Chapter 59: Chapter Fifty-Seven: Two Chosen Hands

The stone door opened without a sound.

That was somehow worse than a creaking door.

Lin Yue stood at the entrance.

The darkness beyond was absolute.

Not ordinary darkness.

It seemed to swallow the light from the torches.

Shen Rui moved closer.

”Stay behind me.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”No.”

”I knew you were going to say that.”

”I’ll walk beside you.”

He considered arguing.

Then sighed.

”Fine.”

Lumi floated between them.

Her tiny glow illuminated only a few steps ahead.

Behind them, Elder Han remained outside.

Lin Yue glanced back.

”You aren’t coming?”

Elder Han shook his head.

”I have never been invited.”

”You’re a caretaker.”

”Yes.”

”Then who is invited?”

He smiled.

”You two.”

Lin Yue looked at Shen Rui.

”That’s reassuring.”

”Very.”

They stepped inside.

The stone door closed behind them.

The Breathing Mountain

The tunnel descended.

Not steeply.

Gradually.

The walls were covered with roots.

Some were living.

Some were petrified.

Some seemed to glow faintly beneath the stone.

Lin Yue touched one.

Warm.

She frowned.

”Roots shouldn’t be warm.”

Shen Rui looked around.

”Nothing about this mountain seems normal.”

A deep sound echoed through the tunnel.

Hhhhhh—

Like breathing.

Lin Yue stopped.

”You hear that?”

Shen Rui nodded.

”The mountain.”

”No.”

She listened.

Again.

Hhhhhh—

”It isn’t the mountain.”

They continued.

The sound became louder.

Then Lin Yue realized what it was.

Someone was breathing.

The Chamber Below

The tunnel opened into a massive underground chamber.

A lake occupied its center.

The water was perfectly still.

At the far end stood a stone platform.

On the platform—

a man sat with his back against a pillar.

His clothes were ancient.

His hair was long.

His eyes were closed.

He looked dead.

Then—

his eyes opened.

Lin Yue stopped.

The man looked at her.

Then Shen Rui.

Then the two seeds in their hands.

His expression changed.

”You came.”

Lin Yue swallowed.

”Are you the Keeper?”

The man smiled faintly.

”Once.”

Shen Rui stepped forward.

”What happened to you?”

The man looked toward the underground lake.

”I failed.”

The Failed Keeper

Lin Yue approached cautiously.

”What did you fail to do?”

”Destroy the Hunger.”

She frowned.

”Why?”

”Because I believed it was an enemy.”

Lin Yue remembered the First Hunger.

She nodded slowly.

”And it wasn’t?”

”It was.”

He looked at her.

”But enemies are not always meant to be destroyed.”

Lin Yue thought about the Shadow Garden.

The First Hunger had become something different there.

Not harmless.

Not yet.

But understood.

The man continued.

”I spent decades fighting it.”

He looked exhausted.

”Every time I destroyed one manifestation, another appeared.”

”Because people continued to experience scarcity,” Lin Yue said.

He smiled.

”You understand.”

The Endless Cycle

The former Keeper explained.

Whenever famine occurred—

fear increased.

Whenever fear increased—

people hoarded.

Whenever people hoarded—

others suffered.

Whenever suffering increased—

the Hunger grew.

Destroying one manifestation changed nothing.

The cycle simply continued.

Lin Yue whispered:

”So the real problem was the system.”

”Yes.”

”Not merely the creature.”

”Yes.”

She looked toward the underground lake.

”And that’s why the Golden Space created the Shadow Garden.”

The man nodded.

”To transform memory into knowledge.”

The Two Seeds

Lin Yue looked at the seed in her palm.

”What do these represent?”

The man smiled.

”One is responsibility.”

She looked at Shen Rui’s seed.

”And the other?”

”Relationship.”

Lin Yue blinked.

Shen Rui looked equally confused.

”Relationship?”

The man nodded.

”The Golden Space once belonged to individual Keepers.”

He looked toward Lin Yue.

”They became powerful.”

Then toward Shen Rui.

”They became isolated.”

”What happened?”

”They began believing that only they could make the correct decisions.”

Lin Yue understood.

Power without accountability.

Knowledge without cooperation.

Resources without distribution.

Every system could become dangerous when controlled by one person.

”So the Golden Space changed the rule,” she said.

”Yes.”

”It chose two.”

”Not because two people are automatically wiser.”

The former Keeper smiled.

”But because two people can question one another.”

Shen Rui looked at Lin Yue.

”That explains quite a lot.”

Lin Yue narrowed her eyes.

”Are you saying I need supervision?”

”Occasionally.”

”Careful.”

He smiled.

The First Test

The underground chamber changed.

The lake began to glow.

Two bridges appeared.

One led left.

One led right.

Above the left bridge:

KNOWLEDGE

Above the right:

POWER

A voice echoed through the chamber.

CHOOSE.

Lin Yue looked at Shen Rui.

”What do you think?”

”Knowledge.”

”Why?”

”Because power without knowledge is dangerous.”

Lin Yue nodded.

Then she noticed something.

The bridge marked POWER was shorter.

Much shorter.

She looked at the former Keeper.

He smiled.

”This is a trap.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”The obvious answer.”

Lin Yue examined both paths.

The knowledge bridge was long.

The power bridge was short.

But the power bridge had no railing.

The knowledge bridge had sturdy handrails.

She smiled.

”Knowledge.”

The chamber remained silent.

Then the voice spoke again.

WHY?

Lin Yue answered:

”Because the point isn’t to reach the end quickly.”

She touched the railing.

”It’s to reach it safely.”

The bridge brightened.

The Second Test

The chamber changed again.

This time—

two baskets appeared.

One contained grain.

The other contained seeds.

A voice asked:

A FAMINE COMES.

WHICH DO YOU DISTRIBUTE?

Lin Yue immediately answered:

”Both.”

The chamber remained dark.

Shen Rui frowned.

”That isn’t enough.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

He continued.

”If you distribute all the grain, people survive today but have nothing to plant.”

”And if we distribute only seeds?”

”People starve before the next harvest.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”So the answer is balance.”

The chamber brightened.

The former Keeper nodded.

”Exactly.”

The Third Test

A third scene appeared.

A village.

The harvest had failed.

There was enough food for only half the population.

The voice asked:

WHO RECEIVES THE FOOD?

Lin Yue frowned.

”Children.”

The chamber remained silent.

She corrected herself.

”Children, elderly people, sick people, and those unable to obtain food themselves.”

Still nothing.

Shen Rui said:

”Farmers.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”Why?”

”Because without farmers, next season fails.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”So we protect immediate survival and future survival.”

The chamber brightened.

The voice spoke:

HOW?

Lin Yue answered:

”Create emergency rations.”

Shen Rui continued:

”Protect seed stocks.”

Lin Yue:

”Organize labor.”

Shen Rui:

”Repair irrigation.”

Lin Yue:

”Reduce waste.”

Shen Rui:

”Prioritize vulnerable people.”

They looked at each other.

The chamber glowed.

The former Keeper smiled.

”You understand.”

The Real Lesson

Lin Yue finally realized what the tests were doing.

They weren’t asking for a perfect answer.

They were asking whether she could see the system.

Every decision affected another.

Food affected labor.

Labor affected production.

Production affected trade.

Trade affected prices.

Prices affected households.

Households affected communities.

Communities affected the environment.

Everything connected.

The Golden Space wasn’t rewarding cleverness.

It was rewarding systems thinking.

Lin Yue smiled.

”I understand now.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”What?”

”The Golden Space isn’t a treasure chest.”

She looked around.

”It’s an ecosystem.”

The Former Keeper’s Warning

The man stood.

His movements were slow.

But steady.

”There is one thing you still don’t understand.”

Lin Yue waited.

”The Golden Space will eventually give you more than you can manage.”

She frowned.

”How much?”

He laughed softly.

”Enough to tempt you.”

”With resources?”

”With solutions.”

Lin Yue became serious.

He continued.

”You will discover plants that grow faster.”

”Machines that work better.”

”Methods that produce more.”

”Magic that makes impossible things possible.”

He looked directly at her.

”And eventually you will face the most dangerous question.”

”What question?”

The man said:

Just because you can improve something, should you?

Lin Yue was silent.

Development Has a Cost

The former Keeper walked toward the underground lake.

”Every improvement changes something.”

More irrigation can reduce downstream water.

More farming can reduce forests.

More roads can fragment habitats.

More industry can create pollution.

More trade can increase inequality.

More food can increase population pressure.

More technology can create new dependencies.

Lin Yue listened carefully.

Her Environmental Science education suddenly felt more important than ever.

Development wasn’t simply:

BUILD MORE.

It was:

BUILD BETTER. BUILD RESPONSIBLY. MEASURE THE CONSEQUENCES. ADAPT.

The Environmental Ledger

Lin Yue immediately took out her notebook.

Shen Rui laughed.

”You’re taking notes?”

”Of course.”

”During a magical revelation?”

”Especially during a magical revelation.”

She wrote:

EVERY PROJECT REQUIRES AN ENVIRONMENTAL LEDGER.

Then:

INPUTS.

OUTPUTS.

WASTE.

RESOURCE CONSUMPTION.

ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS.

SOCIAL EFFECTS.

LONG-TERM RISKS.

Shen Rui looked at the list.

”This will make planning slower.”

”Yes.”

”Much slower.”

”Yes.”

”Grandmother will complain.”

”Definitely.”

He smiled.

”Then it must be important.”

The Fourth Door

A door appeared behind the former Keeper.

Unlike the others—

it was small.

Only large enough for one person.

Lin Yue approached.

”What is behind it?”

”The answer.”

”To what?”

”The question you haven’t asked yet.”

She frowned.

”What question?”

The former Keeper smiled.

”That is for you to discover.”

Lin Yue reached for the handle.

Shen Rui caught her wrist.

”Wait.”

She looked at him.

”What?”

He pointed.

There was an inscription.

NO ONE ENTERS ALONE.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then we go together.”

The door opened.

The Memory Room

Inside was a tiny room.

No treasure.

No machinery.

No weapons.

Just a wooden table.

On it—

two cups.

Two chairs.

And a single book.

Lin Yue opened it.

The pages were blank.

She frowned.

”It’s empty.”

Shen Rui touched the page.

Words appeared.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BUILD?

Lin Yue thought.

”A prosperous farm.”

The words disappeared.

A new question appeared.

WHY?

She answered:

”To create security.”

The words remained.

FOR WHOM?

Lin Yue hesitated.

”My family.”

The page remained blank.

She continued.

”My community.”

Nothing.

She looked at Shen Rui.

Then at the book.

Finally, she said:

”For anyone who depends on what we build.”

The page glowed.

New words appeared.

ACCEPTED.

Shen Rui’s Answer

The book turned toward Shen Rui.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BUILD?

He was quiet for a moment.

Then:

”A place where people don’t have to choose between loyalty and survival.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

The book continued.

WHY?

He answered:

”Because people shouldn’t have to betray those they love simply because resources are scarce.”

Lin Yue’s expression softened.

The page glowed.

ACCEPTED.

Then both cups filled with water.

Nothing else happened.

Lin Yue stared.

”That’s it?”

The former Keeper laughed.

”Yes.”

”You gave us two cups of water?”

”No.”

He pointed toward the cups.

”You gave yourselves the answer.”

The Gift

The former Keeper placed his hands over the two seeds.

Golden light spread between them.

The seeds changed.

Lin Yue’s seed became green.

Shen Rui’s became blue.

The former Keeper explained:

”Yours will respond to knowledge.”

He pointed toward Lin Yue.

”His will respond to connection.”

Shen Rui looked confused.

”What does that mean?”

”You will discover.”

Lin Yue looked at her seed.

”What happens if we plant them together?”

The former Keeper smiled.

”That is the experiment.”

Returning to the Surface

The expedition returned to the surface before sunset.

Elder Han was waiting.

He looked at the two seeds.

Then smiled.

”You succeeded.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”We haven’t done anything yet.”

Elder Han laughed.

”That is exactly why you succeeded.”

The villagers gathered around.

Lin Yue explained what they had learned.

Not everything.

Some knowledge was too dangerous to distribute immediately.

But she shared the agricultural discoveries.

Water-management principles.

Terrace construction.

Soil conservation.

Seed preservation.

And the idea of maintaining environmental records.

The villagers listened.

One farmer asked:

”Will you teach us?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Yes.”

The Mountain Farm Project

Instead of taking the ancient farming system back to her own land—

Lin Yue proposed something different.

They would restore it together.

The villagers would provide labor.

Her engineers would provide technical assistance.

Her agricultural team would document the crops.

The children would record observations.

The accountants would track costs.

The farmers would decide which methods were practical.

And the Golden Space would preserve the knowledge.

It would not be another magical shortcut.

It would be a living demonstration.

The First Terraces

The restoration began.

Broken walls were rebuilt.

Drainage channels cleared.

Water flow measured.

Soil tested.

Trees planted along vulnerable slopes.

Crops selected according to elevation.

The old system slowly returned to life.

But Lin Yue improved one thing.

Every terrace received an observation marker.

Each marker recorded:

Soil condition.

Crop type.

Water use.

Yield.

Erosion.

Maintenance.

This meant future generations could learn from the land.

Not simply repeat tradition.

The Family Arrives

A month later—

Grandmother arrived.

She looked around.

”You’ve built another farm.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”It’s a restoration project.”

Grandmother looked at the terraces.

”Can we grow vegetables?”

”Yes.”

”Fruit?”

”Yes.”

”Pickles?”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Yes.”

Grandmother nodded.

”Excellent project.”

Shen Rui laughed.

A Small Moment

That evening, Lin Yue sat beside the mountain stream.

Shen Rui joined her.

The valley was quiet.

”You were right,” he said.

”About what?”

”Two people.”

She looked at him.

”The Keeper chose two because one person shouldn’t carry everything alone.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”You’re saying you need me?”

”Yes.”

She looked down at the water.

”I need you too.”

Neither spoke for a while.

The silence wasn’t awkward.

It was comfortable.

Then Shen Rui said:

”Your ears are red again.”

Lin Yue splashed water at him.

He laughed.

She smiled.

The Seeds Are Planted

Before leaving the mountain, they planted the two transformed seeds.

Not separately.

Together.

One green.

One blue.

Their roots slowly intertwined.

The Golden Space reacted.

A new tree began to grow.

Its trunk was neither green nor blue.

It was gold.

Its first leaves unfolded.

Then—

two flowers appeared.

One white.

One violet.

Lumi stared.

”I’ve never seen that before.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Good.”

”Why good?”

”Because now we’re all learning.”

The New Name

The farmers gathered around the tree.

Someone asked:

”What should we call it?”

Lin Yue thought.

The tree represented knowledge.

Cooperation.

Agriculture.

Environmental balance.

Family.

Community.

Shared responsibility.

She smiled.

”Let’s call it the Harmony Tree.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”Appropriate.”

Grandmother immediately objected.

”No.”

Everyone stared.

”Why?”

Grandmother pointed at the tree.

”Too serious.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”What would you call it?”

Grandmother thought for a moment.

”The Pickle Tree.”

Lin Yue stared.

”It’s not even a pickle plant!”

Grandmother shrugged.

”It will be eventually.”

Everyone burst out laughing.

Even Elder Han.

Three Roads

The next morning, Lin Yue prepared to return home.

But before leaving—

Lumi appeared with the map.

The three Keeper sites remained.

The northern mountain had been restored.

Two remained.

DEEP FOREST.WESTERN DESERT.

Lin Yue studied them.

The forest site was surrounded by green.

The desert site was marked with red.

Shen Rui looked over her shoulder.

”Which one next?”

Lin Yue thought.

”The forest.”

”Why?”

”Water.”

He nodded.

”And biodiversity.”

”Yes.”

”Disease risks.”

”Yes.”

”Unknown wildlife.”

”Yes.”

He sighed.

”I was hoping you’d say something simple.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”You married the wrong woman.”

Shen Rui froze.

Lin Yue froze.

The entire group froze.

Grandmother slowly turned around.

Her eyes widened.

Then—

she grinned.

Lin Yue’s face became bright red.

”I meant—”

Grandmother shouted:

”EVERYONE HEARD THAT!”

Lin Yue covered her face.

Shen Rui was laughing so hard he couldn’t speak.

Lumi giggled.

The squirrel began making wedding noises.

”Stop!”

Lin Yue chased him.

The mountain echoed with laughter.

The Road Ahead

Far behind them—

the Harmony Tree grew.

Its roots connected with the ancient terraces.

Its leaves absorbed sunlight.

Its roots stabilized the soil.

Its branches carried tiny golden fruits.

And somewhere beneath the mountain—

something ancient opened its eyes.

Not the First Hunger.

Something else.

Something that had been watching the Keepers for centuries.

A whisper moved through the underground tunnels.

Two have been chosen.

Another voice answered:

Then the old game begins again.

The first voice laughed.

No.

This time, it will be different.

Far away, inside the Golden Space—

the World-Tree trembled.

A new message appeared.

KEEPER NETWORK: 2/3 RESTORED.

Then—

beneath it—

UNKNOWN OBSERVER DETECTED.

Lin Yue did not see the message.

Not yet.

She was too busy arguing with the squirrel about pickles.

And perhaps—

for now—

that was exactly what the Golden Space wanted.
