ordinary solutions.

The Second Lesson

Lin Yue wrote another principle on the public board.

A PROMISE OF SECURITY IS NOT THE SAME AS SECURITY.

Underneath:

REAL SECURITY IS BUILT FROM SYSTEMS.

Food security came from diverse crops.

Water security came from protected sources and storage.

Financial security came from savings and diversified income.

Health security came from sanitation and medical knowledge.

Community security came from trust and cooperation.

No single object could replace all of them.

Shen Rui’s Question

That night, Shen Rui asked:

”Do you think the First Hunger can be defeated?”

Lin Yue considered the question.

”I don’t know.”

He smiled.

”Good answer.”

She looked at him.

”Why?”

”Because you’re not pretending certainty.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”Don’t become smug.”

”Too late.”

She shook her head.

Then became serious.

”I don’t think we defeat it once.”

”What do you mean?”

”I think we learn how to live in a way that makes it harder for the First Hunger to control us.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”Like an immune system.”

”Exactly.”

The idea excited her.

Not a weapon.

A social immune system.

A community capable of detecting manipulation before it became destructive.

The Seven Questions

Lin Yue created seven questions.

Whenever someone encountered an extraordinary promise, rumor, or sudden opportunity, they should ask:

1. Who benefits if I believe this? 2. What evidence supports it? 3. What evidence contradicts it? 4. Am I acting because of facts or fear? 5. What happens if I’m wrong? 6. Is there a safer alternative? 7. Am I being pressured to act immediately?

The teachers loved the list.

The merchants hated it.

The children memorized it.

The squirrel used it to interrogate people offering snacks.

”Who benefits if I eat this?”

”Me.”

”What evidence supports it?”

”It tastes good.”

”AMAZING.”

Lin Yue buried her face in her hands.

The First Hunger Strikes Again

The next morning—

a new rumor appeared.

A neighboring kingdom had supposedly closed its borders.

The market reacted immediately.

People began buying salt.

Then cloth.

Then tools.

Then medicine.

Lin Yue arrived at the market.

”Who confirmed the border closure?”

Nobody knew.

”Who started the rumor?”

Nobody knew.

”Has anyone sent a messenger?”

Silence.

Shen Rui stepped forward.

”I’ll go.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”No.”

He raised an eyebrow.

”Why?”

”Because that’s exactly what the rumor wants.”

She pointed toward the market.

”Everyone is reacting before verifying.”

Instead, she sent three independent messengers.

Different routes.

Different contacts.

Different sources.

They would compare the information when they returned.

That was the new system.

Evidence Before Action

Two days later, the messengers returned.

The border was open.

There had been a minor customs dispute.

Someone had exaggerated it into a closure.

The market slowly calmed.

Lin Yue looked at the black thread in the Golden Space.

It had weakened.

Not disappeared.

But weakened.

The First Hunger had failed to turn rumor into panic.

Because the community had learned to pause.

A New Branch of the Legacy

Inside the Golden Space, another branch appeared.

CRITICAL THINKING.

It connected to:

Education.

Accounting.

Agriculture.

Governance.

Trade.

Medicine.

Communication.

Lin Yue smiled.

The Legacy System was changing again.

At first, she had thought its purpose was preserving knowledge.

Now she understood.

It preserved methods of thinking.

Not just answers.

Questions.

Verification.

Experimentation.

Correction.

Adaptation.

That was far more powerful.

Homecoming

When Lin Yue and Shen Rui finally returned to the farm, everyone gathered around them.

”How bad was it?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Bad enough.”

”Did you fix everything?”

”No.”

Grandmother looked pleased.

”Good.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”But we helped them build systems.”

Her father nodded.

”And did they learn?”

”Yes.”

Her mother asked:

”Then what did you learn?”

Lin Yue looked toward the World-Tree.

”That survival isn’t only about knowing how to grow food.”

She paused.

”It’s knowing how people behave when they think there won’t be enough.”

Shen Rui added:

”And teaching them not to destroy tomorrow because they’re afraid of today.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Exactly.”

A New Project

The next morning, Lin Yue added another section to the village school.

THE SCHOOL OF PRACTICAL REASONING

Children would learn:

Observation.

Measurement.

Record-keeping.

Basic probability.

Cause and effect.

Experiment design.

Source checking.

Problem solving.

Risk assessment.

Communication.

And how to admit:

”I don’t know.”

Lin Yue considered that one of the most important lessons of all.

The Quiet Conversation

That evening, she sat beneath the World-Tree with Shen Rui.

”You know what scares me?”

He looked at her.

”What?”

”That I’m beginning to understand the First Hunger.”

He was silent.

”I understand why people listen to it.”

She looked toward the distant village.

”When you’re frightened, certainty feels wonderful.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”And when someone promises to remove all uncertainty...”

”You want to believe them.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”That’s why fighting it won’t work.”

”What will?”

”Teaching people that uncertainty isn’t failure.”

She leaned against him.

”Sometimes not knowing is simply part of being alive.”

He smiled.

”And sometimes knowing you don’t know is wisdom.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”That’s annoyingly sensible.”

”I’ve had a good teacher.”

She laughed.

The New Threat

Just before midnight—

the World Road opened.

But no one had activated it.

Lin Yue stood immediately.

Shen Rui reached for his weapon.

A figure stepped through.

A woman.

Young.

Dust-covered.

Exhausted.

She collapsed before them.

Lin Yue rushed forward.

”Who are you?”

The woman opened her eyes.

”Please...”

She struggled to breathe.

”Don’t let them...”

”Who?”

”The First Hunger.”

Lin Yue froze.

The woman grabbed her sleeve.

”They found a way around the Golden Space.”

Lin Yue’s blood ran cold.

”What way?”

The woman whispered:

”They aren’t attacking your desires anymore.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

”They’re attacking other people’s desires through you.”

Lin Yue stared.

”What does that mean?”

The woman looked toward Shen Rui.

Then toward the farm.

Then back at Lin Yue.

”They discovered that the easiest way to control a person...”

She swallowed.

”...is to make them believe they are protecting someone they love.”

The World-Tree suddenly shuddered.

Every golden leaf fell at once.

And somewhere beneath the soil—

the black roots began to grow.

To be continued...
