Chapter 67: Chapter Sixty-Five: The Perfect Harvest

The golden tree opened its eyes.

The entire hall trembled.

Black roots burst from the floor.

Lin Yue grabbed Shen Rui’s hand and pulled him backward.

”Move!”

The engineer shouted.

”Which way?”

Lin Yue looked around.

The main doors were sealed.

The windows had disappeared.

The walls were covered in golden roots.

Then—

she noticed something.

The roots weren’t attacking randomly.

They were connecting to the machinery.

Pipes.

Water channels.

Storage tanks.

Power conduits.

Lin Yue’s eyes narrowed.

”It isn’t attacking us.”

Shen Rui looked at the roots.

”Then what is it doing?”

”Taking control.”

The Perfect System

The golden tree pulsed.

A warm golden light spread through the hall.

The terrified people outside suddenly became calm.

Too calm.

A child who had been crying stopped.

A farmer who had been shouting lowered his voice.

A woman dropped the tool she was carrying.

Everyone stared at the tree.

Then they smiled.

Lin Yue’s stomach tightened.

”No.”

Cael turned toward her.

”See?”

He spread his arms.

”They are happy.”

Lin Yue stared at the people.

Their expressions were peaceful.

But their eyes were empty.

”They’re not happy.”

Cael frowned.

”They have everything they need.”

”They’re not choosing it.”

His expression hardened.

”You always need to struggle.”

”No.”

Lin Yue looked directly at him.

”People need the freedom to choose whether something is worth the struggle.”

The First Escape

Lin Yue pulled Shen Rui toward a maintenance corridor.

”Where are we going?” he asked.

”The water system.”

He stared at her.

”Now?”

”Especially now.”

She pointed toward the roots.

”If the Hunger controls the city’s infrastructure, the infrastructure is also its weakness.”

The engineer immediately understood.

”You want to disconnect it.”

”Not completely.”

”Why not?”

”Because the city depends on these systems.”

She looked toward the golden tree.

”We remove its control without destroying the system.”

The engineer grinned.

”That will be difficult.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Good.”

The Maintenance Tunnel

They reached the lower tunnel.

The air was warm.

Too warm.

The pipes vibrated.

Golden roots wrapped around them.

The water specialist examined the valves.

”Water pressure is increasing.”

”How much?”

”Dangerously.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”What happens if it reaches maximum?”

”The pipes could rupture.”

”Then we need to reduce pressure.”

The engineer shook his head.

”The main valves are controlled from the central tower.”

Lin Yue pointed at the roots.

”Not anymore.”

She crouched.

”These roots are carrying energy.”

”Can we cut them?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”They’ll release the energy.”

”How do you know?”

”I don’t.”

She looked at Lumi.

”But I know someone who does.”

Lumi’s Warning

Lumi floated closer.

”Do not cut them.”

Everyone looked at her.

Lin Yue nodded.

”Why?”

”They aren’t just roots.”

”What are they?”

”Connections.”

”To what?”

Lumi looked frightened.

”To the Hunger itself.”

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”So if we cut them—”

”The Hunger will move.”

”Into what?”

Lumi whispered:

”Anything nearby.”

Everyone stepped away from the roots.

The New Plan

Lin Yue thought quickly.

”If we can’t disconnect the roots...”

She examined the water system.

”...we redirect them.”

The engineer stared.

”Redirect what?”

”The energy.”

”To where?”

Lin Yue pointed upward.

”The golden fields.”

Everyone stared.

The engineer slowly understood.

”You want the Hunger to feed the crops.”

”No.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”I want the system to feed itself.”

The Golden Fields

Sunfall’s fields were producing enormous crops.

But the crops were not healthy.

Their growth was being forced.

The soil beneath them was depleted.

The roots of the golden tree were supplying artificial energy.

Lin Yue examined a wheat stalk.

It was huge.

But its roots were shallow.

Its leaves were thin.

Its seeds were weak.

”This isn’t abundance.”

She held the stalk.

”It’s acceleration.”

The botanist nodded.

”It grows quickly.”

”But it cannot sustain itself.”

”Exactly.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”The system is consuming the future to produce the present.”

The Real Cost

She ordered soil samples.

The results came quickly.

Organic matter:

Extremely low.

Microbial diversity:

Extremely low.

Nutrient balance:

Severely depleted.

Water dependency:

Extreme.

Seed viability:

Declining.

Lin Yue looked at the results.

”How long?”

The botanist swallowed.

”Perhaps two harvests.”

Lin Yue looked at the golden fields.

”Then Sunfall isn’t a perfect city.”

”No.”

”It’s a city running on borrowed time.”

Cael’s Argument

Cael found them in the fields.

”You’re trying to frighten people.”

Lin Yue turned.

”No.”

”You want them to abandon abundance.”

”No.”

”You want them to suffer again.”

”No.”

She pointed toward the crops.

”I want them to survive.”

Cael laughed.

”They are surviving.”

”For now.”

She held up the soil report.

”Your system is consuming the soil.”

He dismissed it.

”We’ll create more fertilizer.”

”And where will it come from?”

”We’ll build more machines.”

”With what materials?”

”We’ll mine more.”

”From where?”

He stopped.

Lin Yue stepped closer.

”And when those resources run out?”

Cael’s face tightened.

”You always find another problem.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Because systems have consequences.”

The Promise

The Hunger spoke through the golden tree.

I CAN REMOVE EVERY LIMIT.

Lin Yue looked toward it.

”You can’t.”

I CAN.

”You can hide them.”

The tree pulsed.

MORE FOOD.

”Until the soil dies.”

MORE WATER.

”Until the rivers empty.”

MORE ENERGY.

”Until the reserves disappear.”

The golden tree became brighter.

MORE LIFE.

Lin Yue shook her head.

”Life isn’t measured by how much you consume.”

She looked at the people.

”It’s measured by how long the system can continue.”

The Children

A little girl approached.

She looked confused.

”Why are you fighting?”

Lin Yue crouched.

”We’re not fighting.”

”But the tree says everything is fine.”

Lin Yue looked at the tree.

Then at the girl.

”Do you like your school?”

”Yes.”

”Do you like learning?”

”Yes.”

”What do you want to learn next?”

The girl thought.

”I want to learn how to grow flowers.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then you should.”

The girl looked toward the golden tree.

”But the Keeper says I don’t need to learn.”

Lin Yue’s heart sank.

There it was.

The real danger.

Not hunger.

Not magic.

Dependency.

The School

Lin Yue entered the school.

Every classroom was identical.

Every child received the same lesson.

Every answer was predetermined.

No experiments.

No questions.

No mistakes.

No disagreement.

Lin Yue looked at the teacher.

”What happens if a child gives the wrong answer?”

The teacher smiled.

”There are no wrong answers.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Then what happens if they ask a question you don’t know?”

The teacher hesitated.

”I ask the Keeper.”

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

The Hunger had not merely taken resources.

It had taken curiosity.

The First Question

Lin Yue stood before the children.

”Who knows how to plant a seed?”

Almost every hand rose.

She smiled.

”Good.”

”Who knows why it grows?”

Fewer hands.

”Who knows what happens if the soil loses nutrients?”

Only one child raised a hand.

”And who knows how to restore the soil?”

Nobody.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then we have work to do.”

The children looked interested.

For the first time—

they were being invited to discover something.

The Classroom Changes

Lin Yue began with a simple experiment.

Three pots.

One with healthy soil.

One with depleted soil.

One with compost.

They planted the same seed in each.

Then—

they waited.

Children recorded:

Water.

Growth.

Leaves.

Root development.

Soil texture.

Insects.

Every day—

they observed.

The Hunger’s golden light weakened.

Because the children were learning.

And learning created independence.

Cael Watches

Cael stood outside the classroom.

He looked angry.

”You’re teaching them to question me.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because they should question everyone.”

”Even you?”

”Especially me.”

Cael stared.

Lin Yue continued:

”If I tell them something wrong, they should be able to discover it.”

The children looked at her.

That sentence mattered.

A teacher who could be questioned.

A leader who could be challenged.

A system that could be corrected.

That was the opposite of the Hunger.

The First Crack

That evening—

one of the golden roots withdrew.

Then another.

The tree pulsed.

The Hunger spoke:

STOP.

Lin Yue smiled.

”No.”

THEY NEED ME.

”No.”

She looked at the children.

”They need each other.”

Another root withdrew.

The tree shook.

Cael stared in disbelief.

”What are you doing?”

”Changing the system.”

The Farmers Organize

The farmers began meeting.

They compared soil records.

They shared observations.

They realized something important.

The fields closest to the golden tree had the worst soil.

Fields farther away were healthier.

The conclusion was obvious.

The golden tree’s magic was accelerating growth while damaging the underlying system.

The farmers proposed reducing magical input.

Cael opposed them.

”No.”

One farmer asked:

”Why?”

”Because production will fall.”

The farmer looked at the fields.

”It already is.”

Cael had no answer.

The First Harvest Without Magic

They selected a small field.

No golden energy.

No magical fertilizer.

No artificial acceleration.

Only:

Compost.

Crop rotation.

Mulching.

Water conservation.

Mixed planting.

Natural pest management.

The first harvest was smaller.

Much smaller.

Cael laughed.

”You see?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Not yet.”

The next season—

the soil improved.

The harvest increased.

The following season—

it increased again.

Meanwhile—

the magical fields declined.

The farmers finally understood.

The old system had optimized for maximum production.

The new system optimized for long-term productivity.

The Hunger Weakens

The golden tree began losing its glow.

People noticed.

The city became nervous.

”What happens if it dies?”

Lin Yue answered:

”Then we learn how to live without it.”

That frightened people.

But it also gave them something they had forgotten.

Choice.

The Emergency

Then—

the golden tree released a shockwave.

The entire city shook.

The fields collapsed.

Golden fruit fell.

Water channels overflowed.

Machines stopped.

People screamed.

The Hunger had chosen desperation.

Lin Yue shouted:

”Everyone to your stations!”

The city moved.

Farmers protected seed stores.

Engineers stabilized water channels.

Healers opened emergency centers.

Teachers gathered children.

Merchants distributed food.

No one waited for Cael.

No one waited for Lin Yue.

They acted.

Together.

The Final Root

At the center of the city—

the golden tree cracked.

One enormous root remained.

Lin Yue approached it.

Cael stood beside her.

He looked exhausted.

”What happens now?”

”We remove the last connection.”

”Can it be destroyed?”

”No.”

”Then what?”

Lin Yue placed her hand on the root.

”We change what it feeds.”

She directed it toward:

The soil.

The water.

The seed bank.

The forest.

The people.

Not consumption.

Restoration.

The root glowed.

Then—

slowly—

it changed from gold to green.

The Tree Changes

The golden tree did not disappear.

It transformed.

Its enormous fruits fell.

New leaves emerged.

Its roots withdrew from the machines.

They entered the soil.

Water flowed naturally.

The fields stopped accelerating.

The city became quieter.

The artificial abundance disappeared.

But something else remained.

Knowledge.

Skills.

Seeds.

Tools.

Community.

The people had lost the illusion of infinite supply.

They had gained something better.

The ability to create.

Cael’s Choice

Cael stood beneath the transformed tree.

He looked at Lin Yue.

”I thought I was saving them.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”I know.”

”I thought if nobody suffered, nobody would be afraid.”

”That was the idea.”

”And instead...”

”You removed their ability to choose.”

He looked toward the children.

”What happens to me?”

Lin Yue considered him.

”You help rebuild.”

He stared.

”You’d let me?”

”Yes.”

”After what I did?”

”You made a serious mistake.”

He lowered his head.

”But you can repair it.”

Cael looked surprised.

Lin Yue smiled.

”That’s what restoration means.”

Sunfall’s New Beginning

The city changed.

The giant fields were divided.

Crop diversity increased.

The soil was restored.

Water use was measured.

Schools were redesigned.

Children learned practical skills.

Every household received basic agricultural training.

The golden tree became a protected ecological center.

No one controlled it.

No one owned it.

No one depended upon it.

The city created a council.

And Cael—

rather than remaining Keeper—

became a teacher.

His first lesson was simple.

NEVER CONFUSE ABUNDANCE WITH SECURITY. The Seed Exchange

Before leaving Sunfall—

Lin Yue was given a small box.

Inside were three seeds.

Not golden.

Ordinary.

One bean.

One grain.

One fruit seed.

Cael explained:

”These survived before the Golden Seed.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then these are more valuable.”

”Why?”

”Because they’re resilient.”

She placed them carefully in her bag.

The botanist looked at her.

”Will you plant them at your farm?”

”Yes.”

”What if they fail?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then we learn.”

The Road Home

The journey back took longer.

But Lin Yue didn’t mind.

They stopped at settlements.

Shared information.

Collected reports.

Distributed seeds.

Trained farmers.

Left manuals.

Connected teachers.

The network continued growing.

But now—

it wasn’t just an information network.

It was becoming a learning network.

Every failure became a lesson.

Every success became a method.

Every method became knowledge.

Every piece of knowledge was shared.

The Message

When Lin Yue finally returned to the Golden Space—

the World-Tree had changed.

Its branches were enormous.

Its leaves carried thousands of symbols.

Each represented a community.

The old inscription—

COMMUNITY NETWORK

had changed.

Now it read:

LIVING NETWORK

Lumi floated beside her.

”You did it.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”No.”

She looked at the thousands of leaves.

”They did.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”That distinction matters.”

The New Leaf

A new leaf appeared.

It was unlike the others.

It contained no village.

No city.

No resource.

Instead—

it showed a small group of children.

They were planting seeds.

One child watered.

Another measured.

Another recorded.

Another prepared compost.

Another taught the youngest child how to plant.

Lin Yue smiled.

”What does that mean?”

Lumi answered:

”The next generation.”

Lin Yue touched the leaf.

The Golden Space brightened.

Then—

another message appeared.

NETWORK STABILITY: 12%

Lin Yue frowned.

”Only twelve percent?”

Lumi nodded.

”The network is still fragile.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Of course.”

Shen Rui laughed.

”What did you expect?”

She looked at the enormous map.

”I don’t know.”

Then another message appeared.

NEW THREAT DETECTED.

The map expanded.

Far beyond Sunfall—

beyond the First City—

beyond the northern settlements—

a black region appeared.

It was larger than anything they had seen.

Lumi’s expression changed.

Lin Yue stared.

”What is that?”

Lumi whispered:

”The place where the Hunger began.”

A location name appeared.

THE DEAD CONTINENT.

Lin Yue’s smile disappeared.

Shen Rui stepped beside her.

”Is anyone living there?”

Lumi shook her head.

”No.”

”Then why is the network detecting activity?”

The black region pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

thousands of golden points appeared inside it.

Lin Yue stared in disbelief.

”Those aren’t Hunger fragments.”

”No.”

”Then what are they?”

Lumi’s voice trembled.

”People.”

Lin Yue looked at the map.

”How many?”

Lumi answered:

”Millions.”

Silence.

Then the Golden Space displayed one final message:

THEY HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THE NETWORK.

Lin Yue slowly closed her notebook.

The next journey would not be about saving one city.

It would be about discovering an entire lost population—

and finding out why they had remained silent for so long.

To be continued...
