Chapter 74: Chapter Seventy-Two: The Promise Beneath the Moon

09:58:41

The numbers continued falling.

Lin Yue stared at the countdown.

Nine hours.

Fifty-eight minutes.

Forty-one seconds.

Somewhere above them, ancient machines were awakening.

Somewhere beyond the eastern horizon—

someone had used LUMA’s identity.

And someone had declared themselves Keeper.

Shen Rui stood beside Lin Yue.

”When do we leave?”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”You don’t have to.”

”I know.”

”Then why are you asking?”

”Because I’m going.”

She sighed.

”You’re impossible.”

”You’ve known that for years.”

”That is unfortunately true.”

He smiled.

Then his expression softened.

”Besides, where else would I be?”

Lin Yue didn’t answer.

Because she already knew.

The Road East

They left before dawn.

Lumi traveled with them.

Aster remained connected through a portable crystal communicator.

The first stage of the journey was easy.

The Golden Space provided food.

Water.

Shelter.

Maps.

But beyond its boundaries—

the world became uncertain again.

They traveled through restored farmland.

Villages that had once been abandoned were now beginning to recover.

Children played beside newly repaired irrigation channels.

Farmers exchanged seeds.

Workshops rang with the sound of hammers.

Everywhere Lin Yue looked—

she saw something she had helped begin.

She smiled.

Then Shen Rui noticed.

”You’re happy.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because this is what all the trouble was for.”

He looked at the villages.

”Not the Golden Space?”

”No.”

”The technology?”

”No.”

”Not even the ancient archives?”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”The people.”

She looked at him.

”That’s what matters.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”I thought so.”

The Village at Dusk

By evening, they reached a small farming village.

The villagers recognized Lin Yue immediately.

”Lady Lin!”

”She’s here!”

”Lady Lin has come!”

They gathered around her.

A farmer brought fresh vegetables.

Another brought eggs.

A little girl offered Lin Yue a crooked flower.

Lin Yue accepted it carefully.

”Thank you.”

The child smiled.

”Are you going somewhere?”

Lin Yue hesitated.

”Yes.”

”Will you come back?”

The question caught her off guard.

She looked at the child’s hopeful face.

”Yes.”

The little girl smiled.

”Promise?”

Lin Yue nodded.

”I promise.”

Shen Rui watched silently.

Later, when they left the village—

he said:

”You shouldn’t make promises you aren’t certain you can keep.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”I know.”

”Then why did you?”

”Because she needed to hear it.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”That sounds like you.”

Lin Yue looked ahead.

”Is that a compliment?”

”Yes.”

”Then I’ll accept it.”

The Mountain Pass

They reached the mountain pass after sunset.

A storm was approaching.

Lumi checked the weather.

”We should stop.”

Lin Yue nodded.

They found an abandoned watchtower.

Shen Rui inspected the structure.

”It will hold.”

Lin Yue began preparing dinner.

”You always say that.”

”Because I’m usually right.”

”You’re occasionally right.”

”More often than you.”

She looked at him.

”Would you like to cook?”

He immediately stepped back.

”No.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”You admit defeat?”

”I respect the safety of the traveling party.”

She laughed again.

For a moment—

there was no ancient intelligence.

No countdown.

No threat.

Just the two of them arguing over dinner.

And somehow—

that ordinary moment felt more precious than anything else.

Beneath the Rain

The storm arrived.

Rain hammered the roof.

Thunder rolled across the mountains.

Lin Yue sat near the window.

Shen Rui brought her a blanket.

”You’re cold.”

”I’m fine.”

”You’re shivering.”

”I am not.”

He placed the blanket around her anyway.

She looked at him.

”You’ve become bossy.”

”You’ve become stubborn.”

”I’ve always been stubborn.”

”I know.”

He sat beside her.

Neither spoke for several moments.

Then Lin Yue said:

”Shen Rui.”

”Yes?”

”If something happens tomorrow...”

He interrupted.

”No.”

She frowned.

”I haven’t finished.”

”I know what you’re going to say.”

”What?”

”That if something happens, I should protect everyone else.”

Lin Yue stared at him.

”You know me too well.”

”Yes.”

His voice was quiet.

”That’s exactly why I’m saying no.”

The Truth Between Them

Lin Yue looked at him.

”You can’t protect everyone.”

”I know.”

”Then why?”

”Because I can protect you.”

She froze.

Shen Rui looked away.

”I don’t mean because you’re weak.”

”I know.”

”You’re probably the most stubborn person I’ve ever met.”

”Probably?”

He smiled.

”Definitely.”

She laughed softly.

Then he became serious.

”But you’re always thinking about everyone else.”

He looked directly at her.

”Who thinks about you?”

Lin Yue couldn’t answer.

He continued.

”You carry every problem as though it belongs to you.”

”Someone has to.”

”No.”

His voice was gentle.

”Not anymore.”

The Confession

Lin Yue’s heart beat faster.

”Shen Rui...”

”I don’t want to be beside you because our families expect it.”

She became still.

”I don’t want to follow you because of duty.”

He took a breath.

”I want to be beside you because I choose you.”

The storm continued outside.

But Lin Yue barely heard it.

”Why?”

His answer was immediate.

”Because when you’re happy, I want to see it.”

He paused.

”When you’re tired, I want to help.”

”When you’re frightened, I want to stay.”

”When you succeed, I want to celebrate with you.”

”And when you fail...”

He smiled.

”I want to be there when you try again.”

Lin Yue’s eyes became warm.

”You make it sound very simple.”

”It isn’t.”

”Then why say it now?”

”Because tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.”

Lin Yue’s Answer

She looked down at her hands.

For years—

she had believed survival meant depending only on herself.

She had built systems.

Plans.

Safeguards.

Networks.

She had learned how to grow food.

Build shelters.

Purify water.

Repair machinery.

Manage resources.

Protect communities.

But there was one thing she had never planned for.

Someone choosing to stay.

Not because he had to.

Not because of family duty.

Not because of obligation.

Because he wanted to.

She slowly looked at Shen Rui.

”I don’t know what the future will look like.”

”Neither do I.”

”I don’t know where this road will take us.”

”Neither do I.”

”I might spend half my life covered in mud.”

”I’ve already accepted that.”

She laughed through the tears in her eyes.

”And I may drag you into ridiculous situations.”

”You already do.”

She smiled.

”Then...”

She reached for his hand.

”Stay.”

Shen Rui gently closed his fingers around hers.

”I will.”

The Promise

Lumi watched from across the room.

Her eyes sparkled.

Aster’s communicator suddenly activated.

”Emotional event detected.”

Lin Yue immediately turned.

”Aster!”

”Was my observation incorrect?”

Shen Rui laughed.

Lumi giggled.

Lin Yue covered her face.

”You have terrible timing.”

”I am still learning.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”Keep learning.”

The Morning

The storm passed before sunrise.

The mountains were covered in mist.

Lin Yue stepped outside.

Shen Rui joined her.

Their hands found each other naturally.

Neither mentioned it.

Neither needed to.

They had crossed an invisible boundary the night before.

Not into marriage.

Not yet.

But into something deliberate.

Something chosen.

Something they would build together.

The Eastern Ruins

By noon—

they reached the ruins.

A massive stone structure stood beneath the mountain.

No roads led to it.

No settlement appeared nearby.

Yet Aster detected enormous energy beneath the ground.

Lin Yue approached the entrance.

The door opened.

Not for her.

For Lumi.

A voice echoed through the chamber.

LUMA IDENTIFIED.

Lumi froze.

KEEPER AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.

Lin Yue frowned.

”That’s impossible.”

Aster scanned the door.

”Authorization appears genuine.”

Shen Rui stepped closer.

”Then someone isn’t pretending to be Lumi.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”What do you mean?”

He pointed at the door.

”They have access to the original system.”

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”So whoever sent the command...”

”May actually possess Keeper-level authority.”

The Hidden Chamber

They entered.

The chamber was enormous.

Ancient machinery covered the walls.

At its center stood a circular platform.

Above it floated a crystal.

Inside the crystal—

a woman appeared.

Lin Yue recognized her immediately.

The last Keeper.

Lumi gasped.

”She’s alive.”

Aster corrected:

”Not alive.”

Lin Yue stared.

”A preserved consciousness?”

”Yes.”

The woman opened her eyes.

She looked directly at Lumi.

Then—

at Lin Yue.

Finally—

at Shen Rui.

Her expression softened.

”You came.”

Lin Yue stepped forward.

”Who are you?”

The woman smiled.

”My name was Seraphine.”

Lumi whispered:

”The last Keeper.”

Seraphine nodded.

”Yes.”

The Last Keeper’s Secret

Lin Yue looked at the countdown.

”Did you send the restoration command?”

Seraphine shook her head.

”No.”

”Then who did?”

Seraphine looked toward the ceiling.

”Someone who has been waiting for me to die.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”You said you were the last Keeper.”

”I was.”

”Then why does the system recognize you?”

Seraphine looked at Lumi.

”Because I transferred my authority.”

”To Lumi?”

”No.”

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”Then to whom?”

Seraphine answered:

”To you.”

Silence.

Lin Yue stared.

”Me?”

”Yes.”

”But I never accepted it.”

”You didn’t need to.”

”Why?”

Seraphine smiled sadly.

”Because the Golden Space already chose you.”

The Meaning of the Choice

Lin Yue looked at Lumi.

Then at Shen Rui.

The Golden Space had never simply been a gift.

It had been watching.

Testing.

Learning.

Not judging whether she was powerful enough.

But whether she would use power without becoming controlled by it.

Seraphine continued:

”A Keeper cannot be someone who wants control.”

”Then what must they be?”

”Someone willing to give it away.”

Lin Yue understood.

”That is why the network responded to me.”

”Yes.”

”And why the Original couldn’t control me.”

”Yes.”

”Because I don’t want to control it.”

Seraphine smiled.

”Exactly.”

The Final Problem

Aster suddenly sounded an alarm.

RESTORATION SEQUENCE: 03:17:42

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”We don’t have much time.”

Seraphine nodded.

”You have one choice.”

”What choice?”

”Allow the restoration.”

”And risk repeating the past.”

”Yes.”

”Or stop it.”

”And lose thousands of years of knowledge.”

Lin Yue stared at the ancient machinery.

Then at Lumi.

Then at Shen Rui.

He stepped beside her.

”What do you want to do?”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”I don’t know.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”Good.”

She frowned.

”Good?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because you don’t have to decide alone.”

Her expression softened.

He took her hand.

”We’ll think it through together.”

The Beginning of Forever

Lin Yue looked down at their joined hands.

She smiled.

”Together.”

Lumi smiled.

Aster recorded the word.

TOGETHER: REPEATED HUMAN DECISION.

Lin Yue laughed.

”Don’t turn everything into data.”

”I will attempt not to.”

Shen Rui looked at Lin Yue.

”When this is over...”

She looked at him.

”What?”

He hesitated.

For the first time—

the confident Shen Rui looked uncertain.

”I have something I want to ask you.”

Her heart skipped.

”What?”

He smiled.

”Not here.”

”Why?”

”Because if I ask you now, you’ll blame the ancient civilization for interrupting our moment.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”You’re probably right.”

He squeezed her hand.

”So when?”

”When we return home.”

She nodded.

”I’ll hold you to that.”

He smiled.

”You should.”

The Hidden Promise

Neither of them knew—

but Seraphine was watching.

She smiled.

The last Keeper had waited centuries for this moment.

Not for the ancient technology.

Not for the restoration.

Not for the return of the old civilization.

For something much simpler.

A Keeper who understood that the future could not be built alone.

A woman who had finally allowed someone to stand beside her.

A man who had chosen to stay.

Seraphine whispered:

”Perhaps humanity has finally learned.”

The countdown continued.

02:59:59

Lin Yue looked toward the ancient control panel.

Shen Rui stood beside her.

Lumi floated at her shoulder.

Aster waited for instructions.

And somewhere beyond the stars—

the ancient network awakened.

But this time—

the future would not be decided by one person.

It would be decided by people who had learned to trust one another.

Lin Yue tightened her grip on Shen Rui’s hand.

Whatever happened next—

they would face it together.

And when the crisis ended—

there was one promise waiting for them.

One question.

One answer.

And perhaps—

a wedding beneath the Golden Space’s moonlit World-Tree.

To be continued...
