Chapter 57: Chapter Fifty-Five: The Farm That Remembered

The bell rang again.

Once.

Then silence.

Lin Yue stood in the middle of the ancient terrace, staring at the mountain.

Nobody moved.

Even the birds had stopped singing.

Shen Rui placed one hand near his sword.

”Do you want to go back?”

Lin Yue looked at the abandoned fields.

”No.”

”Of course not.”

She glanced at him.

”You could pretend to be surprised.”

”I’ve known you long enough.”

”That isn’t very romantic.”

”I wasn’t attempting romance.”

Lin Yue’s cheeks warmed.

”Good.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”Disappointed?”

”Absolutely not.”

”Your ears are red.”

”The weather is cold.”

”It’s warm.”

”Then stop observing me.”

He laughed.

Lumi floated between them.

”Are you two finished?”

Lin Yue immediately turned toward the terraces.

”Yes.”

Shen Rui looked amused.

”Apparently.”

The Ancient Terraces

Lin Yue crouched beside the first irrigation channel.

It was made from carefully fitted stones.

No mortar.

No visible cracks.

The channel descended gradually down the mountain.

Not straight.

Curved.

Following the natural slope.

Lin Yue traced the edge with her fingers.

”Whoever built this understood water.”

One engineer knelt beside her.

”How?”

”The gradient.”

She pointed.

”If the slope were too steep, water would erode the channel.”

She pointed farther down.

”If it were too shallow, water would stagnate.”

The engineer examined the stones.

”And they solved both problems.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”They didn’t fight the mountain.”

She looked toward the terraces.

”They worked with it.”

The Forgotten Farming System

The terraces were arranged in layers.

Each level served a different purpose.

Upper terraces collected water.

Middle terraces cultivated crops.

Lower terraces retained moisture.

Overflow channels carried excess water away.

Lin Yue became increasingly excited.

”This isn’t just a farm.”

”What is it?” Shen Rui asked.

”A water-management system.”

She walked from terrace to terrace.

”Every part supports another part.”

The upper fields protect the lower fields.

The channels distribute water.

The walls prevent erosion.

The plants stabilize the soil.

The lower terraces collect nutrients.

The engineer stared.

”It’s an entire mountain ecosystem designed around agriculture.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Exactly.”

The First Clue

They found an old stone tablet beneath a collapsed wall.

Most of the writing had eroded.

But several symbols remained.

A crescent.

A tree.

A river.

A seed.

And—

a golden circle.

Lumi became completely still.

Lin Yue noticed.

”You recognize it.”

Lumi didn’t answer.

”Lumi.”

”I’ve seen the symbol before.”

”Where?”

Lumi looked at Lin Yue.

”Inside your Golden Space.”

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”Where?”

”The oldest chamber.”

The one Lin Yue had never been able to open.

The one hidden beyond the World-Tree.

The one Lumi had always avoided discussing.

Lin Yue slowly stood.

”So this place existed before my space.”

”Yes.”

”And whoever built this knew about it?”

Lumi hesitated.

”I don’t know.”

Lin Yue narrowed her eyes.

”You know something.”

Lumi sighed.

”Maybe.”

”That’s not an answer.”

”It is the safest answer.”

”Lumi.”

”Fine.”

Lumi folded her arms.

”I know that the Golden Space has had other owners.”

Silence.

Shen Rui looked at Lin Yue.

Lin Yue looked at Lumi.

”Other owners?”

Lumi nodded.

”Long before you.”

The First Keeper

Lumi explained carefully.

The Golden Space was not originally an empty magical pocket.

It had once been connected to another world.

A world of ancient forests.

Mountains.

Rivers.

Agricultural settlements.

And people who understood how to work with the land.

”They weren’t simply farmers,” Lumi said.

”They were Keepers.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Keepers of what?”

”Balance.”

The word seemed to echo through the valley.

”They protected water.”

”Seeds.”

”Soil.”

”Forests.”

”Animals.”

”And knowledge.”

Lin Yue looked toward the terraces.

”So these people built this?”

”Yes.”

”Then what happened to them?”

Lumi looked away.

”I don’t know.”

Lin Yue immediately noticed.

”You do.”

”I know only part of it.”

”Tell me.”

Lumi hesitated.

”They disappeared.”

Not Abandoned

Lin Yue studied the terraces again.

”Then why does everything look so well maintained?”

Shen Rui crouched beside one of the irrigation channels.

”She’s right.”

He pointed.

There was no thick moss.

No deep tree roots.

No major collapse.

The system had been abandoned—

but not for long.

Lin Yue touched the soil.

”Someone has been maintaining it.”

The expedition became silent.

One farmer whispered:

”Then we’re not alone.”

Footprints

They found footprints near the upper reservoir.

Human.

Barefoot.

Small.

Fresh.

Lin Yue crouched.

”Less than a day old.”

Shen Rui immediately looked around.

”Everyone stay together.”

Lin Yue nodded.

The expedition moved cautiously.

The trail led upward.

Past the terraces.

Through a narrow forest.

Toward the mountain.

They found another bell.

An old bronze bell hanging from a wooden frame.

It was impossible to tell who had rung it.

Lin Yue examined the rope.

Fresh fibers.

Recently repaired.

Someone was here.

The Mountain Shelter

Behind a waterfall—

they found a doorway.

Stone.

Circular.

The same golden symbol appeared above it.

Lin Yue stared.

”That’s the same symbol.”

Lumi nodded.

Shen Rui examined the door.

”Can it be opened?”

Lin Yue placed her hand against it.

Nothing happened.

Then—

the Golden Space responded.

The symbol glowed.

The door opened.

Everyone stepped backward.

Lin Yue stared into the darkness.

Shen Rui moved beside her.

”I’ll go first.”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because I know magical doors better than you.”

”That is not reassuring.”

”It wasn’t supposed to be.”

She stepped inside.

The Hidden Archive

The chamber wasn’t a treasure room.

There was no gold.

No jewels.

No weapons.

Instead—

there were shelves.

Hundreds of them.

Clay tablets.

Wooden boards.

Pressed leaves.

Seeds.

Maps.

Diagrams.

Agricultural records.

Weather observations.

Water tables.

Forest maps.

Animal tracks.

Medicinal plants.

Construction designs.

Engineering diagrams.

Accounting records.

Even children’s drawings.

Lin Yue stopped breathing.

”This...”

Shen Rui looked around.

”What?”

”It’s a library.”

Lumi whispered:

”It’s the Keeper Archive.”

The Knowledge of the Keepers

Lin Yue carefully examined the shelves.

The Keepers had recorded everything.

How to prevent soil erosion.

How to construct terraces.

How to rotate crops.

How to preserve seeds.

How to store grain.

How to manage forests.

How to collect rainwater.

How to build canals.

How to maintain bridges.

How to construct simple machines.

How to calculate harvest yields.

How to organize community labor.

How to distribute food during shortages.

How to record expenses.

How to teach children.

Lin Yue’s eyes shone.

She had spent years studying books.

She had memorized countless systems.

But this—

was knowledge developed by people who had actually lived through centuries of environmental change.

She whispered:

”This is priceless.”

The Accounting Room

They discovered another chamber.

Rows of wooden tablets covered its walls.

Numbers.

Names.

Quantities.

Dates.

Transactions.

Lin Yue stared.

”This is accounting.”

Shen Rui looked confused.

”Why would farmers need so many records?”

”Because large communities can’t function on memory.”

She pointed.

”This tracks grain.”

Another tablet.

”Labor.”

Another.

”Tools.”

Another.

”Water rights.”

She smiled.

”They understood something important.”

”What?”

”Trust needs records.”

The Water Ledger

The most remarkable document was the Water Ledger.

It showed every household.

How much water they received.

How much land they cultivated.

How much labor they contributed.

During drought years—

water allocations changed.

During floods—

emergency work increased.

During abundant years—

surplus was stored.

Lin Yue read the final entry.

Then stopped.

Shen Rui noticed.

”What?”

She handed him the tablet.

The final line said:

THE MOUNTAIN HAS BEGUN TO FORGET.

Below it—

THE FIRST HUNGER HAS AWAKENED.

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”They knew.”

The Beginning of the Hunger

Lumi floated quietly.

Lin Yue turned toward her.

”You knew this.”

Lumi shook her head.

”Not all of it.”

”You knew the First Hunger existed.”

”Yes.”

”And you knew the Keepers.”

”Yes.”

”Why didn’t you tell me?”

Lumi looked sad.

”Because I wasn’t sure you were ready.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”You should stop deciding what I’m ready for.”

Lumi lowered her head.

”I know.”

Lin Yue softened.

”I forgive you.”

Lumi looked up.

”Really?”

”Yes.”

”Even though I hid something important?”

”Yes.”

Lumi smiled.

”But if you hide anything else—”

”I won’t.”

”Good.”

The Last Keeper

A sound came from the doorway.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stood there.

She carried a walking stick.

Her hair was white.

Her clothes were simple.

Her eyes were sharp.

She looked at Lin Yue.

Then Lumi.

Then the Golden Space symbol.

”You finally came.”

Lin Yue froze.

”You know me?”

The woman smiled.

”I know the Golden Space.”

She looked toward the ancient archive.

”And I have been waiting for its next Keeper.”

The Question

Lin Yue stepped forward.

”What happened to the others?”

The old woman looked toward the shelves.

”They chose differently.”

”Differently how?”

”Some wanted to preserve everything.”

She shook her head.

”Some wanted to control everything.”

”And others?”

”Some wanted to destroy the Hunger.”

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”What happened?”

”They all failed.”

Shen Rui asked:

”Why?”

The old woman looked directly at him.

”Because they thought survival meant winning.”

She turned back to Lin Yue.

”Your predecessor learned too late.”

”What did they learn?”

The woman smiled.

”Survival is not a victory.”

”It is a practice.”

The Keeper’s Test

The old woman raised her hand.

The chamber changed.

The shelves disappeared.

The mountain vanished.

Lin Yue found herself standing in the middle of a barren field.

No crops.

No water.

No tools.

No shelter.

Nothing.

Shen Rui was gone.

Lumi was gone.

Her family was gone.

Only Lin Yue remained.

A voice echoed:

BUILD.

She looked around.

No instructions.

No magic.

No supplies.

Just earth.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Fine.”

Step One: Water

She studied the terrain.

A shallow depression.

Possible groundwater.

She looked for vegetation.

Certain plants suggested moisture.

She dug.

Nothing.

She moved twenty meters.

Dug again.

Damp soil.

She dug deeper.

Water appeared.

Not much.

But enough.

She created a small collection pit.

Then improved it.

Step Two: Shelter

She found fallen branches.

Leaves.

Bark.

Stone.

She built a simple shelter.

Low profile.

Wind-resistant.

Drainage trench around it.

Raised sleeping platform.

Smoke outlet.

Not comfortable.

But functional.

Lin Yue nodded.

”Good enough.”

Step Three: Food

She identified edible plants.

Carefully.

She avoided unknown species.

She found roots.

Insects.

Small fruits.

Seeds.

She constructed a simple trap.

Then waited.

Eventually—

something moved.

Lin Yue smiled.

Dinner.

Step Four: Farming

Once water and shelter were secure—

she began cultivating.

She selected seeds.

Prepared soil.

Created compost.

Built raised beds.

Designed drainage.

Planned crop rotation.

She didn’t simply plant.

She created a system.

The barren field slowly changed.

Green appeared.

Then more.

Then rows.

Then trees.

Then ponds.

Then terraces.

Step Five: Community

But nobody came.

Lin Yue frowned.

The field was thriving.

Yet it felt empty.

Then she understood the test.

She couldn’t build a sustainable world alone.

She needed people.

The illusion changed.

Villagers appeared.

Hungry.

Frightened.

Suspicious.

Lin Yue looked at them.

”Welcome.”

One man asked:

”What do you want from us?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Nothing.”

”What?”

”I want to build something with you.”

The Test’s Final Question

The old woman’s voice returned.

WHAT WILL YOU DO WHEN THERE IS NOT ENOUGH?

Lin Yue looked at the villagers.

She remembered the First Hunger.

She remembered the black snow.

She remembered the ancient records.

She remembered her own family.

Then she answered:

”We measure.”

The field brightened.

”We plan.”

Another pulse.

”We conserve.”

Another.

”We diversify.”

Another.

”We share what we can.”

Another.

”And we make sure nobody has to face scarcity alone.”

The illusion shattered.

Back in the Archive

Lin Yue opened her eyes.

She was back in the chamber.

Shen Rui stood beside her.

Lumi hovered nearby.

The old woman smiled.

”You passed.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”What was the test?”

The woman shook her head.

”There was no test.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”What?”

”It was a question.”

”What question?”

The old woman looked toward the ancient terraces.

”Whether you would build a farm...”

She smiled.

”...or build a civilization.”

Lin Yue was silent.

Then—

she laughed.

”That sounds like an enormous amount of work.”

The old woman laughed.

”Yes.”

Shen Rui sighed.

”I was afraid you would say that.”

The Keeper’s Gift

The old woman gave Lin Yue a small wooden box.

Inside was one seed.

It looked ordinary.

Brown.

Small.

Dry.

Lin Yue examined it.

”What is it?”

”The first seed.”

”The first?”

”The seed from which the original Golden Space grew.”

Lin Yue stared.

”You’re giving me this?”

”No.”

The woman smiled.

”I’m returning it.”

Lin Yue’s fingers tightened around the box.

”To whom?”

”To the Keeper.”

The old woman stepped backward.

Her body began glowing.

Lin Yue rushed forward.

”Wait!”

The woman smiled.

”Grow carefully.”

Then—

she disappeared.

The Bell

Far outside the chamber—

the mountain bell rang.

Once.

The terraces lit up.

Water began flowing through ancient channels.

The abandoned fields turned green.

Seeds sprouted.

Trees awakened.

The entire mountain seemed to breathe.

Lin Yue looked around in amazement.

Shen Rui smiled.

”I think it likes you.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”I think it was waiting.”

A New Responsibility

Back at the farm, Lin Yue placed the ancient seed in the Golden Seed Library.

She didn’t plant it.

Not yet.

Instead, she wrote a label.

ORIGIN SEED. DO NOT PLANT UNTIL CONDITIONS ARE UNDERSTOOD.

Shen Rui looked at the label.

”You’re actually resisting the temptation.”

”I’ve learned.”

He smiled.

”I’m proud of you.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”You’re getting dangerously sweet.”

”Should I stop?”

She shook her head.

”No.”

He smiled.

The New Map

That evening, Lin Yue spread the expedition map across the table.

The mountain was only the beginning.

Beyond it—

the Golden Space contained forests.

Rivers.

Valleys.

Deserts.

Wetlands.

Unknown ecosystems.

And somewhere beyond all of them—

the remnants of the Keepers.

Or whatever had become of them.

Lin Yue placed a marker on the mountain.

Then another.

Shen Rui stared at the growing map.

”How long do you think this will take?”

Lin Yue considered.

”A lifetime.”

He nodded.

”Then we’d better start tomorrow.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Tomorrow.”

The Last Discovery

Just before sleeping—

Lumi woke Lin Yue.

”Lin Yue.”

She opened one eye.

”What?”

”You should see this.”

They entered the Golden Space.

The World-Tree stood beneath the stars.

Its newest branch had grown.

Lin Yue read the inscription.

KEEPER NETWORK RESTORED.

Below it—

THREE OTHER NODES DETECTED.

Lin Yue froze.

”Three?”

Lumi nodded.

”Three surviving Keeper sites.”

”Where?”

Lumi pointed toward the enormous map.

One was beyond the northern mountains.

One beneath a great forest.

And one—

far across the desert.

Lin Yue stared.

The Golden Space was no longer simply a farm.

It was a forgotten world waiting to be rediscovered.

And somewhere in that world—

three other Keepers might still be alive.

Or perhaps something else had inherited their knowledge.

Lin Yue smiled.

She had a farm to improve.

A family to protect.

A community to develop.

A magical world to understand.

And now—

three mysteries waiting beyond the horizon.

She pulled the blanket over herself.

”Tomorrow.”

Lumi smiled.

”Tomorrow.”

From outside the farmhouse came a loud crash.

Then Grandmother’s voice:

”WHO LEFT THE PICKLE JARS ON THE STAIRS?”

Lin Yue sat upright.

Shen Rui groaned from the next room.

Lumi giggled.

The ancient mysteries could wait until morning.

Apparently—

the pickle crisis could not.
