Chapter 60: Chapter Fifty-Eight: The Forest That Fed Itself

The journey home took five days.

The journey back to the farm took six.

The extra day was entirely the squirrel’s fault.

He had discovered berries.

Then more berries.

Then a particularly large berry bush.

Then—

according to his own explanation—

”an emergency berry opportunity.”

Lin Yue stared at him.

”You disappeared for three hours.”

The squirrel pointed at his backpack.

It was completely full.

Lin Yue sighed.

”You’re lucky they’re edible.”

The squirrel grinned.

Shen Rui shook his head.

”You encourage him.”

Lin Yue looked offended.

”I do not.”

The squirrel immediately climbed onto her shoulder.

Shen Rui raised an eyebrow.

Lin Yue sighed.

”Fine. Maybe a little.”

The Northern Lessons

Once they returned, Lin Yue immediately organized the information gathered from the mountain.

The Keeper Archive was carefully copied.

Not everything.

Some knowledge remained restricted.

But agricultural methods were shared.

Water management.

Terracing.

Soil conservation.

Seed preservation.

Mountain forestry.

Erosion control.

Community storage.

The restored mountain farm became a permanent research station.

Lin Yue appointed a small team to maintain it.

The villagers received training.

The children received notebooks.

The engineers received measurements.

And the accountants—

received an enormous amount of paperwork.

Again.

The chief accountant looked at Lin Yue.

”Do you enjoy giving me work?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Very much.”

He sighed.

A New Problem

The success of the mountain project created an unexpected problem.

People began moving toward it.

Farmers.

Merchants.

Craftsmen.

Families.

They wanted land.

They wanted water.

They wanted opportunity.

Within months, the small mountain settlement was growing.

Lin Yue studied the population records.

Then the land map.

Then the water supply.

Her expression became serious.

”This can’t continue.”

Shen Rui looked over her shoulder.

”Too many people?”

”Not yet.”

She pointed toward the forest.

”But if everyone keeps expanding farmland upward...”

He understood.

”The forest disappears.”

”Yes.”

The Forest Question

The forest beyond the mountain was enormous.

It contained:

Timber.

Wild fruit.

Medicinal plants.

Game.

Water sources.

Wild pollinators.

Fungi.

Fibers.

Resins.

And countless species Lin Yue hadn’t identified.

It also protected the mountain.

Trees held soil.

Roots stabilized slopes.

Leaves slowed rainfall.

Forest litter returned nutrients to the ground.

The forest wasn’t unused land.

It was infrastructure.

Lin Yue wrote the principle at the top of the planning board:

A FOREST IS NOT EMPTY LAND.

Grandmother read it.

”Who thinks forests are empty?”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”People who want to clear them.”

Grandmother nodded.

”Then don’t let them.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Exactly.”

The Deep Forest Expedition

The Forest Keeper site became their next priority.

But Lin Yue refused to approach it as a treasure hunt.

Instead—

she organized a proper ecological survey.

The expedition included:

Botanists.

Farmers.

Healers.

Trackers.

Foresters.

Engineers.

Mapmakers.

Water specialists.

And—

the squirrel.

Lin Yue looked at the roster.

”Why is he on here?”

Shen Rui shrugged.

”He volunteered.”

”He can’t read.”

The squirrel immediately looked offended.

He pointed toward his notebook.

Lin Yue opened it.

Inside were several drawings.

Trees.

Berries.

Mushrooms.

Animal tracks.

Water sources.

And one extremely accurate drawing of a pickle jar.

Lin Yue stared.

”Fine.”

The squirrel grinned.

Forest Rules

Before entering, Lin Yue established strict rules.

NO UNNECESSARY TREE CUTTING. NO UNKNOWN PLANTS TO BE EATEN. NO WASTE. NO UNCONTROLLED FIRES. NO HUNTING WITHOUT PURPOSE. RECORD EVERYTHING. LEAVE WATER SOURCES CLEAN. TAKE ONLY WHAT CAN BE REPLACED.

The children repeated the rules together.

Then the squirrel raised his paw.

”Yes?”

”What about berries?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Only if you identify them correctly.”

The squirrel immediately looked serious.

That was apparently the most important rule.

Into the Deep Forest

The forest began quietly.

Tall trees.

Soft moss.

Filtered sunlight.

Birdsong.

Then—

the trail disappeared.

Lin Yue stopped.

”Everyone stay together.”

Shen Rui looked around.

”There is no trail.”

”Exactly.”

She examined the ground.

Broken twigs.

Pressed leaves.

Old animal tracks.

Water-worn stones.

She pointed.

”We follow the drainage.”

One of the children looked confused.

”How can water show us the way?”

”Water always chooses the easiest route downhill.”

She smiled.

”If we understand the landscape, we can understand where water has been.”

They continued.

The First Discovery

Two hours later, they found a stream.

Clear.

Cold.

Fast-moving.

Lin Yue tested the water.

Temperature.

Clarity.

Flow.

Nearby vegetation.

She examined the banks.

”Healthy.”

The water specialist nodded.

”No obvious contamination.”

Lin Yue smiled.

Then she looked upstream.

”Something is wrong.”

Shen Rui frowned.

”What?”

”There are no fallen branches.”

He stared.

”So?”

”In a natural forest, some branches should have fallen into the stream.”

She pointed.

”The banks are too clean.”

They followed the stream.

The farther they went—

the more artificial it became.

Someone had been clearing it.

The Hidden Settlement

Eventually they found a small settlement.

Wooden houses.

Raised floors.

Rainwater collectors.

Small gardens.

Smokehouses.

Storage sheds.

The people living there froze when they saw the expedition.

An older man stepped forward.

”Who are you?”

Lin Yue introduced herself.

The man looked suspicious.

”Why are you here?”

”We’re looking for the Keeper site.”

Everyone became silent.

Lin Yue immediately noticed.

They knew something.

The Forest People

The settlement had lived in the forest for generations.

They knew which plants were edible.

Which roots were medicinal.

Which trees could be harvested.

Which animals migrated.

Which streams flooded.

Which slopes were dangerous.

Their knowledge was practical.

Generational.

Precise.

Lin Yue was impressed.

Instead of lecturing them—

she asked questions.

”How do you decide which trees to cut?”

The elder answered:

”We never cut the largest trees.”

”Why?”

”They produce seeds.”

”And the smallest?”

”They aren’t mature.”

”What about medium trees?”

”We take only some.”

Lin Yue nodded.

Selective harvesting.

Natural regeneration.

The forest had been managed.

Not abandoned.

The Forest Ledger

The villagers showed Lin Yue their records.

They didn’t use written numbers.

Instead, they used carved sticks.

Each mark represented:

Trees harvested.

Trees planted.

Animals observed.

Water levels.

Storms.

Floods.

Fires.

Harvests.

Lin Yue smiled.

”You have an ecological ledger.”

The elder looked confused.

”What is that?”

”A record of how the forest changes.”

He smiled.

”We simply call it remembering.”

Lin Yue’s expression softened.

”That’s what science does too.”

The Keeper Site

The villagers finally led them deeper into the forest.

The trail became narrower.

The trees became larger.

Eventually—

they reached a clearing.

At its center stood a massive tree.

Its trunk was enormous.

Its roots formed natural arches.

And inside those roots—

was a doorway.

Lumi appeared.

Her expression changed.

”This is it.”

Lin Yue approached.

The tree pulsed.

Golden light moved through its bark.

Then—

a voice whispered:

WHO COMES INTO THE FOREST?

Lin Yue answered:

”Lin Yue.”

Shen Rui stepped beside her.

”Shen Rui.”

The voice asked:

WHY?

Lin Yue looked around.

”To learn.”

The forest became silent.

Then:

GOOD.

The doorway opened.

The Forest Library

Inside the tree was a chamber.

But unlike the mountain archive—

this one was alive.

Shelves were made from roots.

Books were pressed leaves.

Maps were woven from plant fibers.

Seeds were stored inside hollow branches.

Every object carried information.

Lin Yue stared in amazement.

”This is a biological archive.”

The forest Keeper appeared.

Not an old man.

Not an old woman.

A young woman.

Perhaps twenty-five.

Her hair was braided with leaves.

Her clothes were made from woven fibers.

She looked at Lin Yue.

Then at Shen Rui.

Then smiled.

”You’re late.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”Late?”

”I expected you centuries ago.”

The Forest Keeper

The woman introduced herself as Mira.

She was the last active Keeper of the forest.

Or so she believed.

”Why did the others disappear?” Lin Yue asked.

Mira’s expression darkened.

”They tried to make nature obey them.”

Lin Yue immediately understood.

”They overused the Golden Space?”

”No.”

Mira looked toward the roots.

”They overused knowledge.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”How can knowledge be overused?”

”When people believe knowing how something works means they have the right to control it.”

That sentence stayed with Lin Yue.

The Forest’s Secret

Mira led them deeper.

They passed underground pools.

Seed chambers.

Root tunnels.

Small gardens.

Bee colonies.

Mushroom beds.

Medicinal plant gardens.

The forest wasn’t simply wild.

It was self-regulating.

People had learned to cooperate with it.

Mira explained:

”We don’t try to maximize the forest.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”We maintain its resilience.”

”Yes.”

”Different goal.”

”Very.”

The Living Farm

Lin Yue realized something.

Her farm had been designed around production.

The forest had been designed around resilience.

She wrote in her notebook:

FARMING AS PRODUCTION. FORESTRY AS STEWARDSHIP. ECOSYSTEMS AS PARTNERS.

Shen Rui read the notes.

”You’re changing your farming philosophy.”

”Yes.”

”How?”

”We need farms that produce.”

She looked toward the forest.

”But we also need systems that survive failure.”

The Forest Garden

Mira showed them a small clearing.

It contained:

Fruit trees.

Medicinal plants.

Vegetables.

Mushrooms.

Vines.

Root crops.

Nitrogen-fixing plants.

Pollinator flowers.

The system looked chaotic.

But every plant had a role.

Some provided shade.

Some fixed nutrients.

Some attracted insects.

Some repelled pests.

Some produced food.

Some protected soil.

Lin Yue stared.

”This is a food forest.”

Mira smiled.

”Yes.”

Lin Yue immediately began asking questions.

”How long did it take?”

”Generations.”

”What happens if one crop fails?”

”Another produces.”

”What happens during drought?”

”Deep-rooted plants survive.”

”What happens during pests?”

”Predators and diversity help.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Resilience through diversity.”

Mira nodded.

The New Farm Model

Lin Yue knew immediately what she wanted to do.

Not replace conventional farming.

Complement it.

Around the main agricultural fields—

she would establish food forests.

Windbreaks.

Wetlands.

Pollinator corridors.

Tree belts.

Water-retention ponds.

Medicinal gardens.

Mixed orchards.

The farm would no longer be one giant field.

It would become a mosaic.

Different systems supporting one another.

Shen Rui stared at the drawing.

”This is going to be expensive.”

”Yes.”

”Time-consuming.”

”Yes.”

”Complicated.”

”Yes.”

He sighed.

”You look happy.”

”I am.”

The Forest’s Challenge

Mira interrupted.

”You cannot build this everywhere.”

Lin Yue stopped.

”Why?”

”Because every ecosystem is different.”

She pointed toward the forest.

”What works here may fail elsewhere.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Exactly.”

Mira nodded.

”You understand.”

The two women smiled at each other.

For the first time—

Lin Yue felt she had found someone who thought the same way she did.

The Unexpected Rival

Shen Rui watched them.

Mira noticed.

She smiled.

”You’re worried.”

”No.”

”You are.”

”I’m not.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”What is she talking about?”

”Nothing.”

Mira laughed.

”He’s jealous.”

Shen Rui nearly choked.

Lin Yue’s face turned red.

”Ignore her.”

Mira grinned.

”Interesting.”

Lin Yue covered her face.

”Why does everyone do this?”

Lumi floated nearby.

”Because it’s funny.”

Lin Yue stared at her.

”Traitor.”

The Forest’s Emergency

Suddenly—

a loud crack echoed through the trees.

Then another.

Then—

a distant roar.

Mira’s expression changed.

”The northern slope.”

Lin Yue immediately became serious.

”What happened?”

”Storm.”

”How far?”

”Too close.”

The forest began moving.

Wind swept through the canopy.

Leaves spiraled.

Birds fled.

Mira looked toward the village.

”The river will rise.”

Lin Yue grabbed her pack.

”Then we evacuate the lower settlement.”

Mira nodded.

The forest expedition became an emergency operation.

The Storm

Rain fell violently.

The stream became a torrent.

The lower settlement was at risk.

Lin Yue assessed the terrain.

”Move everyone to the ridge.”

”But the path will flood.”

”Then use the old root trail.”

Mira shook her head.

”It’s unstable.”

Lin Yue looked toward the trees.

Then understood.

”Not if we reinforce it.”

The villagers worked together.

Rope lines.

Wooden supports.

Drainage channels.

Temporary barriers.

Children carried small supplies.

Adults moved families.

The engineers stabilized the path.

The forest people guided everyone.

Shen Rui organized the evacuation.

Lin Yue directed the water flow.

Nobody waited for one person to save them.

Everyone contributed.

The Forest Protects Its Own

The storm lasted through the night.

But the settlement survived.

The food forest slowed the runoff.

Tree roots held the slopes.

Wetlands absorbed excess water.

The old drainage channels redirected floodwater.

The carefully maintained forest prevented a disaster.

Lin Yue stood beneath the rain.

She looked at Mira.

”You knew this would happen.”

Mira shook her head.

”No.”

”But you prepared.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”That’s the difference.”

The Forest Gift

At sunrise—

the storm ended.

A golden seed appeared beneath the oldest tree.

Mira picked it up.

”This belongs to you.”

Lin Yue accepted it.

”What does it grow?”

Mira smiled.

”Nothing.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”What?”

”It grows only when you understand what the forest needs.”

Lin Yue stared at the seed.

Then laughed.

”So another impossible plant.”

Mira smiled.

”Probably.”

The Three Seeds

Back at the expedition camp, Lin Yue placed the new seed beside the other two.

Green.

Blue.

Gold.

The three seeds began glowing.

Lumi appeared.

Her face became pale.

”Lin Yue...”

”What?”

”They’re connecting.”

The seeds floated.

Green light.

Blue light.

Gold light.

Then—

a fourth color appeared.

Silver.

The lights merged.

A tiny map appeared in the air.

It showed the three Keeper sites.

Then—

a fourth location appeared.

Not the desert.

Not the forest.

Not the mountain.

Somewhere beneath the farm.

Lin Yue stared.

”That can’t be right.”

Shen Rui looked at the map.

”Why?”

”Because there isn’t supposed to be anything beneath the farm.”

The map pulsed.

A symbol appeared.

THE FIRST GATE.

Lumi whispered:

”The Golden Space isn’t asking you to find the next Keeper anymore.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”What is it asking?”

Lumi’s voice trembled.

”To find where the Keepers began.”

The Last Page

That night, Lin Yue returned to the farm.

Everyone was celebrating the successful forest expedition.

Grandmother had prepared an enormous meal.

The children wanted stories.

The farmers wanted new planting plans.

The engineers wanted forest-management diagrams.

The accountants wanted expense records.

Lin Yue smiled.

Everything was normal.

Almost.

She waited until everyone slept.

Then entered the Golden Space.

The World-Tree stood beneath the stars.

The three Keeper branches glowed.

Mountain.

Forest.

Farm.

But beneath the roots—

something had changed.

A staircase had appeared.

It descended into darkness.

Lin Yue stared.

At the top of the staircase was one inscription:

EVERYTHING YOU HAVE BUILT STANDS ABOVE WHAT YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN.

She took a breath.

Shen Rui appeared beside her.

”You weren’t going down there without me.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”I wasn’t.”

He looked at the staircase.

”How deep?”

”I don’t know.”

”Any idea what’s below?”

”No.”

He nodded.

”Then we should probably bring supplies.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”Of course.”

Behind them—

Lumi whispered:

”Wait.”

They turned.

Lumi looked frightened.

”Don’t take the Golden Space’s resources.”

”Why?”

”Because whatever is below...”

She looked toward the staircase.

”...might be older than the Golden Space itself.”

The staircase trembled.

A faint light appeared far below.

Then—

a voice rose from the darkness.

Not the First Hunger.

Not a Keeper.

Something older.

Something that sounded almost human.

Lin Yue.

She froze.

The voice spoke again.

You have been rebuilding my world.

Silence.

Now come and see what destroyed it.

The final step illuminated.

Lin Yue looked at Shen Rui.

He held out his hand.

She took it.

Together—

they began descending.
