Chapter 54: Chapter Fifty-Two: Farming Beneath a Black Sky

The first black snowflake landed on Lin Yue’s palm.

It melted instantly.

Then another fell.

And another.

Within minutes, the entire farm was covered in a thin layer of dark frost.

Lin Yue stared at the fields.

”Don’t touch it.”

The farmers stopped.

One man had already reached toward a cabbage.

”Why?”

”I don’t know what it is.”

That answer frightened everyone more than if she had said it was poisonous.

Lin Yue immediately began issuing instructions.

”Everyone away from the fields.”

The farmers obeyed.

”Close the greenhouse.”

”Cover the seed storage.”

”Bring the livestock indoors.”

”Don’t drink from open water.”

”Collect samples only with gloves.”

The village moved.

Not perfectly.

But quickly.

Because they had practiced.

The First Test

Lin Yue entered the Golden Space laboratory.

It wasn’t really a laboratory.

Not yet.

It was one room containing:

Glass containers.

Balances.

Thermometers.

Magnifying lenses.

Simple filters.

Measuring equipment.

And dozens of notebooks.

She placed the black snow into a sealed glass jar.

It didn’t behave like ordinary snow.

Instead of melting into water—

it slowly evaporated.

Lin Yue frowned.

”Interesting.”

Shen Rui leaned closer.

”Is that good?”

”No.”

He immediately leaned back.

”Very reassuring.”

Lin Yue ignored him.

She measured temperature.

Mass.

Moisture.

Rate of evaporation.

Residue.

The black material left behind was extremely fine.

Almost like ash.

But it wasn’t ash.

She examined it under magnification.

Tiny crystalline structures glittered inside.

”Magic?”

Lumi floated beside her.

”Not exactly.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”Then what?”

”Adaptation.”

The Golden Space Changes

The floor beneath them trembled.

A section of soil rose.

Lin Yue stepped backward.

”What is it doing?”

A small seed appeared from beneath the earth.

It was unfamiliar.

Dark blue.

Almost black.

A faint golden line ran through its center.

Lin Yue stared.

”That’s not one of our seeds.”

”No.”

Lumi looked worried.

”It made itself.”

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

”That’s impossible.”

Lumi smiled faintly.

”Your Golden Space has never been very interested in the word impossible.”

The Seed

Lin Yue carefully examined it.

Shape.

Weight.

Texture.

Shell structure.

Moisture.

She compared it against every seed record in the Golden Library.

Nothing matched.

It wasn’t rice.

Not wheat.

Not corn.

Not a bean.

Not any crop she recognized.

She placed it in a small tray.

”What happens if we plant it?”

Shen Rui stared.

”You want to plant the mysterious magical seed?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because we need to know what it does.”

”Perhaps we should test it somewhere isolated first.”

Lin Yue paused.

Then smiled.

”You’re learning.”

”I’ve been trying to learn.”

She pointed toward a small experimental plot.

”Fine. One seed.”

Experimental Plot

The seed went into the soil.

Nothing happened.

Ten minutes.

Nothing.

One hour.

Nothing.

Three hours.

Still nothing.

Shen Rui yawned.

Lin Yue glared.

”Don’t fall asleep.”

”I wasn’t.”

”You were.”

”I was thinking.”

”With your eyes closed?”

”Efficient thinking.”

Lin Yue rolled her eyes.

Then—

the soil moved.

A tiny green shoot emerged.

Everyone froze.

The shoot grew.

One finger.

Two.

Three.

Then stopped.

Lin Yue approached.

The plant had dark green leaves with silver veins.

She touched nothing.

Instead, she recorded everything.

Temperature.

Soil moisture.

Growth rate.

Leaf structure.

Color.

Response to light.

The plant remained still.

Then the black snow began falling again.

A flake landed on one leaf.

The leaf absorbed it.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

”Everyone back.”

The plant changed.

The silver veins began glowing.

Its leaves widened.

The stem thickened.

Within minutes, the plant looked stronger.

Shen Rui stared.

”It ate the snow.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”No.”

She examined the leaf.

”It converted it.”

The First Adaptation

Lin Yue finally understood.

The Golden Space wasn’t merely producing a magical crop.

It was responding to the environmental threat.

The plant had adapted to the black snow.

She whispered:

”The ecosystem is learning.”

Lumi nodded.

”That’s why the Golden Space changed.”

Lin Yue looked at the frozen fields.

”It’s trying to survive.”

Not a Weapon

The elders immediately asked whether the new plant could be used as a weapon.

Lin Yue refused.

”We don’t know enough.”

”But if it can absorb the black snow—”

”We don’t know what it becomes afterward.”

She pointed toward the plant.

”It may help.”

She paused.

”Or it may accumulate something dangerous.”

The healers nodded.

This was exactly why Lin Yue insisted on testing before distributing anything.

Magic didn’t remove the need for caution.

If anything—

it increased it.

The Farm Becomes a Research Station

Lin Yue divided the fields.

Plot A

Normal crops.

Plot B

Black-snow exposure.

Plot C

New adaptive plant.

Plot D

Mixed planting.

Plot E

Protected greenhouse.

Plot F

Unplanted control soil.

Every plot received measurements.

The children were delighted.

They were given notebooks.

”Write everything down.”

A little girl looked at her page.

”What should I write?”

”Everything you observe.”

The girl looked around.

”Everything?”

Lin Yue nodded.

The girl immediately wrote:

Shen Rui looked worried.

Lin Yue covered her mouth.

Shen Rui looked offended.

”Why am I in the experiment?”

The girl answered seriously:

”Observation.”

The entire group laughed.

Water

The next problem was water.

Black snow was falling into the streams.

Lin Yue immediately stopped everyone from drinking untreated water.

The village collected water from protected wells.

Then they tested it.

Filtration became the priority.

The engineers constructed layered filters.

Gravel.

Sand.

Charcoal.

Cloth.

Then additional treatment.

Lin Yue explained:

”Filtering removes particles.”

A healer asked:

”What about things we cannot see?”

”That’s why filtration isn’t automatically enough.”

She emphasized testing and safe treatment.

”Clear water isn’t necessarily safe water.”

The village took the lesson seriously.

The Water Reserve

The old water storage system wasn’t large enough.

Lin Yue called the engineers.

”How much water do we need?”

They calculated household use.

Livestock.

Cooking.

Cleaning.

Medical needs.

Emergency reserves.

Fire protection.

Then Lin Yue added one more category.

”Backup.”

The engineer sighed.

”Of course.”

They expanded the water storage.

Not one giant tank.

Several smaller reservoirs.

If one became contaminated—

the others remained available.

Again, redundancy.

The Greenhouse

The greenhouse became the farm’s most important building.

The black snow accumulated on the roof.

The plants inside remained warm.

But the temperature was dropping.

Lin Yue inspected the structure.

”We need thermal mass.”

The engineers stared.

She pointed toward large containers.

”Water.”

The barrels absorbed heat during the day and released it slowly at night.

They also added:

Insulated walls.

Double-layer coverings.

Wind protection.

Ventilation controls.

Raised planting beds.

Emergency heating.

The greenhouse became warmer.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

The Wilderness Lesson

Lin Yue had spent years learning survival in harsh environments.

The lesson was always the same.

You didn’t survive by defeating nature.

You survived by understanding it.

Observe.

Adapt.

Conserve energy.

Protect water.

Maintain shelter.

Manage food.

Avoid unnecessary exposure.

Plan for failure.

Use what is available.

And never assume yesterday’s conditions will continue tomorrow.

She looked at the black sky.

The Golden Space was forcing the entire community to remember those lessons.

The Livestock Problem

The chickens refused to enter the shelter.

Lin Yue stood in the snow.

”Come on.”

The chickens ignored her.

”Please.”

Nothing.

Shen Rui watched from the doorway.

”You can negotiate with magical forests.”

Lin Yue glared.

”Yes.”

”But not chickens.”

”No.”

A chicken strutted past her.

Lin Yue crouched.

”Listen.”

The chicken clucked.

”I have food.”

The chicken stopped.

Shen Rui whispered:

”She has found the secret.”

Lin Yue scattered grain.

The entire flock immediately entered the shelter.

She stood.

”Leadership.”

Shen Rui nodded solemnly.

”Obviously.”

Family Dinner

That night, the entire household gathered.

The weather had made everyone uneasy.

Grandmother served soup.

”Eat.”

Lin Yue looked into the bowl.

”What’s this?”

”Vegetables.”

”From where?”

”The greenhouse.”

Lin Yue froze.

”They survived?”

Grandmother smiled.

”Of course.”

Lin Yue took a bite.

It tasted ordinary.

That was wonderful.

Ordinary food had suddenly become precious.

Her mother quietly placed another bowl beside her.

”You need to eat.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”I know.”

Her father added:

”And sleep.”

”I know.”

Grandmother frowned.

”You don’t know.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Fine.”

She ate another spoonful.

The Family Rule

Grandmother pointed her spoon at everyone.

”During a crisis, nobody works alone.”

Lin Yue opened her mouth.

Grandmother pointed harder.

”Especially you.”

Lin Yue closed it.

Shen Rui looked amused.

Grandmother continued.

”Everyone gets rest.”

The household agreed.

Even Lin Yue.

Reluctantly.

A Small Romance

Later, Lin Yue stepped outside.

The snow had stopped.

Shen Rui followed.

”You should be sleeping.”

”So should you.”

”I was checking the fields.”

”I was checking you.”

She looked at him.

”That sounded suspiciously romantic.”

He smiled.

”Was it?”

Lin Yue’s cheeks warmed.

”Maybe.”

They stood quietly beneath the dark sky.

Shen Rui handed her a cup of warm tea.

She accepted it.

”Thank you.”

”You’re welcome.”

She leaned against him.

”Don’t get used to this.”

”Too late.”

She laughed softly.

The First Greenhouse Harvest

Three days later—

the adaptive plant produced fruit.

It was round.

Silver-blue.

And faintly glowing.

Everyone gathered.

Lin Yue stared.

”What does it do?”

Lumi floated closer.

”I don’t know.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Good.”

Shen Rui looked confused.

”Why is that good?”

”Because now we get to learn.”

She cut the fruit open.

Inside were golden seeds.

Dozens of them.

Lin Yue immediately stopped.

”One fruit gives us dozens of seeds.”

The farmers stared.

If the plant remained stable—

they had discovered a potentially important crop.

But Lin Yue wasn’t celebrating yet.

She carefully stored the seeds.

”Test first.”

The Experiment

One seed went into ordinary soil.

One into frozen soil.

One into black-snow-treated soil.

One into compost-rich soil.

One into poor soil.

One received minimal water.

One received normal water.

One received excessive water.

The children recorded everything.

The adults watched.

The Golden Space watched.

This was no longer ordinary farming.

It was adaptation through observation.

The Results

The first seed grew slowly.

The second died.

The third grew rapidly.

The fourth grew moderately.

The fifth barely survived.

The sixth survived drought.

The seventh developed root rot.

Lin Yue recorded everything.

Then she saw something interesting.

The third plant—

the one exposed to black-snow-treated soil—

grew strongest.

She frowned.

”Why?”

She examined the roots.

They were different.

Longer.

Thicker.

More branching.

She looked at the soil.

Then at the black residue.

Then at the plant.

”The soil changed.”

The engineers gathered around.

”Can we reproduce it?”

”Maybe.”

The Soil Laboratory

The next phase began.

Different soil samples were mixed.

Different compost levels.

Different minerals.

Different moisture levels.

Different exposure periods.

The farmers became soil scientists.

The children became enthusiastic assistants.

The engineers built simple measuring tools.

The accountants tracked resources.

The printers produced experiment sheets.

The entire village participated.

The line between education and production disappeared.

Learning had become part of everyday life.

The First Discovery

After several weeks—

Lin Yue found something extraordinary.

The black snow did not simply damage the soil.

In controlled quantities—

it altered certain minerals.

The adaptive plant could use those minerals.

That meant the plant wasn’t magically eating poison.

It was exploiting an environmental change.

Lin Yue stared at the results.

”The First Hunger changed the environment.”

She looked toward Lumi.

”And the Golden Space changed in response.”

Lumi nodded.

”Adaptation.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then the battle isn’t about stopping change.”

She looked toward the greenhouse.

”It’s about adapting faster than the threat.”

A New Farming Philosophy

The village adopted a new principle.

NEVER BUILD ONLY FOR TODAY’S CONDITIONS.

Farmers began asking:

What if rainfall changes?

What if temperature rises?

What if pests appear?

What if one crop fails?

What if water becomes contaminated?

What if roads disappear?

What if trade stops?

What if the soil changes?

What if the magical environment changes?

The farms became more diverse.

Greenhouses expanded.

Seed banks multiplied.

Water storage increased.

Food preservation improved.

The villages began planning not merely for abundance—

but for uncertainty.

The First Hunger’s Response

The black roots beneath the Golden Space trembled.

The First Hunger had expected destruction.

Instead—

the humans had adapted.

The more it changed—

the more they learned.

The more they learned—

the stronger their systems became.

For the first time—

the ancient force became uncertain.

Then it tried something new.

The sky turned completely black.

No moon.

No stars.

No wind.

No snow.

Nothing.

Silence.

Lin Yue stepped outside.

Every animal became restless.

Lumi appeared beside her.

”Something is coming.”

Lin Yue stared into the darkness.

”What?”

Lumi shook her head.

”I don’t know.”

Lin Yue smiled faintly.

”Then we’ll observe.”

A sound came from the forest.

One step.

Then another.

Slow.

Heavy.

Something was approaching the farm.

The guards raised their weapons.

Shen Rui stood beside Lin Yue.

The footsteps stopped.

A figure emerged from the darkness.

Lin Yue recognized him.

Her father.

But her father was standing behind her.

She turned.

He was still there.

The figure smiled.

It had her father’s face.

Then it spoke.

”Lin Yue.”

Her blood ran cold.

The creature raised its hand.

”Come with me.”

Lin Yue stared.

Shen Rui stepped forward.

”Don’t.”

The creature smiled.

”You said love was your strength.”

Its face changed.

Her mother’s.

Then Grandmother’s.

Then Shen Rui’s.

Finally—

Lin Yue’s own face.

The creature whispered:

”Let’s see how strong you are...”

The Golden Space shook violently.

And every golden leaf on the World-Tree turned black.
