Chapter 68: Chapter Sixty-Six: The Dead Continent

For a long time—

Lin Yue said nothing.

The map floated above the World-Tree.

A vast black region covered the eastern edge of the continent.

Inside it—

millions of golden points waited.

Not moving.

Not disappearing.

Waiting.

Lin Yue finally spoke.

”How long have they been there?”

Lumi lowered her head.

”I don’t know.”

”Thousands of years?”

”Possibly.”

”Then why didn’t anyone find them?”

Lumi looked toward the black region.

”Because nobody was supposed to.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”That isn’t an answer.”

”No.”

Lumi’s voice became quiet.

”It is a warning.”

The Forgotten Place

The Dead Continent had no trade routes.

No official maps.

No recorded settlements.

No known kingdoms.

No historical accounts.

Even the oldest books in the First City contained almost nothing.

One sentence appeared repeatedly:

DO NOT CROSS THE EASTERN SEA.

No explanation.

No reason.

Just the warning.

Lin Yue stared at it.

”Who wrote this?”

Arven shook his head.

”We don’t know.”

”Why did they write it?”

”We don’t know.”

”What happened to anyone who crossed?”

Arven hesitated.

”They never returned.”

Lin Yue closed the book.

”That sounds promising.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”You mean dangerous.”

”I mean extremely dangerous.”

He smiled.

”Better.”

The First Expedition

Lin Yue refused to send a large group.

Instead, she proposed a reconnaissance expedition.

Eight people.

One boat.

Three weeks of supplies.

Water filtration equipment.

Medical supplies.

Seeds.

Emergency tools.

Mapping equipment.

And—

three copies of the network charter.

Shen Rui examined the list.

”Why three?”

”One for us.”

”One for the First City.”

”And one for whoever we find.”

He looked at her.

”You already assume we’ll find someone.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”The map says millions.”

”Maps can be wrong.”

”Yes.”

”But?”

”I prefer preparing for the larger problem.”

The Eastern Sea

They reached the coast six days later.

The sea was strangely calm.

Too calm.

No seabirds.

No fishing boats.

No driftwood.

Even the wind seemed weaker.

The navigator frowned.

”This water is wrong.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”How?”

”No current.”

”That shouldn’t be possible.”

”Exactly.”

Lumi floated above the water.

Her light flickered.

Lin Yue noticed.

”Are you all right?”

Lumi nodded.

Then shook her head.

”I don’t know.”

”What do you feel?”

”Nothing.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Nothing?”

”That’s the problem.”

The Empty Ocean

They sailed.

One day.

Then two.

The sea remained unnaturally still.

On the third morning—

the compass stopped working.

The navigator stared at it.

”That’s impossible.”

Lin Yue examined the needle.

It rotated slowly.

Then stopped.

Pointing backward.

Shen Rui looked behind them.

”Land?”

None.

Only water.

Lin Yue looked at Lumi.

”What’s happening?”

Lumi whispered:

”The continent is pulling the magic away.”

”Why?”

”I don’t know.”

Then—

the sea turned black.

The Boundary

The ship passed through an invisible boundary.

For one moment—

nothing happened.

Then everything changed.

The sky darkened.

The air became colder.

The sea began moving again.

The compass suddenly worked.

The needle pointed east.

Lin Yue looked ahead.

Fog covered the horizon.

Something enormous moved inside it.

The navigator whispered:

”Land.”

Lin Yue stared.

A coastline emerged.

Black cliffs.

Dead forests.

Ruined towers.

And enormous stone structures stretching along the shore.

Shen Rui whispered:

”This isn’t abandoned.”

Lin Yue looked at the towers.

”No.”

She saw lights.

Tiny ones.

Hundreds.

Then thousands.

Someone was living there.

The First Signal

The communication crystal activated.

A voice came through.

”Identify yourselves.”

Lin Yue answered.

”This is the Living Network expedition.”

Silence.

Then:

”Repeat.”

”The Living Network.”

Another silence.

Then the voice became unsteady.

”You actually came.”

Lin Yue looked at Shen Rui.

The voice continued.

”We’ve been waiting for two hundred and twelve years.”

Lin Yue froze.

”Two hundred and twelve?”

”Yes.”

”Who are you?”

The voice answered:

”We are the people of Asterra.”

Asterra

The ship entered the harbor.

The city was enormous.

Much larger than the First City.

But unlike the First City—

Asterra was quiet.

There were buildings everywhere.

Roads.

Bridges.

Factories.

Schools.

Hospitals.

Farms.

Water systems.

Everything appeared functional.

But almost nobody was outside.

Lin Yue stepped onto the dock.

A group of people waited.

Their clothing was practical.

Their faces were tired.

An elderly woman stepped forward.

She looked at Lin Yue.

Then at Lumi.

Her eyes widened.

”The Keeper’s Light.”

Lumi froze.

The woman bowed.

”Finally.”

The Silent People

Lin Yue looked around.

”Where is everyone?”

The woman hesitated.

”Inside.”

”Why?”

”They don’t go outside.”

”Why?”

The woman looked toward the sky.

”Because the Hunger listens.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Listens?”

”Yes.”

”When people gather—”

She lowered her voice.

”When people become hopeful—”

She looked toward the distant hills.

”The Hunger wakes.”

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”So you’ve been hiding.”

”For generations.”

The First Mystery

Lin Yue followed the woman into the city.

Her name was Xing Tera.

She was the current archivist of Asterra.

Lin Yue immediately noticed something unusual.

There were no large food markets.

No public granaries.

No open workshops.

Everything was divided into small units.

Every household grew something.

Every household stored water.

Every household maintained tools.

Every household had a medical kit.

Lin Yue was impressed.

”You’re extremely self-sufficient.”

Mira smiled sadly.

”We had to be.”

”Why?”

”Because centralized systems attract the Hunger.”

Lin Yue stopped.

”Explain.”

Xing Tera pointed toward the city.

”Long ago, we built a magnificent civilization.”

”Then?”

”The Hunger came.”

The First Collapse

Xing Tera showed them the archives.

Paintings covered the walls.

A beautiful ancient city.

Golden towers.

Massive farms.

Great machines.

Millions of people.

Then—

darkness.

The paintings showed:

Empty fields.

Dry rivers.

Black clouds.

People fighting.

Cities burning.

Lin Yue studied them.

”The same pattern.”

Xing Tera nodded.

”Every time civilization became too centralized, the Hunger grew stronger.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”So you dismantled civilization.”

”No.”

Xing Tera shook her head.

”We dismantled dependence.”

The Asterra System

Asterra had created an unusual society.

Every household had:

A garden.

A water reserve.

Basic medical knowledge.

Food storage.

Repair tools.

Seed storage.

Every child learned:

Farming.

First aid.

Basic engineering.

Navigation.

Cooking.

Preservation.

Water purification.

No single profession was considered unnecessary.

No settlement depended entirely on another.

Trade existed—

but survival did not depend upon trade.

Lin Yue stared at the records.

”You built resilience.”

Xing Tera smiled.

”We learned the hard way.”

The Cost

Lin Yue noticed something else.

The system worked.

But it had a cost.

Families had less free time.

Technology developed slowly.

Large projects were difficult.

Transportation was inefficient.

Specialists were rare.

Innovation was cautious.

Lin Yue understood.

”You survived.”

”Yes.”

”But you stopped growing.”

Xing Tera looked down.

”Yes.”

That was the hidden problem.

Asterra had defeated the Hunger—

but only by limiting itself.

The Children

Lin Yue visited a school.

The children were learning survival skills.

A little boy repaired a water filter.

A girl practiced identifying medicinal plants.

Another child calculated grain requirements.

They were capable.

Very capable.

But Lin Yue noticed the books.

They were old.

Very old.

There were almost no new editions.

She asked the teacher:

”When was the last time this curriculum changed?”

The teacher hesitated.

”Forty-three years ago.”

Lin Yue stared.

”Why?”

”We haven’t had enough new information.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then perhaps you do now.”

The Network

Lin Yue opened the communication crystal.

She connected Asterra to the Living Network.

For the first time in centuries—

Asterra could exchange information with the outside world.

The reaction was immediate.

Farmers received new crop varieties.

Doctors received updated medical knowledge.

Engineers received new designs.

Teachers received new textbooks.

Foresters received ecological research.

But Lin Yue added a condition.

”Don’t copy everything.”

Xing Tera frowned.

”Why?”

”Because your system was built for your environment.”

She pointed toward the network.

”You have knowledge we need too.”

Xing Tera smiled.

”So this is an exchange.”

”Exactly.”

The First New Book

The first book Asterra received was not about magic.

It was about soil.

Lin Yue had written it herself.

SOIL IS ALIVE.

It explained:

Composting.

Crop rotation.

Mulching.

Cover crops.

Nitrogen fixation.

Erosion control.

Water retention.

Microbial diversity.

Xing Tera read the first pages.

Then stopped.

”This is new.”

”Yes.”

”We never studied soil biology this way.”

”Then study it.”

Xing Tera smiled.

”You really believe every problem can become a lesson.”

”No.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”I believe every problem can teach us something.”

The Oldest Archive

Xing Tera then showed Lin Yue something else.

A sealed archive.

It had survived for thousands of years.

Inside—

were records from before the Hunger.

Lin Yue entered.

Dust covered everything.

There were maps.

Scientific records.

Agricultural manuals.

Engineering designs.

Historical documents.

Then—

she found a journal.

The title was:

THE FIRST KEEPER.

Lin Yue’s heart skipped.

She opened it.

The first page contained a single sentence.

I DID NOT CREATE THE GOLDEN SPACE.

Lin Yue froze.

Shen Rui leaned closer.

”What?”

She turned the page.

I FOUND IT.

Another page.

IT WAS ALREADY ALIVE.

Another.

AND IT WAS AFRAID.

Lin Yue stared.

”Lumi.”

Lumi didn’t answer.

Lin Yue turned.

Lumi was trembling.

Lumi’s Secret

”Lumi.”

No response.

”Lumi.”

The tiny magical being looked at her.

”I didn’t want you to find this.”

Lin Yue’s voice softened.

”What is it?”

Lumi looked at the journal.

”The Golden Space wasn’t created to give people power.”

”Then why?”

”To protect something.”

”What?”

Lumi’s eyes filled with light.

”Life.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Whose life?”

Lumi whispered:

”Mine.”

Silence.

Shen Rui stared.

Xing Tera stepped backward.

”What does that mean?”

Lumi finally spoke.

”I am not the Golden Space’s assistant.”

Lin Yue’s heart tightened.

”Then what are you?”

Lumi looked at her.

”I am its memory.”

The Memory of the World

The room became silent.

Lumi continued.

”Before the first Keeper, there was another world.”

”What happened?”

”The world died.”

”Because of the Hunger?”

”Yes.”

”Did you survive?”

”No.”

Lin Yue stared.

”What do you mean?”

”I am not the original Lumi.”

She touched her chest.

”I am what remained.”

A fragment.

A memory.

A magical record of a civilization that had disappeared.

The Golden Space had preserved her.

The first Keeper had found her.

And every Keeper after that—

had inherited the memory.

Until eventually—

the chain broke.

And Lin Yue became the first Keeper in generations.

The Truth About the Hunger

Lin Yue looked at the journal.

”Then the Hunger...”

Lumi nodded.

”Was created by the same civilization.”

”To solve scarcity?”

”Yes.”

”They created a magical system that could produce unlimited resources.”

”Yes.”

”And it became the Hunger.”

Lumi lowered her head.

”They tried to remove scarcity.”

Lin Yue whispered:

”And accidentally removed limits.”

The First Keeper’s Failure

The journal continued.

WE THOUGHT ABUNDANCE WOULD CREATE PEACE. IT CREATED DEPENDENCE. WE THOUGHT AUTOMATION WOULD CREATE FREEDOM. IT CREATED FRAGILITY. WE THOUGHT WE COULD REMOVE SUFFERING. WE REMOVED THE ABILITY TO ADAPT.

Lin Yue closed the journal.

The pattern was unmistakable.

The First Civilization had not been destroyed by evil.

It had been destroyed by a solution that became too powerful.

The Final Page

There was one final entry.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS—THE HUNGER HAS RETURNED. DO NOT DESTROY IT.

Lin Yue stared.

The final sentence was underlined.

TEACH THE WORLD TO LIVE WITHOUT IT.

She slowly closed the book.

Shen Rui asked:

”Can we do that?”

Lin Yue looked toward the city.

At the farmers.

The children.

The engineers.

The families.

Then at the network map.

Thousands of communities.

Millions of people.

She smiled.

”We already started.”

Asterra’s Gift

Before they left—

Xing Tera gave Lin Yue a seed.

It was tiny.

Dark green.

Almost black.

”What is it?”

”The First Seed.”

Lin Yue looked surprised.

”Is it magical?”

”No.”

”Then why is it important?”

Xing Tera smiled.

”Because it survived without magic.”

Lin Yue held it carefully.

”That makes it priceless.”

Xing Tera nodded.

”It is our oldest living crop.”

Lin Yue placed it beside the seeds from Sunfall.

Three ordinary seeds.

Different origins.

Different histories.

Different lessons.

She suddenly understood something.

The future wouldn’t be built from one perfect seed.

It would be built from diversity.

The Return

The journey home began.

But before the ship left—

millions of lights appeared across Asterra.

People came outside.

For the first time in generations—

they gathered publicly.

Children waved.

Farmers held seeds.

Teachers held books.

Engineers carried tools.

Families stood together.

Xing Tera watched from the harbor.

Lin Yue looked back.

”What changed?”

Xing Tera smiled.

”Hope.”

Lin Yue nodded.

But Lumi whispered:

”No.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”What?”

”They’re not just hopeful.”

”What are they?”

Lumi looked toward the horizon.

”Connected.”

The Final Message

As the ship crossed the eastern boundary—

the Golden Space activated.

The World-Tree appeared.

Its roots stretched across the map.

The black region of the Dead Continent slowly changed.

Not from black to gold.

From black—

to green.

One settlement.

Then another.

The network was spreading.

Lin Yue smiled.

Then—

a new message appeared.

LIVING NETWORK: 27%

She laughed.

”Twenty-seven percent.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”That’s progress.”

”It is.”

Then another message appeared.

UNKNOWN KEEPER SIGNAL DETECTED.

Lin Yue’s smile disappeared.

”Another Keeper?”

Lumi shook her head.

”No.”

”Then what?”

Lumi stared at the signal.

Her face became pale.

”I don’t know.”

The signal came from beneath the continent.

Not from a city.

Not from a settlement.

Not from the Hunger.

Something else.

A voice entered the Golden Space.

Soft.

Ancient.

Almost human.

Lumi.

She froze.

The voice spoke again.

YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER.

Lin Yue slowly reached for Lumi.

The tiny spirit trembled.

And for the first time since Lin Yue had met her—

Lumi looked truly afraid.
