Chapter 55: Chapter Fifty-Three: The Face of Fear

The creature smiled with Lin Yue’s face.

It was the most unsettling thing she had ever seen.

Not because it looked convincing.

Because it looked almost convincing.

The eyes were wrong.

Too still.

Too empty.

Lin Yue stared at herself standing across the courtyard.

The creature tilted its head.

”You don’t trust me?”

Lin Yue folded her arms.

”No.”

The creature smiled.

”Why?”

”Because I know myself.”

The creature’s smile widened.

”Do you?”

Lin Yue didn’t answer.

Behind her, Shen Rui whispered:

”Lin Yue.”

”I know.”

”It’s trying to provoke you.”

”I know.”

”Don’t listen.”

”I know.”

He paused.

”You’re saying that a lot.”

She glanced at him.

”Because you’re also saying obvious things.”

Despite everything—

Shen Rui smiled.

The creature’s expression changed.

For the first time—

it looked annoyed.

The Test

Lin Yue raised her hand.

”Everyone stay where you are.”

Her father stepped forward.

”Yue’er—”

”Stay there.”

He stopped.

Lin Yue looked at him.

Then at the creature.

”Tell me something only my father would know.”

The creature smiled.

”Easy.”

It began describing childhood memories.

A broken toy.

A winter morning.

A childhood illness.

A family celebration.

Everything sounded perfect.

Too perfect.

Lin Yue listened carefully.

Then asked:

”What did you call me when I was six?”

The creature answered immediately.

”Little Yue.”

Lin Yue smiled.

Wrong.

Her father had always called her—

”Little troublemaker.”

The creature’s face flickered.

Just for a second.

But everyone saw it.

Shen Rui stepped forward.

”It’s an imitation.”

The creature laughed.

”Of course.”

Its face shifted.

Now it looked like Lin Yue’s mother.

Then Grandmother.

Then Shen Rui.

Finally, it returned to Lin Yue.

”You think knowing memories makes you safe?”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”No.”

She pointed at it.

”But making mistakes does make you predictable.”

The creature frowned.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Thank you.”

The Trap

The creature lunged.

Shen Rui drew his sword.

But Lin Yue shouted:

”Don’t attack!”

He stopped.

The creature passed through him.

Not physically.

Like smoke.

It appeared behind Lin Yue.

She felt cold fingers touch her shoulder.

Then—

nothing.

The creature vanished.

The courtyard became silent.

A farmer whispered:

”Where did it go?”

Lin Yue looked around.

”Inside.”

Everyone froze.

”Inside what?”

She touched her chest.

”Us.”

The Golden Space

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

She entered the Golden Space.

The World-Tree was black.

Every leaf had turned dark.

But the roots remained golden.

She walked toward the tree.

”Lumi?”

No answer.

”Lumi!”

A tiny light appeared.

Lumi looked exhausted.

”What happened?”

”It entered through fear.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Fear isn’t a doorway.”

”It is when you believe the fear is someone you love.”

Lin Yue looked at the black leaves.

”So it’s inside the Golden Space.”

”Yes.”

”Can we remove it?”

Lumi shook her head.

”Not directly.”

”Why?”

”Because you can’t fight something while believing it is someone you are trying to protect.”

Lin Yue understood.

The creature’s greatest defense wasn’t strength.

It was emotional confusion.

The Rule of Recognition

Lin Yue looked at the tree.

”How do we distinguish the real from the imitation?”

Lumi smiled.

”Don’t ask who they are.”

”Then what do we ask?”

”Ask what they choose.”

Lin Yue paused.

”What they choose?”

”The First Hunger can copy memories.”

Lumi touched a black leaf.

”It can copy appearances.”

Another leaf.

”It can copy voices.”

Another. ℯℯ𝑙.

”It can even copy emotional memories.”

She looked at Lin Yue.

”But it cannot create genuine choice.”

Lin Yue’s eyes sharpened.

”So the test isn’t identity.”

”No.”

”It’s behavior.”

”Yes.”

The Family Test

Lin Yue returned to the courtyard.

Everyone gathered around her.

”We’re going to do something unusual.”

Grandmother raised an eyebrow.

”Again?”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Again.”

She explained the problem.

The creature could imitate anyone.

So they needed a different method.

Each family member would be given a choice.

Not a question about memories.

A choice involving values.

Her father went first.

Lin Yue asked:

”If you had enough grain to feed your household for six months, but your neighbors had none, what would you do?”

Her father didn’t hesitate.

”Share some.”

”Even if your supply became smaller?”

”Yes.”

Grandmother snorted.

”Obviously.”

Lin Yue smiled.

Her mother answered next.

”What if sharing endangered your children?”

Her mother thought carefully.

”Then I would protect them first.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”That is honest.”

Her mother frowned.

”Shouldn’t I have given the nicer answer?”

”No.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”That’s exactly why it’s useful.”

Real People Are Complicated

The creature could imitate simple virtues.

But genuine people were inconsistent.

Sometimes selfish.

Sometimes generous.

Sometimes frightened.

Sometimes brave.

Sometimes contradictory.

Lin Yue realized something important.

The First Hunger wanted people to believe there was a perfect answer.

But real relationships weren’t built on perfect answers.

They were built on knowing one another’s imperfections.

That made genuine people harder to imitate.

Shen Rui’s Turn

Lin Yue looked at him.

”Your turn.”

He raised an eyebrow.

”Ask.”

”If protecting me meant allowing another innocent person to be harmed, what would you do?”

The courtyard became silent.

Shen Rui didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

”I’d try to find another option.”

”And if there wasn’t one?”

He looked at Lin Yue.

”I would not pretend that hurting someone else becomes right simply because I love you.”

Lin Yue stared at him.

Her heart skipped.

Grandmother smiled.

Very quietly.

”Good answer.”

Lin Yue’s cheeks warmed.

”Grandmother.”

”What?”

”Nothing.”

The Creature Returns

The black leaves began moving.

The creature appeared beneath the World-Tree.

This time—

it wore Shen Rui’s face.

”Beautiful.”

Lin Yue stared.

”You learned nothing.”

The creature smiled.

”I learned everything.”

It raised its hand.

Suddenly—

the Golden Space showed Lin Yue visions.

Her father lying injured.

Her mother crying.

Grandmother trapped beneath rubble.

The villages burning.

The fields destroyed.

Children starving.

Shen Rui dead.

Lin Yue fell to her knees.

”No.”

The creature whispered:

”You can prevent all of this.”

Lin Yue trembled.

”How?”

”Give me control.”

The visions intensified.

”Let me manage the resources.”

”Let me decide who receives food.”

”Let me choose which village survives.”

”Let me eliminate uncertainty.”

Lin Yue’s breathing became shallow.

The creature knelt beside her.

”You won’t have to worry anymore.”

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

Then—

she laughed.

The creature stopped.

The Wrong Answer

”You really don’t understand me.”

The creature frowned.

Lin Yue stood.

”You think I want a world without uncertainty?”

She wiped her eyes.

”I don’t.”

The creature stared.

”I want a world where people can face uncertainty together.”

The visions continued.

Lin Yue looked at them.

”I can’t guarantee that my family will never suffer.”

She looked toward the image of Shen Rui.

”I can’t guarantee that everyone I love will always be safe.”

The creature smiled.

”Then you’re accepting their suffering.”

”No.”

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”I’m accepting reality.”

The creature recoiled.

”And reality can be changed.”

She stepped forward.

”But not by surrendering our choices.”

The Golden Leaves

One golden leaf returned.

Then another.

The blackness began retreating.

The creature screamed.

”You don’t understand!”

Lin Yue raised her voice.

”I understand perfectly.”

The Golden Space shook.

”You offer certainty.”

Another golden leaf appeared.

”I choose resilience.”

Another.

”You offer control.”

Another.

”I choose cooperation.”

Another.

”You offer protection without freedom.”

The World-Tree erupted with light.

”I choose love without control.”

The creature screamed.

The First Hunger Revealed

The creature’s face cracked.

Not physically.

Magically.

The image of Lin Yue disappeared.

Then Shen Rui.

Then her mother.

Then Grandmother.

Then hundreds of faces.

Thousands.

Every face belonged to someone who had once been afraid.

Lumi whispered:

”It’s remembering them.”

Lin Yue stared.

”What is it?”

Lumi answered:

”The First Hunger.”

The creature’s voice became layered.

”I was there when the first child cried because there wasn’t enough food.”

Another voice joined.

”I was there when one family hid grain while another starved.”

Another.

”I was there when people learned that taking was safer than sharing.”

Another.

”I was there when fear became survival.”

Lin Yue listened.

For the first time—

she felt something other than anger.

Pity.

The creature noticed.

”You understand.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”I do.”

The First Hunger hesitated.

”You understand me?”

”Yes.”

”Then join me.”

”No.”

The creature’s expression twisted.

”Why?”

”Because understanding something doesn’t mean obeying it.”

The True Enemy

Lin Yue finally understood.

The First Hunger wasn’t simply greed.

It was the ancient memory of deprivation.

Every famine.

Every hoarded resource.

Every betrayal caused by scarcity.

Every desperate decision.

Every person who had ever believed:

If I don’t take it first, I will have nothing.

The creature had grown from those memories.

It had become a force that believed scarcity was the only truth.

Lin Yue looked at it.

”You’ve been trying to prove that people will always choose themselves.”

The creature smiled.

”They do.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”Sometimes.”

The creature’s smile faded.

”But not always.”

The Choice

Lin Yue extended her hand.

Not toward the creature.

Toward the golden roots.

”That’s what you don’t understand.”

She touched the World-Tree.

”People are capable of choosing differently.”

The roots brightened.

”Not perfectly.”

Another pulse.

”Not every time.”

Another.

”But enough times to build something better.”

The First Hunger backed away.

”No.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”You don’t have to disappear.”

The creature stared.

”What?”

”You’re part of survival.”

She continued:

”Hunger tells us when something is wrong.”

The creature trembled.

”Fear tells us danger exists.”

Another golden pulse.

”Scarcity teaches us to prepare.”

Another.

”But you don’t get to decide what people do with those lessons.”

The creature screamed.

The Integration

Lumi flew toward the World-Tree.

”Lin Yue!”

”What?”

”The Golden Space is trying to integrate it.”

”Is that dangerous?”

”Very.”

”How dangerous?”

Lumi hesitated.

”Possibly catastrophic.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Of course.”

Shen Rui appeared beside her.

”What do you need?”

”Everyone.”

”What?”

”Everyone.”

The World Road opened.

Villages appeared.

Farmers.

Teachers.

Children.

Merchants.

Healers.

Craftsmen.

Families.

Thousands of people connected through the Golden Network.

Lin Yue spoke to them.

”The First Hunger is trying to convince us there will never be enough.”

The people listened.

”We can’t prove that tomorrow will be abundant.”

She paused.

”We can’t promise that nobody will suffer.”

The crowd remained silent.

”But we can promise something else.”

She looked around.

”We will learn.”

A golden pulse spread through the network.

”We will prepare.”

Another.

”We will share what we can.”

Another.

”We will tell the truth.”

Another.

”And when something fails...”

Lin Yue smiled.

”We build it again.”

The Golden Response

The black roots began changing.

Not disappearing.

Changing.

Black became dark gold.

Dark gold became amber.

Amber became bright gold.

The First Hunger screamed.

Then—

silence.

The creature collapsed into a small dark seed.

Lin Yue picked it up.

Lumi stared.

”What will you do with it?”

Lin Yue thought.

”Plant it.”

Everyone stared.

Shen Rui sighed.

”Of course you will.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”But not here.”

She placed the seed inside a sealed container.

”We need to understand it first.”

The New Garden

A new section appeared inside the Golden Space.

THE SHADOW GARDEN

Unlike the rest of the Golden Space—

nothing grew there automatically.

Every plant had to be carefully cultivated.

Every change had to be observed.

Every resource had to be documented.

The First Hunger would not be destroyed.

It would be studied.

Contained.

Understood.

And eventually—

perhaps transformed.

Lin Yue looked at the little black seed.

”You’re going to teach us something.”

The seed pulsed once.

Lumi smiled.

”It already has.”

”What?”

Lumi pointed toward the World-Tree.

A new branch had appeared.

ABUNDANCE

Below it:

PREPARATION SHARING RESILIENCE ADAPTATION CHOICE

Lin Yue smiled.

”Not bad.”

The Morning After

The next morning, the black snow disappeared.

The fields thawed.

The rivers returned to normal.

The animals emerged from their shelters.

The village breathed again.

Then Grandmother walked into the greenhouse.

She looked around.

”The tomatoes survived.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Most of them.”

Grandmother nodded.

”Good.”

She picked up one tomato.

”Lunch.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”That’s your first concern?”

Grandmother looked offended.

”After surviving an ancient magical entity?”

She held up the tomato.

”Absolutely.”

The Farm Returns to Life

Within days—

the farm recovered.

Not perfectly.

Some crops had died.

Some equipment had broken.

Several structures needed repair.

But the village had seeds.

Tools.

Knowledge.

People.

Records.

And one another.

They rebuilt.

Again.

And again.

Lin Yue watched the children repair a damaged greenhouse panel.

A farmer taught them.

An engineer corrected them.

The children wrote the process into their notebooks.

Knowledge moved from one generation to another.

That—

Lin Yue realized—

was the real Golden Space.

Not the magic.

Not the crops.

Not the resources.

The ability to continue.

A Cheeky Grandmother

That evening, Grandmother called Lin Yue aside.

”I have something to tell you.”

Lin Yue immediately became suspicious.

”What?”

”I’ve been reviewing the family accounts.”

”That sounds dangerous.”

Grandmother smiled.

”You and Shen Rui have spent a lot of time together.”

Lin Yue’s cheeks turned pink.

”We’re working.”

”Yes.”

”On infrastructure.”

”Yes.”

”Farming.”

”Yes.”

”Emergency planning.”

”Yes.”

Grandmother nodded.

”Very romantic.”

”Grandmother!”

She laughed.

Shen Rui walked past.

Grandmother called:

”Shen Rui!”

He stopped.

”Yes?”

”You’re free tomorrow?”

He glanced at Lin Yue.

”I think so.”

”Excellent.”

Lin Yue narrowed her eyes.

”What are you planning?”

Grandmother smiled innocently.

”Nothing.”

Lin Yue knew that expression.

It meant trouble.

The Next Project

The following morning, Grandmother’s ”nothing” became clear.

A huge wooden sign stood beside the farm.

COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

Lin Yue stared.

”What is this?”

Grandmother smiled.

”Celebration.”

”We just survived a magical catastrophe.”

”Exactly.”

”Shouldn’t we be repairing things?”

”We are.”

”Then why a festival?”

Grandmother pointed toward the villagers.

”Because people need to remember why they are rebuilding.”

Lin Yue looked around.

Children were laughing.

Farmers were cooking.

Craftsmen were setting up stalls.

Merchants were preparing goods.

Musicians were tuning instruments.

Shen Rui was carrying tables.

Lin Yue smiled.

Grandmother whispered:

”Survival without joy is only another kind of hunger.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

For once—

she had no cheeky answer.

The Festival

That night, lanterns filled the village.

There was food.

Music.

Games.

Fresh vegetables.

Preserved fruit.

Handmade tools.

Children’s books.

Local crafts.

New inventions.

Even the squirrel had a stall.

Lin Yue approached it.

”What are you selling?”

The squirrel proudly displayed three jars.

”Compost.”

Lin Yue stared.

”You’re selling compost?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because you taught me.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”How much?”

The squirrel whispered a price.

Lin Yue blinked.

”You’re charging that much?”

The squirrel nodded.

”Premium compost.”

Shen Rui nearly choked laughing.

Under the Lanterns

Later, Lin Yue and Shen Rui walked through the festival.

They passed families eating together.

Children chasing lanterns.

Farmers discussing seeds.

Engineers arguing over bridge designs.

Merchants comparing accounts.

Teachers planning lessons.

Lin Yue smiled.

”This is what we were protecting.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”Yes.”

”Not buildings.”

”No.”

”Not money.”

”No.”

”Not crops.”

”Not exactly.”

She looked at him.

”People.”

He smiled.

”People.”

Lin Yue leaned slightly closer.

”I’m glad you’re here.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”I’m glad you’re here too.”

She smiled.

Then Grandmother shouted from across the festival:

”STOP STANDING SO FAR APART!”

Lin Yue nearly tripped.

Shen Rui covered his face.

The entire family burst into laughter.

Beyond the Festival

Far beyond the farm—

the First Hunger’s remaining shadow stirred.

But it no longer moved alone.

Golden roots surrounded it.

Not imprisoning it.

Connecting it.

The ancient force whispered:

There will still be hunger.

The Golden Space answered:

Then we prepare.

There will still be scarcity.

Then we share.

There will still be fear.

Then we stand together.

The First Hunger became silent.

For the first time—

it had heard an answer it couldn’t consume.

The Next Dawn

Lin Yue woke before sunrise.

She walked through the farm alone.

The fields were recovering.

The greenhouse glowed softly.

The irrigation channels flowed.

The workshop chimneys released thin trails of smoke.

The school doors were open.

The World Road shimmered in the distance.

She touched the soil.

It was alive.

Messy.

Uncertain.

Beautiful.

Lin Yue smiled.

She had arrived in this world with almost nothing.

Now she had:

A farm.

A family.

Friends.

A growing community.

A magical world.

And more problems than she could count.

She laughed softly.

”Perfect.”

A voice came from behind.

”Perfect?”

Shen Rui.

She turned.

”Yes.”

He looked around.

”You call this perfect?”

”No.”

She smiled.

”I call having something worth improving perfect.”

He nodded.

Then held out his hand.

”Come on.”

”Where?”

”Grandmother says breakfast.”

Lin Yue stared.

”She sent you?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

He smiled.

”She said if I didn’t bring you back, she’d send the squirrel.”

Lin Yue immediately took his hand.

”Let’s go.”

They walked toward the farmhouse.

Behind them, the World-Tree shimmered.

And beneath its golden branches—

a tiny black seed began to sprout.

Not a weapon.

Not a curse.

Not yet.

Something new.

Something that might one day teach them the final lesson:

Abundance isn’t the absence of hunger.

It is the ability to make sure hunger never controls you again.
